Eric, I really enjoy how you gleen the key teaching points out of the pros with your questions. You are a master at questioning and then distilling the information elicited. As a teacher myself, I really enjoy watching you engage in this process. This clip with Steve Pratt is another great example. Pratt is a Mike Austin disciple and I have recently followed his channel. This move Pratt demonstrates here is classic Mike Dunaway and how one should feel that the clubhead is being thrown back behind you at 4:00 (assuming a clock face at address with the 9:00 and 3:00 positions being the target line). It’s a really cool move and great feel. It is not casting as long as the pivot is incorporated, as you point out. Thanks again for another great video.
I've used this swing for years. Came on by accident. I'm a huge fan of Ernest Jones when Jones said the golf swing is a circle I started releasing the left wrist at the top to make a bigger circle with the clubhead. I use Gary Edwin's setup and use Mike Austin's release. I haven't hit a crooked shot since. I teach this method as a side hustle and have improved a bunch of players. Thanks.
Im not big into watching YT instruction but this "feel" was the only thing my instructor got me to do that really helped my swing and my release. Hit 100mph with my 6i on trackman that day and didn't even feel like I was trying. I think this is one "hidden move" that can help a lot of guys who get steep and yank on the handle a bunch.
I had forgotten the Mike Austin swing that you brought up here. Great stuff!! At 70 years young I tried it at the practice tee and got back my 50 year old distance. HOORAY!!
I tried this last Friday and it was fire... i told my friends that i'm going to cast my swing super early while hard turning thru....yes they laughed...but they were in awe when I bombed the shit out of that ball.
Thank you Eric, I do watch your video channel but this throw out Steve is teaching is excellent I’m 58 and his teaching has gained me 10mph club speed I’m just over 100mph average, but my max 114mph, that occasionally I can get that to me, means I still have the ability to get my average up more! Great to see instructors working so well together! EXCELLENT! All the best to you in these difficult times, Stay well and Safe!
thanks ..this was a great easy to understand lesson ,I tried it on the course and it makes me swing smoother with less force at the start of the downswing..much better for my senior body
That's how David Duval used to swing . When i first took up golf , i used to do that naturally but i had other things like alignment and a few other things wrong ( shoulder turn etc ) which brought inconsistency to my game. Over the years to become more consistent , i drifted away from my natural swing as i began to take lessons . After more than a decade , i came back accidentally to this throw out method and since i had worked on my alignment over the years and fixed it , i started hitting the ball pure and accurate . Just couple a days ago i shot 2 over par when i used to shoot in my mid 80's before . Thanks for the clip .
Eric and steve, you guys have good swings, this method works great. Always thought of swing as a trebuchet and this fishing cast makes it work great with driver it lets you hit up on the ball properly. Thanks to both of you
*Thank you, Steve Pratt and Eric Cogorno excellent presentation. IMHO this is what woke up Mr Hogan in the middle of the night in combo with the grip change.*
Ben Hogan described this same move as how he initiated his downswing: “I feel like I’m taking an arrow out of a quiver.” You don’t pull an arrow downward to take it from a quiver, you pull it OUT. If-looking at the golfer face on-your head is twelve o’clock and behind you (along the target) line is 9 o’clock, you pull (or throw) out toward 10 o’clock. It may seem odd, but the club starts building angular momentum and shoots by you.
Thanks for the feedback, Bernard! Thats exactly right...will do more videos on that soon as thats on my list! Talked about it some here: th-cam.com/video/LVVKtHHJprE/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/YJvoc4XLvz8/w-d-xo.html
This is a Jimmy Ballard (Top instructor in the 80's) move. "Springing the Shaft" he calls it. Jimmy says the left hand/wrist folds down like you're thumbing a ride. This does go against the popular "hold the lag" methodology being taught now but is effective. Great explanation of it here, probably better than Jimmy's. Thanks!
I hit my best golf shot with a six iron last week attempting to lay up but went right to the green; of course missed the putt -- but I felt the wrist movement u described. Went right back to old swing and never repeated that good of a shot. Going to hit the range now and see if I can acquire this into regular golf swing; thanks.
Hope you get it sorted....make sure to VIDEO yourself so you can really see what's going on and you dont have to keep guessing. IF you dont get it sorted find a good coach to help you or check out www.cogornogolf.com so I can help you pick the top priorities to work on and HOW
Hey Eric, I really appreciate you're doing this (discussing with the other great teaching pros). I'm sure some of us golfers love to see/hear/try different teaching styles. Just wondering if you could hook up with Gankas, that would be epic!! Thanks.
