  • For this painting I used 12x12 inch Grafix opaque white craft plastic and Tim Holtz / Ranger ink colors pitch black, currant, and pink sherbet, along with Pinata brass for the metallic. I also used 99% isopropyl alcohol and my Revlon styling brush hair dryer (on the cool setting) with the brush attachment removed. Scroll down to find my affiliate links to the products I use.

      Diana Thank you for that comment! I wish more people would, too. It scares me that some people have been telling others that denatured alcohol is a viable alternative to isopropyl. When no one is countering that, many people have no idea how dangerous the denatured can be. 💜💜

    Was just scanning through the video again and heard your comment about people not being able to get the Piñata brass outside the US and remembered a video by Edna Wagnar in France I saw a while back where she made her own metallics. Just went back and found it from about six months ago. Hope this helps those who can’t get it.

    Lorrie, this is my FAVORITE of all the alcohol paintings I've seen, and I've seen a lot!. I'm a newbie at making resin art, and I never knew about this Plastic paper your using. Can you tell me the brand and where I can get it, please? Also since we're in the Pandemic, I can't find 91% rubbing alcohol anywhere. Until lately I didn't even know about 99% rubbing alcohol. Where can a person by that, usually? I love in the Western part of the US, not CA, but one of the state's where the 4 corners connect.
    We were also in the middle of moving out of state. UGH! Moving in your 60's isn't fun and now I can't have a garage sale to get rid of most our things. My husband said we'll just move it all and have one at our new home. All my craft items are in a POD, packed away, in front of our house, on the street.
    I have ordered some new things and more alcohol ink as well as Yupo. I have Glossy photo paper, A LOT of it. Can I use that to practice on until I order the paper you use? Thank you SO MUCH Lorrie. It's people on you tube, like yourself that are keeping me from going bat nut crazy, having to stay in the house or in the yard, because of the Pandemic. So thank you (again!) 😂💖 and 👍 UP!

      💜 Thank you so much! The paper I used is Grafix opaque white craft plastic. You can get it from Amazon (there’s a link below the video in the drop down description box), on Joggles.com, or Jerry’s Artarama online. The 25 sheet packs are a much better deal than the 4 sheet packs if you decide to order some. There are probably other places, but those are the ones I have ordered from before. I usually get mine from amazon because it’s a tiny bit cheaper and I can get free shipping. Jerry’s has the biggest selection of sizes, though. The alcohol you are probably going to struggle to find for a while thanks to COVID-19. I order my 99% from Amazon, but you just have to get lucky and look on the right day to find any on there. I was trying to post it for people when I found it, but it was selling out almost immediately so I just gave up lol. I ran across some 91% in the grocery store here a few weeks ago. I think they must have just stocked it lol. I grabbed a couple of bottles while I could. I will be doing a giveaway in the next couple of weeks and one bottle will be part of one of the prizes so keep an eye out on the next couple of videos to see how to enter and when it will be! I feel your pain with the moving lol. We are finally settled in here in WA, but I really miss the NC mountains like crazy. We are hoping to get to move back to NC in another year and a half or so. Good luck with your move! I hope everything goes smoothly for you! Let me know if you have any other questions 😃💜💜

      Lorrie, I live in CO and we're moving to NM. I'm NOT at all excited about my move. I just didn't tell you, I was hacked last yr so I'm super careful about everything, but that person already got our address so it doesn't matter. My ex husband has relatives in WA and I have relatives in NC. I LOVE the Carolina's. You made a long move. I hope you get to move back. My ancestors all settled in NC. for a few centuries and then ventured out to,KY TN and SE MO. In 2 of those states they were the first pioneers. They were tough people. Lets just say I'm happy I was born in the century I was,(in the late 1950's) because I LOVE my baths, showers, and bed, along with electricity, and being able to buy my soap and doing laundry in my washer and dryer and TV, esp the COMPUTER! lol Besides art and creating, I'm really into Ancestry now that I'm older. I'm happy you gave this talk on this kind of alcohol. People just don't know how harmful it can be, so THANK YOU. I wish we knew each other because I have a hunch we'd get along fantastically. I forget what I'm saying to. It's like I have a pet hamster going round and around on his wheel, in my brain, and I go from one subject to the other or forget what I was saying. You don't do both of those, but I DO and I feel horrible about it. It's like if I tied a string around my finger I'd forget what the string was for! ;( I do sometimes have notes for my notes! lol I was a porcelain doll maker for yrs, then did cards, scrapbooking, and can make just about anything if I can see it. I'm learning from You about alcohol ink art and Resin Art from you and various other artists, and I'm SO thankful for you tube and artists such as yourself.
      I do have half a bottle of 91% Alcohol and I will be on the lookout as much as I can. I don't think we will be able to get it while the Pandemic is here, and since I'm disabled and high risk I CAN'T really afford to go out. IF you know of another artist that might be willing to sell me a bottle I will pay for it and the shipping. Just email me, please. I'm just asking in the small CASE that you do know someone. Thank you Lorrie. Keep on doing what your doing! CONGRATS on your 5,000! I know you'll be at 10k and 15k before you know it! I'm happy for you! Blessings and stay safe!

