I would love to see another Akita! I work with an Akita at a doggie day care. Skye is so wonderful. I am honoured to work with her and love it when she gives me kisses.
(This is not a story meant to represent all Akitas. Show caution with any large animal.) My uncle had an American Akita who I grew up with. He communicated by crying and he was the world's biggest baby. I could hug him, put my face up to his, and never once even while brushing him (Which he hated), did he even so much as nip at me. He was perfectly behaved, although he did chew up some furniture and books when he was a puppy. He hated hats and gloves and would bark at you if you wore a hat until you took it off, and would try to gently pull gloves off your hands with his teeth. He liked keeping people in one place, and would bark and order us to stay together in the garage. He once found a kitten, and could tell it was an infant and a pet, not prey, so he picked it up in his mouth, walked to the nearest person, and started crying until someone found and took it. He raised a husky as his own pup and she became the second best dog I've ever met. His name was Roshi. He was the single greatest dog I've ever met, and knowing how Akitas usually behave, he only gets more impressive.
Slight correction, Akitas weren't bred for protection but hunting. They were even used for hunting bears. Their job was to taunt the bear until the hunter had a good aim at the bear. A pretty fearless breed to go head to head with a bear, so a healthy dose of caution is definitely a smart way to go with grooming them. Kuma's owner probably knows all this, seeing as they chose to name him "Bear" in Japanese.
Yes yes. We want a video dedicated to Yumi. Learnt about Akitas first from your page and I’ve been so excited about them ever since. I love to admire but I certainly don’t think I can own one personally. Also found Kuma’s instagram thanks to you! 😍😍
I had an Akita/Chow mix growing up and I remember the teacher at our dog training class was like "😬 he's gonna be a lot to handle." His name was Dozer (short for Bulldozer 😅) and he was honestly the sweetest, most gentle fluffball of a baby. Unless you tried to mess with his family. He passed when I was 18, and 12 years later I still miss him.