Thanks! Would love too....we had a day scheduled with him back in February but had some logistical issues so we couldn't get it done. Will link up at some point hopefully....he's awesome!
This is the best method I’ve found. Kind of malaska-ish. If you look at most good swings, it’s all where the right hip is. This method with the natural body turn looks great. This is the swing, then you just “apply the swing” with the athletic turn. The cool thing about this is your turn and weight shift become very natural because your brain feels what it is trying to actually do and not mimic what you think it’s supposed to.
I have been watching Steve’s videos for several months but have never been quite able to connect with his throw. It always has looked like a recipe to get into a hook problem which I had a hell of a time with a few years ago. This is the first time I have seen it demonstrated in this way, and without getting into why, I would really like for you to expand on it if you could. Thanks
Hey Nelson! Glad to hear that...hope it helps! If you are asking about the "why" of the throw out....if you watch back carefully throughout the early to middle part of the video we go over that in detail! 1. Speed 2. Dynamic loft 3. Higher Launch 4. Hitting more UP on the ball More distance!
i got this lesson back in the 70's from the late great ernie vossler. he called it dragging the knuckles (left). he picked it up from arnie's dad. hmmmm i still love it
Eric, I thank you for your efforts to educate us on all the various concepts to golf instruction. I have found that Malaska's method is best for ME but I would really like to hear Mike's reaction to this seeming acceleration of the tipping ( or bumping of the club heel ) to a throwing out motion. Can you speak for him or ask him for me and others ? thank you
Can’t wait to try this one on the range. I’ve experimented with ulnar deviation but it seems like you really exaggerate the move. I think this will also flatten the club from a down the line view. I was experimenting with moving my hands more out in the downswing but I think this could be the missing link Thanks for the great videos!ll
So happy that you two have finally linked up this is going to be an amazing video thank you thank you thank you I struggled yesterday with my driver mightily I feel like I cannot throw it from the top and I'm using my arm to hit the ball and it's so frustrating
Hmmm so that is in sync with Mike Malaska's concept of the release. While playing around with MMs concept I had the feel that my pivot was reacting in a positive way so I would expect this to do the same once my bum ankle is ready to roll. Good stuff Eric, makes sense!
I've seen this move described as driving a speedboat pulling an inner tube and making a sharp left turn, accelerating the tube (clubhead.) Or skating in a group and cracking the whip.
This is Louis Oosthuizen's main swing thought. I saw a video where he explained this principle as one of his swing thoughts. And we all know how he has one of the best swings in the entire world.
Eric this video was awesome! Two of my favorite instructors collaborating. This element of the Mike Austin swing for me has been the hardest to understand/incorporate. This really helped clarify. Do you think the direction of the throw feels the same for irons? Thanks for all your efforts!
Can use with irons....depends on speed you have. Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this. The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that. Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
Really interesting yesterday i saw this video, i thought this was the most stupid video i have ever seen, this couldn't work, BUT today i tried it on the range here in sweden. With 7 iron i normally have 113-114 in ball speed, the best hit today was 119 mph! There is something here that works, of course i need to work more on this but a REALLY good start! :) Thanks Henri
All the great players in history was influenced by Mike Austin. He was feared and not liked much by the PGA as he blow them out the water. He Was a golf Bandit. And what you probably don’t know he cured Ben Hogan’s bad slice and got him to hit the golf ball longer distance.
For those of you who don't know, Steve is a Mike Austin student and promoter of the Austin swing. A super knowledgeable guy and top tier instructor for that system. Thanks Eric
Danny Maude teaches this technique also ..He calls it the catapult swing technique .. once you get the set up and timing and before you know it .... your out driving your boys every weekend.
I will add what I think is a great idea related to the "Throwing Out Motion" which is being presented here, which truly results in speed of the clubhead. It is, in the swing think of your action as resulting in getting "THE SHAFT TO EXTEND TELESCOPICALLY IN LENGTH." This is really the same point that Steve Pratt is making with his Speed Woosh. I have found that if I think of the golf club as a shaft that is telescopic and in my swing I try to have this telescopic device lengthen, I will be throwing the club out as is presented here. I have found that I am very aware of the clubhead and its weight doing this. I quote Bobby Jones from page 14 of "Bobby Jones on Golf", "...the golf club which has be so carefully weighted and balanced, might just as well be a broom handle with nothing at the end. The club (head) cannot be swung unless it can be felt at the end of the shaft." Amen.