      Victoria Ciolek I hate to hear that about you getting hacked. My husband somehow had all his info, including social security number, accessed or stolen somehow a few years ago. Someone even filed taxes using his name and ss#. I know how worrisome those things can be. I’m sorry you are dreading your move so much. I totally felt the same way when I found out we were going to have to move all the way to WA for at least a couple of years. At least I can look forward to going back to NC eventually. Lol My family started out in KY and a few migrated out to TN, NC, and AL. I wish I knew someone who had some extra alcohol for you right now! I get messages everyday from people wanting to know where they can find some, but I’m in the same boat once I run out. Even other artists I know who do alcohol inks are switching to watercolors or just using a brush to paint with so they don’t need alcohol. Be sure you enter my giveaway if you haven’t (I think you did, but I have answered so many comments today that I am completely brain dead now, plus it’s 11:10 pm which is about an hour past my bedtime lol). I was able to get an extra bottle out of shear luck at the grocery store and it’s part of the giveaway. Thank you so much for the congratulations and the well wishes! Stay safe and healthy! 💜💜

      @@LorrieBrewerAwwhh Lorrie, I didn't want ANY Alcohol from you. I should have made that clear. I want you to save yours so you can continue to make Video's. I'm going to call my local Medical Supply place on Monday to see if they ever get it in, or ask my pharmacist to be on the lookout for some and grab a bottle for me, when they get some in. I just have NEVER seen the 99%. I asked you in another video (I've been on a Lorrie Brewer binge tonight, lol) if using 91% is OK because I was having problems with Yupo and 91%. It could have been because my inks are a few yrs old or something else.
      Yeah, getting hacked is the pits, however they weren't getting much with me. I'm disabled and I don't have much money in my acct (my acct is mainly for crafts and to pay for my Medicare and 2nd ins) but it sucks. It's scary to. I'm glad my husband is home and not traveling home every 2-3 wkends. I HATE change and I HATE moving. I was a military brat and my ex and I moved until the kids were in 1st Grade. Then I said, I'm done! Well I was and now I'm remarried and have about 45+ yrs worth of stuff to pack and take with. I don't think we're moving back and that is what has me so upset. Hubby said he'd buy me a brand new home, but in Santa Fe with the type we have now, with the SQ footage, it would be about $1million or a few hundred thousand less. I DON'T want to go into more debt, so who knows where we're going and when. I wanted to go smaller and less money. Unfort. it doesn't work that way there. Fortunately it's not far from CO (8 hrs) so I can see my kids and grandsons. I just want it to be over with, ya know? We'll figure it out. Oh and yes, I want to sign up or in for your drawing. How many times can we do it? 1x I am hoping for your sake. Just take care. It's 2:20 am here and I will be going to be in about 20 mins. Take care and keep making video's Blessings~

      😃 Hopefully, you’ve seen the answer to your question about 91% by now, but just in case, yes the 91% is just as good as the 99%, except you might see a tiny bit more water beading with it. I only used 91% for a long time when I started and that is what I am using in many of my earlier videos. I know exactly what you mean about just wanting the move over with. It’s so hard to start somewhere new, but the packing up and dreading it are worse than the settling in. I still miss my NC mountains and all our family there, but at least I can look forward to going back there within another year or two (hopefully). As for the giveaway, you can only enter once. Lol I’m struggling to keep up with one entry per person. I’d never make it with more than one lol. I can’t remember now if you already told me, but I just need to know what to put your name in for, a painting or supplies. I have looked at so many entries today that I can’t remember whose I have seen already, so if you already told me then I have it down, otherwise let me know before May 25. 😃💜💜

