It's an easy equation. A still learning apprentice kills his master while only 80% trained. The same thing keeps happening resulting in a steady downward trend.
I mean if you compare the beginning and end points of the Rule of Two Palpatine was way more powerful than Bane. That rule was implemented to ensure each generation of Sith was more powerful than the last.
But if they managed to outperform the previous generations skill and techniques by 125+% it would still be an upwards trend. The old Sith we're stronger because they had to fight each other to gain power as well as the Jedi. But they always had to be weary of others who wanted their power and place. Which is why so many Sith wanted immortality. The rule of 2 was better because only the stronger of the 2 would go on but it not as difficult as the old. Expecially since they spent their time hiding and planning.
It's works in theory but it leaves the sith vulnerable ***SPOILERS*** Like in ROS the sith after 8000 years of war and chaos the sith were finally killed off with no one left to know of their existence seeing as how the temples of the ancient sith have been long since robbed of all the knowledge they once held
It's like comparing a experienced soldier to a career martial artist. The soldier will always be battle hardened after every fight, whereas the martial artist would plan and practice his choreography while watching Taebo!!!!
Another problem with the rule of two is that it will work only if the apprentice is playing fair (as if sith would do that) and don't just blow his master up from orbit or something like that, it also assumes that no one would die in accident and that the master would teach his apprentice everything (as if sith would do that)
Honestly I hate Darth Bane and the rule of 2, I feel like it makes everything more boring. The KotOR age and before is waaaaaay better than what happens after, mostly because the Sith are an actual force and not the ones striking from the shadows. I loved the idea of there being a bunch of Jedi and a bunch of Sith and occasionally you would have these big lightsaber battles, you would have the SIth and the Republic vying for power in the galaxy and really it was just far more interesting than the shadow games after the rule of 2. It's not to say that there aren't great stories, the shadowy intrigue has its moments, but I prefer 2 giant powers fighting for control of the Galaxy, not a big bad empire against the underdog rebels who win it in the long run. As far as power? I think the older Sith Lords would destroy the newer ones, despite what George Lucas has said (He's made some terrible decisions let's be honest) Darth Sidious looks weak compared to Sith Lords like Exar Kun or Revan or Ragnos or Vitiate or many many others, even renowned Sith like Bane seem weak by comparison. Hell Darth Nihilus technically could just instantly kill anything that wasn't a wound in the force, sure it's game breaking contrived power, but it's power.
Reading this comment made me realize that the sequel trilogy could have continued not using The First Order but the re-establishment of The Sith Empire instead as Modern Sith decided to disregard Darth Bane's Rule of Two as a way of Self-Preservation of Sith Teachings in case they were wiped out. The new Sith Empire could have begun as Ben Solo/Kylo Ren left Luke's New Jedi Order due to PTSD (Maybe a battle that caused a lot of deaths of his fellow Jedi) and saw the New Republic incapable of bringing Order to the Galaxy thus leaving the Jedi Order for good.

