I met Vincent Price at a dinner party in Richmond Va. In 1973. A wonderful, friendly, and fascinating man.

Vincent has been in a lot of non-Academy Award winning films due to the nature of the genre that he gravitated towards, but even when the movie was bad, Vincent's performance was always top notch.
I met him at my college back in the mid 70s or so. A total class act. It was a bit creepy when he looked at me me and said, 'Hello, son'. I was like, 'That sounded just like you'. He smiled.

He came to my campus too at about that time- I think he was doing a one man show on Oscar Wilde. One of my regrets from college (in which there were many) was not going to see him. I wouldn't develop an appreciation for Price, or Oscar Wilde for that matter, until years later.

The magnificent Vincent Price was NOT a miscast... Under neither his stoic performance was a sadness to his situation, tempered with a resolve to survive. The scenes with the dog were heartbreaking to watch.... Especially as a kid when I first saw it. I put this in the category of "The Plague Dogs" and 'On The Beach" in that the ending of any version done of this always leaves me cold, but resigned to the fact that everything comes to an end... and not all endings are fair, nice or good.. Like life itself, they simply are.

I've been a fan of Vincent Price since the early 1960s, and I watched "The Last Man on Earth" on TH-cam a few years ago. I thought the mood of the movie was exactly what it should be, and that Vincent Price was just the right actor to sustain that mood. Price's character displayed a sense of single-minded determination to get through each day while bearing a sense of hopelessness. I think that's how I would feel. I didn't see "Omega Man," but "I am Legend," seemed to have no sense of struggle except against the zombies, and even that was just your typical Hollywood situation drama.

He came to college in Cranford, NJ to promote his book on cooking around 1970. I was in high school at the time. I went there and after his speech he asked if anyone had any questions.... being a huge fan, I jumped up and started waving my arms in back of the auditorium and got called on first! Didn't want to miss my one and only chance to ever get to speak with him.

"I Am Legend" is (*and has always been*) one of my favorite horror novels of all-time. I've read this novel
at least 12 times through the course of my life. So, I really do know the story inside & out. With that being
said, let me applaud "The Last Man on Earth" as being the most faithful adaption, of the novel, to date. I
also feel that Vincent Price gave a wonderful performance. (*although it still baffles me as to why they
changed the lead character's name from Robert Neville to Robert "Morgan"??*) The real irony is that the
actor who played Ben Cortman would have been better cast as Robert Neville, being this is more how he
was described in Matheson's original novel. But like I said, even with that detail aside, Vincent Price still
did a wonderful job in the part. (*then again, Vincet Price "always" does a great job in the various roles he
plays*) The budget, on this film, is obviously low. However, it does give it a stark realism ala "Night of the
Living Dead". Aside from that, it's obvious that the director, cast & crew gave their all to give us an enjoyable
film and it shows. Now, looking beyond to the other two versions, there's really no comparison. "The Omega
Man" was so far from Matheson's novel that it's unrecognizable. (*although there's some fun to be had with
watching an obvious stunt double substituting for Heston during the motorcycle scenes*) And I could barely
get into the Will Smith version of "I Am Legend". I hated ("HATED") this version so much that I stopped
watching it after about 30 minutes into it. I had almost wished that someone would have stepped up to
"slap" Will Smith this time. So, at this point I still await a more up to date/ faithful adaption of Richard
Matheson's masterpiece. "Will it ever come to pass"?? At this point, I'm beginning to lose faith. But we
can always hope. Anyway, excellent review and facts. Thank you for an excellent presentation.

    • @bobchurch6175
      @bobchurch6175 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I suspect that they changed his name simply because of how much better having his previous friend saying "Morgan" rather than "Neville" sounded.

i've read the book only once, so it is gratifying to hear confirmed the superiority of the vincent price version from a solid expert on the subject.
latverian, i must admit i'm a bit shocked at your strong antipathy to the will smith version; while my impression is that it departs quite a bit from the book, yet it seems to me to be a spectacular movie in it's own right, leaving the book aside as simply a different story.
i'm delighted to hear a richard matheson expert preferring the vincent price original, successfully resisting the seductive superior production value of the glossy, slicked out will smith version. but i can't help wondering what was so objectionable about the newest version; i loved a lot of what it did; i was sadly disappointed it didn't do more things i was hoping for, especially since it was actually called 'i am legend'. the scene where this title is alluded to in the vincent price original i find so electrifying and evocative; i thought it was totally transcendant; it is the moment where 'last man on earth' becomes immortal to me.
i could hold forth on the vincent price original for an hour: the three year earthly mission, where this legendary man, the only man who can walk in light, searches out his corrupted inhuman enemies wherever they hide, the gehenna like ever burning pit where he consigns all the damned he has judged unfit to live, and the choice to sacrifice this legendary last man on the altar of a catholic church with a lance piercing his side as the blood serum that will save his sub human enemies pours out of his pierced heart, like the saviour himself, this is glorious writing for this first version of this amazing story idea.
yet there are many scenes in the movie 'i am legend' that i found spectacular: where will smith is hell bent on rescuing his dog, the scene where the infected dogs are trying to pass through the sunlight barrier, the scene where will smith is forced to kill his dog, the scenes in the video store. among others. the whole conceit commenting on the gulf war and the illusion of control as a liet motif; even though i resented the political virtue signalling, yet i appreciated the attempt at thematic sophistication. i wish you would hold forth a bit and explain the faults of the will smith movie at more length.

