I turn 30 in less than 24 hours, and it feels like just yesterday I was playing this game as a toddler, with no cares in the world, and proudly telling my mom at dinner how I beat this or that level. The time goes by way too fast. Make sure to spend time with the people you love and cut out the folks who only make your life more difficult than it has to be. Don't ever forget the past, but make sure not to dwell on it, don't fret the small stuff, and stop being so damn hard on yourself.

My brother (4 years older than I) and I used to play this so much back in the day. I also turned 30 this year too. He's gone now, but I've since downloaded this song and sometimes I like to stare up at the stars with this playing thinking his spirit is still out there amongst the Cosmos, waiting for me and everyone else he knew here on Earth to reunite in whatever the heck it is beyond this life.

This song...star fox in general reminds me of my dad. He had this on the 64 when he was younger, when I was like 3 I remember playing star fox 64 with him early in the morning. For a few years i forgot about star fox until I saw the old 3ds commercial with footage of starfox 64 3d, I was like 8 or 9 years old, on Christmas i got the original 3ds with a copy of star fox 64 3d, I played the hell out of that game. In 2015 my dad passed away and one week later I decided to replay star fox 64 3d, I beat andross again and when I heard James mccloud say "never give up my son" I broke down In tears. In a way my dad is my James mccloud . Out of any fictional character I relate mostly to fox. Its kinda funny though my little sister tells me i act like fox, I never noticed it until she pointed it out. I'm 16 now, and star fox will always be my favorite game and will always have a speacil place in my heart.
~"This is Fox, returning to base"~
Edit: Hey guys! Sorry if this made any if you feel down or anything like that. I just kinda needed to let this out at the time. thank you all!

This song is so incredibly cruel. It reminds you of the simplest times, and reminds many of us of times with family and friends we can never have again. It's like those memories are stuck in the space that this piece paints a picture of. It's powerful and beautiful but it also makes me so fucking sad. Yet here I sat, listening to it for an extended period of time. It's like it's all I could do to go back... I think, for me, it may be the greatest video game composition of all time... and space

It's amazing what simple things like a video-game's soundtrack can do to you and how much impact it has. We didn't think about it back then but now that we've grown older, it means so much more than it did. You might be doing something that seems insignificant to you right now but maybe, in a couple of years, you'll look back on it and miss those days. Cherish the present, friends.

Shrek The Master Baiter I never was able to play the original as a newer generation of gaming, however that doesn't mean I still appreciate this game for what it is, as even though I never had the actual N64 experience, the fantastic remaster that was the 3DS edition helped me to find out what was loved about the game. The music was recomposed and boy does it sound beautiful. The voice acting is still hilariously cheesy (except recorded for higher quality cheese) and the gameplay is awesome. Some levels that looked sorta dull due to limitations of the N64 (for me at least) looked more lively. Solar and Aquas never looked so good with the age and charm of the N64, and the newer, higher tech but faithfulness of the 3DS. Honestly it's such a good game even though I never even played it in 1997

I completely understand. Right now, I feel like I would do anything to go back to 2014. I miss those days when I was care free, because when you reach your teenage years, life starts to get hard and you start feeling like nothing makes you as happy as those days. But maybe, in 2014, when you still cared about, take for example, The old minecraft (when it wasn’t ruined), And other games that I loved back then, sitting in my living room on a December evening beside the Christmas tree with the snow falling gently outside, I was probably thinking about 2012, and how I loved my Nintendo wii, and late summer nights outside with my friends when it was still bright at nights. But it’s for real this time. *i am* trying very hard to cherish the present, but it just feels like it won’t be as good as those old days. I know you probably don’t understand what I mean, as it’s a very personal thing to me, but damn does that feel good to get out...

My older brother and I were fascinated with breaking our "total hits" record. We were determined to break 1500... the record screen was splashed with our initials "SJM" - a combination of both our names. He moved away before breaking 1500 though. I continued playing by myself, and eventually broke it. I was so excited! It felt like an accomplishment. Then, it struck me, as I entered my own initials and saw all the other SJMs records before it.
I stayed on that screen for a good half hour, just wondering where to go from there. It's probably at that moment that I realized that my childhood was done, we were growing up. He left for the big city... and I was just a few years behind.
This music symbolizes the end of my childhood.