@KATIE Bad owner, not bad dog. Because they're a handful, you need to spend huge amounts of time with them. If that's not done, you're not the alpha they respect. Just one of the pack. Certain breeds are just more likely to have certain traits you need to handle. If you don't handle anything, don't expect them to be cute little lap dogs. Applies to every breed. The least well trained dogs are usually the tiny ones. Barking at and attacking everything, because their owners look at them more as an accessory than a dog
Reminds me so much of my "Mojo." He went with me everywhere and yes, he was hyper-selective of who came near. I'm old now and had many types of dogs all of them fantastic in their own ways but my Akita will always be my favorite. I only hope he's waiting for me when I leave this world.
These are powerful dogs. Once at a dog park with a big male Akita in the doggie crowd, they started playing too rough and the Akita started to show aggression. His owner jumped right in, yanked this gigantic bear dog out of the crowd, held him down on the ground with his weight and started raising this voice at him sternly to stop. I was SHOCKED and thought the owner was really extreme, should I be worried of this tough discipline? Later I learned more and understood the magnitude of this dogs power. Btw this owner loved his dog, I later found him laying on the grass with him alone stroking him lovingly as if he was apologizing and explaining to the Akita what happened like a father to a son.
In an ideal world the Akita is perfectly trained and simply reacts to commands under any circumstances. That is rarely the case though, especially if the Akita is reacting to some kind of provocation. Akitas are extremely headstrong and stubborn. Obviously without being abusive, it is absolutely essential that the Akita recognizes its owner's dominance. Sometimes that requires a show of physical dominance and a stem voice. This particular breed demands it, and they will generally only allow one person on earth to fully exert dominance.
If he had to resort to that, the training wasn't done properly. The lady on Its Me or the Dog, Victoria Stilwell , has worked with every aggressive breed & never been bitten: using reward based training. Whereas Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, who uses outdated dominance theory is ALWAYS getting bitten. Both have YT channels as well as TV shows.
@@johnoneill5661 Japanese akitas have some bad blood, too. Japan almost eliminated the 2,000 year old breed because people had been breeding them for dogfighting for too long and over saturated the gene pool with some terrible DNA.
I had a neighbor who people would freak out over how she handled her Jack Russell. She trains service dogs, it's just that Jack Russells would rather play than obey!!
I grew up with an Akita, his name was Argos. Everyone in my family still remembers him with love and pride; he was just majestic. I’m the happiest every time you upload a video with Kuma ❤
Back in my 20's, a friend of mine's family had an American Akita. Stunningly huge animal, and I got all the warnings before going to their house for the first time. I chose the "ignore him until he likes me" route, and that's what happened after my first 2 visits. She and her family were floored that this "vicious" dog turned into a fluffy pile of mush when I visited. Sure do miss that dog.
Yeah, we had an Akita growing up, coincidentally enough his name was Kuma too lol He was the biggest love bug, but every once in awhile, someone wouldn’t pass his vibe check & it would get tense. Very protective dogs.
It's the same with olde English bullmastiffs they love you , in which case your getting 70pounds of love and slobbers hurtling your way, or they don't love you ............😬
I was on good terms with a certain Akita I visited often. One time I visited and caught the dog off guard and it was just looking at me from across the room and slowly approaching. I got concerned enough to say his name as clearly he could not smell me yet. He recognized my voice and immediately changed demeanor. Pretty wild. After that Akita passed, the owner got a rescue that is a straight up coward. I have to make sure I do not scare her instead of the other way around. She was likely neglected more than anything. Sad. But she knows she is loved and has warmed up to people in her circle. If you get her wound up then you can see some Akita traits come out. They will nip you from behind!
I have a half Chow-chow half American Akita. Entirely pure black beside his beautiful amber eyes, purple tongue, and white teeth. Got him from the shelter. Went in to look for a cat, locked eyes with him and it was over. No idea who had him before me but he's one of the most well mannered, well trained, and polite dogs I've ever had. Everything said here is entirely true about them. Docile when crated and peaceful when left free to roam the house but will trash my entire room when left in there alone. Sociable with other dogs and plays a little rough but has never outright attacked another dog. Almost never barks, but whistles and whines happily at me when I come home from work Absolute snuggly baby with certain people, completely avoids others Has his own spot on the couch and gets upset when people sit there (He'll sit in front of them and stare until they move, then jump in it) a gentle soul that's super great with kids Extra picky eater I had to change all the door handles in my house to knobs because he learned how to open them. Loves scratches, ear-noogies, and brushies HATES baths. He refuses to eat whenever I'm not at the house He's my best boy and I love him

Sending many prayers for the big old good boy Hope he wins the fight like the champ that he is and lives a long and healthy life! Best wishes to both of you ❤️
It was kind of hard to get perspective on how BIG this boy was until you held his foot up for a nail clip..that looked the size of a Saint Bernard!! Yowza! Thank heavens he has a chill temperament. And the advise on their comfort is top drawer to avoid injuries of self defense. Would love to see the wife too.
I'm my American Akita's favorite people and I'm very glad. It was quite difficult for the other members of the family because he simply ignored them. But after 5 months with us (he was 2 and a half when we adopted him) he starts to show joy for every member of the family and not only me :D
I had an Akita puppy as a kid, and he was a very good boy. Very good with us kiddos. My current family dog is just as gentle, a little overweight, and never ever bites or growls. One time he stepped in an ant hill and we were trying to tend to his paws, but he was in a lot of pain. To tell us to stop, he would swing around as if to bite, but then stop and lick our hands instead. We didnt push our luck though 😬
Personal experience is the worst thing among dog-breeding. I mean, if you just mean it as a cute anecdote then by all means. But never ever think your experience defines a race, it's what ruins so many inexperienced.

