    Regarding the Insulator The metallic bag I used was actually tuned inside out you can see by the double sided tape on it in the video so was not conductive but maybe was not the best choice to demonstrate it. Next video I shall suggest using Paper or cardboard or something and maybe doing it in the other slot as some viewers suggested.

    • @NoobixCube
      @NoobixCube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was litterally coming into the comments to say "isn't that bag conductive?", but this makes sense. My preference would be a bit of kapton tape on the underside of the card, I think. Thermally conductive, so it won't cook the card, but not electrically conductive.

      Thanks for explaining Ravi! Anticipating queries about that before they came up. :)

      You could probably use an old DVD case, cut in half and tape it to the card using a little electrical tape, or just place it there over the ram like you've done with the baggy.

    • @edgarmatzinger9742
      @edgarmatzinger9742 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      IIRC, a antistatic bag is conductive inside and outside. You didn't need to use an insulator between memory and the board. Better use kapton tape...

    The card on the cable is MNT ZZ9000CX ECS/AGA Video Slot adapter, has nothing to do with Zorro3. This is stated several times in the manual
    The 1GB of ram is the two chips to the left of the FPGA on the daughterboard.
    The 8 chips just above the 100 pin edge connector is NOT ram, its 8 74LVC8T245 chips that translates the Amigas 5 volt down to 3.3 that the FPGA runs on.

    • @MarkReed-smokindeist
      @MarkReed-smokindeist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that card on the cable reminded me of the little board you broke off of the Picasso IV and connected with the included cables since the A2000's video slot was not inline with a Zorro slot.

  • @maikmerten

    1:22 "This, I assume, is the 1 gig of RAM" - I'm pretty sure those are level shifters. The Amiga, of course, uses good old 5V logic, which would roast modern FPGAs, which usually can only handle up to 3.3V logic levels.
    The 1 gig of RAM would be the two BGA-style devices next to the FPGA.

    Unlike claimed at 1:12, the extension board has nothing to do with Zorro III. It is the AGA video slot extension to the card, this is where it captures the mainboard's video. Both ZII and ZIII protocols go over the same 100 pin Zorro connector. The video slot part is "broken out" so one can make a longer cable to install it in an A2000, where the video slot is on the other side of the PSU, and not in line with a Zorro slot. Great review video otherwise.

    So I did some research and silver metalic esd bags are conductive both outside and inside with a resistance above 10mohm to safely dissipate any static charge slowly.
    I really only used to think they where the coolest looking ones but it turns out they are the best kind of esd bags for transporting and storing esd sensitive stuff.

    Your "insulating material" may indeed insulate as part of the bag is dielectric plastic and only part of it is conductive metal but .. yeah, maybe there's nothing at all more too it but somehow it seem a bit weird to choose a metallic bag as insulator but sure it's not all metal =P. And it likely do have a static dissipative coating so I guess that may be an advantage vs some other plastic sheet which doesn't. If I remember correctly I used cardboard and one of the colored not metal bags around my 3.5" HDD in the Amiga 1200 without being a pro on what to do and of course if the cardboard can become hot enough that's not a good idea.

    @gdonner 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Nice indeed! Thanks! Please do keep those review vids coming--any chance of testing 1920x1080 at 24-bit to see how responsive it is on Workbench?
    I assume you're using the 1.3c firmware/drivers in this review? (BTW, first batch was 200 cards, second batch is limited to 100 cards; also there are two Core A9 ARM processors onboard--not one.) :) AFAIK, the DDR3 RAM is used exclusively for display-only purposes (Lukas/someone correct me if I'm wrong), and not general RAM usage on the Amiga. That's what the BigRamPlus is for (Individual Computers).
    Not sure if the glitch you're seeing at 4:42 is a direct result of the ZZ9000, or the fact that you still need a 68040.library file in LIBS: :)
    My Amiga 4000's ZZ9000 is en route, and I quickly put in for another one via Batch 2 for my jealous Amiga 3000. :)

    Great video Ravi, many thanks! I'd like to ask you about the performance of this card: How do you feel Workbench using these RTG modes in your experience? I happen to own one too (from batch 2), but I do feel that Workbench performance, when using 16bit or 32bit video modes at very high resolutions (1920x1080@16 bit / 1280x720@16bit / 32bit colour), is somewhat slow... As a super scientific test (LOL) I use EaglePlayer (which is a processor hog) with various plugins and see how good / bad it is at the specific resolution being tested, by watching the plugins play a MOD and seeing if the visualization is near or real-time. I discovered that 1920x1080 works perfect at 8bit color depth, and Workbench performance is pretty good. Also Ethernet was nearly unusable for me when tried the stable firmware and drivers, but when I moved to v1.4b (beta), all my networking issues disappeared. Maybe you could comment on this, or even better, make a new tech video ;-) Cheers! :-)

      You don't just need an engine, you'd also need lots of games making use of it. Otherwise high end Amigas just make no sense besides for heavily outdated applications. I know, because I have gone all the way back then, with PowerPC204e, Cybervision PPC and all the bells and whistles - and it never paid off, besides about 5 games. Actually the only important thing it enabled the Amiga to do, was playing video or mp3 and multitasking fluently with the rest of the system. Of course the Workbench was better to use and some graphics tools. But who does really want to use those nowadays? That's why I only have an mere Amiga 600 now, because it takes little room and can run all the important Amiga games without the need for crappy emulation.
      It's clearly the software (like 3D games and a decent web browser), where the Amiga needs love.. but maybe there's a bit more hope with those new hardware parts around.

      @@elmariachi5133 Agreed, without new and up to date software like games and production, the amiga is a heavy paper weight. Depends on the CPU. if you are running an a4000 stock, i bet not a whole lot of difference, however if you are running accelerated, then it probably out performs the CV64

      Every time someone makes the Amiga is dead tech sorta comment, i think immediately of how about 100 years ago ( and even before that) many people ( including other artists) were of the opinion that painting was a dead art form ( for an example watch the movie Frida, where Diego Rivera tells Frida Kahlo that easel painting is dead )
      I own several mechanical wind up watches and clocks . Those are much more pleasing than a Casio digital watch ( although those are cool too in their own way)
      Vynal record albulms, also a much different experience than listening to mp3 files, or watching TH-cam videos of music - i wouldn't want to give up any of those experiences
      And the 8 bit computers ( my first computer was a Vic 20 when it came out, so there is a bit of old man nostalgia there making one line mazes in basic ECT)
      But the things i see people doing on Vic 20, C=64 now is amazing, especially c=64 demos
      Here in Nashville area where i live, know a LOT of working musicians, not many of them would get rid of a 56 telecaster because it only has one pickup. Or ever give up a prophet organ or any other piece of gear they play with or even just collect for many reasons
      Am not much of a gamer myself, i do other things with my Amigas and 8 bit machines
      And yes a lot of what i do with ( or am trying to do) with my Vic 20 would be easier and cheaper on an aurdino , but for some weird reason, it just seems more fun to hook up relays to the Vic 20 user port that spin old motors pulled from pc disc drives that move ping pong balls around. No reason to do that, but it's fun
      No reason to restore old cars or motorbikes , newer ones are technically better and more reliable
      And lastly and Mabry more importantly,
      Amigas are not apple,Microsoft, Google, Amazon ( and yes i use all those things also)
      Amiga is a community , not a huge corporation and i like these people much more than i do bill gates, elon musk, Berkshire Hathaway, Donald trump/ Hillary Clinton , and all the mega corporations that are only in it for the money
      Money is ok, but it's not everything