Bobby Jones only teacher was Stewart maiden a Scottish pro that came to Atlanta around 1908 to become head pro at east lake, Bobby Jones at six years old followed Stewart around and imitated his swing, maiden taught watts gunn and Alexa Stirling. I wasn't aware of him teaching Mike Austin.
years ago i used to swing like that and it worked very well but then it turned into a flip probably because i wasn't pivoting well. i'll have to review it again and give it a try. thanks eric and steve.
Loving all the other experts you are involving in your latest series...but this is adding to my TH-cam-itis. I'm always trying to combine the various methodologies...and maybe that's my first mistake right there... but if you take this method to increase distance how does this fit with, say, your previous few videos on 'square-to-square' or even the Malaska stuff? Seems to me rolling your forearm and wrist to get the speed cancels out and 'square-2-square' delivery. Or have I just missed the point?
Great observation right here. I'm right there with you. The s2s really resonated with me and made perfect sense. Some of Mike's stuff also like you said. To me then this is a complete contradiction to those methods. I can see how this would produce more speed but at what cost? Just seems a little active to me on first watch
Yes, seems contradicting the square to square method. I've watched a lot of Be Better Golf channel and he traveled around to various instructors and would get good results during a particular session but then on to the next instructor with a different move or thought and do something that was different. I've tried to find the best method (s) to help my swing and stick with those. I'm sure I've combined some that didn't work well together. I think we're supposed to do what they call match up?
I had exactly the same question. I have been working to incorporate the s2s concepts (as best I can with driving ranges closed here) because they made so much sense, but this seems to conflict with the notion of relying on your turn to square the club face. I’ll be very interested to read Eric’s thoughts on this.
Paul Sadd yes I feel the same way to a certain extent. I’m wondering whether they give you just enough to get you on to another channel where you invest in another program to get you the pertinent information required. Not quite sure but I’ll be careful not to mess up what I have. Some things that may be good for some, not so much for others.
This is great. I’ve heard the concept of “throwing the handle out to get the club to move this way but this visual really helped! I swing my driver 115 mph but feel my irons are inconsistent. Hoping this helps. Maybe I’ve been “hanging on too long?” Where can I get one of those sticks like Steve had here?
Eric Cogorno Golf Holy cow! I hit my irons and drives great with this change! Hit a drive 290 on the first hole the. I hit on 300 on another. I hit a 7 iron 190 and flew a green from 168 out! Now, how do I stop over swinging in my backswing? It lends to being wild and inconsistent. I over rotate and turn. Is it a lower body issue? Or arms or what? Nothing works. Can you help me??? Nothing works. PS I broke down and bought your live view golf camera finally! Thanks for that. Getting it this week.
I would really have to see a video of your swing to say WHY its happening and how to fix Start here: th-cam.com/video/Fedg7-TkoAA/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/PsEjgXMqIAs/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/RvhFnMpDxiU/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/pGFXRKq2JwY/w-d-xo.html
Eric Cogorno Golf would I be able to send you a video as a member? I’d like to get one to you. Thanks, Eric. I really appreciate your stuff and share it often. Best regards.
Very interesting video. This throwing out motion ils very similar to Danny Maude's description of the catapult method. The images and feels complement each other really well.
Hi this method as nothing to do with Danny Maudes it’s the great Mike Austin’s method. And he influenced all the greats including Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and meany more. Mike Austin was a golf Bandit and was feared my all the top players and PGA. Thanks Eric for listening to me. You have brought justice to the game of golf. Forget Gancus the only good thing in golf he achieved was being a good caddy, and only copied the greats. And above all not a nice person.
What would be interesting is that after all these collective coaching/teaching sessions, which, if any, of the tips or feels will you look to incorporate into your own swing and the swings of our students?
I think I almost broke my left wrist doing this. Nobody talks about the left arm AFTER impact. Eric, could you please do a detailed lesson on the movements of each part from the left shoulder, elbow to the wrist from impact to finish.
Sure... Here is a little bit on that th-cam.com/video/BlZriUpP7Ns/w-d-xo.html And some on how it depends on your grip/face th-cam.com/video/3QQUyRnRSJU/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting lesson, which elite golfers use Steve’s technique? If Rory, DJ and Matt can hit 330 yards using a more traditional technique would we be more advised to follow them than use the Mike Austin technique advocated by Steve?
