In the early spring of 1911, fifteen chess masters were invited to the seaside town of San Sebastian, Spain to compete in a round robin tournament. (1) Each player was invited based on a previous result. Every participant had won either first or second place in a chess master tournament, or two or more fourth place prizes. The turnout was a veritable who's who of chess mastery: Established masters such as Tarrasch, Frank James Marshall, Carl Schlechter, Geza Maroczy, David Janowski, and Amos Burn, and newer stars like Akiba Rubinstein, Aron Nimzowitsch, and Rudolph Spielmann were all in attendance. The tournament also marked the European debut of Jose Raul Capablanca, who had garnered fame for defeating Marshall in a match. The only noticeable absence was the world champion, Emanuel Lasker. As a result of this method of invitation, this tournament is often considered to be one of the strongest held in chess history. Games were played in the Gran Casino from February 20th to March 17th. The time control for the tournament stipulated that fifteen moves must be played each hour. Initially, Ossip Bernstein had objected to Jacques Mieses, the tournament organizer, about Capablanca's inclusion in the tournament based on one match victory. Capablanca proved himself first by defeating Bernstein in the first round, silencing his protests for the rest of the tournament. He then went on admirably to win clear first in the tournament, taking home the 5000 Franc prize, as well as winning the brilliancy prize. Rubinstein and Dr. Milan Vidmar shared second place behind Capablanca, while Marshall took clear fourth. The tournament was a landmark both in its strength and in heralding the arrival of Capablanca, a superb tournament player with a long career of victories ahead as well as becoming future world champion.

He read his book and makes notes. He has access to Wiki and other sites. There is no need for him to keep all this information in his head. No doubt he has good knowledge but he prepares for each video and probably has these notes on screen. He also has excellent verbal skills for English as a second language and he is much superior to people who's language is only English. He is a tad obsessive and a little bit overly worried about perfection and upsetting viewers by making even minor mistakes. He tends to include excessive minor detail but overall he is an expert commentator. It is surprising to me that his FIDE ratings are only in the 1800's. I expected about 2200. So his verbal IQ is much higher than his visuospatial chess IQ.
Anyway these are only my opinions and his videos are my favorite on TH-cam.

Really really really enjoying this Capablanca Saga! All the background is not only interesting, but actually quite pertinent, the quite obvious example here being that Bernstein complained to the arbitor about Capablanca's involvement in the tournament. That's actually fairly essential information to help understand how the game went.
I'm very glad the people voted for this series, even though I wasn't one of them! :)

i found the following checkmate sequence. it's mate in 6 (18:57):
[1] Queen e3 check, King has to capture Pawn, otherwise mate in 2 as shown in video.
[2] Then Rook g2 check. King to go h4 (if King takes Knight on h5, then queen h3 check mate).
[3] Then Queen f4 check. King to h3. If King captures Knight, then Rook captures Rook. (4) King to h4 to survive for one more move. (5) Then Queen f4 check and (6) next move you kiss the King with the Queen
[4] Then Rook c3 check. Black Rook blocks with g3
[5] then Queen or one of the Rooks g3 checkmate :D

Capablanca didn’t know opening theory, he is the opening theory.

Hey Boss! You should change your aspect ratio to 16:9 or wider, that would look allot better on TH-cam. You will also be able to fit more in your frame✌️🤓

    1Kth like from me😁. Also from the position what about the line - Qf6, Kg4, Rg2, Kh3, Nf4?

I think I read somewhere that he needed to beat Lasker by 2 points to claim the title but that was not widely published

At the 17 minuets mark dose Qf6+ not lead to mate after kxg4 then Rg2+ then Kxg5 then Rxg8 is there no mate because that seems like there is

Did anyone else stop getting notifications for no reason? I had to unsub and re sub. I used to get them every day and I just realized that I haven't seen a new video pop up in over a week . Hopefully it keeps working now.

YT will unsubscribe certain people at the change of the year if they feel they weren't "active" enough on the channel.
It was covered in one of agadmator's earliest videos of the year

Agad, you should probably ask if we found it interesting rather than if it was enjoyable. Your videos are riveting

He did not think that the pawn could capture the knight. He meant to click on the bishop, but he didn't time his click correctly, or there was a problem with the program. No hate intended to you.

Of course Capablanca knows incredible amounts of opening theory, just by having studied and played so many games!

Agadmator, i can see at least 4 of those players have variations named after them, why capablanca has none ? or maybe because he didnt study opening theories
