Akiba Rubinstein offers Oldrich Duras a queen | Vienna 1908

- The great Akiba Rubinstein was an especially gifted player, especially in the endgame. If there's a list of greatest chess players to never become world champion, Akiba Rubinstein would certainly be on it. This game was from the Vienna Tournament of 1908. Rubinstein played as white against Oldrich Duras, a leading Czech player, and chess composer. In this Queen Pawn Opening, or Reversed Queen's Gambit, Duras opts for a recapture on c5 with his queen. Rubinstein pounces on this poor decision, and is quick to find a middle game combination which secures a small material plus. Observe one of the greatest endgame players do what they do best, namely win without allowing the opponent the smallest degree of counter-play.

"there will be pawns launched with C4"
awesome
I'm loving the regular uploads
That pawn sacrifice at the end to promote the other pawn was very instructive. Ive had similar positions were I'm just confused and Rubinstein converts that position so elegantly.
Ali Vora now remember the pattern
I really love how you had so many pop quizzes this time! It’s such a great way for your audience to participate. Thank you for these ☺️
I love the little sound at the start of Jerry's videos
Yeah it just became his thing, you just know you're gonna hear 'hey everyone it's jerry' soon when you hear that sound
Love it

How about that ending jingle though??
I love those classical game analysis from you. Thank you for taking your time to make videos like this one, they are great.
Hi Jerry! I'm just a casual player that recently started playing again mostly due to my 10 year old developing an interest in the game. Found your channel and have been marathoning your videos! Greatly entertaining and have improved my understanding greatly. So far, I have been batting 1 in 30 on your "pop quizzes", so imagine my surprise when--on your pop quiz at 7:13--I saw a mate in 3! Check with the knight, queen has to take... and then check with the rook FIRST before the bishop move. Thanks!
I really enjoy watching these videos - thanks Jerry.
Very instructive video. I particularly enjoyed that variation you showed with kd8
These analysis videos have improved my game so much. Thanks Jerry and I appreciate the high upload rate recently - your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Overall very informative and entertaining.
Loving the regular uploads! Your chess analysis is both insightful and entertaining. Keep up the amazing work!
I always learn something useful everytime i watch your analysis..thank you.❤
I love how instructional your videos are, I learned a few things today! :)
Nice explanation of why to play Nd2 to block the Q check.
Really helps to understand the strategies involved with these openings.
Thanks Jerry.
Glad you are making videos more often, I was missing them
Great video Jerry , thank you
Even while on vacation, I still make time for Jerry.
That's dedication. 👍
That queen sacrifice was just insane
But insanely amazing
Well played, thanks for the upload
it's so good to see you updating regularly Jerry :>
What a beautiful combination with that knight move in the middle game...thanks Jerry!!
Analysis of mate at b8 the main attraction of this game for me,thanks.
"I hope you took a thing or two away from it" I mean other than listening to your soothing voice, that's kind of why I watch your videos lol.
Awsome cheers Jerry
Excellent!!!
Thank you Jerry!
Beatiful endgame.
A tale of the tape evaluation graph at the end is a great summary of the game if possible Jerry. I know you do this on some games and like they say a picture is worth a thousand words.
Definitely one of the best short mid games I've seen
Thank you
I must say I really liked the "look ahead" approach!
nice video as always Jerry! Managed to get 2 of the pop quizzes this time
Congrats 👍
Are you going to do a vid on the Carlsen-So game?
R d8+ Qxd8 Knight C6 # that's a mate in 2
Amazing game.
You the best bro
Very, very nice game!
👍🏼😎
;) nice video
I am having a very boring time at immigration office. thanks for your timely video. :)
really nice commentary! 16. Nxf8 negates the bishop pair, but is no good because it keeps opposite-colour bishops
I like pausing the video to find the best moves ^.^
Nice video
Can you make about Capablanca vs Lasker or vs Alekhine
You again
Jup
I do not get black 30th move g5. Should be better to move King on h8? To avoid chess in later moves.
