    KFC trivia.
    The bucket of chicken was started by a regional manager (Or equivalent) in Texas. He noticed a lot of people stopping by the stores after church on Sunday and they wanted just chicken, not the box style meals that made up most of the menu. After proving the success of the concept it went nation wide.
    Later that manager, Dave Thomas, left KFC to found Wendy's.

    There was a standard KFC, but off to one side was an old roadside cafe that was the original restaurant. The old furnishings were there, and the original kitchen with all of the implements of destruction. The place was maintained as a museum. Great reaction Diane, in America KFC is basically two types. Original (spicier) and Crunchy (plain but really crunchy) then there are the Tenders which have kind of a medium between the first two. The other major chicken chain is Popeye's Louisiana Chicken and it can be spicy and they have very distinct Creole or Cajun styles of side dishes not normally found in other locations. I recommend both. KFC is my all time favorite as I had it 54 years ago as a 5 year old and its still the same original recipe I remember. :) Chris

    When I was a child we lived in Kentucky and I got to meet Harlan Sanders once (The guy on the bucket) while we were eating at a KFC. Back then they didn't have kid's meals or much of anything besides fried chicken...they didn't even have extra crispy yet, just original. I've loved it ever since. Mr. Sanders did ask me what I thought of the restaurant though and I said it would be nice if I didn't have to pay to use the restroom. That gave him a laugh. Back then it cost a dime (10 cents) to use the restroom at KFC. Maybe he listened because it's been free for years now, lol.

    In the states, we go to KFC to get the chicken and a couple of sides like mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese and coleslaw. We have original and extra Krispy, but extra Krispy is just more breading on the chicken and for me is a bit too much so I stick with original recipe. For me, it’s the best fried chicken on earth, we have it once every few months. I was on a business trip last year in Corbin Kentucky and found out after a few days, Corbin was the birthplace of KFC. So I went to their restaurant, which is part restaurant, part museum, and had myself a three piece original recipe meal. If your buying for your family, you get a bucket. I’m glad you enjoyed the chicken!

    KFC in the US typically has original recipe, extra crispy, and might have grilled. Tend to prefer Popeyes chicken but KFC is good because you can get a proper meal instead of the burger/fries that most fast food offers.
    Next time you're in the US, KFC sometimes has a sandwich called a double down, where instead of a bun there more pieces of meat.

    I love that you finally realized “real” chicken, as opposed to processed nuggets, tastes different depending on the part you eat. 😂 That is, white meat (breasts) is way different in taste, texture & moistness from dark meat (wings, thighs & legs). I’m a wing and thigh man, myself.

    • @prollins6443
      @prollins6443 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wings are white meat as well.
      Chickens don't use their wings, and thus their breasts, as much as their legs, so the muscles are not as developed. That makes the muscles in the thighs and legs much darker since those muscles can better use the chemicals in the blood for energy. So, chickens run forever but only fly a short distance.

    • @jeffg.6110
      @jeffg.6110 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prollins6443 Yes, technically that might be true. But as for taste, juiciness and cooking times/methods, they are for all intents and purposes dark meat.
      From Cooks Illustrated: “Chicken wings evade neat categorization. While their flesh has some of the lighter color and milder flavor of breast meat, it also has the juicy unctuousness of dark meat. When we took an informal poll of our test cooks, we couldn’t come to a consensus: The majority classified wings as dark meat, while a small, but vocal, minority insisted they were white.
      CHICKEN WINGS ARE TECHNICALLY WHITE MEAT. All chicken meat contains both white and dark muscle fibers, and the proportion of each is determined by how those muscles are used… Since chickens spend much of their lives standing or walking, the muscle fibers in their legs and thighs are predominantly dark. Because they almost never fly and only in short bursts, the muscle fibers in their wings and breast are mostly white.
      EVEN SO, WINGS ARE FATTIER LIKE DARK MEAT. Wings also have the highest proportion of skin compared to other chicken parts, and that skin is 60-80 percent collagen… The collagen helps retain moisture in the meat as it cooks, keeping it more juicy and tender.”
      THE BOTTOM LINE: the books might say wings are white meat, but those who butcher or cook a lot of chicken know they’re dark meat. 🤷🏻‍♂️😉

    former kfc manager here, where to begin? they don't have buttermilk biscuits there? sacrilegious! and the darker, more savory chicken was the original recipe. and a thigh. its different from the other (over here its called extra crispy) in how its seasoned and cooked. original is single breaded and pressure cooked in oil, where extra crispy is double breaded and cooked in an open fryer. and those side choices blow. over here we have mac and cheese, baked beans, (sweet style) and coleslaw just to name a few. and the mash and gravy must be different over there because here its a peppery wonder. also, I think yours was from the bottom of the gravy pot, because that chunk was undissolved gravy powder, used to make the gravy. I'm happy to answer any questions as well.

    This was a great reaction! My first job when I turned 16 was frying chicken at a KFC. It tastes like home cooked chicken because the preparation isn't different than what you would do at home. It's just at a larger scale. The chicken is marinated in a brine for hours, then hand breaded and fried. The extra crispy chicken is cooked in a normal open fryer like french fries or whatever, but the original recipe chicken is fried in a pressure cooker.

    Rather than eating KFC I get fried chicken from a regional place called Lee's Famous Recipe. The main reason for this is that Lee's serves chicken gizzards and livers. They fry them in the same breading that they use for their chicken 🍗. This makes the gizzards very rubbery and, as a child, I was fascinated by a food with the texture of a super ball. It's a nostalgic food for me. It must be like that for others as well, because they sometimes run out, even before COVID and supply chain issues.
    Walmart used to sell them next to their raw chicken. I would braise them in chicken stock in a slow cooker. This would make them very tender. I have not seen them for a while.

    Harland Sanders used to lease his recipe for fried chicken to independent restaurants. However, when he came to Canada, the owner of "Scott's Chicken Villa" convinced him that he would make more money by franchising restaurants than leasing the recipe and so KFC was born.
    The honorary rank of "Colonel" was given to Harland Sanders in appreciation of his culinary service to the state of Kentucky.
    While in Toronto Canada, Colonel Sanders met Peter Grace, who would later open KFC restaurants in Ireland.
    Harland retired to a farm in Cooksville Ontario Canada.