Hey Thurlestone! I would go ahead and head on over to Steves channel to see/learn more! A LOT of golfers with lower club head speed have more of a throw out. If you look at LPGA tour (players with clubhead speed more like normal golfers) you will see this much more. PGA players who swing 120mph dont need as much because they dont need to loft If someone swings 90mph its a different game!
Thanks Eric, I have watched quite a few of his videos, and he has impressive results, but was concerned that I might be diving down the wrong rabbit hole. But if you say it is OK that is good enough for me. I remember you showing the arc of the club head going up and out from transition a few weeks ago in one of your excellent videos, exactly what Steve is advocating; so I will give it a try. Here’s to longer and straighter down the fairway!
Hope it helps! Of course I CANNOT say for sure if YOU should or should not do anything without seeing your swing. Check out www.cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing if you dont get it sorted I can help a lot more that way! All the best.
For sure! I have done a "throw out" with literally probably hundred of people with good success! Typically players who dont have as much speed who need more UP angle of attack and more dynamic launch to carry it longer! I've seen this move add 20-40 yards on several occasions. Holding the lag if you dont have enough speed is a distance killer
I’ve been working on this throw-out method for months now and have been having issues topping or hitting balls thin. I now realize I’ve been starting the throw way too late. Interesting...!
Can use with irons....depends on speed you have. Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this. The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that. Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
You COULD. Just not too early. The less speed you have the more you would look to do this (in my opinion) I would just look for a few checkpoints....the timing matters! th-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/w-d-xo.html
So after watching your video of the upright vs flat backswing would this work with both? It seems to favor the flatter backswing and Steve in his other videos talks about swinging UNDER the pane of glass and Mike Austin seemed to rotate the arms a little flatter as well? By way of contrast upright would be Koepka or woodland where they hold the angle a little more because they whip the towel at the end with vertical force?
Hey Jacob! That conversation requires a lot of "ifs" and micro details....it's not quite a yes or no answer to does it work with both. Conversation perhaps for another day
Thanks for the reply. It gets so confusing trying to put parts together. I'm taking lesson from a PGA certified coach but having a hard time understanding all the variables. His big thing is ground/vertical forces but never describes what the arms are doing. More of an upward wrist hinge in the backswing and using my glutes to counter balance. Where it gets weird is it Seems like the "pump drill" or holding the angle works great with more VERTICAL feels but this is a totally different animal! This throwing out works great as well and a lot more relaxed and fluid as long as I swing more "around" myself. I'm hoping to teach golf one day but these waters get really muddy and nobody wants to give away any of their true secrets it seems. My concern is the students and the game as a big picture. It's not fun for most people and the deeper you get the less sense it makes because of all the deception and secrecy. Hard for a game to grow if elites hoard all the secret sauce and only share the leftovers.
Just as a side note I plan on doing full day lessons with Chris Como, Steve Pratt and Mike Malaska to help me put all the pieces together(if I'm still interested) but that's going to cost me about $8,000. I have already put 10 years into trying to grasp the swing and the mechanics. (400 books, videos, lessons, injuries, programs, training aids etc etc etc) , so either I am a terrible student or the golf industry is failing people!
Hey! All depends on your other variables in your swing. Those include clubface angle...swing speed, etc. Head over to Steve's channel to see more of his thoughts on irons should help!
So another quick question. Does this technique recquire totally different equipment since it is dramatically different forces? You cant "throw out" a a D5 the same as a C5?
Eric - I was taught to pull the butt end of the club to the ball. Not good. My error is releasing late and flipping to save. I was told by a teacher to swish the club from the top and get the swish at its max at the ball and beyond. Doesn’t that accomplish basically what is being taught here by Steve? Thanks.
You are just a wonderful, gifted teacher. And very generous. Question: I got the IMPACT SNAP five weeks ago and have been working it religiously. After watching this video with Steve Pratt, my question: Is it possible to mesh the Throw method and the Impact Snap release together in a swing? To me, the Snap is absolutely great for consistency of strike and accuracy. The Throw really widens the arc but going into extension from the top seems really tough to combine the two.
Thank you for the kind words! That's a good question. I'm not sure. I would touch base with Steve on his channel and ask him this very same question and see what he says!
