So much shedding, it almost looks like a daily brushing kind of situation. I wouldn't want to be in the owner's shoes! ( They're probably filled with hair anyway :3 ) Hopefully we get to see her again soon, such a beauty.
They're so well behaved :) it's clear their parents have put a lot of work into socialising them, it always makes me happy to see "difficult" breeds who've had the proper work done with them to help them get on with others out of home :)
Absolutely. These dogs require a firm owner and socialization training. They are highly demanding breed. Require physical and mental stimulation daily. Probably the calmest Akita I’ve seen!
We adopted a Chow at our local shelter a little more than a year ago, he’s 8, and whoever owned him before did a wonderful job. He’s so well mannered, cuddly, and loves attention. He’s gentle with children and small animals. A cat came up to me for pets on a walk the other day and he gave her no mind. Just about every Chow stereotype there is he’s the opposite.
In my opinion, there's no such thing as a "aggressive" breed. Every single dog is normal and tolerant of other animals with proper socialization in puppyhood. After that, it will take more work and will not always be possible to rehabilitate and socialize an adult dog. So yeah, these dogs are just an example of what any dog truly is when handled properly - a good boy/girl!
I like that she stopped flexing her jaw as soon as your hand got near. She's trying to get the happy hoodie off of her, or at least move it somewhere more comfortable, but clearly _does not_ want to hurt or attack anyone. It's purely personal discomfort similar to what we'd do if our clothes were uncomfortable.
You can see how much relief she had from this grooming. This is why taking care of your pets is so important. Just bringing her the relief of a good shed fur removal is so important to their quality of life.
The beekeeper’s hat veil thing is such a big brain idea to survive in the furnado! This is the first time I’ve seen this (i dont watch a lot of grooming videos) I’m immediately ordering two now. Every Saturday I help my wife in her grooming salon and de-shedding work is hell. Moisture and clouds of fur stuck to the face 😩 I hope this will help!
Many years ago (the 90’s) I used to go to this place called, Do It Yourself Doggie Detailing in Boise, Idaho to wash my doberman Rottweiler. They provided these hats for the blow dry areas because otherwise you were completely covered!
She seemed very much convinced that it had to be some sort of creature grabbing her too. She was clearly looking for the third dimension it had to have a presence in, trying to bite it. Too bad for her, it was flat. 😂
Yeah that supposed happy hoodie doesn't work on all animals, it just irritates some to no end rather than calming them. (Though really it doesn't calm them so much causes a instinctual reaction as if they are pinned)
It's obvious Yumi LOVES the blow dryer, though not so much the happy hoodie. The salsa dancing was both extremely funny AND extremely entertaining. And Kuma clearly wanted your services, Vanessa. We need more of this dynamic duo.
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ That's a very apt passage. This groomer is clearly doing God's good work by helping pets and their owners. Truly someone to see as a mentor.
I have an 11 year old Akita male named Roo. He's a good boy. It took a solid 3 years of constant and regular training to get him to be a good dog citizen. They are awesome dogs, but a genuine PIA to train.
Anything worth having takes effort and responsibility. I've had Rottweilers mostly and the story is the same. People might doubt it,but if you look at dog bite fatalities they surpass the #1 spot as that's taken by a type and a mix of said type of a dog. Not a uniform or distinct breed. Long and short of it is I wish more people put in the effort like you did. Large and capable breeds aren't accessories, fashion statements or status symbols. Cheers
I think most Japanese breeds are a real pain to deal with. I've heard that shibas and tosas are incredibly difficult. I've got a history dealing with dangerous/aggressive/problem dogs of varying breeds and mixes, and one of the only times I've ever felt truly nervous and imperiled one on one with a single dog was a ~110lb Akita named Kuro that was owned by a reclusive old drunk who was losing his mind. The poor dog was not socialized at all and very protective of the owner (who by then had no hard and fast concept of reality). Sad situation overall, but the dog ended up alright and I didn't get bit too bad.
