Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

Thanks so much for posting this video. I was totally flustered as to how to get the adapter off of my mower, especially after using liquid penetrate and a hammer without success. I didn't have a jaw puller, but I managed to rig a puller from some large C-clamps and a block of wood. It came right off with that.
Nice call, Thanks!!!
I had a particularly old Honda mower and due to another one of your videos I had reason to believe that I needed to change the drive pulley but I couldn't get the blade adapter off. I hooked up a 2 jawed puller and I bent a 2" bolt and no movement. So I spent the next 5 days searching TH-cam for the most ideal method to deal with seized rusted parts to get that blade adapter off. I was forced to torch it with propane and spray it with water. Its suppose to turn the rust to a fine powder. In the course of 3 days I torched it and sprayed it with water over 3 times and hooked up a 3 jaw puller that was rated for 7 tons and tapped it with a 3lb sledge hammer all along the way. Then it was around the 4th torching that I got movement after I tapped it with the sledge hammer. I torched it again and at around the 7th time along with the 7 ton puller it went 'CRACK'. There was a larger gap. Further pulling yielded many more cracks as I worked the adapter off of the engine shaft. And there was nobody around to High Five this Magical Achievement with.
breeze787 dang same thing happened to me can’t get the dang thing off
@@lukepm4814 Get a propane torch and get it red and spray water on it. It works! I've done it many more times since and the torch can get the dang thing off. I guarantee it or your money back!
breeze787 thanks im going to try it
I've never done that before. Mine was so rusted, I couldn't see how it was connected.
Thanks for preventing me from blowing it off with a stick of dynamite.
You are the king of lawn mower repairs. Thanks for that tip. If you can make a video on replacing trigger spring on a trimmer that would be great
How do you pull a Craftsman blade adapter with a star in the center, can't push against the crank with a bolt if there is no hole. Thanks Donyboy your my go to lawn mower man!
Ten years ago Donboy73 the small engine doctor was providing solutions to problems I didn't have yet! Looking young, my Brother! Stay safe.
great video dony, i guess ive been lucky, all the ones ive done just came off with a couple light taps with a hammer. when i put them back on i put some grease on the shaft so it doesnt get stuck.
Thanks, the puller idea was exactly where I was stuck, went to the auto parts store and signed one out!! Much better than trying to pound and pry off!
Thank you so much for this video. I am fighting for 4 days already to get lose that damned blade adapter. My father in law hit a metal hydrant in the grass and bent the blade adapter. So it was heavily damaged. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
I just pulled one from a donor engine. The method you showed pwrked perfectly..
Certainly it did not just "fall off", but after a bit of a struggle, it came off.
Good, correct advice. Thanks.
Just saved me a bunch of money. Thank you for making the video!!
Thank you sir you help me with my lawn mower. And now I can cut my grass and stay safe and be happy. Thank you again and have a beautiful Christmas with your family and friends🌲
keep up the great videos I'm not a mechanic but if I can fix something myself I will most definitely do that and thank you for showing videos such as this one(👍)
I highly suggest getting the puller you used most ACE hardware carry both and I bought the other puller it broke after 3 uses the better one I paid 22.99 for and has lasted over a years sometimes with very heavy use . I also suggest getting some big tie wraps and put them around the puller to hold it on that way you have 2 hands free it has always worked for me . I also used it when I worked pulling stators off big generators as big as 500 kw
Hi Donyboy, 25/9/11
Thanks for your help. I was baffled as to how to remove the collar of a broken blade from my lawnmower. I was using a blunt cold chisel & mallet to no avail. U saved my day. Thanks again. Ean Aw (NZ)
You know sir I'm an artist and I looked at you and realized that you look just like Billy Jack if you had a black hat on. Do you know because of Billy Jack and Bruce Lee they gave me a reason to study karate and to protect myself from bullies. And it's been protecting me from bullies since I was young all the way to today in 2023 well sir take care and stay safe. You look like a strong smart man and I'm very proud of you. God bless you and your family🌲
Cool Dony, Just the trick I was looking for. My 7hp 18 inch cut Husqvarna is mostly ripped apart now. The rock I hit did not shear the fly wheel locking stock so I moved onto thinking that all the smoke and oil in the exhaust is due to the rings on the piston. I do not have a puller so will need to pick one up. I also managed to break 3 bolts off in the frame of the engine. Two for the mounting to the base of the mower and one that holds the gas can on. Fun times
Thank you so much for this method work really well for me
thanks for the nice and simple video
Thank you! Tried ever other option I could find. None even budged the blade adapter. Spent hours trying. Found your video and had it off in 20 seconds.