Would love to see a Norwegian Elkhound one day, I grew up with one. They’re basically the Skyrim edition Akitas but tend to be more affectionate and tolerant when it comes to kids. My parents both had akitas first but went with an Elkie once all us kids were around.
I had an elkhound for 18(grew up with her through adulthood) years, although I think maybe she had Shepard in her somewhere, as she wasn't a 100% match to other elkhounds. Still miss her even after two years. Great dog with great temperament
Your dog advice is always so spot on!!! I love dogs, always have and ‘trust’ the dogs I love. But it’s so important to remember their… culture (?) is so different to ours. I love you saying they ‘communicate’ by lashing out. Exactly!!! So true. Another amazing video.
I agree, and I think it's just important to remember that dogs interact very differently than humans, and we should not project human emotions and assumptions onto the dog to the point that we forget we are dealing with an animal--a very powerful animal.
I’m sure someone else will bring an opposing view point or they’re elsewhere in this generally lovely community but you have nothing but enthusiastic finger snaps from me.
Love that you share so much info on dog breeds and grooming. He looked so handsome in his tie. He looked like such a gentleman caller ready for a date. :)
I love your advice on the balance of trusting the animal, but being aware that they’re capable of hurting you if they feel scared or threatened. I work with wildlife and hearing others respect the animals they work with, including domestic, is incredibly refreshing. Thank you for your compassionate work for so many beautiful creatures.
My Kuma looked just like yours, only he was just a tad darker in the face! I fell in love with the breed in the late 80's after seeing them for the first time at a dog show and was stunned by their beauty. I also fell in love with the name Kuma, only to later find out a LOT of people used that name because it means "bear" in Japanese, and they do kinda resemble bears at times! They are the most loyal, beautiful, sweet, yet at times the most fierce dog you can own. My Kuma didn't like to cuddle that often and hated his head touched. But my female, Mika, wouldn't stop leaning on and licking people! My son loves to tell people how protective she was of him after he was born. When he was 4 or 5, one of his dad's friends, thinking no one was home, jumped over our locked gate to get into our backyard so he could borrow a tool. My son was playing and jabbering away to her when he said all of a sudden she nudged him behind her, started growling with her fur raised along her nape and then started stalking towards the guy. I had just gone into the house for a second when I heard her bark once and knew something was wrong. I had never seen a grown man shriek and jump back over a fence so fast in my life! He later said he thought our son was playing with a bear! They are wonderful dogs. You just need to train them well, learn about the breed and understand their idiosyncrasies and you'll have a happy life together.
That advice at the end was solid. We love this animals and they are amazing but that still an animal and you have to exercise some caution. Great video!
My uncle had an Akida mix, I was one of the few humans he liked. He was a snarky tough as nails brute, if he wanted something he would nibble your fingers or bite the back of your shirt.

@@Xsynth There is no such thing as a “love” bite. We score bites on a scale. Level one is nose punches, mouth grips (without any marks, holding rather than biting down). Anytime a dog nips even if it doesn’t break the skin, that is legally a bite. This behaviour must be addressed by a professional. If the dog bites someone, you are liable. A dog who does these small “bites” /behaviors, will escalate pretty quickly in the right circumstances. This s a dog that should be muzzled when there are visitors or restrained.
I had two Akitas and you did an AMAZING job of describing the breed. I had a Japanese and American who were the best of friends and they lived to 13 and 14. What a great job you did with the beautiful Kuma.
I live with an American Akita, Bruno, he is awesome. My collie has taught him to bark but thankfully he does it far less than she does. He is the biggest dork I've ever known, and I bless the day he came to me. 🥰

Roxy was an amazing friend to me and my family, half Akita/ German Shepard, was very quiet- but when she barked she sounded like a grizzly bear, ultra protective, a fantastic family dog, very loving, when you sat down or laid down she always leaned up against your body, if you got up she wanted to go with you, she will forever be deeply missed!

I think they were all here at an appointment with the family once? Shedding with unneutered females could be that the mother can nurse better and the puppies get the milk with no hair in the way
Kuma loved you and was always a stoic and patient client. I truley miss seeing him and watching you groom him. I hope his wifey and last surprise litter is doing well. Rest easy Kuma you were a gallant boy and will be missed.

