This is a grey area. Nowadays, a degree is not necessarily a requirement but some employers look for that. We can obtain certificates and add work experience in conjunction with the former. Though, that is not enough. Companies like to hear your achievements rather than your skills. It is getting more challenging to land jobs especially in the tech world like how I am part of. Now I have done some research and if you can find an apprenticeship, then that is a golden ticket if this institution or school has real world projects while working for an actual company. This is very beneficial to add on your resume and prove you have true competency.

I agree that it is a gray area. The key is to confirm you need the education before spending the money, so you don't make an unnecessarily expensive detour in your career.

Sometimes companies need those degrees and certificates. I prepared so many tender and I pack those things in every offer to brag about it. If somebody gets a degree in marketing then it will not make much difference, but if you need to build a bridge and you don't have guys with degree in hydro or port construction, then you will not get that contract. So, you need those degrees to even start talking about applying for tender or you can just hire a consultant who will put down that signature and will join project once you get it going.