      😂 No, easy wasn't a word I would ever have used when I started out. I still have times that I struggle to turn out a painting that I am happy with lol. Don't ever feel like you aren't getting anywhere because you aren't happy with every painting you paint, or because they take you a while. I don't care who the artist is or how long they've been doing it, every single one still has bad paint days where nothing seems to come easy and we can't turn out a decent painting to save our lives! Lol We just don't share too many of those or no one would watch our videos 🤣! Feel free to reach out to me if you are struggling with something and maybe I can give you a tip or two to help out 💜💜

    All of my mixatives, the metalics and pearls, tend to form a clump right where they're dropped on yupo, and they don't want to move or spread around, even when I add 99% alcohol. Is this something wrong with my inks? Are they old?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, yours inks are probably fine. Most of the mixatives and all the pearls I have tried just won’t work with alcohol. You need to use blending solution with them, and even then they don’t tend to move nearly as much as regular inks. That is why I use the Piñata brass by Jacquard. In my opinion, it is the one that works the best with alcohol.

    Lovely work, is there a difference between using a blow dryer, or a heat gun???

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The only difference is the heat. I use the cool setting on my dryer to keep from warping the paper. Some people do use heat guns on the lowest heat setting, but mine was still warping it like that. I also like the extra working time I get before the ink dries with the cooler air from my dryer.

    Do u like the yupo or grafix better. What is the difference. Which is better for a novice?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like both, but the Grafix or NARA is definitely easier to work with, especially when you are starting out. The yupo will stain which makes it much harder to “erase” a spot. It seems to absorb certain shades out of your ink with that staining which causes the ink to change colors somewhat. I did a video (18) showing what you can do with the Ranger color eggplant on yupo. It might interest you just to see what I mean. I love using yupo when I want that under-color the staining causes, though. It really seems to add some depth and interest to a painting sometimes. It took me more practice to learn to get results I liked with it, though. It was hard for me to learn how to not push too much of the ink back towards the middle and only leave the stain on the outer edges. Maybe that was just me, though lol. I would recommend practicing with both to see which you prefer. The Grafix opaque white craft plastic is cheaper than yupo if you buy it in the 25 sheet packs, it wipes clean with alcohol if you don’t like what you did, and the inks move great on it so I would say use it the most, but play around with the yupo some, too. Check Joggles.com for the Grafix. They usually have the 25 packs in 9x12 and 12x12. Grafix Dura-Bright is great, too, but a little higher than the craft plastic. The backside of Office Depot inkjet glossy photo paper is great for practicing and a cheaper option per sheet. Make sure you use the backside, the inks won’t move on the glossy side. I just get the standard, not premium, and the inks move almost exactly the same as on synthetic art papers. I hope this helps some! I sort of ran on in my answer lol. Sorry about that! It’s hard for me to not over explain sometimes lol.

    I just got my alcohol inks tonight, and I was so excited to jump right in. I was OVERWHELMED by the smell of the isopropyl. I live in a small, not really well ventilated apartment, so the only thing I could do to dispel the odor was drag out my air filter. It took more than an hour for the smell to go away. If I had seen this video before I opened them. I would have returned the inks and tried something else. Now I'm stuck with them, and no way to actually use them. :(
    This is BEAUTIFUL though!

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sooo sorry to hear that! You definitely do need a well ventilated place or a respirator with P100 filters on it. There are ways you can use your inks without having to add much, or any, alcohol to them. You just can’t get the really soft, wispy look without using isopropyl alcohol or blending solution. The blending solution might be something you would want to try. It has a scent, but it’s nothing like the isopropyl. You should try dabbing the inks onto glass or ceramics (like vases, etc. that you can pick up at the dollar store or thrift shops). You can make some very beautiful items this way and it will give you a way to use your ink if you don’t want to invest in or use a respirator.

      @@LorrieBrewer thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, it's not just the alcohol, but the smell of the inks themselves that I can't tolerate. I completely understand. If I didn’t have a very well ventilated space I doubt I could tolerate the smell either. My respirator blocks the smell, but I don’t use it if I don’t have to (although I probably should use it all the time). I wish I had a solution for you other than another purchase to get a respirator and good filters. They can get really expensive. You might be able to sell your inks on a Facebook alcohol ink group if you really want to get rid of them. I have seen others that have done that. I hope you find a good outlet for your creativity soon!

