    The labeled runway and taxiway diagram is sooooooooooo much help in understanding the comms. Also highlighting the plane or vehicle on the radio is even more help. Please continue these practices.

      @@agntxx Because of the change in runway length, pilots have to recalculate the max takeoff weight, V1 (no abort velocity), Vr (rotate velocity) and V2 (safe climb velocity). They may also have to plan for a different departure corridor if there is one.
      Not a pilot. Anyone correct me if I missed something.

      Shorter runway s they have t calculate the different speed fr when they MUST take off because they d not have enough runway to stop.
      also they have to calculate if they can even get off the ground on the shorter runway. "density altitude" can make you really need that extra length.

      @@The_JEB I worked with some of the crews from Atlanta Fire Rescue only it was Atlanta Fire Department at the time back in the 90s at Hartsfield as a security officer assigned to one of the support facilities away from the terminal. Even then when you got on the radio and listened you could definitely tell the difference between them and everyone else on radio. Some of the coolest and most professional public safety personnel that I ever had the honor to work with.

      That is correct. ATL is Delta's largest hub, and to stop confusion between the Delta Airlines callsign and the taxiway Delta, they use Dixie instead.

      @@YoDay We do use India for I. But I can't even think of an airport with a India taxiway. If there are airports with an India taxiway, I'd assume that would still use it as the amounts of Air India flights into the US is a lot lower than the Delta Airlines flights into KATL. Also, KATL is the only airport to use "Dixie" instead of Delta in the US (From my knowledge at least), due to the mass amounts of Delta Airlines traffic in and out of there.

      It's because ATL is the main Delta hub; there are so many Delta callsigns that they don't want to confuse it with the D taxiway.

    I would love to hear the AFRD (ARFF) radio traffic as well. It seems the incidents at ATL all run very smoothly but we only hear the ATC radio traffic. I think the stations numbers there for AFRD are 24, 32, 33, 35, and 40 but the ARFF radio identifiers are not the same (ARFF-10, et al). Are the stations at ATL dispatched by AFRD or by a separate center at the airport?

    It should be mandatory that ground halt all aircraft and give ARFF clearance to all runways and taxiways.

      Gregory W It’s not always that simple. Atlanta is one of the busiest airports in the entire world and the airspace around it is incredibly congested. All the planes trying to land have to go around and be put in holding patterns without hitting other planes also entering holding patterns.

      @@JNDlego57 Those are certainly valid points and I was not there to see the severity of the fire. Every time I listen to an aircraft ground emergency there seems to be confusion between the ARFF vehicles and ground controller. The ground emergency must take precedence over all aircraft movements.

      In our ramp vehicle training at the two airports I'm allowed to drive at, we are taught that aircraft have the right of way at all times, followed by emergency equipment then mobile lounges. Aircraft cannot (safely) stop on a dime nor get moving again quickly so it's best to let them go their merry way and wait for them to pass. Also, to halt all aircraft would require the controller to call each individual aircraft and issue orders to halt, that would be very time consuming and would clog the radio with more traffic than would be necessary.

      @@StephenCole1916 You also make some good points and I couldn't argue with your training, but you have an emergency on the field. The ground controller could tell all aircraft on their frequency to hold position. Again I was not there and did not see the severity of the fire. If they would have evacuated then there is no question that all aircraft must stop. I say stop all aircraft until ARFF is on the field. The ground controller knows exactly where the fire stations are and what route they are taking. China Air 120 was a classic example of ground control/ ARFF confusion.

    When you listen to this you realize why ATL has the reputation that does when it comes to ground operations , they may be busy they may be fast they may be crowded but they know how to get the job done to do whatever it takes to keep their traffic moving , and their passengers safe.
    If you listen to the order in which everything was being said it's almost like they're reading off a script not absolutely perfect but extremely close.
    If you watch the timestamp line of this event it is almost as if Fire Rescue and Ops 1 were sitting there waiting for this to happen from the speed of the response.
    They made my airport look good

    I'm curious at what point, with a fire under a wing, does the pilot decide to evacuate the aircraft.

      An evacuation can be more hazardous to the pax than a simple brake fire. Aircraft manufactures test fire in these situations before aircraft are certified. This actually occurs more often than many may think. It is not a catastrophic event and therefore should be best mitigated by keeping the pax contained in the aircraft so FF can get in quickly and eliminate the threat. Think about what happens if you get 200 people running around an airfield while fire is responding. The Asiana death of a pax at SFO is a perfect example.

      With a fire on the tires that is not getting too big, I wouldn't evacuate. You don't want your passengers anywhere near the tires. When tires are on fire, services approach from the front or rear. If tires explode, they will fly off to the sides. Now imagine you have people on the sides of the airplane...

      Best keep pax onboard in this case. If its an uncontained fuel fed fire you would evac on the opposite side.

      Officially they should have evacuated. Anytime your plane is on fire you’re supposed to evacuate any door other than the fire area. I doubt anyone would get in trouble tho as nobody was hurt by staying.

      Rubber can burn for awhile before it fails in a blowout. The tire and brake assembly probably still looked intact after they had extinguished the fire and upon inspection... No need to order a FOD search if nothing was missing...

