    I love where Dracula has Lou Costello’s character in a trance and the monster gasp in fear when suddenly sees Lou. That’s when Bela Lugosi uttered the iconic phrase that he would be associated with…”Don’t be afraid”, to the monster.😅

    The remark about the sweat under the rubber appliances reminded me of how Fred Gwynne had the same issue with playing Herman Munster. He used to drink gallons of water to replenish what his body lost while shooting in full costume and makeup!

      @Blake Pace
      The narrator of this videoclip review of the film, "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein"(1948) initially fails to specify that Lugosi only played Dracula twice in films - but he also failed to mention that Lugosi also played Dracula innumerable times on stage - not only on Broadway but also in touring productions of the Deane-Balderston version of Bram Stoker's novel. He also fails to mention the more commonly accepted story that it was because of Lou Costello's insistence that Lugosi be hired to play Dracula in the film, that is the reason why Universal International put Lugosi in the film as Dracula.

    Great info, once again! Here’s a little anecdote for all of you: Now, where I live, we can see American movies the very same day they are issued in the U.S.A. but when I was a kid, in the 60’s, we had to wait several weeks and sometimes even months. Oddly enough, that particular film was shown in my hometown when I was 10… in 1964! I suppose it was originally shown In 1948 but why was it relaunched 16 years later? Was that “revival” done across North America or was it a local thing only? Anyone knows?

    From what I've read previously, Karloff said he would not play the monster again after Son of Frankenstein (1939) his third outing. So that decision was made by him almost 10 years prior to A&B Meet Frankenstein. Also, Lugosi played Dracula on stage for quite some time - that may have lead his agent to more successfully promote him for the first screen version.

    • @johnd8788
      @johnd8788 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not the reason why Karloff didn't want to play the monster in this film. He didn't like the idea of comedy and the monster and making fun of the monsters.

    WOW!!! Just wow. Love this film. I knew it, but I was glad to hear somebody else remind people that Bella Lugosi only played Dracula twice and this was the second time. Love this, Rick, the research you do and facts you come up with boggle my mind. I thought it was already full of the trivial trivialities that existed. Not so! Keep it up, brother, and be hopeful.

    I wonder which daughter Lou though could write a script.
    I saw an interview with Boris' daughter where she was asked if he regretted not being in the movie "Arsenic and Old Lace". She said he only did when his nephew (or great nephew I forget the exact relation) asked why he was not in the movie , then she said the nephew had also asked about why he was not in this movie and her father had done the first A&C movie for that nephew and brought him to set to meet A&C.

    Abbott and Costello were on a downward swing in their careers at the time this movie was made. This movie put them back in the public eye, and was a great swan song to the Universal monsters of the golden age. It's easy to see why, as the monsters are all in character the whole movie and it still ends up being hilarious. Which is more than I can say for Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy, which was a chore to sit through when I was 10 and no better now.

    In a "making of", there's an out take I saw of Bela Lugosi giving Bud and Lou a telling off for laughing. Among other moments of corpsing, of which, there's quite a lot. As you'd expect.

    This was always one of my favorite Abbott and Costello movies. I grew up watching the original Frankenstein, Wolfman and Dracula movies. You mentioned some great Trivia I never new about which only adds to my enjoyment now when I watch the movie. There's just one small detail or should I say " monster" that you left out. The very last scene in the rowboat they have an invisible passenger voiced by Vincent Price. Thanks for this post and great trivia.

    My wife and I JUST saw this movie just this Sunday at our local movie theater! Yes, on the big screen! Georgia Theater Company runs what they call Flashback Cinema every Sunday and Wednesday nights, and this movie is showing this week! It will run again in the state tomorrow night, for anyone that sees this and can make it. It was so worth it to see it on the big screen! And it is twice as funny! Some of the expressions on Lou's face are hysterical, and the monsters look awesome on the large screen! Lugosi rocked and both Glenn Strange and JCjr were awesome to see larger than life! Great vid and awesome movie! See it on the big screen if you can! BTW, I love the spinning stone door bit when Wilbur (Lou) keeps going around and seeing the monsters and Chick doesn't believe him yet! Awesome comedy!

    5: 30 You missed a movie, Rick. The Monster Squad 1987 had Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy, Gillman, and, my favorite, Scary German Guy. :D

    This was my fave movie with Abbott and Costello when l was a little girl in the early sixties. This made me think of something that happened with my great grandmother. She loved Lou, of course because he was Italian like us, and she watched everything he did. She was heartbroken when he died. A few years after he passed, she saw him in a movie on TV. She started yelling for my father. (She only spoke Italian) but she wanted to know how Lou made a movie when he was dead??? I remember my father laughed his butt off. She was so cute. She was an old lady in the 60's. Thanks for the memory. I miss you, Grandma! ♥️♥️

    Glenn Strange was a regular on Gunsmoke for many years, playing Sam, the Long Branch bartender, at least during the color years. (During the 30-minute B&W era, Sam was played by several actors.) By all accounts, Glenn Strange was a kind, wonderful man.
