    This is my wife's absolute favorite Depeche Mode song! It was written for a movie which is why it is so upbeat and commercial. They wrote it very quickly. Nothing sinister in this one, it is about someone really thankful to be alive and feeling the rain falling down on them.

      This is my favorite Depeche Mode song and I do love the movie Modern Girls. It made me so sad to hear that Depeche Mode didn't like the movie and wouldn't perform But Not Tonight in concert...although I understand that Martin Gore will perform it now.

    An interesting thing i found in all my years as a DM fan.. if you pay attention closely while listening to the albums especially the first 9 to 10 albums or so.. the last song on those albums is always a unique song that stands out from the rest.. it won't be mainstream but its always something special.

    • @DxModel219
      @DxModel219 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      this one was mainstream. it was the main soundtrack in Modern Girls a hit 80s movie.

      @@DxModel219 I can tell you that this song never made it to the radio if it was mainstream. Nothing of Depeche modes music in the states made it to the radio save People are people and then the various songs from Violator. So in between there lies the album Black Celebration. The other thing is Modern Girls was not a hit by any stretch of the imagination. Gross worldwide. $604,849. In fact to say worldwide would be misleading because it only ran in the US and Canada.

    To me, it's certainly one of their more innocent songs. As always it's easy to read into it and because it's Martin we're naturally suspicious. He's in a good mood and he feels alive when so often he's mistaken for dead and so- "My pleasure at being so wet", it's raining on me and I don't care. I'm alone but I don't care because nothing is going to bring me down, this night is different- But Not Tonight.

    • @chrisherrmann3991
      @chrisherrmann3991 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@My_Fair_Lady lol i know it's Dave singing. I meant it's Martin's song he wrote it and he is lyrics are always laced with dark points thus we are looking for it, naturally suspicious of his lyrics.

    I always took it to be a song about one of those glorious nights when you feel truly alive and clean, and in Martin's case of writing it and the reference to eyes being red/mistaken for dead and other nights not feeling this way for so long being about his days and night filled usually with the effects of his alcoholism at the time. ......A night of sobriety where he suddenly felt the simple beauty of walking through the rain.
    This one has a glide-y feel to the music and vocal stretched vowels to me that feels uplifting that match with my memories of moments like that when something just causes the world to feel gorgeous for a short while.

    B Side of Stripped but not for the US Market where the local record label had decide to chose But not Tonight for A Side ! A very very poppy song i like but Stripped is really better… The band didn’t love this track so much but had respect this choice. This song choice for A Side is probably also because of a movie in which this song was used. And then the band made a video for this one ;)

    This is the 12inch remix version , it is about 1 minute longer than the original and has an extra layer of vocal harmony mixed in.
    The original does not have the vocal ooos just before the lyrics kick in, other than that they are pretty much the same, they didn’t loop any vocals or add in any verses or extra chorus, I’m not sure which version I prefer, to me the original has a slightly harder sound to it , and it’s the one I’m more familiar with.

    The thing about the Black Celebration era (or the final Berlin Trilogy era) Alan was taking more of interest in production issues than the others ... Hence a really listenable experience. This carries on through the next 3 albums until he left in 1994... And Don't for get Shake The Disease,it's b-side FLEXIBLE and the next single It's Called A Heart (these were before Black Celebration Seph... A major shock for die hard Depeche fans that you had missed them... Remember the backlash from Somebody and If You Want

      On the topic of covering the "in-between" songs, if you are looking to fully cover every track the group put together chronologically, it may be helpful to also cover 1+2 by Recoil (Alan Wilder's solo release he recorded around the time of Black Celebration, it's short). Martin Gore released a cover album, Counterfeit, which released between Music for the Masses (1987) and Violator (1990) (Counterfeit features MLG's cover of "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth", a sound from which was later used to famous effect on Depeche's smash hit "Enjoy the Silence"). Wilder released Hydrology as a Recoil solo LP in 1988 in that same period. "Death's Door" was released as Depeche Mode for a film soundtrack in 1991, between Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993). Alan Wilder released the Recoil LP Bloodline between Violator and SOFAD; he also produced the Nitzer Ebb album Ebbhead in that same time period (some sounds recorded for this album would later be used on SOFAD).
      In summary:
      "Shake The Disease", "Fly On The Windscreen", "Flexible", "It's Called A Heart" (Depeche)
      Black Celebration (Depeche)
      1+2 (Recoil)
      Music for the Masses (Depeche)
      Hydrology (Recoil)
      Counterfeit (Martin Gore, 1989)
      101 (Depeche Mode live)
      "Time Turns Around (Eurotech Remix)" (Toni Halliday, remixed by Wilder. The guitar from this song would later be repurposed for the screeching guitar FX in the outro of Depeche's "Policy Of Truth")
      Violator (Depeche)
      "Come Alive (Alan Wilder Remix) (Nitzer Ebb)
      "Death's Door" (Depeche)
      Bloodline (Recoil)
      Ebbhead (Nitzer Ebb, produced by Wilder and Flood, who also produced Violator and SOFAD)
      Songs Of Faith & Devotion (Depeche)
      Completely understandable if you wish to stick with just the Depeche studio albums for the time being for the sake of keeping it simple, though it may be interesting for you to hear how the band's sound developed and expanded between each Depeche release. Hope this info helps!

    I was thinking of watersports (if you know what I mean)! When you think about it, the stars and moon aren't usually out when it's raining! So what could they mean? Well, a person's backside is often referred to as the moon. I guess the stars that bring tears to his eyes could be urine. As disgusting as it sounds, they may have done this for a joke. DM wasn't happy with having to write the song for the movie because it wasn't their idea to do so. So this subtle use of these double entendres may have them getting the last laugh...

    This song is an example of one of the (many) reasons Depeche Mode is so good -- they'll throw in an uplifting song but there is always some melancholy. "Here on my own... all on my own. How good it feels to be alone tonight" is one of those great lines.
    And to re-iterate what many people have already said... check out the live versions sung by Martin. Live in Berlin or Live at the Troubadour... honestly even better than this version!

    I basically like the song but it seemed a little like an obvious attempt to tack on a hit single. I don’t think the band thought much of it either considering they never or rarely performed it live. I’ve seen DM live 8 times since 86 and I’ve never seen them play it. They may have played it on their Black Celebration tour but I was thrown out of the concert sometime in the first 45 minutes of the concert for throwing folding chairs.
