The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

I read somewhere that this one time Capablanca was waiting for a train with his chessboard under his arm and this guy approached him and asked whether he’d like to play a game. Of course Capablanca said yes and after he set up the board he removed his own queen. The guy angrily asked Capa why he had done so and said Capablanca couldn’t possibly know he was going to beat him. Capablanca smiled and said: “Sir, if you could beat me I would know who you are”

man, ur channel made me fall in love with chess again after 27 years...
my doctor asked my mom to stop me from playing chess cause it was so hard on my brain, so he thought.
they didn't let me go the last day of a tournament the day after that doctor appointment and I was declared 4th, I was 7 years old.
that made me hate chess and ur hard work has paid off here and I am back man, playing it every day and loving it.
tnx for all the hard work man...
    good luck

Off topic - dat buzz cut on Rubinstein. Is there a story behind that haircut? I don't remember buzz cuts in the old black and white photographs I've seen over the years. Hair was important back then, with intense social pressure to conform. Currently, the social pressure for hair is no longer conformist, but expressionist. if that's the right term. Today, it's common to have a unique or comic book haircut, which I highly approve. Back then, if you're hair wasn't right, there was shunning and double-takes, if not harrumphs at folks not able to conform to the trend in men's hair fashion. They had hair ointments, pomades, and waxes to keep the hair plastered in place. It was a sign of incompetence, and moment of disappointment, if your hair was mussed. People would take you aside and explain about your hair. If you let your hair grow, it was a freak show, and it would inspire fear because you would appear savage or insane. My guess is that this buzz cut of Rubinstein is from either the military or the health food movement from a hundred years ago.

I feel I understand Capablanca’s chess style. He didn’t feel opening theory was wildly necessary for him because he knew how to meander and ad lib cuz his goal was immediate eradication (trading pieces) of pieces off the board because he knew his end game skills were his strength. He’d either win or draw.

10:25 -- I don't understand the Rubenstein-trashing at this point, as the engine doesn't indicate that c4 is any less of a draw than xb4. For example....
11:07 -- Would Capablanca really prefer b3 over Kh7? His queen is sidelined and overloaded with responsibilities, and I doubt he would think he is in an advantageous position at this point.
11:13 -- If Capablanca does choose the weaker b3, and is met with g6, then he should do Qa8 right away rather than capturing. This leads (slowly) to a drawn game as well after a3, Qf8, Qb6, Kf1, Kf8, Ke1, fxg6 (only now, with the queen by king's side, would the engine have Black exchange these pawns), hxg6, Qc8. White's queen is now stuck guarding the g6 pawn, Black's queen the c5 pawn, and nobody can make headway. After Qc8, the engine will very briefly depict that White is +2.5, but then rapidly draw down the position to 0.00 by depth 25.

One cool thing about the Capablanca saga is that, being so strong, JRC really allows you to see what his opponents are all about.
I've particularly enjoyed getting a feel for Rubinstein's game.

3:38 Agadmator 2019: "Rubenstein says, "Alright, I'll take that pawn, sir.""
I didn't know Akiba Rubenstein mistakes knights for pawns. He clearly needed new glasses.
