  • Lies - Stan Rogers
Stan spent some time in Eastern Canada and we get a hint of it in this song. The only time I have ever put canned milk into my coffee is in Newfoundland where it is quite common and it's always Carnation.
This song, LIES, is one that I had an awful time making it through without tearing up. I had most trouble with the line, "She'll look up in that weathered face that loves hers, line for line." I can identify with that.

I think we perform best when we can really connect a song. That stands true here. Lovely.

Thanks ever so much for bringing it Jim, really appreciate it, you did a fine job too. I first heard it about 10 years ago at my local folk club, I’d just started playing guitar (late starter or what) and went along to try and get some tips on playing. Anyway, one guy would play it at least once a month and the whole room would sing along with him on the chorus, I was hooked on the song after just one listen ! Thanks again, the imagery in the lyrics is special as far as I’m concerned.

Thanks for including it in your list Graham. I had never played it before and I'm not sure how accurate the chorus is, but it kinda works.

Hi Jim, a very sweet song. I can understand you tearing up. Easy to do if anyone is paying attention. Your voice conveys the emotion of the lyric. Nice picking pattern on the uke. Glad to have found you. Peace, Bill

I’ve got a Stan Roger’s tune in my ever growing list of songs to learn “Working Joe”. Such a good tune! Thanks for the reminder of his great stuff,Jim

This one was from Graham's list. WORKING JOE is a great song too. I'm looking forward to it. Do you know who Knowlton Nash is?

@@AndrewMorsePDX He read the CBC news, The National, at eleven o'clock during the eighties. Stan sings the line, "Running from the crack of dawn till Knowlton reads the news," in the song Working Joe. I assumed that only Canucks would know what he was talking about. Knowlton passed about a decade ago.

Coffee is a black and somewhat bitter drink.
Carnation condensed milk (very thick and sweet) is great in certain desserts and no churn ice cream.

I prefer a shot of milk in my coffee, but to each his/her own.

Well played, Jim. I'm kinda mixed on the message within the song though, but that's just me. I drank a lot of canned milk during the pandemic. I found it to be pretty good. The color was off-white, more caramel.

My mom and other women folk in the family used canned Carnation and sugar in coffee. As a child I thought it tasty, better than the black my dad liked to drink
