My my, we have become soft over the years. I still love a Forward Control, a wonderful machine.

    Hey Alan.....
    😎😎😎
    Me again....
    Now a completely crazy story.....
I bought a 1974 ex - military mobile office FC 2b from a chap at the Eco Village, Stikland, Cape Town, 20 odd years ago, with not much history on it...
I enjoyed it for a couple of years, did the first leg with Kingsley Holgate's Outside Edge expedition, and later sold it to a lovely couple, whom became friends of mine ( a Landy thing )
They toured Southern Africa in it, and settled in the Cederberg, putting up a Glamping Camp called Moon River...
Watching your latest video, *BIG BIG SURPRISE...*
*I've bought your old FC 😂😂😂*
    What is the chances, huh????
When I got it, the previous owner, ( a real hippie artist chap ) told me that it was a bit sluggish...
I took it for a test drive, but because of the layout of the village, I could never get to 3rd gear due to speed humps and bumps, horses and naked kids....
The deal was done, I was hooked, and I hit the road back to Somerset West in it, some 60km away....( another good friend of mine took me through in his 2,25 88".)
Getting onto the N2 highway, I couldn't get faster than 20km/h...
My first thought was, "what the fuck have I done 😮😮😮" .
Needless to say, I crawled on, and pulled in directly at Steyns Motors, the brother of Pon Steyn, Piet, famous for their Land Rovers.
Just for info: Piet and his wife was murdered on their little retirement farm some years later.. ( rip )
Piet's son in law, Olaf Bergh, phoned me the next day with the news....
Oom Alwyn, your FC has got a broken back side shaft, and two pistons on the six cylinder, 2,6 semi side valve engine wasn't functional... The valves were burned completely away..... 😲😲😲
Apearently I drove it all the way in "front wheel drive" on 4 x cylinders not knowing that the old beast wasn't well, but she wasn't going to let me down. !!!!
What a vehicle. Since her, actually him, I had 2 x other 2b's that I sold off, but still the happy owner of a beautiful 101FC V8...
Loooonnng story, but so nice to see "your" old truck that was "my" old truck on TH-cam, and it's still alive and well in the Cederberg Wilderness doing it's job...
    Kind regards from Hermanus 🇿🇦🇿🇦

Hey Alwyn that is amazing I never knew that. Do you have any pictures? It’s always nice to know where all these Landies are. Your comments are the best, thanks for the support

    Love your videos.
Brings back so many memories of our trip through Lesotho and over Sani pass on our journey from London to Cape Town in our Series IIA
Thank you, Alan, for all you do. Lots of work, but very much appreciated.

My SII 88 went from London to Cape Town and back (over to India and up the hippy trail) in ‘71 to ‘72 - not with me, I hasten to add. They had 6 in it!

    Greetings from Finland!
So nice one to see these beasts in action!
So, your FC2B had the stronger ENV axles, but still some broblems with half shaft failures at the rear??? And some driveshaft problem at front? Some more info on this??? Really heavily loaded vehicles?
I bought 2 FC2A:s 2 years ago! (Those have the weaker standard Rover axles ). Total projects. One is a Firetruck and the other one is an old Telecommunications vehicle with a big half-ready "camper snail" on it. Maybe one day one will be a useable camper and the other one a work truck with an original flatbed that came with those Beauties. 😊

Thanks for watching and commenting. Your observation was correct, the vehicle with the breakdowns was very heavily loaded and was a frequent problem. You can read the full story about that vehicle here www.overlandhb.co.za/home.

Fantastic video, brings back memories of trips I did in the 1970s and 1980s in very second hand Series 2s with a group of friends. Memories that included frequent half shaft replacements and a blown diff (with a 3.8l Chev engine), terrible roads, frequent rain and cold, fantastic scenery and great companionship.

Love the video. Brings back memories. I had one of those in the early nineties and I know about the prop shaft problem. I broke both of them in Kaokoland and had to walked back for three days to Palmwach which was the last Outpost that time…