I was 6 years old when this game came out. Among all the N64 games my older brother and I played constantly, this one was one of my favorites. My brother was really good so he always had the #1 high score so I played over and over trying to beat it. Years went by and I still hadn't beaten his score, came close a few times, but couldn't quite get there. The rankings always showed him at #1 and all the rest were my attempts. Then one day over a decade and a half later, I finally beat his score! I was so excited, I smiled as I entered my initials, and immediately had a wave of sadness come over me. Seeing his initials at the #2 spot didn't feel good at all like I thought it would. It's like the game was officially over for me, along with my childhood. That almost life-long challenge was over. I sent him a picture of the ranking list and he, who was well into his adult life, moved away and didn't really care too much about video games anymore, just kinda said "Oh, cool. You finally did it, good job." I haven't played the game since but I find myself listening to this song a lot. I don't know how to explain it but all the emotions of me happily playing this game for years and then it finally ending sad for me, those emotions are captured perfectly by this song. Ah well, it all seems like so long ago now. Just a memory that's drifting away into the cosmic abyss, slowly being forgotten, exactly how this song sounds...

@snovotny007 My story is quite the same, but with a few here and goes, my brother moved away really far away like planet distances, along with my dad. We used to have fun with this beating each other constantly until some time later my initials NJS were in every score in the ranking, literally quite sad, broke to tears. Those memories are just like you are describing, they are drifting away , slowly being forgotten.
I still play it sometime to remember, and the new challenger joins, my nephew, he does not even remotely know about why his uncle cries when he stares at the SF64 menu.

I love people still comment on this video, distanced by times varying from a few months apart to a couple years. It makes me smile, and I shall add:
Ya know, people often ask me, "What kind of music do you listen to?" But I never really knew an answer to give them except: Video Game OSTs (A vast majority of N64 tracks I can admit!). Often I was delivered a response, with an unintended smile, that read, "Really? Video Game music?" But I could never truly explain why.
Tonight though, I felt like listening to my 'custom' video game music album on my ol' I-pod and it sorta clicked-- you don't need lyrics to convey emotions, the music alone can do so in such a stupendous manner
    .
I heard the upbeat rhythm of Mario Tennis 2nd Tournament that got me pumped.
Felt the sorrow that comes from the Song of Healing from Majora's Mask.
Or how about the joy you feel from the End Credits theme of Super Mario 64?
And the playlist ended with this song, and it accomplished the same goal as always: Drifting off into space of thoughts...
Yeh, different feelings for different folks, but isn't that kind of the beauty of it? Anyway, that's enough of one random TH-camr's ramble, happy listening to ya!

This is the kind of music that you'd imagine plays when you have become old, retired, and you start to contemplate about what you have done in life and what you have achieved.
Now I'm 28 and I still have my N64 and Lylat Wars 64 (as this is known as in Europe, I always liked the European name better) in perfect condition. The old consoles can last decades, modern consoles are full of so much unnecessary stuff and dies within 5 years maximum. In fact I'm going to play this today. :) I have so many fond memories of playing this back in the days. When we were kids, we used to be happy when a new console with better graphics came out. I'm not saying the old are bad because we have stronger consoles today (the old consoles are actually better, in my honest opinion, and cannot be defeated). But we used to think things will get better, but as we grow and reach a certain age, we realise the more realistic graphics becomes, the less it becomes an "actual" gaming console. The more realistic it gets, the more of its charm it loses. That's why I say old will always be gold. :) And in my honest opinion, things were much better back in the days when we didn't have online games. Games don't need online support to be good. Back in the days we would actually gather a group of friends and play 4-player and physically interact with each other, having a good time being social together. Today people interact with each other online and there's nothing social about it as we can't see each other's funny reactions right next to each other.
This music stands the test of time, it's pure timeless. And I wish more pianists would play this and upload it here. There's a few that have done it, and they all have their own beautiful interpretation of it. But compared to other Nintendo songs, this isn't very popular among video game pianists, sadly. Maybe I'll one day contribute to this song, but not before I become a better pianist. This sounds easy to learn/make your own interpretation by ear as it's very-slow paced, repetitive and thus not much going on. But I have yet so much to learn, so for now now my goal won't be to learn the songs I actually want to learn. But I'll get there eventually, my teacher thinks I am musical. :)

Øyvind S. Karlsen While it's cool doing 4 player local, Online is a necessary component for games with great Multiplayer. However local felt more fun as you would be with your best buddies together on the same screen. Online you can't see each other or chat with each other vocally (mostly) or see each other unless you are #PCMASTERRACE where you can use Teamspeak, Discord, Skype to see each other or the game's provided chat and mic features. In local you could be bunched up on the screen having a blast, or be in different rooms with a Nintendo DS for local wireless.