Can use with irons....depends on speed you have. Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this. The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that. Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
@@CogornoGolf I thought so. I am arm dropper or more of a handle dragger. Hoping this will sort out my driver consistency and give me the distance I feel I should have 🤣great vid thanks for replying
Can work with irons....much more for lower clubhead speeds. The less speed you need the less shaft lean you need. So I would have to see your swing on video to say for sure Scott if YOU should do it or not. All depends on your clubhead speed and what you are currently doing!
Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this. The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that. Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
He did a special on the Golf channel (playing lesson) with Charlie Reimer where he talked about a “casting motion” he did during his glory years. Check it out. BTW, you’re the BEST instructor on TH-cam!
I just think about swinging my hands away from the target at the start of the downswing, and I am KILLING the ball. The rest of the swings seems to full into place.
Hey Bill! Not when you include the motions of the body and the effect it will have. Note in there where Steve mentioned this is isolating JUST the hand/arm movements with no body....when you add the body motion and its effect on the club it will look different
Eric Cogorno Golf thanks Eric. Maybe a followup video connecting the entire sequence? I know you put the full swing on it, but maybe a slow motion explanation of the connection of the entire sequence would be immensely helpful. As always, another great guest and video. Your production quality is getting better every video. I think this wrist action is the final piece of the puzzle of how people can increase clubhead speed without sacrificing rotational integrity...just saying
No. It is not casting unless you fall to turn your body out in front of your arms. This turning of the chest pins your passive upper left arm against your chest (while your hands stay back) and you will not cast. Also, be sure you are coming in shallow.
@@CogornoGolf Agree! Gotta get that pivot sequenced out in front...which will leave you with plenty of forward lean and ball compression on your irons.
Her Peter! If you go ahead back and watch/listen closely you will see the part where Steve explains that this movement ONLY looks like this because its in isolation. When you blend the other parts of the swing with is and the body motions it will look normal. Watch again the first half....I think it will help!
Tried this out on the course for the first time and bombed my weak lofted 7 iron over 170 yards. This really is a game changer. I'm never going to hold the lag ever again.
Bottom line...95% of tour players maintain a near 90 degree angle between the right forearm and the shaft into P6. No one is dumping the angle out of the top. Gears data is conclusive, there is a down cocking or additional wrist set that happens out of the top. I absolutely LOVE your instruction Eric, but forget everything this guy just said ASAP. Plus he's wearing pleated pants...double red flags brah.
Hello my friend... Unfortunately the basis of your comment includes a KEY phrase....."TOUR PLAYERS". See the thing about using tour players is their clubhead speed is high. Let's say 115 mph on average. In the video as Steve mentioned the average of the golfing population is around 90pm Thats 25mph slower. The reality is the math is straight forward. The SLOWER the speed the MORE dynamic loft is needed, the spin loft needs to be different, the angle of attack and launch HIGHER to get more distance. So when someone swings 115 mph they DO NOT need all that....becuase they have enough speed. Not the other way around. FORTUNATELY I have been doing this "throw away" with people for about 5-6 years from player with less speed (under 100mph) and have had GREAT success with literally hundreds of golfers. So unfortunately you're comparing apples to oranges here my friend. No argument about the PGA tour moves....thats not who this videos is for. All the best
@@CogornoGolf @jballoregon Actually Dr. Kwon, Chris Como's mentor at Texas Women's University, and others, have proven conclusively using inverse dynamics that all tour players start applying uncocking torque at the grip from near the top of the swing, as we demonstrate in this video. But it takes a moment for the torque to build to maximum and actually start to straighten out the angle. This also gets 'hidden' as it is synced up with the pivot. Thanks so much for your comment!
You physically CANT dump the angle if you are turning fast. The golf swing is invisible. You are seeing effects and not causes. If you go swing a club this way with NO turn you will cast and stick it in the ground! Now if you do this with a VERY FAST turn the club will never touch the ground and it will "lag" behind. The faster the turn the harder you can "throw out" yet it doesn't actually catch up til much later in the swing. DONT BELIEVE IT? Try to turn fast AND dump the club. They literally just demonstrated it in this video. You could see Eric's intention on the swing then you can see what actually happens. Once speed/momentum/gravity get involved all "logic" is flipped on its head.
Good way to blow out your elbow. The golf swing naturally, is hard on the elbows. Sorry, but your a great golf teacher but, this elbow popper is going to hurt some old gizzer like myself.
@@CogornoGolf This is why the right forearm MUST pronate (turn over) through the impact zone. The pronator teres does not just rotate the forearm, it also serves as an antagonist to the TRICEP...thereby acting as a BRAKE on the elbow extension - never letting the humerus (upper arm bone) bang into the radius (forearm) or tear through the connective tissue. Similar to a martial arts punch.