“The face of an Akita with the personality of a Golden Retriever”. I love that. Also I couldn’t help but aww at Kuma being concerned about his wife. Too cute.
I love how the variation in her coat pattern really appeared after her groom. The brindle lines really popped out after the majority of the undercoat was gone.
I had an American Akita for about 10 years. He was the biggest sweetheart and way too clever for his own good. I had to brush him outside because he seemed to be constantly blowing out his coat. The neighborhood birds loved the fur and I'd see it in birds' nests for weeks after.
The birds in our neighborhood had The Cushiest and The Best Insulated nests because of our Akita and his shedding! The birds would literally line up on the phone wires waiting for us to finish our daily brushing so they could swoop in and swipe all that fur!
When I told my husky that the birds really needed his fur to build their houses, it was much easier to get the job done! He was fascinated when I showed him old birds' nests and protective of small birds
A family member had an Akita, and because of a house fire, he lived with us for a time while the house was repaired. Morpheus (or Morf as everyone called him) was a big teddy bear. Alert, but quiet, just the sight of him made people afraid, but he was completely approachable even with strangers. The sad part is that the larger breads don't live long enough. Morph began walking in circles and wanted to lie down but couldn't. He was eventually put to sleep and it was a tragic time for so many members of the family, me included. I've had both dogs and cats. If a cat is healthy, it may live twice the age of dogs, but we've had to put a couple of them down, too, and it's been equally difficult losing them. But, pets bring such a joy into our lives that, for me, the joy outlives the sorrow.
I'm guessing dogs die quicker because of the poison they are administered from the first injection to the last also all the treats and dog food made by big companies doesn't help either dogs would never eat inch wild how they do when they are owned that probably also has an effect on their health
Hip dysplasia? Had the same thing happen to a dog of mine. You're right, that's the shame with working class dogs. If cancer doesn't get them or their hearts don't give out, by 9, 10 years old those poor hips are ready to go. Sorry about your loss, bud.
A friend had a huge male akita. They had raised him with tons of love. He was always happy to greet visitors. Kids were his favorite. He would play with the kids the whole time. Watching him with babies was hilarious. Gently sniffing, then placing his head on their belly. Of course his head was bigger than the baby. He would let babies and toddlers do whatever they wanted. He'd just give them kisses. He was an absolute doll.
Same can be said for my Rottweiler, Annabelle, god rest her soul. She was a gentle giant. How a dog is raised contributes to how a dog is. I personally don't think a dog is aggressive because of its breed. More so from how it's raised. Your friends Akita sounds like a great dog.
I had a very large 140 lb American Akita rescue who we nicknamed’Mr. Cementhead’, but he was the gentlest soul with the little, especially my ASD child when she was overwhelmed. He would just lay down that velvety head in her lap and our female Akita would box her in on the other end with her warmth. She couldn’t escape, nor would she want to. She would fall asleep with her buddies because she felt safe, and she was. Best babysitters ever!❤️
@@nycliz2011 RBF=Resting Bitch Face 😂. It's when someone's default face, no matter how pleasant they actually might be, makes them look mean and bitchy.
@@nycliz2011 "Resting Bitch-Face." On a person, it's that sort of face that always has an expression of being vaguely irritated about everything, even when that's the exact opposite of the person's actual mood or personality. On Kuma, it's a perpetual grumpy bear face that also kind of makes him look like he wants to speak to the manager.
I am so impressed with how calm and compliant those Akitas are. Usually they’re a bit more standoffish. Though I have found lately that so few people get akitas that the people who do did their homework and provided them tons of socialization. Most I see are very sweet because of this.
The owners properly trained her unlike many owners. I have a customer that has a mixed breed (he's a mutt of some kind), fairly large boy and when they come in he is always shocked because apparently he jumps up on people and drags his owner around a bit. I'll come out from behind the counter to say hello and the moment he even looked ready to just I'll just give a little "Uh!" and point a finger at my feet and he'll sit right down at my feet to get his pets. It confuses the heck out of his owner because he doesn't listen to him. I just told him he has to train him better. I only see him a few times a week at best but he already knows to listen to my commands unlike his owner.