      😃 The piñata brass moves in a whole different way than the gold. Bits of the brass will sort of float to the top of the ink and give you those veins of gold color instead of sinking to the bottom and not wanting to move like the gold does. 💜💜

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a few layers of Kamar by Krylon, then a few layers of UV Archival by Krylon. Some people don’t use both, but I prefer to make sure they have as much UV protection as possible since inks will fade quickly if not protected good. The Kamar won’t reactivate your inks like some spray varnishes will so I always start with it once I am sure my paintings are completely dry. I recommend waiting at least a couple of days or more before you start sealing them.

      I really don’t know. I have never used calligraphy ink for anything, including calligraphy lol. Some inks will not move with alcohol so you might just have to test a drop or two of it with some isopropyl (91% or higher) to see if it will spread and give you the wispy edges. • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You do have to seal it or it can be damaged very easily. I use several light coats of spray varnish - first I use a few coats of Kamar varnish by Krylon, then several light coats of UV Archival varnish (also by Krylon). I use the Kamar first to seal the inks so they won't reactivate, then the UV Archival to help prevent the inks from fading so quickly since they are not UV stable. Make sure you let each layer of varnish dry completely before you add another layer, and always make sure your painting has had a few days to make sure it's completely dry. Once sealed, you can mat and frame, just frame, mount on cradle board, mount then resin, pretty much any way you want to display it once you seal it! 😀💜

    Just wanted to let you know I think I found the issue with the piñata brass Incase anyone else is looking for an answer. Turns out the one I ordered from Amazon was either a defective bottle or a dupe. When sitting for a long time you could see the glitter would settle and the remainder of the liquid was blue. So if anyone else has that problem and their brass isn’t working correctly, maybe order from a different distributor ♥️🥰

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish that were the answer, but it has always separated like that when it sits for a while. Mine does that all the time. That’s why you’ll see me shake my applicator bottle nearly every time before I use it. My best guess is just a mix up with the ratios at the plant. Hopefully, any bad batches of it will be gone soon.

    Hello! I’m new to alcohol inks and I looooove your work. I bought piñata brass after watching this video. But I cannot get it to stick together and go to the top like you do. Mine spreads apart and sinks to the bottom. Would you have any suggestions?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the compliment! I actually mentioned the issue with the brass in a video I just posted today (number 101). Several people have asked me about this, but I don't know what is going on with it. My best guesses are a bad mix at from the maker, or it could be overworking the brass with your inks. One subscriber told me they had called Jacquard and were told they had not changed their formula any, so it has to be something else. I haven't gotten a bottle recently so I haven't been having any trouble with mine to know if it's an issue with the brass itself or not. Be careful not to overwork it though. It will eventually blend with your ink colors and just leave you a slightly thick pearlish or metallic looking color of whatever your ink color is. Be sure you don't use too much of it either. It moves much better when you just use a drop per puddle of ink/alcohol. I think too much of the brass at one time weights its self down and it can't float and move good. I don't know if any of this helps, but I hope so! You are definitely not alone in your issues with it. If I ever find out a definitive answer I will be sure to let everyone know.

      I had a few of mine that did that. I tried putting some alcohol in the bottles, but it never would all reconstitute so I ended up just throwing them away and buying some new of those colors. I may not have given it enough time, though. Luckily mine weren’t all like that. I hope you don’t have to start over with buying all new ones if you are starting up your painting again. I’d see what happens with some alcohol in yours before you toss them. Give it a day or two of soaking up the alcohol and shake them fairly often to loosen things up. That might work better than what I did. I didn’t even give it a full day before I got frustrated because I needed to pack them up to travel lol. Good luck!

    This kind of painting makes me think a lot of how you blend watercolors, but far more organic and with a random element to it.

      Thank you for the compliment! You can use the backside of glossy photo paper instead of the more expensive art papers. I generally use Office Depot brand or Kirkland brand (from Costco). I have also heard Staples brand works well for this, too. I still use these when I am practicing new techniques because of the cost of the synthetic art papers. Grafix opaque white craft plastic is a little higher than photo paper, but cheaper than yupo and it won’t stain like yupo does. www.joggles.com has a 25 sheet pack of the Grafix in a couple of different sizes and is usually the cheapest place to get it. They also have smaller packs of it, not to mention lots of other great arts and craft supplies, including alcohol inks in a few different brands. If you use photo paper make sure you only use the back, not the glossy front side. The inks won’t move on the glossy side. I hope this helps you some! Thank you for watching! 😊💜