Thanks for the video. I think you just saved me a serious expense for repair.
A hydraulic puller can be significantly better when needed. It is less likely to come off, as it won't twist out of location.
I used three different bolt lengths in the hole. When the adapter is really stuck, only have a bolt protruding a few millimetres each time, otherwise it can just bend.
Thank you…great video!
I use a pitmen arm puller on them it works well also, I started doing this when I loaned out my jaw puller and don't remember who I lent it to
never had to do this before but it's exactly what I thought, thanks
Great video. Is getting the blade adapter off how you typically replace the drive belt? I’m talking about a snapper 21 inch self-propelled. Thanks
hot damn donboy, every time i search for a small engine repair video you've always got one! thanks!
@Awean you're welcome
I had to wack the heck out of mine now I know how to do it 😂
Yes thanks alot. ive been trying & prying lol & nothing, spaying pbs blaster & wd40 and its barley moved, thanks for vid
you can use pb blast spray and tap it lightly to set up vibration so the spray can soak in. the tapping loosens some of the rust too. dont hit it too hard though its a crank shaft
@IANxWILLIAMSON i would heat it but be careful not to damage the crank seal
Hi Dony, great video. What size is that puller? 4" or maybe 6"?You're helping me do an engine swap!
@darkseed1010 yes you can use it in the summer, i would use sae 30 oil though
ok good, thanks for watching
Thanks for the video, just saved me a headache. One tip i'd give to others is you can in some cases just use the same bolt that was already in the damn thing instead of finding another one.
yes the adapters arent threaded the drive shaft is
@carnivore10 if i get a chance i will, i just removed one the other day but it came off by hand
Thank you
@chrospoke mostly through my dad when i was younger, a few high school classes and the rest is self-taught
@805ROADKING sometimes i get more for a blade adapter then a lawnmower, lol
Thanks! The only issue that I see is if you don't have a puller on-hand, you'll spend as much on that as you will on a new blade adapter, no??
Thank for sharing, I try but won’t come out, mine was rusted, let sit with WD40 for a while, try later on , if not probably heat it up, 💯👍
@99carnot yes, we have a heatwave at this moment, one extreme to the other, how's the weather at ur end? by the way i like that ratchet.
Again, you helped me a lot man ! Keep up the great work, its really appreciated.
I have one to do tomorrow. Maybe I should put the thing back on the deck for more stability.
@Smallgasengine1 yes i would use the same procedure
@pivotboy63 good idea or some anti-seize
Thanks! Just what I needed. I didn't know if it was threaded or keyed and pressed and it's in the netherworld where the engine manufacturer and lawnmower makers unite so neither one documented it well.
Success! You'll need to use a grade 5 or better bolt or you will bend them. Ask me how I know...
My '92 Briggs 5HP crank was actually threaded for a 3/8 bolt but I didn't discover that until I pulled the adapter and I munged the threads a little but I don't really need them so it's not a biggie.
the second adaptor in video, is it not broke. looks like two lugs are missing. i ask as i think i have the same problem. there are two drive holes in blade but the matching lugs seem to have sheered off. or is the tightness of the bolt enough to turn blade
Donny, can I put a different blade adapter on a mower that it didn't originally come with example 3-hole to Bow-Tie or star
With proper oil viscosity can a snow blower engine run in the summer time or will it over heat?
Will this work the same on a self-propelled as well? I had 15 year old 250cc Craftsman that died and I bought a 190cc Briggs & Stratton 22" and it does a poor job mulching compared to my ancient B&S mower.
I could mow 6" grass down to 2" and not have ANY grass clumps...this new one I cut 1" worth and it leaves clumps left and right. I think it's the blade but they use a "hop star" (5 point star) and I can't find a decent mulching blade for that style.
I have a honda HRR216tdaa and the drive pulley and blade holder are one piece.having problems removing it,any ideas?thanks,MD.
how do these go back on? is it just push them on a tapered shaft like a drill chuck? Thanks Ian
great advice thanks so much
Thank you man for your help
Just what I needed to know . Thanks man.
