One of the best enhancements for me is xBR texture filtering, since old CRT TV pixels and analog TV signal used to blend pixels and prevent aliasing you can use xBR to get a softer picture like the one you would get with an old CRT TV instead of liquid cristal sharp square pixel from today monitors and TVs, you can also use MSAA to get rid of some other sharp pixels.

5:14 This is a little misleading. Aliasing aka jaggies, is a problem at low resolutions because the pixels are larger, and more conspicuous. But at higher resolutions, the pixels become smaller and more dense, i.e. the PPI (pixels per inch) increases, which makes aliasing less conspicuous. Anti-Aliasing refers to a range of filters which blur and generally degrade the overall picture quality in attempt to mask the jaggies. But at high resolutions, anti-aliasing is not necessary as the aliasing is no longer noticeable.
My PSX emulation started way back in 2003 with the ePSXe software and up until December 2023 I stood with them. However after I found Duckstation by complete accident I realized how minuscule ePSXe was compared to this newer software, specially at the settings configurations, but most importantly, proper sub-pixel precision instead of a half implemented hack. For me it was hard to leave ePSXe after using it for more than 20 years, but there was no way I could write off the huge advantage Duckstation had, so as a goodbye to ePSXe I made a marathon of the first 5 games I played on it before officially jumping ship into this newer piece of software.