I have more or less that sensation but it's kinda like a music that plays after the end of something dramatic. It ecoes through my mind "now you can rest easy.". I however have a completely different opinion. I think that it is only natural that kids crave new things and this will NEVER change, it is in the very nature of young humans to be like that and old people will always prefer old things, it's a law of nature pretty much. In our childhoods we lived through an era of fast development, we witnessed games going from 2D to 3D, really massive advancements, the N64 is a very different console in comparison with the SNES and this is thanks to the massive technological advancements that were happening at the time and when the Playstation and N64 came out they were incredible, they shifted paradigms to what we still use nowadays...
And you talk about realism taking out the magic but seriously nowadays realism is only a matter of choice, games can still not be realistic, they can be anything, the hardware does not dictate what a game looks like, the hardware is just a limiting factor in terms of time, more processing power means more time to put more things on the screen, basically that. And with more things we can make more realistic games yes but not necessarily, I'm not sure if you understand this. And yes the more realistic a game is, the closer it gets to a simulation, it starts to transcend the concept of what a game is, you are right about that.
This is exactly why VR is not really considered a videogame, it's actually a general purpose medium that can be used for all sorts of things, in a near future even work tasks will be performed in VR but right now it's limited to gaming because the specs of current HMDs are not good enough for display virtualization which is necessary to build a VR workspace. But yeah putting VR aside... What I'm getting into is that hardware is only a limiting factor, it's not something that tells exactly what a game is supposed to be.
The reason why modern games are on a realism trend has to do with social aspects, not hardware. If you go around asking what people want, they'll explain that they want more realistic experiences such as Kingdom Come Deliverance and Battlefield 1. Those games were made because there is a demand for them... Kingdom Come is a more realistic middle age game which has no magic, no powers, no dragons and etc, it's a "Low fantasy" game, in other words a very realistic game that has a fictional story but it's otherwise faithful to historical facts, in other words... It's realistic, not just visually but the whole context of the game is realistic and therefore it's almost a simulation of the past.
That's why I agreed that more realism means to transcend what a game is and become a simulation instead of a game. Kingdom Come and Battlefield 1 are both supposed to simulate how things were in the past historically speaking. So not only those are realistic in looks but also the context. And sure maybe we should separate simulations from games so that you get a more clear view that there are still games around. Just keep in mind that the hardware is not something that tells what the game is supposed to be, seriously even nowadays the games can be made however people want but what happens is that the culture changed...
Most people nowadays are into more realistic things.. And I mean realistic not just visually, I mean ACTUALLY realistic, like the story and everything. Kingdom Come is exactly what I mean, it has no magic, no dragons and etc. Battlefield 1 is also a game that is answering the demands of people that wanted more historically accurate games which according to our logic here are not games but simulations of the past. Recreations of past lives sort of speaking... Because there are some games that are only realistic in visuals such as Skyrim or Crysis 3.
Seriously... Skyrim has realistic visuals but the game is full of magic and absurd events, I don't know if because of that you would still consider it a game or not because maybe you only care about the visuals, if the visuals are realistic then automatically it's not a game... But I consider Skyrim a game because the events are not realistic at all even if the visuals are...
For me a simulation is when EVERYTHING is realistic, not just the visuals so yeah Crysis 3 is also a game, not a simulation because even though it has some of the most realistic visuals in a game, the game itself features a very absurd story about a suit that assimilates a man and becomes him and it turns another guy into the previous man and he survives a fall from space and becomes immortal afterwards... It's a really complex shit, really beyond anything that could happen in reality. So yeah for me realistic visuals are not enough for something to be disqualified as a game. But if everything is realistic then yes it gets disqualified and renamed as a Simulation rather than a game. And I mean an actual simulator, not just those meme simulators that only exist to make fun of the concept of simulators.
Perhaps what must be done is a complete separation of games and simulations into two distinct markets. The mess started when many PC gamers migrated to consoles because of the Xbox... But previously simulations were an exclusively PC thing and perhaps it should've stayed that way. Now that the market is a mess people like you appear to blame technological advancements for everything when actually the technology only gave us more options, it never took away the possibility to make games just the way you liked. In fact modern consoles can connect up to 10 controllers instead of just 4 for local multiplayer and with higher resolution TVs, 10 subdivisions would still have enough resolution and size for everybody to play well and to top it all with hardware such as the Nintendo Switch a local LAN multiplayer is possible. Technological advancements actually brought MORE possibilities for local multiplayer as well. The problem isn't the technology. It's Culture, it's the people that prefer to stay at home... The people that prefer convenience over having a good time.

This music reminds me of him as he was a very peaceful man. I’d say cherish the ones around you while you still can. I was not born around this time, nor I am gonna be those kids who say “I grew up with this just like you guys!!”. This was a gift for me from my brother, showing me something I thought I could never experience. Good lord. Talk about a nostalgia bomb.
Much of the N64 music library makes me feel this way; this theme in particular is really touching. About two years after this game was released a series of events happened in my parent's lives, and by extension mine and my siblings lives, that caused disquiet and pain for a decade after. Life overwhelmed us, and by the time I finally found steady ground again, I was an adult, with my own stresses and responsibilities to tend to.
But when I listen to this, it really takes me back to being nine years old, summer light coming through the windows, no worries on the horizon yet. This song is so beautiful that it's practically angelic.