I still miss my own akita, Bear. He was born into the rescue system and my wife and I looked after the eight pups for their first weeks. We applied, and were approved, to keep one and never regretted it. From his markings there might have been a German Shepherd a ways back in his bloodline but judging from 2:20 he was pretty much all akita. He was too big to show (7-1/2 stone and 7-1/2 hands or 45kg and 45cm) but was accepted and worked as a therapy dog in the local hospice. My favorite photo of him is of my great-niece sitting on the floor and his huge head looking down on this tiny human. Children knew instinctively that this huge dog was a cuddle-monster - although their parents sometimes did not. As for 'not letting your guard down', Bear recognized an almost inaudible short 'ah' as the signal that whatever he was just about to do was off the menu. He's been gone six years now but I still miss him every day.
I had an American Akita/Newfoundland mix, beautiful 120 pound girl. She looked more like the Newfie but acted like the Akita. So loyal! One of her favorite pastimes was wrestling, and winning, against my friend’s wolf. Best dog ever!

What an amazing dog!
Great story! 😀
Kuma has a heart! And he wears it on his chest! It's adorable 🥰
He looked so serious 😂
It's like he's still in bodyguard duty while still being groomed.
Partly right, Akitas were used for hunting but were used as guard dogs for the children of Japanese royalty
Yes they were used for gaurding but they were initially bred for hunting
Shibas, their mini mes, would also help with bear hunts. Some hunters would just use shibas, two could take down a bear.
@@fvckingvillains I truly wonder what type of bear could be taken down by two Shiba's...
@@shoelacedonkey you'd be surprised how vicious they can be.
R.I.P Dozer.
I have an Akita Chow too! She is quite a handful. Hates everyone that’s not family, men especially lol
@@abeespinosa4162 It’s a bad breed mix. Chows are nasty. A chow breeder brought her show Chows to a vet clinic I worked at - they even bit her.
@@abeespinosa4162 Kim Jennie not just family but blinks both and hate especially men ( unless it’s tae if they’re dating I am half way thinking they are if they are I am happy both are wonderful people if not then I guess if good too to find someone who is more their type )
@KATIE
Bad owner, not bad dog.
I really believe we'll see our animal friends again one day. Thank you for sharing your tale of Mojo!
You will see him. God will bring you back together! 😃🎈
I much prefer the Japanese Akita’s not over bred for size and aggression like the american version.
Kuma is one of those dogs that just projects strength and confidence. Really beautiful animal.
That’s exactly what I used to tell people to do 😊 well done! ❤
@@mrnice7570 love that 😂👍
Yes - Please showcase Kuma's lady. 🥰 he's gorgeous.
Almost never barks, but whistles and whines happily at me when I come home from work
Absolute snuggly baby with certain people, completely avoids others
Has his own spot on the couch and gets upset when people sit there (He'll sit in front of them and stare until they move, then jump in it)
a gentle soul that's super great with kids
Extra picky eater
I had to change all the door handles in my house to knobs because he learned how to open them.
Loves scratches, ear-noogies, and brushies
HATES baths.
He refuses to eat whenever I'm not at the house
He's my best boy and I love him
My sweet girl passed away last night and watching these videos makes me smile. Love your animals with all your heart, their time is limited. Run In Peace Savannah, I miss you.

Please do a video of Kuma's wife. If their puppies are anything to go by, she's gorgeous too. Kuma's a beautiful dog as well.
Wait, dogs get married? No way 😂
She has separate videos with both Kuma and his wife and their puppies as well but you will have to go back about 6 months or so.

I love how he always keep his head high, so royalty-like
he is a proud boy He knows he is pretty
Of course we need a video dedicated to the wifey! She's so pretty and I've been lowkey obsessed with her ever since she first showed up on the channel and after seeing their pups.
He is so calm and regal. Like a general being served by his squire.
He looks very much like my Akita did in his healthy years. My boy is now 12 and battling a loosing battle with cancer so please keep him in your prayers

A lot smaller and lighter than a Saint Bernard.
You can tell he is so relaxed when he is being massaged he’s like “oooh that feels nice” lol
Excellent video! We would love to see kuma's wife getting her salon day too! As a tired momma she deserves it!
The way you explained that a dog bite is typically not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the human, is a solid reason why I follow this channel.
A dog bite _in the salon._
I love his little tie, how cute!
I love seeing Kuma! He’s such a beautiful, noble boy.
What happened to the Akita puppy?