I hope this works on my '66 B&S engine... I want to put a different style blade adapter on it.
would be nice to have the brand name of the puller.......I have searched not all pullers are the same and I could not find one like you are using in the video
Is there a sleeve or bowtie adapter to fit economic round center blades that wouldn't normaly fit?
I'm curious I just got a new 22" Craftsman front propel and they have these stupid star shaped notch for the mower blade, I believe it's called a HOP. The issue is the mulching blades are few and far between and are either PITA to sharpen long term or are poorly made.
Is there a way to replace it with a normal style configuration (like in your video)? Thank you.
my 1991 Briggs adapter comes off perfect i just put a little oil in it every year
thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@karnsaini yes very busy
I often wondered if that shear pin was holding it in any way. Thanks ..just the video I was looking for..half the search comes from the right name to call that thing..I was calling it a cuppler..or shank
i called it a spindle and kept getting riding mower decks
thank.....ill try it.....
Great video thank you
do you have video on removing shaft ? the star that holds blade is GONE ! when shaft bent...
Hi dony. What blade fits the second adapter in your video. Also what hardware? Ty
YOU'RE WELCOME
What size and brand are your two pullers? I need one but don't want to get the wrong thing.
good tip db!
I have the 475 double blade deck and I can not get the first one off . Masport 675series. Please give me some help I've no oxy and it's doing my head in.
@darkseed1010 10W40 or 30. 5W30 is not good to use in the summer.
How do you replace the blade adapter to the shaft? I need to replace one from a Husquvarna mower,
When trying to pull an adapter off a short shaft motor there is no space for a puller. I always soak them with wd40 and then use a pneumatic hammer. Put back in the blade bolt a couple of turns, with a THICK pair of constriction gloves, pull on the blade adapter while hammering on the head of the bolt with the pneumatic hammer.
How do you put back a new blade adapter on mtd yard machine push behind lawn mower?
hammer works!!!
sounds like a tough one
ugh i have a old one and the adapter is threaded on to the shaft with the adapter welded to the nut and so i cant get the engine off so i cant create any sparks so i am drilling holes everywhere around the nut
I've got a Husqvarna mower whose blade foundation has a star. I want to put on a blade with a hole. Is there an adaptor for this?
Any tips if you don't have that tool?
Crap.. wonder where will i get one of these.
What's the size of the bolt of the second engine? I own a brigs & stratton 098900 series, I have the blade but I don't have the bolt to attach it to the engine and I can't tell the size. Thanks.
Where did you purchase the puller you were using in the video?
You can get them on Amazon
BIG THUMBS UP! Thanks so much for this :) Much appreciated.
I have the smaller one, how to make that one work?
Just fyi. Most blade adaptors are made of a weak cast metal and are designed to fail sacrificially to prevent damage to the crank. So this careful method of removal is good. Hammering will lead to a new expensive part
Thanks for the confirmation. My neighbor gave me a craftsman self propelled with a lower belt shroud that requires adapter removal to remove (and to access the oil drain). Stupid design...
Donyboy73, what can you do when a mower has been tilted up the correct way, but when you change the blade one finds oil in the spark plug hole, and muffler.?
+1234tric th-cam.com/video/L8CovhYJ9vs/w-d-xo.html
is that an oem puller?
I'm trying to lower the blade height on my lawn mower. I know I can lower the deck but if I lower the deck any lower you can't push it because... well it's too low LOL how the heck do you
can you use a gear puller with 3 arms?
It’s pretty evident with the geometry of the blade adapter three arm puller is not gonna work
Jackie Chan's Cousin !!
how to remove debris shield from craftsman lawn mower model no. 944.367501 series 550 ,self propelled
I tried to do this but I just stripped the threads off the bolt I was using and the adaptor just didn't move. I think the heat up method may work but I have not tried yet.
John Morris
what can i heat it with? i guess i always have to have the hardest shit.... cant even find a proper bolt to fit...
sometimes I heat them or grind them off
yeah, i had to do this once before
you should get the key
hey Don is it possible to remove one without the puller?
yes sometimes it is
ok thanks i actually got it off but i now have problems getting the crankcase cover off i have a pulley on the end of it need tips?
