I was a PA for three seasons on VEEP and can vouch that Sam Richards is the best, just as lovable in real life. His first day on set he improvised so many good one liners it was obvious we hadn't seen the last of him. Him and Tim (Jonah) struck gold when they were together on and off set.
Wow, very cool. "Richard" is one of my favorite characters of all time, in anything, so it's nice to hear he's as lovable off screen, as he is on it. What an amazing show to be a part of, great to know you have such positive memories from your time there.
Envy! Working on this show must have been incredible. What a body of work. Every character is my favorite character, depending on which episode I'm watching, but Sam Richards is pure joy.

Veep is such a great show, but it went to another level when Sam Richardson came on…I love to see him and Tim Robinson in Detroiters..hate they didn’t renew that show.
This just makes their on-screen "middle school" friendship even better
Dude is one of the most underrated comedic actors in history. Everything he says is a punchline.
Of all the millions of things that get called underrated Richard Splett is the least underrated. He went from a very minor character to a main character, featuring in every episode, with multiple story arcs and ended the series as POTUS. Not everything is underrated, there are other adjectives.

I loved “Tom, Dick, and Gehry” when discussing the architects.
The ALS line and the "lyndrome syndrome" line are two of my favorites of the whole series.
When everyone is counting the number of times they’re in the book and they ask Richard if he’s in it and he says “Just the dedication.” IDK why but the fact that he’s the only one she put in her dedication cracks me up
I love how even Jonah treats him well and is genuinely excited for him to be appointed mayor. He humanizes every character he comes into contact with.

Great observation. Even Uncle Jonah is charmed by Richard, to the extent that he can be charmed. And he is the only person on the show who elicits gratitude from Selina.

I love Richard because he's the exact opposite of Selena - truly cares about the people, is always honest even if it gets him in trouble, and does it all without any ulterior motive. The finale was a message that there are still good people like him in politics and we should look out for them.
I loved the finale because the ending for Richard is exactly what I would imagine his career path would take, like you said and the creator of the series said, it give hope that a good person can stay good In politics

@@tarzangrant123 It's even foreshadowed when Jonah's cackling Kobold of an uncle says something like "if you were 10% less black I could make you President" -- which was probably a true assessment of the state of American racism (in-universe and in reality) when he said it. But it's nice that even in Veep's cynical world, America still had the ability to become a better and more clear-eyed place in.. what, a few decades? And was able to recognize that Richard Splett had what it takes to be a true and just leader.
Ben Silver I remember that episode, it was so funny! The later seasons really started to show the potential of Richard, like when we found out he had two masters, one of them being in voting laws. There was almost the scene you mentioned and we saw how genius Richard is at debates, definitely a heart warning character arc

The funniest is when Selina was getting her presidential portrait done and she yells for Richard and he says "I've been here the entire time ma'am. Just trying to keep still in case I'm in the painting" 😂

I met Sam Richardson after a show in LA & jokingly said “it’s the president!” He was so nice & stopped to take a few pics & talk. He’s like a real life Richard, super nice!

Whats so great about him is that he started like a tertiary character that none of the other characters took seriously and then he just exploded into his own thing.
Richard standing still during Selina’s painting in hopes he’ll get painted is my fav moment of the show.
Richard's an example of how brilliant minds identify a great character and performance and inject him seamlessly into the ensemble. The one big change they made was even more impressive, turning Richard into the only person that Selina was nice to.
I think he was the best addition to VEEP, without him, everything would look bleak, he was a hero we would totallly support after Selina became a villain

Armando Iannucci being English had a big hand in many of these racial jokes since the issue is a lot less of a taboo and much more acceptable to use in the name of humour outside of America. Obviously, being a master of satire he'd know exactly how to handle that stuff no matter the subject as well.
This guy should’ve won an Emmy. Every line absolute perfection.

Richard is so good that he's loved by the two worst characters of the show: Selina and Jonah
I feel like amy was the only one that was never nice to him, but she’s not even fake nice to Selina
Jonah's uncle makes them both look like great patriots.
Selina actually realises how immediately incompetent Richard is right away. Jonah is such a buffoon that he doesn't grasp it at all. During the arch, Selina learns to appreciate his demeanor and heart while Jonah ends up despising him.
Richard, played by Sam Richardson... For any who do not know him, he is just as adorably likeable in real life. He's a golden boy of Detroit improv and we all love him dearly.

I love how the very best of Richard Splett is essentially all his scenes. Completely agree
I think the final scene of the show where Richard has been president for two consecutive terms in landslide victories goes against Selina’s entire arc in the show, where she does anything at all possible to get ahead. She only serves one term by clawing and scratching her way to the top; meanwhile Richard is perfectly amiable and decent to everyone he comes into contact with, and ends up serving two terms with his dignity intact.
I'd vote for Richard. In a heartbeat.

for me, honestly one of the best TV characters EVER. maybe #1, I can't recall ever being so fond of a particular character like Richard Splett before. I watched all 58 and a half minutes of this with pure joy, thanks for making it

Julia-Louis Dreyfuss was a big influence on the casting as an exec producer and he was so good while shooting that episode she told Armando Ianucci they needed to lock Sam down NOW because he was gonna be snatched up by someone else very quickly

The finale was depressing as hell but Richard eventually becoming President was the only happy ending.
So many great scenes.. the sound of him saying "oh" at 12:00 as he realizes hes just snitched during the hearing then immediately pleading the 5th always makes me laugh

There's a slight edge to his voice when he's exposing Sidney's corruption that leads me to believe that he knew full well what the fallout was going to be.
Richard Splett has to be the purist character ever brought to screen.
Sam Richardson was stunning. Everything he said was funny, That was pretty much all due to his delivery - the way he subtly altered his tone of voice from word to word, his posture, his eyebrows. It was a magnificent but quiet performance. He wasn't trying to out shine anyone else, or chewing the scenery, but every time he was on screen...HE was what grabbed all the attention.

I hated him in the first couple of episodes. Later on, I found myself hating Selena more and growing more and more fond of Richard.
Great video, the only thing missing was Richard's brief phone call directly after his first "self-husbandry" donation. Quite possibly my favorite moment of him throughout the entire series.
