- The World's Most Expensive Dog: The Chinese Tibetan Mastiff is the larger cousin to the ancient Tibetan Mastiff - Bred to look like a Lion and said to possess real Lion's blood. Some dogs have been reportedly sold for in excess of 1 - 2 million dollars in China, are thought to be wolf killers, ferocious defenders of people's property....but is all of this really true, or are they just lovely house hold pets? Animal Watch's Anneka visits 2 huge Tibetan Mastiffs in the UK and explains the truth about this breed.

I had a neighbor who had a giant black Tibetan mastiff, named Believer. This dog was seriously huge, I don’t think she would fit in the back of a BMW 5 series, and I’m dead serious. To this day I’ve never seen another dog as big as she was. She was incredibly sweet & very faithful. We had a pool and if you went swimming and acted like you were having trouble staying afloat, she’d jump in and swim to you in an attempt for you to grab onto her, and if you did, she would swim you back to safety. Sometimes I wouldn’t hold onto her and she would go underwater and try to swim up to an angle where I would end up on her back, and then swim to safety. Really an incredible breed, and if I ever purchase a house, I would like to buy one.

How about the world's cheapest dog? You know, the one roaming around in the street or at the local pound! He/she needs a forever home too. Also, even the most "well-intentioned" breeder offers no choice over reproduction. A female dog should have reproductive rights and I'm amazed this doesn't resonate with the ladies who are for dog breeding and puppy mills. Let's move forward at warp speed!

It shows that humans still view animals as some type of commodity or symbol, and not a living, breathing "Creature" (my friend's English Bulldog's name). Well, many pets people own are all specially bred nowadays and since it's not normal, they're bound to have issues. Pomeranians were bred to be tiny so they can be cute house pet. Scottish folds are considered cute because of their ears so they bred them that way, but that will lead to major pain and issues for these cats later on in life. If no one cares about how their pet looks, then we wouldn't have breeders around to breed them to public demands.

Sooo, they need a facelift multiple times in order to see? People see this as normal and expected? These poor animals.
It's such a shame that some people pick their dog just by how they look, they might not even have a clue about the health issues of certain breeds. But what I think is worse, is that some people buy these sick dogs even when they know that the dogs will most likely suffer.
I mean I am assuming that you have a similar issue to pugs- they probably weren't bred like that originally, then people wanted a certain look and didn't think about the health issues like with pugs- pugs were originally looking normal, then people wanted to shorten their snouts and now you have cute dogs with a ton of health problems.

When he was a child in Tibet, my dad had a Mastiff. He said the breed itself was usually healthy and not as large as the ones in this video. You're right, the Mastiff has been bred to be larger in order to sell the whole "aggressive, lion-like guardian" but the one my dad had was a friendly dog that was only aggressive when it sensed wolves getting close to the village/town and the sheep that my dad used to walk. My dad said the barking would echo across the valley, seemingly jumping from hill to hill. Its an amazing visual to think of !

@@lx051225 Yes, that's correct. Tibetan Mastiffs are not bred to be carried in purses. In the nomadic lifestyle of the Tibetan people, Tibetan Mastiffs were used for home security and to protect the livestock. Generations of picking out the aggressive pup in the litter has resulted in a dog that will ferociously attack any stranger not considered family.

This breed belongs in the mountains. Originally, the Tibetan Mastiffs were the companions of nomads and shepherds in the Himalayan mountains. They used to protect the sheep herd and their masters. The massive fur-coat was an evolutionarily trait that helped them survive the extreme cold at those high altitudes. when their descendants spread to Europe, they lost those fur coats gradually and resulted in modern day Mastiffs and Boxer breeds because of the warmer climate.
Now you're breeding them to be more furry and big to look like "lions" and selling them worldwide?

Yes, they are massive as the breed mastiff. But ,don't know about having g lion blood as I read in the comments. No, their not lion related. If you'd notice their fur ,especially around face. Is made to look like a lion. As many animals are trimmed cut styled primed an proper to look like the face and body of a lion.Ive seen many pictures and the dog groomers do a darn good job. To have them from a before and after picture of their new look....Who Knew, right. Lol !!
I m from Himalayan region. My mother told me she had one Tibetan mastiff during her childhood. She was very faithful and a true helper. She used to look after the herds of sheep while in the wild. But sadly she was killed and fed by Himalayan tiger. My mom cried a lot. Till now she never tame any dog bcoz this remind her of her dead pet.

Their range has decreased to about 10% of their original habitat.

I have a Chinese shar-pei. They need eye surgery as well. It isn't too invasive if that's what you think. Since shar-peis have so many wrinkles, this can push their eyelashes in their eyes causing eye goop and problems seeing. So you are helping them. No harm is caused.