Yumi is absolutely beautiful! And she looked even more gorgeous after the expert grooming you did on her. I love watching your videos and the before and afters. It is very apparent you love all these animals. Thank you for the beautiful content.
I've only seen an Akita in the flesh once. I was standing at the counter in my vet's office & turned to see two of them right behind me. I knew they were big dogs but was surprised at how heavy & dense they are (if that makes sense). Of course I had to pet them both (after asking their owner if it was okay). It really was kind of a thrilling experience. 💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙🌿💙
My neighbor had one when I was a kid. I had to walk by it to get to the school bus stop. Every single day that thing growled at me and tried to charge at me. Luckily it was always leashed. It was great to experience that at 7am every day.🙄
I got to know a few Akitas living in Japan as a Navy brat, the male, Bear was huge, but very good around mostly everyone. One young kid liked to stop and antagonize him every morning. Until one morning when he got loose and chased that kid for a long way nipping at his rear all the way. Needless to say, He never did it again. Bear was actually scared of pigeons, cool dog.
@@evilsharkey8954 They put him outside on the leash in the morning, before walking it, from what I saw. I just realized, also, that it was a chow chow. Fucking HUGE. Woops!
THAT is a quality furnado. I love how she just stood up after the happy hoodie came off, like "OK, fine, I'm happy again, let's get on with the hair storm"...
I love your expression after you took the Happy Hoodie off and Yumi did the Wriggle of FINALLY! The way you both trust each other and you understand her communication is Hanrahan.
Gorgeous dogs and a lot of work, but really she was so well behaved. So glad to know that you've been grooming her since she was just a little puppy. That probably helped a lot.
As in the title, it's great to challenge potential future/current Akita owners with the fact that the grooming involved to care properly for your dog is significant. I would say that this kind of research is important for all dog owners. We recently got a Kerry Blue Terrier and the grooming is probably ten times more involved than for our last dog, an Irish Terrier. We knew it would be more involved but maybe not to this extent, so we now try to inform all potential future owners. Gotta love our doggies!
Three weeks ago I had to put my 12 year old Akita to sleep.... He had cancer and arthritis but was happy and otherwise healthy. Saddly one night he bit the tumor on his behind and started bleeding out and I had to do what was best for him. He was the best dog I ever had and was always so sweet and gentle and stayed that way even on his last day. I got his ashes back last week and I'm going to plant him in a cherry tree in my back yard. I don't think I'll ever get another dog but I will always love Akita's.
Now that is a brilliant dog owner right there! Akitas can be very dangerous dogs in the wrong hands, as all dogs can be. These are supremely well trained to be kind and gentle. ❤😂. Beautiful dogs!
@@evilsharkey8954 Akitas are also just dogs with VERY strong personalities. They're not easily manipulated and have a lot of pride. That, too, can make them tough trainers.
@@JohnnyShagbot Purebred dogs have been bred to have certain behavioral and personality traits. Akitas were originally bred as temple guard dogs and bear hunters. They form strong attachments to certain people and can be aggressive to others. They’re not attached to property like German shepherds. Anyone looking to adopt or buy an akita should be aware that they can be dangerous if you’re not careful or if you get bad blood. They’re very strong, too, so if they do become mean, they can do serious damage. My parents had two akitas. One was a great dog… as long as you weren’t a raccoon or woodchuck. The other murdered a family cat and tried to murder two others. The attack was out of the blue. She showed no aggressive or overly playful behavior toward any cats and then suddenly turned and attacked them without provocation.
@@evilsharkey8954 that must’ve been awful for you and your family! 🫢 I understand now how you have such good knowledge about the breed. Where were they from originally? What temples are the ones they were trained to guard?