Would love to see a Norwegian Elkhound one day, I grew up with one. They’re basically the Skyrim edition Akitas but tend to be more affectionate and tolerant when it comes to kids. My parents both had akitas first but went with an Elkie once all us kids were around.
We had an Elky when I was a boy. She was a super nanny for my younger brother and sisters.
What on earth is "Skyrim edition" supposed to mean?
Anyway, Norwegian Elkhound is nothing at like an Akita and is mostly just hunting dogs.
I don't see a hunting dog having much in common with akitas
Norwegian Elkhounds are my favorites. Super sweet and smart. They bear a passing resemblance to the Akita. But they're very different.
I had an elkhound for 18(grew up with her through adulthood) years, although I think maybe she had Shepard in her somewhere, as she wasn't a 100% match to other elkhounds. Still miss her even after two years. Great dog with great temperament
love how he never lowered his head, eyes always up and alert like a warrior
That heart shaped chest fur is adorable
Yes I would watch Kuma’s wive or them as a couple
"Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see a video dedicated to her." YOU KNOW WE DO, VANESSA! 💖🐕
YES YES YES
Yes to videos of Kuma & his wife plus other Akitas always! 🥹 so majestic 🐕
The size of that Akita alone is very intimidating.
I really admire your courage to handle him one on one.
Yes! Yumi needs a chance to be a star too!
I have an Akita and I can confirm all the commentary 😉 😉, especially love the word “selective” you use… I call it stubborn, and snobby!! 😂 😂 🐕
He just stands like a regal king. Beautiful dog! Yes, I would like to see a video of his wife too.
All of every dogs in your channels i love him the most i dont know why hes just so charming i watch every videos of him ❤❤
That advice at the end was solid. We love this animals and they are amazing but that still an animal and you have to exercise some caution. Great video!
My uncle had an Akida mix, I was one of the few humans he liked. He was a snarky tough as nails brute, if he wanted something he would nibble your fingers or bite the back of your shirt.
Yeah Akitas can be a bit mouthy, it’s all love bites. But I’m still cautious 😅
Jesus, learn to train your dog.
It’s not Akita it’s bad dog ownership.
A lab would do that if you let it.
@@tonymarselle8812 lol did you read the first two words? Guess not. First thing he was a guardian dog for a farm, he wasn't raised from a pup he was found fully mature in a truck. And, well labs are dumb as fuck.

There is no such thing as a “love” bite.
Can we please see Mrs. Kuma?? They had the cutest puppies
He is so calm for you! He knows you are a good person! He was such a good boy!! 😊 ❤🐶
I live with an American Akita, Bruno, he is awesome. My collie has taught him to bark but thankfully he does it far less than she does.
He is the biggest dork I've ever known, and I bless the day he came to me. 🥰
You’re so informative with all the dogs you work on. It’s amazing! I love learning new things from you 🥰
Kuma's owners must feel so grateful that he likes you! It can be such a relief to know that when they leave him in your care, both you and him are comfortable with each other. I have an Akita, and she only tolerates One vet. I hope she doesn't retire or leave, or else it'd be a nightmare to find another vet my little monster dog likes.
I was fortunate enough to know an Akita named Maggie who passed in August. She was a glacier with fur. An immense presence. She would roll over for belly rubs when she saw me

@@tgst1181 It's nothing to do with the breed, it's just what the groomer/the family call it because they had puppies 😂

R.I.P. Kuma ❤
Yes please wish to see His Wife 🐕 Happy New Year 🎄🎶🎉🎵🎊🥳❤🎋
I had an American Akita/Newfoundland mix, beautiful 120 pound girl. She looked more like the Newfie but acted like the Akita. So loyal! One of her favorite pastimes was wrestling, and winning, against my friend’s wolf. Best dog ever!
