Hi Gary, FYI, there are multiple published horticultural studies that prove SA as well as Humic Acid are effective on sweet peppers and increase yield, leaf size, fruit sugars, and fruit size and quality. Its not just a tomato thing, although tomatoes have near immediate visual results. Thanks for a great video! cheers!

I've done a brief search about Aspirin and Peppers and have found very little information. If you don't mind could you let me know where I might look to get more details? Many thanks
@@Randy_Smith try searching for salicylic acid and peppers. We cant use the drug name in horticulture as it is technically illegal to use a drug in any manner inconsistent with its product labeling. you will immediately find the studies you seek using the chemical name.
Thanks for this, I googled and saw research papers saying it has an effect on strawberry and pepper plants too! Perfect, as these are all what I'm currently growing! 😊🍓🌶🍅
Thank you! Just applied the second application this season in the gardens... Berkshires, MA zone 5B. Could have done it a couple times earlier, but learned about the option 2 weeks ago. Garden looks beautiful and my neighbors struggling tomatoes are thriving! We also add two tums tablets. The first round we sprayed the leaves and added to roots. This time just the spraying... on all plants, not limited to the tomatoes. We sprayed squash, pumpkins, cucs, toms, eggplant, peppers, and beans. Peace

@@FreshRoastCoffeeOhioI just watched that video. I think Gary said that hydrogen peroxide cleans the plant leaves and can clean off some fungus spores. The baking soda changes the ph making it inhospitable to fungus.

I experimented last year with doing something similar. Since the aspirin spray isn’t organic I wanted something that was. I knew white willow bark has the salicylic acid so I made a tea using it and sprayed the plants with the diluted tea. I did it every 12 days and it seems to have worked well. I’m doing it again this year.
That will work. For me organic also means harm. The Bordeaux sprays they used for grapes and fruit crops are not organic but are deemed ok for organic use. After watching your other video I’ve been drenching the tomato roots every week since the beginning of the season. Will let y’all know at the end of the season how it went. Every year the tomatoes I water from above get diseased. I have a subterranean water system for some of my tomatoes. Those rarely get diseased. I’ve only been watering with one tablet. Good tip on baking soda spray. I watched another channel before I found yours and they said to use 2 table spoons and it burned my tomato leaves badly even though I did it early in the morning. It was hot weather so obviously I should have used 1 table spoon.

Can you do a video on a spray schedule? I know there are many preventative sprays that we create (neem, baking soda, aspirin, peppermint, etc) but I think it would be helpful to discuss when and if they should be done in a particular order. Ie, could it cause an issue or lack of effectiveness of one sprayed neem oil and then immediately followed it with asprin? Another test could be what would happen if you combined all your preventive sprays into one mixture and sprayed only that mix on a specific plant every 10-14 days. Is it more effective? Would it burn the plant?
Dont combine the sprays. This type of video would be too difficult as so many factors come into to play on when to spray and what to spray. Please subscribe if you have a chance (Thanks!) Thanks. Yes, I've been subscribed for a long time now. You've helped me SOOOOOOO much with not just learning, but teaching others in my community. As for the video, I can understand the challenge with that. I think for me, especially when I grow San Marzano, I have to fight BER and leaf spot, but I also usually go through a bout with aphids, in general in my garden, so I sometimes struggle with which issue to prioritize and treat and when, or if I can hit a combo of neem to stop the aphids and aspirin to strengthen the plant itself.

Aspirin! How about that! Thank goodness for science and nature! I'm definitely going to do this next year. My garden plans didn't come to fruition this year - health stuff - so I'm slowly putting in "infrastructure" so that next year will be different, better. I may be able to plant some small, easy things in August along with you, like peas, or whatever can grow fully into the fall. I don't know what can be started in July, but maybe I can start something then too. Never give up. Never.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you! I'd like to try using turnips to replace some of the potatoes I eat. I'm diabetic, and potatoes spike my blood sugar. The cruel irony is that I'm also hypothyroid, and turnips are not good for thyroid. It's always something. I'll definitely try turnips.
Could you use alka seltzer, which also has sodium bicarb in it, for the aspirin? Or aspirin powders, which also have caffeine? They would be much easier to mix.