@@klarag7059 They’re a Japanese breed. I accidentally used the term “temple” when I meant “palace”. The upper class used them as personal guard dogs, which they are very good at. If your akita bonds to you, anyone who messes with you is likely to get bit. They can be bad with other animals, strangers, and small children, so they’re not a general purpose pet dog like a Labrador retriever. They’re super smart, too, smart enough to be bratty. My parents’ good akita would hang around us outside and then use his ninja skills to get out of sight. If you called for him, he’d stand still and only come if he knew you could see him. He didn’t want to come. He wanted to sniff around the property (5 acres). The problematic female akita was surrendered to the local humane society under the stipulation that she be placed in a home with no other animals and no children under 12 and that they tell us if she was in danger of being put down. They never contacted us, so we assume she found a person. She would have made an excellent dog for a single person who likes to go running. Nobody would mess with a woman jogging with an akita, at least no smart person. On a side note, that personal guarding behavior is why I believe OJ Simpson is guilty. If a stranger had attacked Nicole, her akita would have demolished them. It had to be someone the dog knew very well.
As a seasoned (bonded pair) Akitas owner, I can only applaud you! She definitely has More Japanese somewhere in her lineage to have that coat. I’ve had both Japanese and American and my Japanese Tiger brindle had the thickest, densest coat of my 4. When she blew coat, for 2 weeks 2X a year, it was awful. Kids had alternating duties to brush. We actually used a horse tool which would grab the undercoat without grabbing their skin. Best discovery ever back then. There’s all kinds of helpers now. Bless you for your work ❤

Finally, the Yumi video! I did not realize she was bigger than Kuma and sooo much fluffier. Maybe the fluffiest Akita I've ever seen. With the coolest dance moves too, she really enjoys losing that compacted fur!
As a child I had a beautiful dog who was a mix of an Akita and a Rottweiler. Absolute titan, but the most fiercely loyal dog I've ever owned. Lived to the ripe old age of 16, and was born less than a month after me; He's got a permanent place in my heart. Looking at these two gorgeous dogs, I can definitely see his face in them.
She's gorgeous!! And such a good girl!! I don't think I've ever met an Akita in person, but they've always made me a bit nervous due to the reputation. But Yumi and Kuma are such angels!
I didn’t know that Akitas were considered “difficult” dogs until I did research about them. A family friend lived with us for a bit when I was 10, and he had an Akita and a Malamute. They were so well behaved, I could walk them both at the same time (which likely wasn’t a great idea in hindsight). I remember them so fondly, and also remember how incredibly dense both of their coats were.
They are inclined to be dog aggressive and have a fairly high prey drive (though nowhere near that of a Husky). From my experience, they seem to naturally dislike same sex dogs quite a bit more. They seem to get a bad rap. They are likely not much different than a german shepherd though far less obedient. They are super sneaky smart… play dumb but they know what is going on.
@@mackennaomara4868 If they're raised around each other from pups they're going to be ok, as well as having an owner that nips any sign of aggressive behavior off at the mere sign of it. We had a female Akita around female dogs and she gets snarly and mean but doesn't outright attack though she has bit out at them. Around male dogs? Nothing. Playful biting which we don't like and stop, but it isn't aggressive. Akitas have a few herding/protective instincts arounds its people too. Overall a good dog, but I can see when left unchecked by bad owners how this breed can get a bad rep real fast.
Her reaction to the Happy Hoody was hysterical. All frightening looking mouth and teeth dramatics. She's gorgeous & looks amazing after her groom. The way Akitas looks after all that is beautiful - all fluff & softness. I wish I could have you groom our 12yr old Akita. She needs it bad but none of the groomers around me will let me stay with her to make sure she doesn't get too stressed & grooming her myself is literally too physically demanding for me.
My brother's female Akita was Kuma. Such a great dog. She was fantastic with visitors, their obnoxious Jack Russell (who we also loved), and their two children. I'll never forget her.
