One prime example you missed was Darth Zash from SWTOR. She was presented as a beautiful, rational, calm, and even motherly master for the inquisitor at times. However, it was a ploy. In the Dark Temple, she revealed her old haggard form that in the words of the inquisitor “made Rodians look kissable”. She was using rituals to keep her body vivified and youthful. But it wasn’t enough. Eventually the body would give out, so she sought alternatives. She stumbled upon Essence Transfer when reading Tulak Hord’s records. She spent 5 years finding the inquisitor, training them, and gathering the artifacts only to be stopped by the Inquisitor and their friend/servant Khem Val.

@@thalmoragent9344 You'd have to play SWToR as an Inquisitor. She's an NPC you have to deal with as you climb the ranks of the Sith Inquisition. She was doing... some extremely shady things. Even for a Sith.
SWToR is in a grey area between Legends and Canon. Disney has used countless plot points from SWToR, but have not brought up ALL of them. The entire storyline of SWToR is approved by the Story Board - so it SHOULD be a canon retelling of that time period. Including Revan, Darth Vitiate, etc. For some reason a lot of fans think SWToR is entirely Legends - but it has the Story Board logo. (The Story Board is who approves modern canon.) I think half the community just enjoys hating on Disney, so they refuse to accept that Disney has allowed any cool lore into the canon.

Agreed. The darkside is like drugs. You get great power but at a terrible cost. That's why most sith looked to finding ways to achieve immortality or rituals (such as force drain etc) to sustain their bodies/life in the force.
Force degradation aside, sith themselves were their biggest enemy. Its within their own creed. Gaining power is everything. Sith underlings will take any opportunity to seize power from their masters for their own ambitions or if they deemed them weak or no longer useful.
The sith way of life is pretty animalistic. Sort of similar to a lion. A lion is in his prime and then its killed or ousted from another group of powerful lions and the cycle never ends.

It makes sense in that the aging Sith needs to divert more and more of their power to holding their failing bodies together. But that itself is a downward spiral because they are using Dark Side power that also accelerates their physical decay. This is why some of the strongest who manage to live a long time become undead-like beings. Their bodies just fail completely, and they are either strong enough to keep them moving like puppets or else they outright die. Even Palpatine visibly struggled with this problem both in canon and Legends. In Legends, his clone bodies deteriorated very quickly and he wanted to try possessing Leia's child in the hope that a natural body would hold together for longer.

    • @timothyeckard5182
      @timothyeckard5182 ปีที่แล้ว +6

It's better known as dark side degeneration. Prime example of this would be Darth bane in the final book for he has begun to weaken physically despite being in his 40s. In regards to the palpatine clones however, it wasn't just dark side degeneration, we learned that the clones were tampered with to age rapidly. Coupled with heavy use of the dark side palpatine would burn through the clones at an alarming rate. That's why he opted at the very end to transfer his soul to a completely different body. But ultimately that's the nature of the dark side. It gives you great power in the short term, but exacts a heavy toll for it.

I agree, the Dark Side offers tremendous, yet unnatural, power in the force but its give and take and it shows as time goes by. The Light side in contrast gives back in return for maintaining true balance in the Force and assisting the innocent whenever necessary. It does lead me to wonder if this degradation is merely within a given individual's lifespan, or regardless or it; would a Sith of a species known for longevity still get that, or would even they waste away after a "mere" handful of decades? Kenobi was firmly in the tenants of the Light, but even he did his best Murtough impression, claiming to Luke he was getting too old for this, in Star Wars.

There do seem to be limits. Everyone appears to age faster on Tatooine, probably due to UV from two suns. Besides, a part of the reason that the Jedi usually live longer is that they produce more apprentices to do dangerous missions so that Masters don't have to. That's basically the entire story of Obi-Wan and Yoda training Luke to commit patricide.