In a way the Rule of Two sith where the most vulnerable. Let say some accident or enemy of the new sith master, managed to kill him or her before he/she could take any apprentices. Well that´s it then, the entire Stih order dies with him/her and so does most of the dark side skills learned through the ages. Here´s the thing though with the sith order of the old republic. Being alive during the Golden Age of the Sith where the practice of Sith Alchemy was at it's apex would've been very interesting no doubt, but then again, Sidious had amassed much if not most of the combined knowledge of the Sith of the past and had mastered Sith Alchemy aswell, using it in the creation of Vader amongst other things, and the Rule of Two had caused both Sidious and Vader to attain a powerlevel very few Sith of the past could've matched, so I would prefer to live in the Sidious/Vader era. On a sidenote, it's a shame Vader never was much interested in the pursuit of Dark Side knowledge as Sidious and Plagueis were and was more focused on destroying the Jedi, getting revenge on Kenobi and overthrowing Sidious to seize control of the Empire, through Sith Alchemy, he could perhaps not only have found a way to restore himself, but also to become more powerful than Sidious, and to become so much more than any Force wielder in the history of the galaxy instead of being reduced to the crippled cyborg that he was.
@Ms Taylor I like Vader as much as anybody else, but him being a cripple is just the truth, although that isn't to say he didn't manage to become a powerhouse regardless. But the loss of his limbs severely diminished his potential in the Force, by about 40% as stated by Lucas himself, and having to rely on electronics and cybernetics to function and even something as fundamental as to breathe can hardly be considered an improvement, not to mention they made him much slower and less agile than he was before and very vulnerable to Force lightning. The only advantage to his cybernetics were his increased physical strength, which he could've gained through other means, like Sith Alchemy for instance, and maybe the pain they caused him, causing him to grow stronger in the Dark Side. Overall his cybernetics were a hindrance and liability more than anything else.
Vader fell to the dark side because of his emotions, he did what he did because of his love of Padme and after her death and the supposed loss of his unborn child, rage and anger consumed him and on reflection he was a more pure dark force user than really any Sith because he wasn't driven by ambition or power just grief, anger, pain and hatred it's also why when he discovered Sidious lied to him and his children were alive turning back to the light inevitable because the dark side had lost it's grip on him and while Vader did terrible things Anakin was still there just supressed and he was still a good person at heart.
Lol, yeah right. Is that why he only ever shoots lightning outta of his hands ??? Palpatine's droids and tech saved Vader's body, not his miniscule amt of alchemy.

The ancient sith knew about power, Thus the Holocrons. The Dark New Age sith knew about strategy and understanding all aspects but also keeping their identity hidden and only showing off their well rounded skills when necessary, Like a Jedi sentinel, Therefore it makes sense why the sith failed and died, because they could never perfect a being that could handle all aspects of power understanding and patience and Keeping balance between their own bodies and surroundings, the darkside is a beast to powerful to tame one might say, it corrupts till there is nothing left That is why the Jedi survive they found balance In the force The sith followed passion but with a clouded vision, They followed Emotion but emotion like we all know is a wild rollercoaster, always changing, Ever hard to control, That’s why Sidious was mad and insane, I rest my case🤓