Bred akitas for many years. I have never met a mean Akita that was not purposely made that way. They are typically gentle giants and excellent with children. Very easily house trained and well behaved. They are usually totally silent towards other dogs. They only bark to alert of new human presence and are quickly won over. Make no mistake though, they can be easily trained to be VERY EFFECTIVE guard dogs. They are susceptible to hip issues and heart worm. On average living about 12 years. One other trait I have noticed over the years, that they all seem to share… is they have memories better than an elephant. They will shower a family member with love and excitement, that they haven’t seen in over 5 years or better. I no longer breed them but still currently have a 4 yr old, 115 lb fawn coat male named Sansei. Just my 2 cents after many years of experience with this WONDERFUL breed.
What absolutely so well behaved dogs the owner must have put alot of work into socialising them it just goes to show you that if a big powerful breed of dog is in the right hands they make absolutely wonderful family pets but in the wrong hands they can become dangerous I would like to take the time out to appreciate all the hard work that Vanessa puts into grooming these absolutely beautiful Dog's and cat's and i would like to take the time out to thank Vanessa from all the dog's and cat's that can't say it for themselves you do a absolutely fantastic job...
I couldn’t afford to take my Akita to the groomers very often so we’d sit in the driveway and bond over bushies. The aftermath was giant white tumbleweeds that looked like dirty clouds! My Akita was a rescue I had already known so she came pre-trained. I wish I was healthy and together enough to get another. She was an amazing friend and family member.
Loved watching this. Lost my Akita 4 years ago after 13 great years with him brought back so many memories of his shedding. You'd brush him clean the house then 30 seconds later a tuft of hair would be on the floor😅
I miss my Akita so much, my heart is still hers after so many years. The shedding was so intense between the outer coat and the fluffy, warm, inner coat; I'll never forget that. They are such amazing creatures and you do a beautiful job.
I have had 3 beautiful Akita girls 😊 . I had to make a most hard decision to let my Akio who was 10 n a half yrs old go this past Thursday, she looked just like Yumi … and like Yumi brought 2 beautiful litters of pups into this world 🙂. I know the decision was right in my heart. I got signs of confirmation that it was right, and I miss her so much. The love these Akitas “Matagi Inu” bring is beyond amazing! Vanessa, I can't thank you enough for your videos. My little Shih Tzu has congestive heart failure. She is doing really well as I feed her only the best raw food, goat's milk, give her her meds and plenty of TLC. I can no longer send her to the groomers as I can't risk her getting any type of virus, as she is on medication to reduce fluid in her lungs and can sometimes has a really nasty cough. She also shakes in fear and they don't take breaks with her. Enter your videos! I have started grooming her myself. Purchased the professional grooming items and am actually getting really good at it! I was horrible at first lol, but just wanted to keep her clean avoid matting, etc. Now she looks great! My son-in-law saw her the other day and said she looked so good! So thank you, thank you, thank you. Grooming her now is our girl time lol. I groomed our two Akitas at home. I would spread their fur in our yard…squirrels used it for whatever their homes were and it kept the rabbits and opossums mostly away. The critters have returned after the loss of our pups. Amazing dogs.
Kuma destroying your floor because you scratched his chin is awesome. Also - I love the process of getting the fur off with water - it deeply satisfies me.
After being cleaned and the shedding taken care of, I must day turned out to be a very beautiful dog, super fluffy looking like the kind that if you gave it a hug you would sink into the never ending abyss of fluff. I heard they were fluffy but my lord I never thought they would shed THAT much.
Thank god for standard poodles! Lol! Yumi is absolutely gorgeous but dang the hair!! Great Akita parents also! Kudos for them for raising a wonderfully socialized Akita

Have loved all of my American Akitas. Especially the sassy ladies. They take a lot of good socializing and training to achieve a wonderful temperament like Yumi, so amazing owners for sure!
Akitas are the greatest dogs ever. My beloved Chaka passed away in 2013. She was born 9/11/2002 and was the greatest dog I have ever been around. Her demeanor was awesome, but she was very protective of our family. I still miss her daily. This was a great video on how to groom this awesome breed.