I got a DVD copy of this at a Dollar Store years ago...it also had House on Haunted Hill on the disc. I expected a corn ball movie...Instead what I saw was a fantastic, arguably the best version of "I Am Legend" made. Vincent Price gives the most believable performance of actors who have played this role and one of Vincent Price's best dramatic performances.. ( the one with Mr. Smith was the worst) The filming is somewhere between Italian Neorealism and French New Wave. The flashback scene is especially affecting. Great Movie!

As someone who had read the book and seen the Will Smith version, a few years ago I watched all 3 movies back to back to see how they compared. I expected The Omega Man to be the best as it's the one everyone talks about but it is little more than an action movie and so different from the original premise. This one with Price is definitely my favourite. It had a creepy twilight zone vibe and was the most faithful to what the book was trying to say.

Unlike the later two films, Richard Matheson wrote the screenplay for this movie but was so dissatisfied with the end product, he withheld his name. He was not a fan of any of the movies feeling they did not capture the essence of his story. Of the three, "The Last Man on Earth" was by far the closest to the original story.

All the films that have ever been made & this & "Chain Reaction" are the only movies that I know of that have a lathe in them. What's significant about that is that our modern world is based on the lathe; everything we have came from a lathe. Machines: made by a lathe or its' daughter machines that followed. I have two lathes. Hey, if one is good, two is better, right!? Ha.

This was based on a short novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson and has been remade as "The Omega Man" with Charlton Heston in 1971 and "I Am Legend" with Will Smith in 2007. The Vincent Price version is probably closer to the source material as the following films were predicated on man made viruses or biological warfare. And frankly, Price is a better actor.

Vincent Price reminds one that character actors can be golden in the right role. There is a lot of acting talent today, but we collectively seem to be missing those spot on character actors able to take over a role.

If I’m remembering correctly the exteriors featured in this production were all filmed in Italy. I’ve seen this exceptional, thought provoking starring vehicle of Price’s several times over my lifetime, and have always found it impressive. Price has always been magnificent in any role he assailed - even in at the beginnings of his acting career in the motion picture Laura with Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney.

Excellent coverage of a great film, Rick. (as usual, I might add) I read the book. Saw this film and was impressed at how well it tracked the original novel. To be clear, I LOVE The Omega Man. But, consider it a completely different movie. Barely based on the novel, I am Legend. The Will Smith film was garbage compared to the book, and brilliant on its own merits. You can not take a story written in a particular time period, with the sensibilities of that time, and successfully translate into the modern perspective. It will turn to garbage. "The past is a foreign land. To understand it, you MUST learn its customs." The latter quote is attributed to Andrew Klavan.
If you are a Vincent Price fan, as am I, you NEED to see, "Champaign for Cesar", a comedy starring Ronald Colman, Art Linkletter (as a bad guy!) and Vincent Price as an insane capitalist owner of a Soap company that sponsors a silly game show. Colman is a professor who despise broadcast television for its promotion of literal stupidity as a product. To get revenge, he goes on the game show to take down Price's commercial empire. I recommend this film for two reasons. Price is a comedy genius!!! Who knew? Right? And for Colman's wonderful speaking. A delight.
More reading suggestions: "Earth Abides". Movies: "The World, The Flesh and The Devil". These are two of the earliest "end of the world" stories and they are both awesomely excellent.
    Happy Halloween everyone.

Vincent Price was a great actor who was much more than just an actor in horror movies. He started out as a character actor in a variety of genres from comedy to film noir to historical drama.
My favorite film is Roger Gorman's "The Masque of the Red Death".
I saw "The Omega Man" long before I was aware of this movie.
Heston had worked with Price in "The 10 Commandments". I think his comments about this movie are sincere and said because of his respect for Price. But he was wrong. Price was fine in this one.

SPOILER ALERTS FOR BOTH NOVEL & FILMS
In my opinion, I AM LEGEND, is in the top 3 vampire novels ever written. It's in my top 10 best horror novels of all time.
The difference between the book & this & all adaptations is that Neville(Morgan, Price, Heston, Smith) doesn't die a hero or become one. He die's realizing that in this new world, inhabited entirely by vampires, He is now the monster!
He hunts & kill them while they are sleeping & vulnerable.
He will be the one, who's stories will be told to frighten the children for future generations.
    He became A LEGEND!
Can you imagine how a vampire(If they were real) would feel after reading Dracula? This is where this book puts you in a sense.

Vincent Price was a very diverse actor and was a mesmerizing character to watch on screen. I love all of his horror and sci-fi roles, but I became a fan after watching some of his older roles in movies such as Song of Bernadette, Laura, Leave Her to Heaven, and Dragonwyck. I'm a huge fan of his Abominable Dr. Phibes movies, the horror rap he did on Michael Jackson's song "Thriller" and even his small role on Edward Scissorshands. RIP Vincent. 🙏🏼

Great film with wonderful atmosphere. I first seen it when I was a kid, late night in my room when I should have been sleeping as was often the case. Now I was watching on a tiny 14 inch B&W GE portable television which was just fine being an old B&W movie anyways I was not aware of the difference, watching in the dark not really sure what I was in for. Needless to say I really enjoyed it and it left a lifelong impression on me. Vincent Price was just a class act and a master in the Horror and macabre genre.

Good review. I saw this on late night TV back in the 1970s and it reminded me so much of The Carnival of Souls and Night of the Living Dead. I prefer it over The Omega Man and definitely over the Will Smith version. This is where a low budget works in favor of a film instead of against it. Great acting and stark black and white photography add to the mood and atmosphere. ***1/2