In my eyes Bain was a failure by decreasing the amount of sith and in the long run making the Sith order weaker. By making the rule of two bain heavily decreased the flexibility and the knowledge of the Sith order and buy so weakening it. And by having the rule of two making the sith order easier to destroy as we have seen. What do you think?
I disagree. By the time of Palpatine, he had mastered generations of sith knowledge. And at the same time all forms of lightsaber combat. The old sith were focused on power and war and they died out because of it. Raw strength doesn't beat the jedi. Tricking them does.
@@samuelbishop3316 Really? The rule of two was focused on ONE thing, amassing power. That was it. It never taught or showed how to maintain that power. His Empire lasted for 20 years. That is it. Ancient Sith ruled over quadrants for hundreds of years to even thousands of years. Creating a culture that was uniquely Sith. Palpatine failed HORRIBLY. He also wasn't stronger than ancient Sith. Lucas has admitted as much even before he sold the rights. Everyone quotes what he said while it was still early on. When TOR the MMO was commercializing and being presented at cons and such, Lucas was there at times. One of his lines he said to people was "You can finally follow int he footsteps of the ancient Sith. Palpatine was the strongest Sith of the last thousand years but his power pales in comparison to what 'you' will face." Lucas also called the game canon btw. The official storyline that wove through the 8 classes and such...yeah all canon (the storylines never contradict each other either). This is what happens when people stop following the canon. Also, don't pick and choose, according to Lucas any novels and such written that refers to any time after The Return of the Jedi are NOT CANON. Those aren't the power levels of the characters, those events never happened. So in these discussions one must treat them as fan fiction. Facts is, Palpy really wasn't that powerful. He was manipulative and insideous and snake like. He wasn't very powerful though...not in the grand scheme of things. If he was powerful he would have ended them himself, but instead he had to worm his way into the senate and get a clone army made that was brainwashed to follow orders like a religion so that when order 66 was issued they would have no malice. With no malice the Jedi would get no combat sense/awareness and instinctively block. He had trouble with Yoda and Mace...all 3 of them put together couldn't hold a candle tot he ancient Jedi or Sith. That is how weak BOTH orders became with time. The Sith weakened themselves (Palpatine had access to knowledge but he didn't master it, he didn't have enough time to master it all, would take multiple lifetimes) while victory itself defeated the Jedi. Peace made them weak.
@@Nempo13 Yeah well you're not wrong. But what I said was still true, Palpatine had mastered generations of sith knowledge, he just used it differently to them. Hence why the first half of the plan went off flawlessly. The problem was as you say in maintaining power. By exerting excessive control over people you always get push back. Every time.
Nice touch in switching Anakin's lightsaber color to red, but I'm pretty sure it was blue throughout that fight. How poignant would it have been, over flowing with so much rage for all that he'd gone through, twisting in the wind throughout his entire life and now, that he was cut loose to do as he wanted, he was getting so much done just for Obi-Wan to show up and stand in his way, his lightsaber crystal bled from the pain of their confrontation and turned red during their fight (and part of Obi-Wan in seclusion on Tatooine was healing it, to pass on to Luke)
But a lot of the Sith in (Knight of) The Old Republic Era were fairly OP for their ranks under Masters and Lord/Darth. A single Sith Marauder under Vitiate's Sith Empire would kill dozens of Jedi in TCW Era temple before getting wrecked by one of the Jedi Council Members...
@@thecrusaderhistorian9820 And yet they died and Palpatine gained near undisputed control of the entire galaxy. The with needed to change if they wanted to win. They needed not just to be strong but also cunning.

The thing is, Sidious did have knowledge of alchemy and sorcery, he just used it less often than the ancient Sith did. That doesn't mean he was less powerful, it just means he was more frugal with his power.

If you really think about it Marka Ragnos chosen sucessor was Vitiate he was hand picked to be the next True Sith Lord and his line of True Sith Lords that survive are Revan/Bane line all the way down to Vader & the Emperor. Most of the other Sith Lord Titles are self given with a some exceptions but their sith line either ended with them or didn't get passed down like Revan did with Bane.

Palpatine is one of the greatest sith lords to have ever lived, he doesn't look like a noob by any stretch of the imagination, arguably the greatest, possibly except for Valkorion
In terms of raw power, i'd say the ancient Sith were by far superior to the likes of Sidious and Vader. When i think of an absurdly powerful Sith Lord, I think of Valkorian. The guy was capable of destroying entire planets on his own. Yes it took time to do so, but he still did it. His more modern opposite; that being Sidious; was powerful sure, as was made evident by his use of Force Storms to destroy a fleet of capital ships and demolish a planet's surface, but he not nearly as strong as Valkorian was at the absolute height of his power; who wiped out all life on Nathema and Ziost, the event corrupting and tearing the Force to shreds in the wake of Valkorian's power. Vader was strong; of that there is no doubt. Even after he was mutilated and burned alive, his connection to the Force and skill with a blade made him a force to be reckoned with. That said, Sith Lords like Darth Revan (Before his return to the Light) or Tulak Hord would have demolished Vader with little to no trouble at all.
@Luis Martinez Unlike Vader Revan actually became a master, lead armies, faced multiple Jedi, Sith, Mandalorians, and saved his woman from dying. Vader has done none of those things and is more of a blunt tool. Revan is the one wielding that tool, if Vader came across Revan then he wouldn't be able to defeat him.
Sidious Forcestorms are nothing special. Every second ancient Sith was able to perform them. Darth Revans or Darth Banes Forcestorms where much bigger than from Sidious, and Sidious was also not powerful enough to control his Forcestorms, I wouldn’t put him on a level with Vitiate 😉

It’s a clear case of what happens when every one is special, so no one is. I find comparing Vader’s powers to the likes of most ancient sith absolutely pointless. One is a magnificent well thought out villain with conflict, flaws, and motives that evolved over time. And that actually had to fit organically into a story. And one is just some bland super villain who’s sole purpose is to be powerful.
Except that your argument is based on the wrong assumption of powerful characters being written badly. I fail to see how Traya, Sion and Nihilus are badly written. They are far superior in character to Vader.