I'm so glad I got to play this game with my dad and brother when I was growing up. It was the only game we ever really played together that me and my dad both enjoyed, and we must have beaten it every way(multiple paths) several times. It was like I lived alone at 15 just me and this game and this music. The ending to this game makes me break out in tears every time. YOU KNOW WHO showing up like an angel to help him escape the Andross's lair after being gone for so long. He says "You've become so strong Fox" just before leaving again forever and I fucking die inside.
I used to beat this game as a kid all the time because James McCloud reminded me of my father and the ending always made me feel like my father is watching me and just around the corner and he's not actually gone. I got through a lot of tough times in school with just "Don't ever give up, my son!" and "Never give up, trust your instincts..."

I discovered this game nearly ten years ago and it completely changed the way i look at video games forever. I was so sad to hear the way it fell into obscurity before i was even born. But nonetheless, this series is something i will cherish and wait patiently for its return. And if Nintendo won't bring it back, I'll do it myself. That is a promise.

Not to mention, any time I happen to boot up the game, you know I have to just sit and wait a couple minutes before actually starting. This, along with the opening narration are some of the most relaxing and soothing pieces of audio I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing, and I know I for one can’t get tired of it 😅🤣

Man, I remember playing this game as a young boy. I'm fairly certain this theme imprinted on me, because when I downloaded Starfox 64 on the wii virtual console, i remember just... staying up late listening to this theme. It's just so incredibly calming in comparison to most other menu themes that I've listened to over the years.
I'm going to be turning 28 soon, about 4 days until my birthday and man... its just crazy how the time has passed. It sucks that you aren't *truly* able to appreciate such moments when you make them, only until you look backward fondly and full of nostalgia that you realize just how much even small things such as this mean to you.
I'm proud that I experienced this gem as a child, grew up the way I did, and where I find myself now. Sure, there have been bumps in the road along the way, but no road is paved perfectly smoothly. Just embrace the process and pay it forward when you can.

There is alot checkpoints on TH-cam, but to the people that comeback to this. This is OUR checkpoint. I'm in my 30s still figuring stuff out and sometimes after a really rough night I comeback here and get reminded that I'm not alone. If there's one thing that starfox taught me it's that you're not alone even if you feel like you are you're truly not. There are people that go through so much and this music is for us: the reminder that sometimes we need no matter what it is.

My sister and I love the Star Fox series, especially this one and on the SNES/Super Famicom. We bonded alot with every Star Fox game growing up. It's really strange how this menu theme really invokes a lot of different emotions from gamers everywhere. You get this sudden nostalgia and at the same time somehow sadness, a strange happiness and an even stranger feeling that the universe is just looking back at you.
I guess maybe fictional outer space reflects a little bit of what we forget and returns it when we see it? I dunno but man this game just speaks good vibes and memories growing up at age 10.

Apart from Zelda OOT's title theme, there's no other VG song that I've listened to as much over the years, nor has affected me thus. The nostalgic factor is unreal. I felt the emotion then, as a boy, and as a man I finally feel the full effect of it.
Like Zelda, Star Fox holds a special place in my heart. It was a huge part of my childhood growing up in the 90s. I was regarded as "Fox" in my circle of friends and still to this day I relate. Much like Fox, I was the flying ace. I remember helping my buddies and younger relatives acquire all the medals and such. We took turns playing, but before every session we'd just chill out at the menu screen for a good ten minutes or so. We played it together again and again, we even role played after school and such. We lived and breathed these characters. Those were good times. Cherish those happy memories and the bonds you've shared. I know I'll treasure them forever.

I remember playing this game a lot in my first couple years of high school. I don't know what it was exactly that compelled me to play this so much. If I had to place a pinpoint somewhere I'd place it at when I was rummaging through the old N64 that was sitting in my brother's room I played a few of the games and Star Fox 64 was one of the ones I played. On the ranking, there was a high score by someone named "DAD" set. My family situation is rather strange so I have no clue who this DAD was but I assumed it was a huge accomplishment considering it was the top of the leaderboard before I started practicing. It didn't take too long before I climbed to like 5th before I felt like I hit a wall. I just felt like I wasn't playing well enough.
One day, during Sophomore year of high school, I sat down and started playing, hoping to beat the record that stood on top. I got the secret Andross fight and everything. I looked at my score and I still remember it to this day: 1026. I not only beat the record, I toppled it by a landslide. It probably is hardly anything compared to ranked players but seeing that I not only best the record but got 4 digits in as well was surreal. I remember the fact I put my last initial wrong too. I got somewhat better scores later on, but nothing topped the fact that I crushed a score that I thought I wasn't good enough to beat.
I've stopped playing Star Fox 64 as much because I've got better things to do, but it is still something I think about on occasion.
I'll probably never figure out who DAD is, because no one else in the family seems to know or care, but I'll always keep one spot on the leaderboard for him to stay.