Just imagine breaking into his house and seeing two giant guard dogs.
We are quite happy with our Rough collies (Lassie dogs) Less than half the weight of these Tibetan/Chinese dogs, but still a very big coat. Our first one, now seven years old, cost by comparison, a measly €1000 within Slovenia and the second one five years later, his half brother, €1200. The breeder lives in Slovenia where we do now. She sells to other countries but the price is anther €1000 to cover all the paper work, vet check fees and delivery. The brother of our first dog went to Australia and one from the litter of our second dog went to new owners in South Africa. The lady breeds for health and temperament plus they do also win top prizes in dog shows. We are not bothered with all that, we just wanted good healthy, reliable approved dogs with good safe character which has turned out to be correct. We have had rescued dogs whilst in the UK of which some have been good but others have been a disaster, it is a bit of a lottery. With a bit of training our dogs could still herd sheep, our vet here calls them Scottish sheep dogs. They are much larger than Border Collies but ours have almost an identical coat colour and pattern to their smaller cousins.

My neighbour got one just last month. At 2 months old, he weighs at 8 kg, just 1kg heavier than my Bichon. 4-5 weeks later, he doubled the size of my Bichon at 16 kg. 😄
He's very sweet, always greeting me with slobbered kisses. I can't wait for him to get to his maximum weight.

Couple of years ago I went back to my country Ethiopia and saw this exact same dog whenever we went to go visit my aunt it always was there in the same spot it had these light patches of hair on top of it’s eyes and at first we thought that those were it’s eyes but later realized it wasn’t I still to this day don’t know why it was always in that one spot or who it’s owner was I just know it was so beautiful the way it laythere minding it’s own business quite intimidating but intriguing with its full and thick dark black fur and its blonde streaks of hair really gorgeous

Tony Wang Thats great I’m glad that your dogs are well breed and healthy. What I’m saying is that China has breed the Tibetan mastiff so that it’s features are exaggerated such as it’s size, its overly thick fur the amount of extra skin, they’ve breed these feature for aesthetic purposes because it will make them a lot of money, it doesn’t benefit the dog in anyway to be this large and have trouble breathing and having to have operations on its eye lids because there is to much lose skin (in this dogs case anyway) it’s for aesthetic purposes. It’s the same as the problem that the English bulldog has. The original Tibetan mastiff is a relatively healthy breed and was breed to be so because it was breed to have a specific job to do that’s why it has the feature that it does but China has just bred them to a point that they are unhealthy for the aesthetic, shock factor and money. It’s mildly disgusting. You should breed for the health and well-being on the breed and strive to breed the healthiest dogs you can not for aesthetics and money.

These dogs look like show dogs. Their features look like they have been exagerated. Their cordination also looks off.
Tibetan mastiffs are not social, and very aggressive. They are very protective to its owner, and likely attack strangers.

Most viscous dogs are Dalmatians, poodles and Chihuahuas...only difference is those dogs are much smaller than the mastiff so they do less damage
Finally a fairly accurate news report on some of the difference between True Tibetan Mastiffs and the Chinese Mastiff (AKA Chinese Tibetan Mastiff). Note the differences that are mentioned. The CM own interviewed made it clear that the CM breed is not capable of performing as a flock guardian and he makes note that he must limit their activity because they are very large and will hurt themselves because of the strain on their joints. It is also noted that they could not survive as a working dog in Tibet. It is also mentioned that they are to slow and uncoordinated to be wolf killers one of the major jobs of TMs in Tibet. The health and life span of the CMs are poor compared TMs. This is not directly stated in the video but it is a fact that they have life spans about 60% shorter than TMs and many health issues. It is also stated that these CMs have their esteres once a year in the spring. The majority of TMs have their once a year esteres in late September-November time frame. The narrator used the excuse that the CMs have their esteres in the Spring to allow the pups to develop before the cold Tibetan winters. Guess true TMs are genetically prepared for the harsh winters in their homeland. The spring esteres of CMs is most likely due to the fact that are the result of cross breading with other types of dogs. This genetic trait is further proof that CMs are a new mixed breed being developed by the Chinese and should be called what they are Chinese Mastiffs. I have to ask why would anyone have the name Tibet associated with an animal that could not survive in Tibet except to destroy a culture and for marketing CMs based upon the superior characteristics of TMs? The problem TM owner and breeders have with CM breeders is strictly related to their attempt to leverage the characteristics of a true TMs for marketing and political reasons. Yes CMs are big furry dogs but one has to question was it worth developing an animal with so many health issues just to generate a market to sell an animal. Please not that your lead statement " be able to defend against wolves and guard with great ferocity " are not true of the CMs. I am sure they would guard with great ferocity but I think the quicker and more mobile TM would do a much better job.