Eric, I really enjoy how you gleen the key teaching points out of the pros with your questions. You are a master at questioning and then distilling the information elicited.
Love it! Back on track my friend!
Eric and steve, you guys have good swings, this method works great. Always thought of swing as a trebuchet and this fishing cast makes it work great with driver it lets you hit up on the ball properly. Thanks to both of you
Yes!! Thank you!
I can't believe Steve Pratt featured here. What a treat!
He's great!
*Thank you, Steve Pratt and Eric Cogorno excellent presentation. IMHO this is what woke up Mr Hogan in the middle of the night in combo with the grip change.*
Thank you!
Best instruction I have seen regarding driving.
Thanks, Jason!
Talked about it some here: th-cam.com/video/LVVKtHHJprE/w-d-xo.html

@@CogornoGolf Now I understand Hogan's "taking an arrow out of the quiver." I'll bet that scarce people understand that statement.
Thanks!
Appreciate it, Scott!
Glad its helped, Jeff!
1. Speed
2. Dynamic loft
3. Higher Launch
4. Hitting more UP on the ball
More distance!
Only thing that has helped me in shallowing the club, appreciate the help.
Glad to hear that!
i got this lesson back in the 70's from the late great ernie vossler. he called it dragging the knuckles (left). he picked it up from arnie's dad. hmmmm i still love it
Love it!
You two are my favorite instructors… thanks!
Eric, I thank you for your efforts to educate us on all the various concepts to golf instruction. I have found that Malaska's method is best for ME but I would really like to hear Mike's reaction to this seeming acceleration of the tipping ( or bumping of the club heel ) to a throwing out motion. Can you speak for him or ask him for me and others ? thank you
Our pleasure my friend!
Best to head over to his channel and ask him directly! He's a great guy and very passionate-I'm sure he will be happy to help!
Can’t wait to try this one on the range. I’ve experimented with ulnar deviation but it seems like you really exaggerate the move. I think this will also flatten the club from a down the line view.
I was experimenting with moving my hands more out in the downswing but I think this could be the missing link
Thanks for the great videos!ll
Our pleasure Jason!
Hope it helps, Michael!
Steve has a swing that looks so effortless. There is something here. Time to start trying this.
He's a great ball striker!
Just what I needed. Thanks, guys.
Our pleasure-hope it helps, Mike!
I've seen this move described as driving a speedboat pulling an inner tube and making a sharp left turn, accelerating the tube (clubhead.) Or skating in a group and cracking the whip.
Whatever visual helps!
This is Louis Oosthuizen's main swing thought. I saw a video where he explained this principle as one of his swing thoughts. And we all know how he has one of the best swings in the entire world.
:)
Eric Cogorno Golf That makes sense. Thanks for the reply!
Nice video. As Stan Utley would say “Get the club head moving
👊
Thanks Joe!
:)
All the great players in history was influenced by Mike Austin. He was feared and not liked much by the PGA as he blow them out the water. He Was a golf Bandit. And what you probably don’t know he cured Ben Hogan’s bad slice and got him to hit the golf ball longer distance.
Love it!
absolutely a gem, thank you!!!
:)
For those of you who don't know, Steve is a Mike Austin student and promoter of the Austin swing. A super knowledgeable guy and top tier instructor for that system. Thanks Eric
Our pleasure, Anthony! He's great!
Danny Maude teaches this technique also ..He calls it the catapult swing technique .. once you get the set up and timing and before you know it .... your out driving your boys every weekend.
Excellent! Danny is great!
William Bennett Harris May I ask William if the move helped?
Ian Tweedie yeah it stops me from throwing my lag away too early, as counterintuitive as that might sound. I’ve picked up a few yards for sure
Bobby Jones was taught by Mike Austin’s golf coach at one point.
This can help with throwing those angles at p4-p5. Monte Scheinblum just put me on this move or feel. Same as what we chatted about last week
Yessir
years ago i used to swing like that and it worked very well but then it turned into a flip probably because i wasn't pivoting well. i'll have to review it again and give it a try. thanks eric and steve.
Our pleasure, Steve! Hope it helps!
Loving all the other experts you are involving in your latest series...but this is adding to my TH-cam-itis.