"If you were to face an ancient Sith Lord in combat, you would learn that we are as children playing with toys compared to the prowess of the old masters." - Kriea, KOTOR 2, describing the lightsaber techniques of Tulak Hord
It would also make sense that methodology might be the factor to the "power" differences. I see this because the past sith and jedi were looking into and becoming more intouch with the force through exploring it in new ways. Further on into the timeline learners were only taught small fractions of the force in constricted fashion's. In other words these orders stifled an individual's growth through ridged practices
I feel like that would leave a lot of room for more movies about the past. They should have a saber duelist move at inhuman speeds. A Star Wars movie that goes with an action theme. (Just like how The Mandalorian has an old West vibe.) The entire movie could be Tulak Hord having to fight continuously as he tries to conquer 100 planets. Like a John Wick scenario The end of the movie could show Tulak Hord standing over a field of bodies... so exhausted that he can barely stand. ...and then suddenly a blade is pierced through his back by his apprentice.

So really, the thing with Rey was *not* that surprising. Palpatine could have saved the galaxy a lot of trouble if he had just exercised his self-destructive streak by committing suicide instead. Oh wait, he basically did. *Twice!*
He manages to cheat death by using Essence Transfer to possess a clone body, in the original canon.
@@Nyrufa - But each clone had a progressively shorter lifespan. Even in the Dark Empire comics, Palpatine was searching for another way to survive, since Essence Transfer and clones were not cutting it. Which is something that Darth Plagueis had figured out and which was why he was looking for a means to become immortal within his original body.
Anyway, masters are supposed to keep most secrects to themselves, not sharing it with their sudents to train their inquisitve side and hide away all these most secret info somwhere else to prevent the scenario described above... So ideally if the student kills the master with 90% completed training the remaining 10% he can gain from the hidden bequest/legacy. Key word: Ideally...

"The master is supposed to teach all the skills as the apprentice is ready."
Bane himself decided to not teach Zannah all to enforce her to gain knowledge herself. This was also used as a way to prolong the masters life. Keep secrets, make sure the student knows this, so the student will bear with you for while in hope to gain the last pieces of knowledge out of you in time.
"Even palpatine never learned immortality like his master."
In legends Plageuis never learned true immortality. He knew essence transfer (which Sidious also learned), based alot of future research on this but never had a huge breakthrough...
The biggest pain for Sidious was that his master was a scientist by heart and thus wrote entire lectures about all kinds of experiments. The lessons out of these broguht Plageuis such incomparable knowledge but for Sidious who is more of a pragmastist it was a chore reading through the library of his master which he never finished.
A comparision would be a person trying to know how to build a gun and gets answered by having books about scientific physics, economics (how to best get the parts), forging, balistics, and aiming thrown at them.

Audio us emassed all of the knowledge that was left, but there was much lost to time.
Lol, yeah right. Is that why he only ever shoots lightning outta of his hands ??? Palpatine's droids and tech saved Vader's body, not his miniscule amt of alchemy.

Katrina Heller and he ain’t even the most powerful. His suit limited his power a lot cuz sidious didn’t want him getting too powerful. And he also lost to Luke which is ridiculous.