Ever since China invaded Tibet in the 50s they have been carrying out a war to destroy the Tibetan culture. First they tried to kill off TMs then they found that they could make money by creating a Chinese mascot. The Chinese are filling the market demand they created. Now it is not just the Chinese. There are two types breeders those in it to make money and those who are in it as a hobby. I can speak from experience that you don't make money breading TMs if you put the preservation of the true breed first and love the breed. The basic cost of food and medical expenses are not the most expensive part of having a dog or breeding. The real cost comes in showing your dog to demonstrate it is a quality dog that meets the breed standard. Over the last decade the mills have tried to make a name for themselves and tried to redefine what a TM is in an attempt to validate these Chinese mix breeds. This in a attempt to force the standard to change. What one has to realize is that this is driven by greed and buyers who are so selfish that they would not know how to take care of a "Pet Rock". The Chinese have no problem harvesting organs. No surprise they have no problem killing off the original dog breed for profit. Please keep in mind that the owner in the video rescued these to dogs and should be commended on his compassion for these poor animals.

The Chinese are breeding these dogs for profit regardless of how it impacts the health of the animals. The Chinese have and are mixing different breeds with TMs and calling them TMs. Rather than calling them for what they are mixtures of, like they did with the "Tigon", they are calling them TMs. Trying to leverage the good qualities of a TM to sell their inferior product. When you mix breeds to create a different breed (Tigon) that is very different from trying to sell a Tigon as a bigger tiger when it is a mix of a tiger and a lion.

Let me start out by saying I have only a small objection to them being called Chinese Tibetan Mastiffs, The big problem is that they are almost never called by that name they are call by the Chinese Tibetan Mastiffs. The narrator in this video does a good job of describing the differences and then at the end calls them Tibetan Mastiffs. the Dog breeds are classified according to their function and physical traits. That is why there are 9 dog groups in the AKC. The Tibetan Mastiff is in the working group because of the functions it was bread to carry out. High-attitude adaptability is not a function. The ability to protect homes and flocks (wolf killers) are functions. These large Chinese Mastiff were not bread for the same work functions as the Tibetan Mastiff. Based upon their physical capabilities I question if they could survive as a working TM in Tibet. The problem with calling a Chinese Mastiff a Tibetan Mastiff is that they were bread by mixing Tibetan Mastiff with other large breed dogs for size and color. A dog from the mixing of two different breed of dogs is usually call a mutt. A mix of dogs can be refined and breed over time like the Labradoodle. Some day the Labradoodle will be a breed defined by what ever physical, personality, and other distinguishing traits that define them as a breed. There are standard developed by breed clubs all over the world for the various breeds. Internationally, you will find small differences in the standards for the specific breeds. I think you would be hard pressed to find any club's standard for the Tibetan Mastiff, that was established before 2000, where a Chinese Mastiff could qualify as a Tibetan Mastiff. The only thing wrong with the Chinese Mastiff is that the Chinese decided to pass them off as Tibetan Mastiffs to cash in on heritage of true Tibetan Mastiff breed. If the Chinese want to come up with a breed of mastiff, long haired, face covered with hair, Chow colored dogs, Great. That is how all the so called breeds came into existence. But don't call them Tibetan Mastiffs. I have two other comments. You said "the majority of breeders breed for profit and don't care about the impact on the animals health" we call them puppy mills in the United States. These people are not dog lovers and along with their clients are one of the reasons stray dogs are a problem in this country. There is a percentage of breeders who do not breed for pure profit. They breed to maintain the heritage and quality of the breed first. I agree the Chinese are not the only ones breeding for pure profit. Puppy mill breeders have no borders as does greed. On the the other side there are people in Tibet and in China that breed to maintain the heritage of the Tibetan Mastiff. You said "virtually every dog today is bred for profit". If this were the case there would be no reason for organizations like the AKC or individual breed clubs to exist. If you want to associate the Chinese Mastiff with a Tibetan Mastiff do the samd thing the Labradoodle people have done, mix the names. This breed comes from breeding a Labrador with a Poodle., An honest name. Chinese Mastiff was breed for Chinese market, rather than occupied Tibet. Base on is targeted market, I think Chinese Mastiff is more accurate name. Also consider, that when China invaded Tibet in the 1950 they made every attempt to destroy the Tibetan culture to try and assimilate them into China. This included the killing of Tibetan Mastiffs. The Tibetan Mastiff plays a large part in the Tibetan culture. Then some breeders in China decided that if they could increase the association of the Tibetan Mastiffs with China that would add validity to the idea that Tibet is part of China. I am not trying to start an argument as to Tibet being part of China. Obviously, they are part of China at this point in history.