What an adorable dog! Dogs who shed are such a hassle with all that fur! 😂 you can probably make a whole coat out of it! What a big adorable cutie! I can imagine how much fur their parents have to deal with! 🥲
You definitely can make clothes out of shed dog fur, but you should only do it if you live in the coldest places on Earth, because shed dog fur clothes are _so_ insulating, you can easily die from heatstroke if you wear them anywhere that isn’t lethally cold.
I love Kuma and Yumi she definitely wears the paws in that marriage 😂😂 their tik tok are funny informative about the American Akita and what not to do and what to do when around this breed ❤️❤️🐶🐶

She's gorgeous 🥰 Brings back memories when I had my Akita; Sheba. It was amazing how much fur I'd remove from her - reminded me of an exploding Cattail plant 😂
Having two Akitas I can Hines say that if the owner takes a few minutes a day to brush the fur it will never get as bad as this. I brush for a few minutes a day everyday and people can’t even believe how little hair I have in my home. When it’s time for their shower I brush very well also. Food and care also make a huge difference in the coats.
You can tell that she feels so much better after her de-shedding appointment. She’ll be back in a week.

"Yumi is shedding enough coat to insulate a house!" 😂
And I learned something new- why bears run up against trees! Thank you!
It’s funny how Kuma looks serious and motionless in his grooms but Yumi looks so happy in her’s lol
Kuma is, "YES! Worship me, inferior being! Bask in my glory!!!" while Yumi is, "Thanks, all this hair was starting to get on my nerves."
I teared up a little when reading this. I'm sorry about Morph and thank you for sharing.
@@iculas Thank you.
@@Katzendaugs Thank you.
We have a German Shepherd like this but he also likes to play chase/tag with preteens and teens when the yard is in full swing of grass growth.
Sounds like a couple of sweet dogs!
Best babysitters ever!❤️
fighting breed dogs are always great dogs, right up until the moment they're not.
I love the huge difference in personality between Yumi and Kuma! Yumi is openly gentle and loving, while Kuma is RBF incarnate 😂

True, socialization is key. I still respect the trait of the breed, a not pushing my boi past his limits, and help others understand that as well.
@@SilvaDreamsThat’s an example where I would say the training is needed as much for the owners as for the animal!
@@berthaadamson1225 Oh definitely

Yumi is beautiful and really is an expert salsa dancer.
And Kuma begging to be groomed ASAP is both adorable and hilarious.

My neighbor had one when I was a kid. I had to walk by it to get to the school bus stop. Every single day that thing growled at me and tried to charge at me. Luckily it was always leashed. It was great to experience that at 7am every day.🙄
@gökotta Girl 😂
@@RunninUpThatHillh They’re definitely not a dog for everyone… like your neighbor who kept it on a leash.
Woops!

Gorgeous dogs and a lot of work, but really she was so well behaved. So glad to know that you've been grooming her
since she was just a little puppy. That probably helped a lot.
Beautiful dogs! So well behaved, you can tell they've been getting groomed since puppies❤🐾
There’s some bad blood in akitas from them being used for dog fighting for a while. You have to watch out for that.
I understand now how you have such good knowledge about the breed.
What a well-behaved bear.
Bless you for your work ❤
No thank you sounds like way too much work.
I had an American Akita and when she was shedding we also used a horse brush. It worked miracles!

Very impressed by how well you handle these big furballs -- and keep them so calm.
so great to see well trained well bred dogs with good breeders :)
They are super sneaky smart… play dumb but they know what is going on.
yup. friend had one when we were little. it was a terror. but thats 99% the fault of the owner.
Ur friend was apparently a great dog owner/trainer
@@Bonzi_Buddy both dogs were males ironically
Such a gorgeous pup. Mine passed seven years ago and I still remember him so fondly and miss him dearly. Dash was such a great friend and hemorrhoid.
Yumi is a huge beast, but so polite! A beautiful animal with a wonderful personality

Omg!!! They are gorgeous dogs. When you socialize them and train them right then you will have an amazing pupper.