Mr.jerry pls suggest me best chess DVDs course.
What about black 16. f6? I guess 17. g4 anyway and maybe Bf7, but you get one move closer to blunting the white dark bishop and getting the rooks connected.
Thanks Jerry
👍🏼
Seventh! By the way, Jerry, have you look at the LC0 improvement?
at 7:31 why not Rd8+ ?
Kc7, Remember it also frees the rook on a8
Any particular reason why we are seeing so many uploads recently?
Travis Hayes gotta make dat esports cash
Hi Jerry…big fan of yours..
You mention Duras being a chess composer; an interesting comment. We’re you referring to his ideas around openings please? …only my thought was… “Aren’t all chess players composers?” As a musician and lowly chess enthusiast your comment ‘struck a chord’ when you mentionedit almost, ‘en passant-like.. 0:41
Your postings are a welcome ‘sanctuary’ from this crazy, troubled, beautiful world. Bless you.
Thank you. By composer I mean chess composer. He created chess compositions (puzzles).
@@ChessNetwork ah gotcha! 👍🙏
Why, when the Black Bishop retreated from d1, didn’t he go to a4, also attacking the White Knight instead of the text move to the Kingside where he’d inevitably get traded for that Knight?
If 13. Kd8, what about 14. Nxf7+? Possibly followed up with Rxd1+? (Apologies if my notation is wrong)
Thanks for the video! On move 16 why doesn't white just play 16.Nxf8 negating the Bishop pair which you said was black's only advantage, forcing the king to recapture, and not opening up the h file for blacks rook?
Plz respond Jerry
good question, the thing is opposite colored bishops offer much more defence ressources. so going after the h5 bishop makes more sense, eventhough it gives the h-file. Moreover castling is not really important in the endgame
Interesting
In the end game, he said that king could go to F3. The king cannot go to F3 because of the Pawn on D4.
article is due tomorrow afternoon but always time for a jerry break I suppose!
Oldrich, saint of the Deep...
You're hating the irregular takedowns.
Around 2:30 you didn't explain why Qd2 or Bd2 weren't good moves. I was thinking Bd2 to put pressure on the black queen and get ready to access the main diagonal.
7:20 you could simply move d1 to d8 and its done on the next move for white.Nno matter what the queens does
So did you kind of figure out how to avoid the crackling? Now I only hear it while you're talking but it's gone during talking breaks
I made a couple adjustments. For non-livestreams/non-talking points it should be gone. Glad you note it as such. Still some things to be checking into though. Thanks again for the feedback.
at 10:15 why didn't black just kick the knight away with a pawn to keep the bishop pair?
He called the square b4 b5 haha.
In the end game why did white give up the a pawn so easily and purposely?
that was a bloodbath
Slash and burn to a pawn chase?
I play the line ...
I think 25... e4 then 26. Rc4 is good enough to hunt the e-pawn because if black defends with 26... f5 27. gxf5 and white simply exchanged the weakest pawn and will hunt down the a-pawn too.
Never mind, he did say that F3 was negated. He just worded it so funny. He confused me.
Chess bullet
Hi Jerry.
Jerry when did you start playing chess?
1988
If white plays 16 Nxf8 it would kill the bishop pair also & prevent black from castling, I can't figure out why 16 Ne5 is better ?
You talk like bill wurtz i like it
Hi Jerry
why do you spoil the game before it starts ? :(
Whatttt??? Regular uploads?
someone told me Rubinstein was a "positional" player, this game doesn't confirm!?
Don't mean to boast by I saw those moves when I paused the video. And I'm not even that good at chess at all. Not at the beginning though. But at the end game I saw that pawn move forward (b5 to b6)
3:17 Tempy?
Tempi. If you use the original latin word "tempus" ("time", in english and "tempo" in portuguese) on singular, "tempi" would be plural, as in "campus" and "campi".
Poor end game play by black, E5 idea was too slow in a critical position, it was already bad but that E5 move ended it with ease.
Jerry when you play again
First! Love ya Jerry!

Greatest chessplayer to never be world champion: Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov.
A better attacker than Tal (Tal said so himself) his life and prime chess years were interruped by World War 2. His attacks were insanely brilliant. Better attacker than Fischer, Tal, or Morphy. Study his games. Rashid is an Attacking Genius.
