To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

I used to play French in serious tournaments for a long time. Now, after a long time without chess I started to play chess online (well, doing it for more than a year atm). And after few months of play I decided to give up on French and pick up another openings. Seriously, during these months I've played more exchange variations as black as I played during all my chess life. I very much agree with Tal on this point - this exchange variation in French is really a crime against chess.

Nice to watch how Capablanca handles the very touchy matter of winning the endgame when he has several pawns for Marshall's extra minor piece.
Just give Marshall's knight a bit more time to gobble Capablanca's king-side pawns and the king-side pawns to start a march of their own, and the game's outcome is reversed.

Capablanca makes chess look easy. He excels at simple positions like nobody else.

    9:46 Why not Qxc4?

      @brahmaarora4045 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because after that Qxg3+, kf1 or kh1, Qxf3+, kg1, Bxd5 attacking the black Queen and threatening check mate

I guess you're right. I don't see a good continuation for black either.

@@brahmaarora4045 I can't be right, these are world champions nonetheless :)
There is no way Marshall missed that. Or maybe he saw some more future advantages for Capa after that ending position.. Who knows

Maybe after Bg2, you push c6, attack the knight. Knight can't move since Queen would be hanging. And you can't capture c6 pawn either.

      @@mckehra14 So 36. Qxc4 Qxg3+ 37. Bg2 Bxh3 38. Qe2. Nice line. If 38. ... Bxg2, then 39. Qxg2 and White is still better after the trading of queens, because the Black pawn in f6 is hanging.

10:56 why didnt white just sac his bishop on c8 and then checkmate with queen to e8 idk if black wouldve seen it but could be a tricky situation

Of course Capa Blanca would not fall for that bait, you know him.

My only question right now....does Capablanca know opening theory at this point?