Can you imagine a Sith apprentice who becomes a dark Jedi who actually acts like an antihero? Let me explain. Imagine he leaves his evil master but doesn’t abandon his dark side yet he doesn’t attack Jedi or people, instead he becomes a dark side hero who protects innocents while still using his anger and dark side powers. The Jedi try to arrest him for being chaotic and sith try to hunt him to turn him to their ranks or outright kill him but he stands alone while being praised as a sort of Robin Hood type who helps the people who can’t protect themselves but still kills and attacks anyone who are a threat to him and he tries to do the right thing. It would be interesting in my opinion. He wouldn’t be powerful however since he would be in complete conflict with the sides.

But the longer you live, the more conflict you encounter, and the greater the chance you will fall short. The dark side accelerates this it doesn't want old men whose aging bodies can barely contain it's power, it hungers for new flesh to infect and turn to its will. Sith live short lives because the very force they serve wills it.

There is likely a mental and emotional aspect to the degradation of dark side users too. A person, no matter how psychopathic or sociopathic, can only hold onto negative feelings of strong intensity for so long before they become numb to it. A lot like pain and other such feelings or emotions, as well. But that constant effort and the dark side need to reinforce the driving emotions means that burning out can happen fast, regardless of rather its anger, rage, hatred, feelings of revenge or ambition that drives their connection to the dark side. They always need more and more over time.
So while the physical degradation is one part of the problem, I bet the mental aspect is the other side of the same coin.

They get weaker physically but their force power doesn’t. It’s just used at a higher rate for each task than a young force user. Like stated, reflexes, will, strength, speed, and amount of force power needed to keep up with their younger self or others is drained and ran thru much faster. Like Yoda for instance. He was super powerful but without the force he could barely walk. I’m sure he had to use it most of the time just to move. And when in combat he had to use it at a high capacity (depending on who he’s fighting and how long) to keep up with powerful force users and long term encounters. He would run thru his reserve way quicker than a younger Yoda would. If Yoda was a Sith or a dark side user, he probably would’ve been long dead before he died in canon. Or he would’ve looked twice his age and been ridiculously deformed

It is only natural, that our muscles are not as strong as they were when we were young. Sith are no different. Neither are Jedi. As an senior citizen in "A New Hope" Obi-Wan was nowhere near as powerful, like he was as a younger gentleman. Growing old is a part of life. He was much wiser, however.

This might be obivious to alot people espically people educated within the medical field. But too many negative emeotions can affect once phcyical and mental health. Allowing yourself to feel too many negative emotions, like anger, depression, lonliness etc, can give you heart problems and lower your immunue system, these emotions also affects your brain's ability to produce happiness. Star Wars just takes all of this and make 100 times worse.

Species born near a Dark Side nexus have a much easier time adapting to using the Dark Side.
Mace Windu is kind of the same being born near one himself who has a natural attunement to the Dark Side as well.

I don't know about Sith getting weaker. It's more like they find a potential student and train them until they are stronger than they were.
And then it's time to go..
And if the student isn't showing signs of progress, it's time to get a new one...

This reminds me of the Book the Towers of Sunset where the magic system was more chaos vs order rather then good vs evil. Where chaos caused immediate change but destroyed the user over time while order prevented change and the users lived long lives.

I don't care what my Sith peers and elders would think of my actions. I would treat my followers, troops, subjects, slaves, and droids as actual living beings with a right to (relative) happiness. My compassion for all in my power base would be unquestionable as I'd put my life on the line for those that have served me faithfully.
But such compassion would make me seem weak in the eyes of my cruel brethren of darkness. Only through the total defeat of those that would question my honor and way of living could I uphold my "abnormal" moral standards and still be Sith. But in all honesty I'd be assassinated by jealous rivals or treacherous schemers that see my Sith lifestyle as perverted or weak.
Power. With great power and loyal agents I could prevent such a plot or attempt on my life. But if someone very high in the Sith hierarchy (like Ancient Sith/Dark Council tier) wants me crippled or dead there's very little I could do stop them from seeking me out and ending my existence.
