@mhawang4238 christy did say they're irish, but I don't think either corrected Alonso when he said they're from the UK. UK = England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The republic of Ireland is its own independent state. Look its all good anyway. I'm not gonna lose any sleep over this 👍🏼
Oh wow, I read this novel before I'm Thinking of Ending Things and before I really knew who Iain Reid was. I liked the novel but didn't love it. Definitely an intriguing premise. I had no idea a movie adaptation was coming. It's a shame they blew it.
The angsty Midwestern couple who's always mildly sweaty and glistening with perspiration mixed with thee auburn color pallet slightly reminds me of Body Heat😅
Sairse Ronan might be one of the best actresses alive but she has been in a couple awful movies including sadly Ryan Gosling ditectorial debut and a few others.
I just saw lion on tv. It has a great first act and then it just fizzles out completely. You are literally just waiting for the end where he gets reunited with his mom, but nothing remotely interesting happens until that moment. Must have been a slow year if that was nominated for an Oscar.
Your opening comment hit it on the head. Add to that a woman 3 seats over who has to constantly comment. Ooh a dustbowl! Oh, it's raining! Oh, the same guy as before! Most interesting thing(s) about the movie were Aaron Pierre's eyes. Did they do a chemistry test with Paul and Saoirse beforehand?! Looking at my watch SO often!
Lion was pretty powerful. I watched it late because I was like “meh Aussie adoption movie” but by the end of it, I was a weepy mess. It captures everyday suburbia Australian life perfectly.
I just finished watching it, solely because of the cast and the AI companion theme. I was concerned about the depressing beginning, but wasn't disappointed I stuck through the whole story. It really recalled Interstellar's sense of hopelessness at what corporations have purposely done to our own biome. I DID invest in the characters, I WASN'T annoyed by the odd nature of their powerlessness vs. the powers that be & I was more distressed by the despair that Hen & Jr. faced every day of their life.
Well said! I really loved this movie. I too became invested in the characters, and in their strained relationships in their dystopian world. The film continues to haunt me - after a few months and as many viewings - and I look forward to immersing myself again this afternoon.
This review is very fair. It makes sense (kinda) if you stick it out to the end, and there are nice parts to it, but the plot is weak and agree not enough about why they even got married in the first place. Was almost like a weird artsy play.
Yeah I also love the book and author Iain Reid. Great cast in the film as well, super disappointing to hear how bad it's turned out. Maybe Charlie Kaufman shoulda just directed this as well?
As an enormous fan of the book, this is worryingly reminding me of the adaptation of 'The Beach'. Where they tried to make it to cool and lost the soul of it. There's no way I'm not seeing it in theatres because I love the actors too much to not give it a fair shake but God, this sucks to hear.
Ahh yes Garth Davis, not to be confused with Gareth Edwards of Rogue One and the Creator or Gareth Evans of the Raid movies... such a shame cause Lion was such a great movie
Damn I was looking forward to see this. I read somewhere Greta Gerwig offered Saoirse Ronan a role in Barbie, but she couldn't do it because of this movie.
Was not aware of this movie. Did not see any trailer. But now, I am curious how bad it could be.... hahaha... So far, my most disappointed movie for 2023 is 65, and this is a movie you warned me not to watch... hahaha...
Very weird movie. I love Ronan, but this was not her best. Very confusing, did not pick up on the story until near the end of the movie. Very disappointed. Still hoping for a future oscar for Ronan though :)
Mescal and Ronan are not from the UK. Theyre from the Republic of Ireland.
Yes we said that, thanks!

I enjoyed the book but the whole time reading it I was wondering how they were going to flesh this out into a full length feature film.
The angsty Midwestern couple who's always mildly sweaty and glistening with perspiration mixed with thee auburn color pallet slightly reminds me of Body Heat😅
It’s hard to imagine that Ronan and Mescal couldn’t rescue any film in which they might find themselves, but FOE is one of them.
I can’t believe Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal are in a bad movie 😭

That’s interesting, what about it rang true for you about Australian suburbia?
I'm sorry, but this does not even capture the point of the movie. This is a 10/10 film..I think the point was totally lost on these people.
What are we missing? Please let us know. Glad you enjoyed the film more than we did.

Wasn't this a "Black Mirror" episode. Kinda, anyway. The one with Jesse from "Breaking Bad."
The book came first, but obviously it was bad timing with BM.
The Fubo tv ad placement 😂😂

Ha, that's a good way to describe it!
Heaven forbid a movie try to be artistic.
Is the reveal, that F O E stands for fraternal order of eagles ?
If only!
Damn that sucks! The book was actually really good and could have been adapted in an interesting way

I've not read the book but I really loved the film.
It's seems like a hot science fiction movie starting Paul Mescal so I have to watch it 😳
Hate to be that guy but Mescal and Ronan are NOT from the UK, they are Irish 😖 touchy history there

Christy can make an entertaining review even out of a bad movie.
Ha, we try around here.
I watch WTF reviews of Adam Sandler movies all the time!!!
Serious question....do you recommend seeing Fee and Fi before seeing Foe ? Perhaps I'll wait till Fum comes out and binge watch em all.
Ha! Maybe Fee and Fi help explain what their marriage was like before Aaron Pierre shows up.
Is that a plastic straw??
Great review Christy.

Did alonso just say they are from the UK? LOL. Dont say that to an irish person if you want to live

It was just gonna be a cameo anyway, but what a shame for Ronan. She’s an amazing actress.
Listened to the Foe audiobook and wondered what scriptwriters would do with the story. It’s too bad the film was a failure.
I want to watch it. I like Paul Mescal.
i was excited because of the actors, but now hahah.
So apparently this movie is a hard pass, but looking at Saiorse's movies "Brooklyn" I really liked and "Lady Bird" I thought was highly overrated.
Right, she's always great!