      @@LorrieBrewer 🦋 You absolutely gave me the best advice. I appreciate it so much. I've been making handmade journals for four years but through Tim Holtz have recently become very excited about the alcohol ink art. I am retired and have a craft studio, I'm just venturing a tiptoe at a time into mixed media. I am loving it. I thought my brain was half dead but now I am so excited because of what I'm learning through TH-cam. Hopefully one day I can create beautiful things as masterfully as you do. My eyes aren't as good anymore and my hands aren't as strong but I believe that God will enable me to follow my heart's desire. 🌹♥️

      One of the great things about abstract painting with alcohol ink is that your eyes don’t have to be perfect (I have to wear glasses when I paint) and you can manage it even with arthritis or weaker hands (I have arthritis, especially in my hands and fingers). This is a wonderful art form to learn and can be very relaxing if you don’t let yourself get frustrated when things aren’t going exactly the way you want them to on your paper. The inks have a mind of their own sometimes and I have just learned to go with what the ink wants, not necessarily what I want lol. I hope you enjoy your new paths in art with all the ideas you can try from TH-cam. It is a wonderful place to learn and get new ideas! 💜💜

      Also, I fully believe God will help you and guide you to what you what you want to do, even if you don’t yet know for sure what that is. He certainly has for me in leading me to this art form that I didn’t even know existed a couple of years ago! 😊💜

    Is Pinata brass better than rich gold?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer the Pinata brass for the type of painting I do. The rich gold is a beautiful color, but I just can't get it to move the way the Pinata brass does. That's just my personal experience with it. I would recommend trying both to see which one you prefer. I use my rich gold for embellishing paintings that I didn't use a metallic in while painting. That way, it's not a waste for me to have bought it lol. I hope this helps! 💜😊

    Is this denatured alcohol? MG Chemicals 824 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol Electronics Cleaner, 15.9 oz Aerosol Spray. I will be trying alcohol ink for the first time but i cant find any 99% Isopropyl. Let me know.

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      marie maurasse It is not denatured alcohol, but I don’t know anything else about it. I have never used an aerosol alcohol spray. I would recommend using a respirator with that because if it’s aerosol you are going to be breathing a lot more of it than when using just the liquid. You might try taking it outside and spraying it into some type of container that has a lid so it won’t evaporate. That way you aren’t breathing so much of it while you’re painting. Before you use it, read the ingredients and see if it has anything other than isopropyl alcohol in it, too. I have never used anything like that so I don’t know if there are other additives or not. Look up the MDS online for that product if the ingredients aren’t listed. It will tell you everything that’s in it and if it’s toxic in any way.

      Thank you very much! I use a 500 watt Revlon brand styling brush dryer with a cool setting with the brush attachment removed. If you are not in the US, you may not be able to find this particular one. Many people from other countries have been unable to find it. Just look for one with low wattage (the lower the better, not higher than 500 watts), a cool setting, and removable attachments. One like that will work just as well as mine does. I will put the U.S. Amazon link to the Revlon that I use in case you are in the US and want to order one. 💜💜 amzn.to/3tljeBH

    What a beautiful work of art! I am wanting to learn more about alcohol ink art and came across your video! I will be watching much more from your channel! Quick question, when you say you are going to seal with resin, do you mean you will mount the paper on a board and pour art resin over it to make it shiny? Also, at the end of the video with your q-tip, are you using alcohol to remove any mistakes? And do you like the white craft plastic over yupo paper? Thank you!

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sel Hoang 💜 Thank you very much! I do my resining exactly like you said. I use gel medium or mod podge to attach it to a board or cradle board, then pour resin over it once it is dry good. The q-tip is to get little spots of ink that may have dripped or splattered a little into my negative space, or sometimes I push the gold out too far and it leaves a line in the white that I don’t think looks good so I erase it. I usually prefer the Grafix or NARA brand synthetic paper, but I like yupo as well. Sometimes I want the staining that happens with yupo, but sometimes I don’t. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! 😃💜

    Which setting do you use on your air tool? Also do your inks and brass have alcohol already mixed in?

    • @LorrieBrewer
      @LorrieBrewer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my hairdryer on the cool setting almost all the time. I only switch it over to a heat setting for just a few seconds in I need to dry a section more quickly. I do not add anything to my inks or the brass before I put them on the paper. You can do that if you want to dilute your color a little bit, I just never do. 💜💜