@@retrovideogamejunkie That is a great question, it really depends on how you like things to look. Different looks for 2d games will mostly be with Shaders. Now I'm gonna add a section to the new video covering 2d games.
Amazing explanations, thank you so much. Is there a way to keep the graphics as close as possible to the PS1 original hardware? What would be the settings for that? And another question is, the letters for example in Metal Gear are too pixalated, what's the best way to fix that? I don't remember them being that bad in CRT. Oh and lastly, Metal Gear has a brightness setting in the options, I couldn't find a way to adjust that... I hope you or someone else can follow up with this, thank you much!
For what you want just run at original resolution and slap a crt shader on it. Yes text on digital displays will look pixalated especially when upscaled. The reason it didn't look that bad on crt is because scanlines masked the pixalation somewhat. Adaptive Downsampling will smooth the text out, but it wont look as it did on a crt as it's not being played on a crt.
@de4life1770Well now I'm having a different issue, but I don't think it's Duckstations fault as it happens on EPCSX as well, in Legend of the Dragoon they have a timed hit combat system, and neither emulator has succeeded in this. Now I could still play the game if I wanted to go through is like a wiffle ball bat against a tank, but I just put it down instead
Quick question, is there a particular reason why you are using an old version of DuckStation? That version you have in the video is quite old from what i can see.
No reason, i did run the updater before making the video. Not sure why it didn't get me to the most recent version but I'm all up to date now. Thanks for pointing this out
You're talking about texture packs. These are usable in Duckstation, you'll have to google 'duckstation texture packs' to see which ones work in duckstation. You can make your own but I have no idea where to start with that.
Hello, I have an issue when closing to other cars they partly vanish, any idea how to get rid of it without loosing smooth graphics?[I mean what should I enable or disable in settings] (Gran turismo 2)
Yes good point. I'll mention this in the next video. Think I'm gonna cover some different examples of how you can make ps1 look. It's really a canvas for everyone to do what they want with.
its kinda like i do the set up, usually i play one game only at a specific time and so i dont change per game maybe i shouldve done that but now its irrelevant. One thing i like to experiment with is post process, i mean using only Cccalibrator and it can quite nicely enhance colors and shades etc. so the game looks more vibrant then vanila. But its also like u know per game basis, there were some games that with my previous set up looked like i mean how could i describe it, like neon color pallete vomit fest. It was bad, other games looked fantastic with it. Like playing Wink 40. And with the settings i have the game looks quite nice. Sure its nothing special compared to whats possible nowadays but still the difference is like almost night/day. Same with Syphon Filter games. Sadly for the first and third game PGXP was no go. I mean nothing happens, wobbly wobbly all the way, especially the third game is like ridiculous, but probably cause playing on high res and modern display so yeah, was made with CRT in mind and it looks the way. But Wink 40, beautiful. Also recommend using the last PGXP option CPU mode if u well want to torture urself. :) Anyway Duckstation is a game changer from the time it first came out, until today, i wouldnt change it for anything. Ez to set up, to use, and like 99% of the games or more works like without any problems. Also i use Vulkan. Mostly changing if like per game u know. Game has issues, first think i try, then play with other settings. WIth one game i needed even adjust PGXP in advanced settings, cause it did get rid of the wobbly but the gaps stayed and was a bit irritating, but after a little tinkering, i almost made it work as it shouldve. Almost :). Anyway. The only game, repeat THE ONLY game i had like real trouble even running was Duke Nukem 3D. I mean, the game ran, but the screen stayed frozen. Couldnt figure out why what was the issue. Maybe i didnt try hard enough to correct the problem. The other Duke Nukem games ran great.
I refuse to mess with android atm. I have way too much going on on the PC side to spend time on it, and I personally hate Smart Phones, like they are the devil....or MK ultra in it's final form lol
Can you use keyboard/mouse with Duckstation? :( I installed everything and it works, but Keyboard/mouse wont work with any of my games. I need help guys, I am super new to emus. I got Metal Gear Solid 1, Crash Bandicoop, Gran Turismo, and Tom Raider. I want to play MGS1 so bad!
Thanks for such an in depth and excellent video! Do you recommend any specific settings for MGS1? My textures don't look right despite following the above - they're very warped and tend to flicker whilst moving
Mgs suffers from 'wobble' quite badly. Even pgxp doesn't fix it all the way. Just is what is with that one. You may prefer the pc port, integral as it doesn't have this issue. However, it is really best played on PlayStation
Fantastic video. Tanks so much for producing high quality content! I actually love this emulator. However, a while back after an update, the fullscreen shortcuts stopped working for me. Have they changed? Could someone help me with the fullscreen keyboard shortcuts for Duckstation please?
I actually feel many look worse. Sure it’s higher resolution and sharper but due to the low poly objects it make it look stiff and plastic. I would much more suggest to use a CRT shader filter. Then it still looks less blocky and smoother but it adds details by the nature of it. Also it looks more like what it actually did back in the days playing those games on a CRT TV
This is more geared to enhancing than replicating the look of the original graphics. I agree og crt deals with pixel art intended for scan lines much better, for e.g. the infamous Draculas red eyes in SOTN. For me it's either og hardware with crt or emulation setup for digital displays. No in-between. I don't really cross the lines with crt shaders im emulation. Nice thing is we can all have it our own way.
@@warpedpolygon yes for sure the real thing is the best :) I get what you mean. Thing is for me that some of the things get enchanted but some gets dehanced also. So my question to you is. Do you don’t think it looks good with (good ones of course) CRT shaders? Like it depends on games. When it comes to games made in 640x480 so say PS2 / Dreamcast era I feel CRT shaders vs just upscaling is a case by case. But for PS1 era and below I have found few games that look better with just upscaling (even with HD texture packs etc - FSAA , etc) compared to upscaled with CRT shader. Maybe in the future with AI where it would not just scale up stuff but also redo textures, meshes with more detail etc then I am all for it. Like I no your video. Almost at start with Croc. The crocodile loos very picky of course with wobbly textures. But in the emulated it loos like blocky lego. For me having higher texture resolutions, filtering. Frame interpolation and perspective correct textures would be fine. So what throws me off is this resolution upscale that just brings out how blocky object was. So for me the CRT is a way to avoid this blockingness while getting rid of the pixly stuff. And all this is 3D of course. For 2D in most case or at least where the art was done for CRT I find it always looking better with CRT shaders (real CRT of course) Hope this explains more what I meant
@@litjellyfish for sure on a case by case game by game basis. Some stuff looks crap with some games. As for shaders, I'm just not really a huge user of them. Always a pain to setup and get lined up and they look different on different displays.
@@warpedpolygon yeah I agree shaders is a mess. @@retrovideogamejunkie That is a great question, it really depends on how you like things to look. Different looks for 2d games will mostly be with Shaders.
Now I'm gonna add a section to the new video covering 2d games.
@warpedpolygon thank, I really don't like that wax vision filter on 2D games...and yes I did that mistake on castlevania sotn XD
This channel does not have a z buffer
Out of line some may say
Can You make an ape escape optimization video ? The wobbly background is very annoying and I cant find a middle ground for wobbly vs enhancements.
Guess this is old, mine is different
It got an update pretty much straight after I put this out, of course. The video options are a bit different but enhancements are the same.
It’s super similar I just set up using this video and there was maybe a few diff options
@@EvilJ069 yeah i don’t blame you some games just have mechanics that emulators make it near impossible to do right. I see what you’re saying
you didn't give a link in the description for those 480i games.
shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=54382 thanks for letting me know. I think this is a full list but there may be some more lurking out there.
I don't see the list of 480i games you mentioned would be in the description
Thanks for the guide man! what's the game? it looks like F-Zero!
Wipeout 3 or Wip3out depending on your philosophical outlook on life
the best tutorial
Thanks. Well done.
I can't find the "Linear Upscaling" option anywhere in DuckStation, has it been removed?
Its now in a dropdown list in the display tab. It got some updates and looks a little different
Quick question, is there a particular reason why you are using an old version of DuckStation?
That version you have in the video is quite old from what i can see.
No reason, i did run the updater before making the video. Not sure why it didn't get me to the most recent version but I'm all up to date now. Thanks for pointing this out
But isn't the version he's using the latest "stable" one?
Maybe that's why the internal updater did nothing...
@@you2be839 is there a dev build?
Thank you very much!
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
Hopefully you can cover every emulators like PCSX2 etc...
Yes! Soon as I get a reasonable PC that can actually run it. I'm in potato mode right now.
Amazing. Is it possible to mod a PS1 game on duckstation too? Like change the skins of the characters, stuff like that
You're talking about texture packs. These are usable in Duckstation, you'll have to google 'duckstation texture packs' to see which ones work in duckstation.
You can make your own but I have no idea where to start with that.
Amazing Video
Thanks!
thank you syphony of the night looks better but still not perfect yet, i will rewatch the video maybe the solution is in it, thanks again sir
There's a hacked version that gets rid of the black bars btw.
Hi Do you need to download specific thinks in order to get the widescreen cheats? Cause my cheats section is greyed out
Nice tutorial ty bro
Duckstation needs texture smoothing and texture upscaling
thank you!
Is there any way to put a image as overlay I mean like a frame for your gameplay????

