    The sheer sorrow and sadness of the Coroner at the 48 minute mark when he looks directly into the camera and you feel he's staring you in the eye's was extremely heartbreaking and impossible to not shed a tear in my case anyway. I hope everyone who was affected by this terrible tragedy was able to continue on with life and hopefully found peace and strength in one way or another 🙏

    Taking off from and landing on the wrong runway is easy. Just because you hear about it after people died and you have a keyboard attached to a computer does not make you an airline accident expert. This has happened in the military and civilian world as well. The combination of Men and Machines is not fault proof.

    • @jogman262

      @Valerie Rodger Then why did they carelessly disregard verifying their compass heading to make sure they were on the right runway? Even more obvious, you would think an unlit runway would give you some clue something is not right. Total pilot error.

  • @georgehunt6381
    @georgehunt6381 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Pilot error, no doubt, no one else. They were the ones that turned on the wrong runway. They were told 22, they turned on 26. The runway was dark, no lights, they made those comments and STILL continued to takeoff.

  • @42stearman
    @42stearman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It seems to me that he turned onto 26 from the hold short the same as he would from the 22 hold short line that was being worked on. The turn is almost identical to what he was used to if he was familiar with departing this airport. A momentary mental lapse of awareness. Doing the familiar turn would probably explain not checking the heading.

    Runways are numbered according to their compass heading, 22 is pointing towards 220 degrees, runway 26 is 260 degrees, runway 04 is 40 degrees etc. What’s damning is a student pilot on their first day is told to check their compass to make sure they’re lined up on the correct runway before taking off. It’s as simple as that. Sorry

    Are you kidding me?? Did she just say “there would be no moment where we could point to one thing to say Ah ha, that is what caused this accident?” How about that one moment in time when the flight crew took off on the wrong damn runway!! That one action DID cause this accident. Trying to dance around the idea that the pilots were not the only ones to blame is ridiculous. They weren’t paying attention and took off on the wrong runway. End of story!

      @@NickyD Even if the pilots had maintained sterile cockpit procedures, there is still a chance of the pilots taking off from the wrong runway, especially in low light conditions. Plus, it was not the first time that it happened at the same airport - in 1993, a jet attempted to take off from Runway 26 instead of Runway 22, but was stopped by attentive ATC personnel. The crazier thing is the fact that 5 months after the accident, ANOTHER jet tried to take off from Runway 26 instead of Runway 22, only to be stopped by ATC.
      Just goes to show that sometimes it's not as simple as you think it is.

    There has to be a navigation feature from the gate as the starting point to the runway as the destination. This needs to be punched in and confirmed by both the pilots. Follow that onscreen navigation while visually confirming out the window. The tower controller should focus on the aircraft that’s going to take off and must be able to tell which runway the aircraft is on. Have multiple confirmations through technology and with the naked eye to make sure that the aircraft is at the correct place, on the correct runway.
    Make crashes such as this an impossibility.

    its clear that the investigators were not going to let the airport take responsibility for anything. The flight crew were responsible and perhaps the controller...but hang on folks dont shed the entire blame on them...there is a very important factor..if the airport runways changed in any shape or form it is of grave importance that the flight crew are made aware prior to any flight...so that mistakes such as these can be avoided. I am not suggesting that they had signs that were not recognised but these are split second decisons ..the airport should have made them aware and then before take off clarified the alterations...however it is not the controllers responsibility but the manager/ceo or other who were at this time happily sleeping in their highly expensive bed while others slave for noting and take the burden...its all irrelevant 49 people lost their lives and now ..it seems for all of you the only focus ...the sole survivor. One word of advice before you call people names and thrash about pointless accusations ..your words have meaning to some and the consequences can be dire

  • @ultrametric9317

    What a pile of nonsense. Both pilots failed to notice that there were no runway lights. The problem has nothing to do with runways and flying - it has to do with boredom and routine and struggle. Regional pilots are paid for shit, they start out making what burger flippers make, if even that. They work incredibly long hours for bread crumbs. And the work itself is mind-numbing - there is no real flying involved. They punch buttons in the flight management computer and watch. They should have been watching more carefully. I feel bad for Mrs. Gray but her husband was in charge and he screwed up in the worst imaginable way, and it had nothing to do with drugs or background checks or past experience. It had to do with being bored out of his tired mind, bored to the point that he didn't bother to look out the front window at the runway in front of him.

    Call it a shitty way to look at it, but honestly it should be looked at as manslaughter.
    Even in an accident, I know if it is deemed absolute negligence even in an automobile-if I drove down the wrong way of a road and kill a family I go to prison.
    Whether the airport was under construction or not-it was both pilots duty to know everything about the takeoff-flight-landing, every single aspect. It’s what they are paid to do!
    47 civilians and 1 crew member (other pilot) but, 47 people that are absolutely in the hands of the pilots. Regardless of injuries or what not, the co-pilot can still talk to his loved ones thru prison glass, the people he killed don’t quite get that luxury.

    Airport should have clear signs in place. So, they were responsible. Even without those signs, the pilots should not turn on to the wrong runway. So, they were responsible. Every runway should have runway number written on it every 500 feet. How much extra money would that cost? Do everything you can to prevent a crash. Airport was very much responsible for this crash or the prevailing practices were responsible. So, of course, the FAA and government were responsible for this along with the pilots.

    The truth hurts lady. Your husband WAS an idiot and so was the co-pilot. The victims are the ones suffering for the pilots stupidity!! I guess they missed the whole “sterile cockpit” class. I like how this newscast makes it seem like Lexington Kentucky is doomed and scarred for a lifetime. That may have been the case in 2007 through 2008 but this is ten years later and people here have pretty much forgotten. It’s not bad thing it just means life goes on. The victims families and the people who were immediately affected by this crash are the ones who will never forget. For the rest of us time continues.

Maybe the updates were not inserted yet, but read backs were correct. If there was confusion, they could have re-verified. Very sad situation