Gary, I missed your Strategies for a Successful Summer Garden Livestream, I hope I can ask you some questions here! I have 5 cell trays mostly w/ peppers and tomatoes, 3 of them are potted up and half of the tomatoes are over a foot tall, I plan on getting them in the ground this weekend. I started the peppers late, on the low end they are approx 1" tall and on the higher end they are 5-6" tall, plan(ed) to plant them in raised beds, but I have some kale, herbs, carrots, chard and other greens still doing well and planned to plant my summer crops around them in freed up areas of the bed. I'm worried they will get shaded out w/ the companion plants / neighboring plants, should I wait until they get bigger (especially the 1" tall peppers) or just get them in ground? I've been bringing them inside under grow lights every night to give them an extra 3-4 hours of light to keep them growing, not sure what to do.

When spraying tomatoes with aspirin AND H2O2, do you alternate so that you are spraying one alternating with the other weekly (so each is biweekly) or can you spray both on the same day.
Aspirin you only need to do like every 3-4 weeks. In some cases every 2 weeks for high disease areas. H202 I use on a schedule like every 2 weeks or so. It doesnt matter if they are done on the same day.

I have been wondering if using Alka-Seltzer would work. Alka-Seltzer contains three active ingredients: aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) (ASA), sodium bicarbonate/baking soda, and anhydrous citric acid.

Last question, something is eating on my Pak Choi, found droppings, looks like mice. I have a few of these in 3G containers, which i moved out of reach, but the ones in raised beds got tore up pretty good. I set traps around the remaining plant but nothings been caught, do I keep the traps out, or should I use something to repel them or pull the last Pak Choi and hope they don't start eating on my other veggies? I need help w/ this one!

Thanks for another helpful video. I know you said don’t apply to weak or diseased plants but do you think it’s ok to try on plants with leaf curl? On the video about leaf curl you eased my mind and I’m thinking it’s from the heat. Very hot here in MS.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks for the reply. I was making sure leaf curl wasn’t considered a weak plant. I want to spray to prevent other coming issues. Thanks again.
Hi Gary! 2 questions…if I’m in Texas where it’s already crazy hot is it too late? The second…how does this reconcile with “conventional” wisdom that says to always try and keep moisture off the leaves? Thanks!
I actually dont follow that... dont wet the leaves. We get summer storms that come ago so often here. 10 minute downpour and then sun. No damage. No more diseases than normal. You also made a video with a asprin and baking soda. Is the reason for this to catch any bacterial or fungal spotting disease? If you only have 81mg coated baby aspirin is it still okay go use that ; just to make sure to remove the coating so it dissolves?? Obviously I will make sure I have the correct aspirin to water ratios. Thank you

Hey Gary. I've been following you for quite some time. Always find your info informative and useful. I tried your aspirin foliar instructions. Ummm..... I'm not sure what I did wrong but instead of making the tomato plants healthier, they've never looked worse! These are taller, 4'-ish, some with flowers and tomatoes and others with just flowers. We were seeing signs of flea beetles, aphids, etc, and thought we'd give it a try. Did so on only one plant but believe maybe some of the misting may have blown to the nearest plant since we see the same damage only on the side closest to the experimental plant. So... what did we do wrong? Help, please! Thanks again for all that you do.
Hmmm 1 tablet of aspirin in 1 gallon water shouldn't damage anything. I have never seen that since Ive done this. I treated all 30 plants several times this year. That being said, I wonder what it was. If you did it on 1 plant, maybe, it was the aspiring but the drift is just not strong enough to do damage. Any chance the sprayer once had other chemicals in it? Like an herbicide? If it was a clean container, I just dont know why that would happen. So sorry. Another question, pest control. I'm using BT spray in the AM and Capt Jack's dust in the evening, I'm trying NOT to kill pollinators while fending off cabbage worms, aphids and other beetles etc. Also, there's a lot of ants crawling around my raised beds, and when I pull out a brassica for a harvest, especially cabbage or lettuce, i noticed A LOT of cut worms and other worms (not sure what they are, but NOT earthworms, more like centipedes), at the base of the plant where I harvested. The leaves are good and after washing very edible, should I be concerned w/ my soil life? There's a lot of insect activity in the soil, but everything is growing well. I hear people use nematodes or other treatments to kill of pests in the soil, is that necessary?
I wouldnt worry about the soil. So much goes on in there. The spray and dust is about all you can do anyway. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualified purchases. Thanks for a great video! cheers!
Thanks.