I'm always trying to combine the various methodologies...and maybe that's my first mistake right there...
but if you take this method to increase distance how does this fit with, say, your previous few videos on
'square-to-square' or even the Malaska stuff? Seems to me rolling your forearm and wrist to get the speed
cancels out and 'square-2-square' delivery.
This is very similar to Malaska’s teaching of directing the force into the back of the ball, starting from top of backswing.
I have been working to incorporate the s2s concepts (as best I can with driving ranges closed here) because they made so much sense, but this seems to conflict with the notion of relying on
your turn to square the club face.
Maybe I’ve been “hanging on too long?”
Where can I get one of those sticks like Steve had here?
Love it!
Touch base with Steve at his channel and he can help!
I would really have to see a video of your swing to say WHY its happening and how to fix

Thanks, Eric. I really appreciate your stuff and share it often. Best regards.
Great video, this method has helped me hit my longer much better
Excellent! Thank you!!
Fascinating! Does anyone else recognise Dalton McCreery’s teaching? (The no Drop Zone) or am I wrong about this?
Hope you enjoyed!
Exactly...Dalton McCrary has been teaching this for decades...his methods are way easier to understand/apply tho, IMHO.
hola la verdad imprecionante video lo disfrute necesito el proximo material me despido les envio besis muchas gracias
Very interesting video. This throwing out motion ils very similar to Danny Maude's description of the catapult method. The images and feels complement each other really well.
Awesome!
@@CogornoGolf Something clicked when I combined the idea of the outward throw with the catapult. I may have had my eureka golf moment. Thank you.
Would be a cool video one day!
This works and looks fine in full speed. The drills/rehearsals will draw some odd looks though
:) Thanks for watching!
Isnt this the move that Mike Austin and Mike Dunaway achieved incredible distances and club head speed? I think that’s what Steve advocates?
Yup!
I think I almost broke my left wrist doing this. Nobody talks about the left arm AFTER impact. Eric, could you please do a detailed lesson on the movements of each part from the left shoulder, elbow to the wrist from impact to finish.
Sure...
Here is a little bit on that
th-cam.com/video/BlZriUpP7Ns/w-d-xo.html
And some on how it depends on your grip/face
th-cam.com/video/3QQUyRnRSJU/w-d-xo.html
Very interesting lesson, which elite golfers use Steve’s technique? If Rory, DJ and Matt can hit 330 yards using a more traditional technique would we be more advised to follow them than use the Mike Austin technique advocated by Steve?
Hey Thurlestone! I would go ahead and head on over to Steves channel to see/learn more!
A LOT of golfers with lower club head speed have more of a throw out. If you look at LPGA tour (players with clubhead speed more like normal golfers) you will see this much more.
PGA players who swing 120mph dont need as much because they dont need to loft
If someone swings 90mph its a different game!
Good stuff!
Thanks, Daniel!
You talked about this method with the driver and hitting up would how would apply to irons hitting down. Thx
Personally I would not do it as much with ball on the ground
th-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/w-d-xo.html
I suppose everybody learns in slightly different ways, so this method/feeling/emphasis could be helpful for folks.
Hope you get it sorted my friend!
Love it 😀😀😀
Awesome golf drill
Thanks!
That's eye opening for sure. How does this affect iron play?
Can use with irons....depends on speed you have.
Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this.
The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that.
Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
Would you use this same method with your irons?
You COULD.
Just not too early.
The less speed you have the more you would look to do this (in my opinion)
I would just look for a few checkpoints....the timing matters!
th-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/w-d-xo.html
Is this more about ulnar deviating the left wrist or extending it? Thank you
I believe both!
:)
I had been focusing on the 4 o’clock feeling you talk about. Is that consistent with this?
When using the outthrow with irons, are you able to get forward shaft lean or are you more apt to flip?
Hey Jacob! Good question to ask Steve on his channel!
Eric - I was taught to pull the butt end of the club to the ball. Not good. My error is releasing late and flipping to save. I was told by a teacher to swish the club from the top and get the swish at its max at the ball and beyond. Doesn’t that accomplish basically what is being taught here by Steve? Thanks.
Yep sounds right
Thanks Eric!
Can you use either a throw or a twist release with this method?
Yup!
Does this apply to both the upright and flat swings?
Yep
Is this method only applicable to a driver? Meaning the angle of attach is always up with the throw out method?
Can use with irons....depends on speed you have.
Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this.
The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that.
Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
@@CogornoGolf Thank you, Eric
I know this an older video but does this apply to irons as well?
Hey James!
