The World’s Only Scaled Mammal Is ADORABLE

  • There’s no mammal in the world quite like the tree pangolin. Covered in reptilian-like scales that protect it from predators in the wild, the pangolin will curl into a ball when threatened. Unfortunately, such tactics do little to protect it from humans. Superstitions about the unproven healing properties of pangolin scales, and its popularity in the illegal pet trade have taken a serious toll on the worldwide population, and today it is endangered.

      I'd argue Sandslash is closer to being a hedgehog, while Sandshrew is the pangolin. From scales (mostly for defence), to spikes (defence and offence). But I'm fine either way. At last I know what Gamefreak's inspiration was!

    • @darkmerrygoround

      it's probably what those are made out of...since Armadillo's are more like leathery armor shell but for the Pangolin's, their's is made out of the same material as nails and hair.

    • @xTheKonkenx

      scutes are formed on the dermis and are bony with a covering of keratin. scales are formed in the epidermis and are composed solely of keratin. so they actually are two very different things and one could say they are analogous structures. I hope this helps:)

      It does happen all over the world, but in this case, the Chinese are largely to blame. The video said pangolins are thought to have healing properties with no evidence to back that up, so we know they aren't being killed for Western medicine. Chinese medicine is the biggest group that uses animals for healing without scientific evidence, especially endangered ones, and it was in the news, they're also a delicacy in China and Vietnam

    • @SpringheelMac
      @SpringheelMac 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      There is another Pangolins video in the same series that documents the effect poaching is having on their numbers. It specifically mentions poaching for the Chinese market. The reason it's an issue is it is not sustainable in the numbers they are being poached (just like the rhinos and elephants).

Like from the 3 Horned Triceratops & the Ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex. Plus, So it is true, Pangolins are one of the many ancient modern Animals around today. Among the others were Sharks, Rays, Coelacanths, Turtles including Tortoise, Tuataras, Crocodiles, Iguanas, Monitors, Ratites, Vultures, River Dolphins, Armadillos, Anteaters & Rhinos. Do Elephants count? (Depressed Sigh) But like Elephants & Rhinos, Pangolins are being hunted for their Scales. Protect the Endangered Species! Especially those that are ancient looking.

    When you define "scale" it is stated that each of the small, thin horny
    or bony plates protecting the skin of fish and reptiles, typically
    overlapping one another. directly from google search and wiki. So in my
    opinion an Armadillo is quite "scaled" aswell...... "scute" is generally
    applied specifically to an Armadillo and it's anatomy, I've heard it
    for a crocodile aswell once,
    When you define "scute" it is stated: a thickened horny or bony plate on
    a turtle's shell or on the back of a crocodile, stegosaurus, etc.