Peace
I did this last year when my tomatoes were looking week. Worked wonderful, and had a great harvest.

@@sherimcnamara6021 gary has a bunch of videos on it. Hydrogen peroxide kills fungus and the baking soda is a preventive spray to stop fungus from setting up shop on the leaves after you kill it with the Hydrogen peroxide

I tried it and it works. Thanks.
Excellent.

Thanks for the video.

Never.
So if you like them Purple Top turnips are cool and low maintenance for a fall crop.

You can leave peppers in the cups. Or put them up. If the roots arent constricted just let them get taller while you wait.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thank you!
Hey Gary, is there a way to strengthen the soil to prevent disease from occurring? Thank you!
More soil life really helps. Nature takes out Nature. For pests, beneficial nematodes help. For diseases nothing specific but for keeping your soil alive and active with soil life. However, that doesnt stop anything 100%.

Question, if the tomato plants are looking slightly off from weather and cool nights is it still okay to go ahead and spray with asprin, or should I wait until they’re looking as they should again?
I would wait. I would give them some water soluble with nitrogen and let them get back on track

Thank you!!!!
Glad to share
Gary, is it ok to apply this at the same time you fertilize with a soluable fertilizer?
Yeah aspirin can be sprayed anytime.

I have been wondering if using Alka-Seltzer would work. Alka-Seltzer contains three active ingredients: aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) (ASA), sodium bicarbonate/baking soda, and anhydrous citric acid.
Not sure I would but it on leaves but on soil it should get ASA to the roots

Last question, something is eating on my Pak Choi, found droppings, looks like mice. I have a few of these in 3G containers, which i moved out of reach, but the ones in raised beds got tore up pretty good. I set traps around the remaining plant but nothings been caught, do I keep the traps out, or should I use something to repel them or pull the last Pak Choi and hope they don't start eating on my other veggies? I need help w/ this one!
Trap is best. Im not big on stuff really working to repel mammals. The just seemed limited in effectiveness.

Gary, can distilled water be used for the aspirin spray? I get a lot of water from my dehumidifier in the basement.
Any water is fine
Is aspirin similar to ortho-silicic acid ? If I use ortho-silicic acid do I also need to spray aspirin ?
Spray or soak soil. But you want salicylic acid.

Thanks for another helpful video. I know you said don’t apply to weak or diseased plants but do you think it’s ok to try on plants with leaf curl? On the video about leaf curl you eased my mind and I’m thinking it’s from the heat. Very hot here in MS.
You can use it but its really for prevention for fungus. I dont think it would help with leaf curl

Nature lets it rain at all times and plants have done fine.

Thank you
Well use 4 of them but the coating does clog up sprayers. Even well dissolved it clogs. I would us at watering can if you need to use them and just water the roots. BS helps keep fungus from getting on the plant

The first option
Just like I soaked them. Most likely you have a lot of extra. You can hold it for next time or so. I dont know how long it lasts past a couple of weeks. I tend to just make a fresh batch.

So if you are increasin SAR by using SA, wouldn't it dial down the plants natural response when you DON'T spray SA ?
I can't answer that to be honest. But I havent noticed concern on a decade.
What if you waited to long and you have leaf curl and a few brown leaves??
You can still spray but its not a cure its more of an early defense.

Aspirin wont help them grow. I would give them some water soluble fertilizer with nitrogen

If using a sprayer, my suggestion would be to look for *ASPRO CLEAR* tablets ... these don't leave a powdery residue in your solution which may clog up your mister nozzle.
Thank so much