      Ok... This video is practically going by an artist's rendition of ATC audio, so ...it could possibly have been the brakes that caught on fire, not the tire. They are in the same proximity to each other, so that's technically what's going to get called out, but there is high probability that tire didn't explode. The fire also was reported getting smaller as they waited for help to arrive... Unlikely to happen if rubber caught fire.
      Could it be possible they closed 9L temporarily out of precaution so fire trucks could cross safely? That is OPs vehicle's call, since there were several planes standing by to take off nearby... I will admit, I don't know if that's is or against procedure. 9L was reopened after all emergency vehicles were across...
      Then, the responding fire truck inspecting the tires would have alerted atc and the pilots of a possible ruptured tire, broken brake calipers, etc., which would have prompted a FOD search of 9R, but they didn't. The plane was towed.
      Had 9R been operating for departures instead, maybe that would have been a different story, again procedure stuff. And it wasn't clear if there were any more possible arrivals landing after those last two planes on 9R at that moment (again, going off the artist rendition that showed another plane pulling off of 9R afterwards, that also witnessed the incident, but didn't report anything else out of sorts with the runway, like tire shrapnel).

    It just struck me. That controller is focused on one thing only. Why? Cause he told his partner to take care of the rest. And that guy told other controllers to take care of the rest. They all trust the craftsmanship of everyone in the chain. I really regret missing out on this job.

      @@Dogfood130 eh pilots are farther away from the engines of their aircraft plus cockpits are pretty soundproof. That and pilots are wearing headsets which makes it easy to hear therefore you speak at a normal level. That ARFF guy was probably using a handheld radio

      A lot of fire crews wear headphones these days, if they are not David Clark’s they should be. Communication equipment should be tailored to their airport environment. A little more training on proper phraseology and radio techniques might be a good idea too.

    Very late to the party here. I echo all the great comments about ARFF 10's voice. Pretty sure he is on some of the other videos. Hope he has gone on or will go on to be Chief if he wants to. And what a nightmare, even briefly, it must be for a huge airport like this to lose two runways. But obviously attention on the fire is the absolute priority. Glad it turned out to be minor with no injuries.

      Margaret Mathis ARFF 10 was calling permission cross with one additional vehicle.
      Its easier for all involved than multiple vehicles all calling at once at the same crossing point.
      You can only do it if you are at the same point.

    Fire chief and OPS1 never confirmed they were cleared from runway 9L, yet OPS1 did give the OK to open it.
    Is that the correct procedure?

      In this case, most likely just used a tire dolly under the affected gear. Fairly common. But if a gear collapse, then crane, lifting jacks, etc. depending on the damage.

    I know that this might be an unrealistic expectation, but to be the very best, sometimes it's a good idea to set goals that seem impossible to achieve. Somehow, perhaps by implementing smaller more numerous fire brigades, there should be a maximum "on scene" arrival time to an active fire. There are timed evacuation drills, and associated requirements, and IMO, fire response should be no different. Five to six minutes isn't reasonable. Even half that is too long, when hundreds of lives could be at risk. Airport fire and rescue services should consider collaborating with NASCAR for a readiness plan that could have teams on location much more quickly. Yes, probably a crazy idea, but not necessarily a bad one. 😃

      ARFF vehicles must be anywhere within airport limits in a maximum of 3 minutes. The bigger the airport, the more stations there will be. Whatever to accomplish 3 minutes since called out.

      @@TheRealMarkS also keep in mind the clearance angles and areas for radio equipment and runways.
      You can't plop down a fire station anywhere.
      And even if every runway has a fire station. They still have to get to the trucks, start em up (usually with a hit start button) get in, check for the location of the emergency and drive there.

      There's a reason runways cannot be entered without specific permission from the controller. ARFF just coming onto frequency does not have situational awareness. The controller does.

      Here's the deal. Once any ground vehicle is preparing to cross a taxiway or a runway radio contact is made with the tower. You saw how fast 9L reopened and departures commenced. You never cross until explicit instructions are given.

      krabbi it’s a design group VI aircraft. And per our modification to standard with the FAA, all design group VI aircraft need to have their wingtip escorted by OPS in 2 different locations on the airport. It’s really for the 380 but we do it for both

    Wow, that was hard to listen too. The Ops lady needs to learn HOW to talk on the radio! Tower missed the wrong freq being read back. The plane on a 1 mile final better be going around if I'm on fire, while a fire truck is waiting to cross.

      It sounds like the emergency got less severe over time. At 3:17 tower says the fire is a lot lower. They only coordinate a frequency change after that. If, on the other hand, the emergency had gotten more severe, I imagine they would have all stayed on tower frequency to avoid spending any time at all on a frequency change.

    Not real impressed with Airport Operations. Keeping 09R open, forcing fire equipment to hold for landing traffic was a mistake, plus the runway should have been checked for FOD before anyone did land on it.

      Sounded like some data transmission. Maybe radio interference or something. Could be at the listeners side only (where they 'tap' the air for LiveATC - usually some private ner...ehm...person that is very interested in flight and radio that has a receiver that records everything, and they can be quite far away.