I'm sorry I have zero knowledge but will these settings work if I plug my laptop to my tv through HDMI cable?
Don't apologise for asking man it's cool. Yeah it'll work the same mate
Hello, I have an issue when closing to other cars they partly vanish, any idea how to get rid of it without loosing smooth graphics?[I mean what should I enable or disable in settings] (Gran turismo 2)
Go back to defaults and change the backend. If that works you know it's something you have set
Thanks .

I love your content bro ❤
Thanks for the love mate!
software renderer is recommended for FG or games that are full 2d in general id you want precision, but you can't enhance the game with that
Yes good point. I'll mention this in the next video.
Think I'm gonna cover some different examples of how you can make ps1 look. It's really a canvas for everyone to do what they want with.
Do you have any advice for the game "return fire", everything wobbles too much and it makes me nauseous. Pgxp is enabled and internal resolution is 6x
what game is the opening one of your video? it looks like a racing game
T4: Ridge Racer Type 4
its kinda like i do the set up, usually i play one game only at a specific time and so i dont change per game maybe i shouldve done that but now its irrelevant.
Anyway Duckstation is a game changer from the time it first came out, until today, i wouldnt change it for anything.
The other Duke Nukem games ran great.
can you do an andriod version video?
I refuse to mess with android atm. I have way too much going on on the PC side to spend time on it, and I personally hate Smart Phones, like they are the devil....or MK ultra in it's final form lol
@@warpedpolygon lol
Can you use keyboard/mouse with Duckstation? :(
I installed everything and it works, but Keyboard/mouse wont work with any of my games.
However, it is really best played on PlayStation
anyone know how to get texture mods to load??? I'm trying to get the texture for metal gear solid integral to work.
Man, I haven't figured that one out just yet either.
Fantastic video. Tanks so much for producing high quality content! I actually love this emulator. However, a while back after an update, the fullscreen shortcuts stopped working for me. Have they changed? Could someone help me with the fullscreen keyboard shortcuts for Duckstation please?
Should be left alt and enter
why does my duckstation not have "Enhancements"? It has "Graphics" instead and is very different

@@warpedpolygon thankes bro
I'm not seeing the general settings on my android app. Only for pc or??
Why does my settings look different? I dont have "enhanchments" either
good love this video
Glad you enjoyed it
I actually feel many look worse.
For 2D in most case or at least where the art was done for CRT I find it always looking better with CRT shaders (real CRT of course)
Hope this explains more what I meant
@@litjellyfish for sure on a case by case game by game basis. Some stuff looks crap with some games. As for shaders, I'm just not really a huge user of them. Always a pain to setup and get lined up and they look different on different displays.
But really this is all stuff that's personal preference. There is no right answer
@@warpedpolygon yeah I agree shaders is a mess. Pity that this retro rink 4K cost like 700. € I have heard it has amazing built in shaders that emulate directly a lot of old TV. also it can handle signal from all old consoles to modern TV. So finally an alternative to having a big bulky CRT TV at home. But yeah expensive as hell…
my version doesnt have the enhancement menu?
Im getting massive fps drops whenever Gray fox is using stealth on MGS1...and some minor dips when cutscenes
are playing..any solutions?
Edit: got it had to switch to Vulkan
Vulkan performs the best