Katrina Heller He really isn’t. For some reason *cough feminism cough* women always seem to be better than him in some aspects or they even beat him.
I think the ancient ones were more powerful due to the more powerful connection they had with the dark side and the knowledge they possessed . There was a reason that the newer sith always sought out the holocrons, teachings, and lore of the ancients.
If I was a sith I would want to be ancient Sith.
on an unrelated note. I like the color swap you did making Anakin's sabre red. Even though it's not canon...having two different colored sabres makes the fight easier to follow.

Of course there is a definitive "no". Traya was a master of Revan, one of the the greatest Force and lightsaber wielders in history, and she still chose to say that the ancient masters were beyond compare. As the video pointed out, Vitiate was from this Golden Age of the Sith, and he easily manhandled Revan.
The ancient sith knew about power, Thus the Holocrons. The Dark New Age sith knew about strategy and understanding all aspects but also keeping their identity hidden and only showing off their well rounded skills when necessary, Like a Jedi sentinel, Therefore it makes sense why the sith failed and died, because they could never perfect a being that could handle all aspects of power understanding and patience and Keeping balance between their own bodies and surroundings, the darkside is a beast to powerful to tame one might say, it corrupts till there is nothing left That is why the Jedi survive they found balance In the force The sith followed passion but with a clouded vision, They followed Emotion but emotion like we all know is a wild rollercoaster, always changing, Ever hard to control, That’s why Sidious was mad and insane, I rest my case🤓
...balance in the force is when dark and light are combined...
That’s wha Raven was the strongest power user ever
Tulak Hord is one of the most underrated Sith Lords

I really hope we get a canon counter part of Tales of The Jedi.
Personally I like the Old Sith more but I would not want to be one, or a Rule of Two Sith either. I also would not like to be a Jedi either but if I was a Force-sensitive I would rather try to live a regular as much as possible even if I would likely fail.
Every time.
Please keep up the amazing work and giving us great content like this. I look forward to seeing what you produce for us next!
It's an interesting question to ask though, would it be better to only have two extremely powerful sith, or an entire order of far weaker ones?
But a lot of the Sith in (Knight of) The Old Republic Era were fairly OP for their ranks under Masters and Lord/Darth. A single Sith Marauder under Vitiate's Sith Empire would kill dozens of Jedi in TCW Era temple before getting wrecked by one of the Jedi Council Members...
The old sith weren't weak. Many of them will eat the modern sith for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
@@thecrusaderhistorian9820 And yet they died and Palpatine gained near undisputed control of the entire galaxy. The with needed to change if they wanted to win. They needed not just to be strong but also cunning.
@@samuelbishop3316 They were both strong and cunning. The jedi just had a spine back then.
Well Darth Nihilus could essentially absorb an entire planet and it’s people to invigorate himself and Darth Sion was filled with so much hate and rage that he refused to die multiple times. To me if there was a “Dragon Ball” like scouter / power scale it would most likely break the machine or report a “DO NOT ENGAGE, THREAT IMMINENT” warning to stay far away from those 2 specifically.

The thing is, Sidious did have knowledge of alchemy and sorcery, he just used it less often than the ancient Sith did. That doesn't mean he was less powerful, it just means he was more frugal with his power.
All I'm saying is Palpatine in legends is definitely in at the very, very least top 5 of all sith lords. I mean the guy would literally tear holes in the fabric of space and destroy entire fleets (I think planets too, but I'm not 100% sure) just saying

Answer: Because the modern Sith *are* noobs compared to the ancient Sith.

What I love about this channel is that you don't begin by saying "in this video expose"
They are more powerful because legends is a good example of what happens when you let creativity absolutely run wild with no grounding or discipline.
Every other character is super powerful to the point of lunacy. So many of them have some “world shattering” power. Or are immortal.
Sam Hagar vitiate and many other ancient sith are way cooler, have great stories, and aren’t powerful just to be powerful.
This. Absolutely this.
Except that your argument is based on the wrong assumption of powerful characters being written badly. I fail to see how Traya, Sion and Nihilus are badly written. They are far superior in character to Vader.