Personally I would not do it as much with ball on the ground
th-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/w-d-xo.html
@@CogornoGolf I thought so. I am arm dropper or more of a handle dragger. Hoping this will sort out my driver consistency and give me the distance I feel I should have 🤣great vid thanks for replying
does this also apply to irons?
Not as much
Does this drill work also for irons? Or is it mainly for driver or woods teed up?
Can work with irons....much more for lower clubhead speeds. The less speed you need the less shaft lean you need.
So I would have to see your swing on video to say for sure Scott if YOU should do it or not.
All depends on your clubhead speed and what you are currently doing!
Eric Cogorno Golf ...what swing speed range do you mean?
Under 100mph with driver would be "slow"
When ever I try this the club pulls me hard away from the target and I never get off my back foot
I am interested to hear how one would use this with an iron rather than a driver.
Someone who needs more loft typically who has less speed would need more of this.
The less SPEED you have the LESS shaft lean you should have. So more throw out can help that.
Probably more with longer clubs and less and less the shorter the club!
Does this work with irons
Depends on the player
th-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/w-d-xo.html
There are two swings. The pull down and twist vs the throw and rotate.
Don’t confuse them people!!!
How do you do this with irons?
Not sure I would :)
Next time at the driving range, borrow a 3 or 4 iron blade. The only way to pure the impact is by this method.
👊
Appreciate you watching, Gustavo!
Not doubting the method but why do I think this could result in “casting the club”.
Check out Steve and his channel for more of his explanations on this!
Love your videos but auto focus can be hard to watch. Just letting you know, Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback! Will check into it!
Is this wrist move not casting?
Yep!
Is this the David Duval concept?
Hey John! Not sure...what's the David Duval concept?
He did a special on the Golf channel (playing lesson) with Charlie Reimer where he talked about a “casting motion” he did during his glory years. Check it out. BTW, you’re the BEST instructor on TH-cam!
Ahh I gotcha....havent seen that will give it a look. Thanks! He certainly could golf his ball well :)
I just think about swinging my hands away from the target at the start of the downswing, and I am KILLING the ball. The rest of the swings seems to full into place.
Excellent
This is the malaskamove
👍
This looks a lot like Dalton McCrays drills
Awesome!
Isn’t this the text book example of casting from the top?
Thanks Bill! Will keep in mind and will see! If you head to Steve's channel he should have much more info on this that you are looking for!
Eric Cogorno Golf will do thank you Eric
No. It is not casting unless you fall to turn your body out in front of your arms. This turning of the chest pins your passive upper left arm against your chest (while your hands stay back) and you will not cast. Also, be sure you are coming in shallow.
Centrifugal force!!!
It appears to me it seems like casting the club
it is, if you don't add the pivot
I suggest going over the Malaska videos. He makes the same points but also addresses the force vectors that are in play. Explains everything.
Hey Scott!
As mentioned below and in video as Steve said....see what happens when you blend with pivot.....go from there.
@@CogornoGolf Agree! Gotta get that pivot sequenced out in front...which will leave you with plenty of forward lean and ball compression on your irons.
Mike Austin cast the club
How is this not casing your hands?
Her Peter! If you go ahead back and watch/listen closely you will see the part where Steve explains that this movement ONLY looks like this because its in isolation.
When you blend the other parts of the swing with is and the body motions it will look normal.
Watch again the first half....I think it will help!
It's not casting if you turn your body out in front of it. Don't stop turning your chest.
Eric.. I'm a big fan.. . but I'm not really buying into this very well...
Hey Steve! Thats ok! Thanks for being with us!
It's almost like yeah.
That doesn't cup the wrist?
Sacrilege! No no no, we must "hold the lag"!
😁
:)
You have been watching to many crap TH-cam videos 👊
Tried this out on the course for the first time and bombed my weak lofted 7 iron over 170 yards. This really is a game changer. I'm never going to hold the lag ever again.
@@carlosmolina292 On the list of bad concepts and awful intentions, "holding lag " probably is number one. Good for you.
In the video as Steve mentioned the average of the golfing population is around 90pm
Thats 25mph slower.
Well that’s different....
Hope it helps!
Good way to blow out your elbow. The golf swing naturally, is hard on the elbows. Sorry, but your a great golf teacher but, this elbow popper is going to hurt some old gizzer like myself.
Thanks for the feedback, Daniel! I hope not!
First we get the money, then we get the khakis...🗿
Lol
