I’ve been writing book reviews regularly for over half a year and in this time, I’ve developed some techniques that will help you write better reviews, and quicker too.

Do you have any tips for writing book reviews?
I love doing auditory notes while reading then dictating them later! Just a quick voice memo in the moment, then I can refine the thought on paper after my reading session.
That's a great idea. I've actually not tried that yet but maybe I will!

I watched a few “how to review books” and your’s by far was the most helpful. The others were very structured and a bit complicated. You were the only one that suggested taking notes and I felt that was a great recommendation. Thanks!

This is such a great video! I sometimes take notes during reading, but I don't do it often enough. My reviews definitely differ depending on the purpose of the review. Goodreads in my mind is more for me keeping track of the books I've read and sharing thoughts with friends. If I'm writing a review for work, it'll obviously have a different tone and approach (especially for books I maybe didn't personally love!)

Thank you for putting up such a helpful video. I do write reviews at times but like you say taking notes is a good way to remember parts you can easily forget as you're reading process continues. Oh you're so welcome! Yes writing reviews and then people reading books based on your review is SO rewarding! The more you write them, the more people start to pay attention.
Really good tips in here, I can see where you would get a lot out of taking the notes while reading. Especially for doing things like this, or just so you can reflect back on things you liked or didn't over a long period of time.

I've been reviewing books for a while and have never taken notes while reading that I recall, specifically because I've felt it slowed me down. Now that I've watched this video, I will be taking notes on every book I review. It may take a bit more time but I can see the benefits.

Some great tips there, thanks Gina. I tend not to write reviews any more. I consume books like television; they are a form of entertainment and I'm quite happy these days to abandon a book I'm not enjoying.
That sounds like a lovely position to be in! I still abandon books myself but I suppose I don't if a publisher has given it to me.

Hi Gina. What length are your reviews typically, and who’s the audience for the review? Do you distinguish between short reviews for potential buyers on Amazon and other bookstores, or do you compile longer reviews for your personal use?
I would probably say my reviews are quite long. I put them on Goodreads and then do a shortened version for Instagram. I've not put any of my reviews on Amazon yet but I've been considering it.
I mostly find them useful for remembering what I liked and didn't like about books, say if someone wants a recommendation or I'm talking about them in videos. So having a detailed review is really helpful for me.