You mean like the English Bulldog? All dog breeds are human inventions. Most "breeds" have been extensively genetically modified over generations to fulfill some combination of, often temporary, cultural and economic needs. As a result, most "pure breeds" suffer from a wide variety of health and/or behavioral issues. Perhaps one of the most extreme examples is the modern English Bulldog whose breed-specific illnesses and disorders are so extensive that many fear they have risen to the level of animal cruelty. Due to such concerns, The Kennel Club among others have been pressured to introduced revised breed standards for the British Bulldog, along with 209 other breeds, that focus on the health of the dogs.

Cricket M You’re 100% correct. My family had an english bulldog that we paid over 3K for. We had surrendered her to a friend that owns a rescue as her health issues were too much for us to deal with. tens of thousands in surgeries needed, issues with her blood due to overbreeding, she was allergic to EVERYTHING including her own urine. she was extremely aggressive as she was abused by the breeder. the vet was so upset that a breeder would do that and suggested putting her down, despite her being not even 5 months old. Ever since then, we’ve only rescued animals. Adopt don’t shop, don’t make these greedy breeders continue to do harm.

I am a japanese living in china and also a tibetan buddhist, I have traveled to tibet almost 30 times and always heard sad stories of their dogs stolen by chinese breeder to sell to breeder in the market, in china alone, many unwanted tibetan mastiff are being dump or put to sleep cause the are way too big and expensive to keep. the price of a so called pure breed are so dirt cheap in china that there is a over demand of dogs in the market and many end up in the streets or left in dog salon or pet shop. i am a volunteer with the Shanghai dogs recue team and now they have almost 400 dogs waiting to be adopted , all without the support of the goverment. I hope eveywhere in the world people should learn to be more responsible

When a dog seems beset with breathing issues and weight that actually affects his eye health as the weight descends along with the hair and means an operation to pin the eyelids is required I feel that things are manifestly silly. The original mastiff is a far healthier and more humane proposition. It is possible to breed Frankenstein's monsters in terms of health profile and sometimes they don't know what else but persist. These dogs are sweet natured, they have the appearance of something that they are manifestly unable to achieve in tandem with health compromises that are ridiculous. This is bad breeding practice writ large, I'd argue.
Agreed, though I doubt the fur weighs much. Like a lot of human bred dogs, they have far too much loose skin around their mouth and face. Hopefully we can improve their genes in the future.
Well said. Pedigrees can be a sign of good breeding within certain breeds, but as with Persian Cats these have been bred to be a human vanity project, and it really is sad to see the animals suffer as a result.

When I was backpacking in Tibet, one night I stayed with the locals in a tent. In the middle of the absolute darkness of the night, I went out to the field to pee. As soon as I pulled down my pants and squatted down, a guard Tibet Mastiff launched at me in the dark, I heard the chain clanking, and a low roar, I pulled up my pants and ran like no one's business. I'm sure the dog didn't want to hurt me, otherwise I would have lost my ass that night.
In Tibet, they live outside, and they dig themselves a den in the ground, and rest in there at night.
And the black ones with goldenish eyebrows are the most cherished breed because they are the most aggressive and strong, and fearless of them all.

In China , we had an old saying: one mastiff can fight against three wolfs. About twenty years ago, the price of mastiff went rapidly high because of the commercial exploitation, then a lot places and people in China started to raise it as a valuable good in farm plants, and made different grades and ranks for them in order to get better prices and buyers. About ten years ago, the chain of exploitation broke, the price dropped dramatically, mastiff was not a good business anymore. Meanwhile Most city municipalities not suggested raising big dogs like mastiffs, or paying much more fee and sign a lot of legal papers. Many businessmen went broke, but those mastiff they suffered most...

It's basically an animal factory and by buying an animal at pet store you support the cruelty behind it. I refuse to buy animals, because they're not products. If you want a child, you don't go out and buy one, you either make one or adopt one. Also think about all the dogs in the shelters who die without getting out of there because some snobs would rather have an expensive pure breed to show off and brag about its price. Not to mention those pure breed animals suffer from many, many diseases resulting from keeping the breeds clean and selfishly modifying them to fulfil certain criteria (example in the video). The only way to stop it is to raise awareness and not buy them. The more you buy, the more animals they 'produce' because it's profitable, and the more homeless animals there are.
It's OK if you see a sick animal in a pet store and get it for free, otherwise the one animal you buy is replaced with another and the circle will never end.
