Soooo today, Diane let ED out of the house
And she took her to the land of Mickey Mouse
It was a reward for all her hard work in Anaheim

Thanks for this video, Diane. My parents had a Theme Park in Belgium for 43 years. It started in 1961 as a music center with a venue and a huge beach. The first rides came in 1976. As it was a family business we lived "in" the park, together with my two brothers and two sisters. It was never planned by my parents to start an amusement park; it grew rather organically in that direction. Can't explain what a fantastic youth I've had there. On the other side: there's no such thing as 'fun forever', even if you have roller coasters in your backyard. But we still have very fond memories. Cheers, Tom/Thomas.

Editor Diane expresses my feelings on Disneyland. I remember going as a child with my parents in the late 80s the cost to go wasn’t as bad as it is now. As a child I remember it being magical, so much to see and do, I haven’t been back since as I am trying this thing called Poverty and don’t have the time or money to go.

For a person like Diane (who dislikes crowds), Disneyland is probably Hell on Earth... I had a magical time at Disneyland when I was 11 years old. We went on a Wednesday morning in November of 1977. It was a cold drizzling day and the park was EMPTY. There was no lines or waiting on rides. We rode Space Mountain four times in a row, then we rode it backwards twice (all without leaving our seats). NOTHING can ever compare to that trip to Disneyland. I was spoiled for life (and I have lived in Anaheim, California for over 50 years).

A couple quick things about todays video. The name of the woman who was in the crystal Ball is Leota Toombs (is that the perfect name for someone in the haunted Mansion), she was an Imagineer and help design Disneyland. You are in fact under water in the submarine ride, the top of it isn't underwater but you are. Also its line takes a long time because it has a very low number of riders per hour because of the long load and unload times. Only about 900 people an hour can ride it where Pirates is over 3400.

I was stationed at the Navy base in Orlando back when Disney World was still growing (1975-76) and ended up going at least ten times when friends and relative knew we had an apartment near it.

Hi Diane, great video. We almost had a Disney World here in Australia, located in the Gold Coast Qld. However, at he last minute Warner Brothers won the bid and all the characters had to be changed. Donald Duck to Daffy Duck would have been fairly straight forward possibly rolling him in wet tar...yuk!!! Changing Mickey Mouse to Bugs bunny would have been quite painful I think with the buck teeth shoved in his mouth and stretching his ears...ouch!!! Pluto becoming Silvester would have been quite a challenge and I wouldn't even try to imagine the character changes to Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig. Anyway, wishing you the very best. It's so amazing how it's a destination that people come from all over the world to visit, but for me going there was just as normal as going to the mall. Now that I don't live there anymore, I sure wish I hadn't taken it for granted.

On a side note, if you ever get to San Diego, my wife and I would be delighted to show you some of the sights, or, if your time is limited, at least treat you to a very good Mexican meal at a local restaurant. In my very humble opinion there are many other restaurants not owned by large corporations that are much better than Chipotle. Just my two cents, as they say. 😊

Disney is the world leader in disguising queues. Many a ride looks like it has almost no line, you get in the queue, and after 10 minutes you go inside a building or another room or around a corner and BAM! Another 30 minutes of queue.

The one piece of advice which people forget to give is that to enjoy Disneyland, one has to suspend the ability to get annoyed at things for about 24 hours. Just let go of worrying about other pushy goofballs, crowds, prices high enough that you have to sell your kids for scientific research to afford it, parking 50 miles away, cheesy rides that aren't as interesting as they should etc. When you simply "let go" of the ability to get annoyed for a day, it is a wonderful place to be a kid again.

    • @OldGeezerstoolbox
      @OldGeezerstoolbox ปีที่แล้ว +1

You have things reversed. People typically allow themselves to get annoyed at things because those things are not under their control: It is a YOU problem in most cases, not a things problem. By suspending your shortcoming, it is a lot more fun and hopefully you can learn to be a little better human being in the process.

There are also a lot of Disney 'Easter eggs', including all the 'hidden Mickeys' everywhere in the park. There used to be a cable car system above ground that ran from a Swiss Chalet building , through a square shaped large opening through the Matterhorn and later added to ride into what was Tomorrow Land. these have been taken down. from Wikipedia: The Skyway closed on November 9, 1994. The reason for closure was attributed to metal fatigue. Stress cracks had developed inside the Matterhorn tower battery supports, and the only way to do maintenance was to open up the Matterhorn to do work on it.

Go to Calico Ghost Town while in Southern Califonria. If I still lived out there I would offer to take you 4x4ing in the mountains to old mines and ghosttowns (and to see bears)....so much fun and history (especially the old cemeteries). Plus look for gold and gems. The tide pools are fun to see the sea life! Universal Studios and San Diego Zoo. Catalina Islands! So much to do.

You may find Disneyland Paris better but they still attempt to rinse one of all one's cash. The Disney family (D'Isney) is a Norman French family that settled in an area now a village in Lincolnshire called Norton Disney, Walt visited to trace his ancestors when he was alive.

Dia dhuit Celtic Princess. Also Lord Chewey, royal companion. My family went once, we were NOT thrilled. My kids 💕 loved Knotts Berry Farm more. My youngest is 29. 😮. I feel so old.
Originally, they had real "mermaids", they were replaced around 1975. Space Mountain was the best when we went.

One thing I don't know if anyone told you but you could have gone to any shop on Main Street and asked for a button that you pin on that says First Visit. The cast member will also write your name one it. The best thing about it is this souvenir pin is FREE! I think ED would have appreciated that.

      @@DianeJennings
The huge burrito is what Californians call a "San Francisco burrito", or at least that used to be the common name. In the early 1970s, Taqueria La Cumbre in the Mission District (the Latino neighborhood around the old Franciscan mission from the 1770s) started making huge burritos because they provided a lot of food at fairly low cost. It doesn't take any more labor to make a big burrito than a small one, and a large part of the cost is labor. The burritos kept getting bigger; soon every taqueria in the Bay Area made them, and they spread out with chains like Chipotle.
The takeaway ones usually aren't cut, because they fall apart once you break the tortilla package. If you eat them at the restaurant, they usually cut them and you eat them with a knife and fork. If you take them away, leaving them in one bundle wrapped in foil means you can eat them with one hand while you walk. It's not unusual to stretch one of those honkin' big burritos out over a couple of meals; I don't think I've been able to finish one at a sitting since I was about 30, which was half a lifetime ago.

The prices at Disney parks and the consumerism are a huge issue related to the corporatization of the Walt Disney Company. It's heartbreaking.
That said, I went probably a dozen times as a kid in the80s and 90s. When I got back from Afghanistan I took my kids there because I wanted to share with my kids a place that was so special to me when I was young and had such wonderful memories. I took my family again a couple of years ago before my oldest left home.
If you go for only a day or two, you end up sprinting from ride to ride and you miss a lot of the little details that make it a magical place. It's definitely best if you go for 4 to 5 days. You can explore the park in the day and at night, relax, try out the different foods, and see the performances without the pressure of having to see everything in such a short time.
I wish that Disney wasn't so politicized and overpriced these days. Had they not gone that route, they could have opened another park or two in the US (probably in Texas, for one). They could have kept the prices within reach of common folks (there's a reason I've only gone twice in the last quarter century, and I don't plan on going again anytime soon), and the lines might be a lot shorter.
The lines I could handle. The prices are too steep. The politics was the last straw.
But I'm glad you had a great time! Love your channel.

Even though I live in Anaheim now, the only time I went to Disneyland was back in the 70s when I was a teenager and due the cost now, I've vowed never to go there again, unless someone else is paying for it or if I somehow was given free tickets. In reality, I actually prefer the less expensive Knott's Berry Farm in nearby Buena Park, which is where I'm at today, taking advantage of my annual pass and meal plan.

My cousin had been to a bunch of different Disney parks before she passed. Her husband and her loved running the half marathons in the parks and had traveled all over the world to run at different parks. I went to Disney in Florida for a high school marching band trip and I am about the least Disney person who has ever been to a Disney park. I've only seen a few of their movies as a very young child and I don't remember them.

Lesson #1: When it doesn't look like there's a line/queue, that means you can't see it, and yes of course it's long.
Went to Disney World a couple of times with my parents long ago, so I have no perspective on costs besides absurdly expensive even then, but we did have coupon books for the rides. I guess that's not a thing anymore. But honestly, the rides look like the same kinds of rides I saw then, tho obvi the tech's better. imo, tho, Space Mountain is absolutely the best coaster ever. And here's my amusement park based rule of body weight: you're not fat unless you can't fit into an amusement park ride seat.

    Couple thoughts.
First, yes the "submarine" actually is a submerged ride. You enter the ride and are seated below the waterline. No tricks. Bubbles make believe you have gone below. The only "magic" is the water tight led screens showing Nemo clips in the distant.
I do wonder if you would have felt as uncomfortable in the sub in 2013 pre Covid as you do in 2023 post (are we really over it?) Covid.
I dont normally watch youtubers doing Disneyland. But you are one of my fave reactionists. This was a blast as I do speak Disney...and it is one of my fav places to go. Hope you at least had some fun. And yes to do it properly takes about 5 days.
    Peace.

The Disney dans yeah they were there since day 1. They change names during Halloween season to the Cadaver Dans as they put on makeup to become zombies. They just go back to normal after October 31st but add Christmas songs to the medley as the instant Halloween ends Christmas season starts. This is quite normal for Disney honestly it’s a bit crazy how the entire park changes to Christmas in one night.
