Restoration of a rusty Breitling Colt Ocean automatic watch - water damaged Breitling B17 service
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ก.พ. 2025
- This time I´m restoring a Breitling Colt Ocean Automatic Watch.
It´s powered by the Breitling B17, a modified ETA 2824-2 automatic movement. It beats at 28800bph, the lift angle of the balance is at 52° and it has a power reserve of 42 hours. The reference number of this watch is A17350 and it´s chronometer-certified.
This watch is water resistant up to 500 meters (1650 feet)... well ... at least you are able to lock-down the crown. The previous owner of the watch didn´t lock the crown before this watch had it´s last diving session. Water has penetrated the watch, the watch stoppped from running and it has been thrown in the most behind drawer. Bad idea.... of course this watch has gained a lot of rust over several months until it find it´s way on my desk.
I need to clean everything and remove the rust where it´s possible. I´ve never used a rust-remover on a watch movement ... until now. Some parts of the movement needs to be replaced. I also replaced the glass, re-painted the bezel and polished everything where it´s needed.
After everything is cleaned, polished and re-painted, I can re-assemble the movement with some fresh oil. After that, this watch is in a fantastic beat (+0 seconds per day) again.
I hope you liked this restoration, if so, like, comment and subscribe ;)

... no boring music, no superfluous explanations, just good framing, crisp and precise. I have never seen such a video .We don't see the time passing, watching it! Congratulations from France buddy!
So i'm late to this party, but your work is nothing short of amazing. Being a Breitling fan, and saving for one, makes me appreciate the your work even more so. Love the looks of a Colt.
I'm so envious of people who can do stuff like this without getting frustrated and then throwing it against a wall.
😂😂😂
Xxaxaxxaxaxaxaxaxaaxxaaxax :D
That's a skilled work right there. Specialized in complex watch mechanisms.
Makes for a lot of messy walls😊
Son. No master will break the work of his own hands
I am speechless..... I am into heavy construction and Powe generation...... We ain't seen nothing yet until wee see this....... Well done.... I take my hat off to people that bring a minute watch back to life..
That 80's game scene is brilliant :D
What a fine excellent craftmanship you've showned us.
I thought that was a cool touch too!!
This video has such a calming effect over me. Watchmakers must live forever.
Like master jewelers, I am sure it is a fading art. The machines are taking over lol
You make watch restoration look easy. That’s the sign of a true professional.
@Hamza Farooq I do too. There are some things that are just odd.
Montium how so?
Montium please elaborate
@@Mark-sd7fc He only resotored easy movements so far. He sticks the lever in Rodico and lubricates the entry and the exit pallet. You dont do this like that at all. Speaking of lubrication: He lubricates the movement like someone who read the assembly drawing and knows where to put lubricant (in theory), but did not learn how to lubricate a watch properly. He mostly uses tools, machinery and substances that you can buy on ebay or in your local hardware store, while most watchmakers buy their stuff from specialist dealers (you can easily spot those things if you know how those things look). He uses a dremel-tool to polish. Watchmakers are using polishing lathes because its quicker and more evenly. He changes the finish on some parts like the bezel from matted to glossy. You just dont do that. Sure, it wont hurt the watch in terms of function, but you just dont do it. Especially when its a old watch. One really bad thing was when he pressed the hands back on, using a assembly pad as an underlay. Beause that can really destroy the balance wheel pivots. But luckily the changed that. There are some more hints but i think thats enough. He seemes like he started it as a hobby and reads himself into the topic. Which is completley fine for me, dont get me wrong. Heck, id even like to give him some advice if he needs any. The only thing thats bugging me is the praise he gets in the comments (he can do nothing about that, im aware of that). I know it looks really complicated to restore a watch and most people dont have any knowledge on this topic. But seeing that is called masterfully, while being a actual master watchmaker, just upset me a little.
I see that he makes progress and I hope he wont stagnate, but he still got things to learn.
@@Ravel146 You are right, in the past I lubricated the exit and the entry pallet. But as you can see in the videos I've changed that because someone pointed me on that mistake. What's wrong with buying tools on eBay instead of expensive specialist tools? They are doing the job. Pretty well in my opinion. Polishing with a dremel or lathe: I think this is something of a personal preference. At the end both tools just turn around a cotton piece with some polishing compound. In my opinion those small dremel-swabs are giving me more control of where I polish. Bezel from matted to glossy? I've taped the bezel to protect it and only used some nevr dull. That's more a cleaning than a polishing. The surface is untouched. But maybe you are referring to the first Breitling video. Hand-Setting on the cushion case, yes that was bad, I need to get the proper movement holders for all those movements.
I'm always thankful to any advice and feedback. I'm just a hobbiest and I have still much to learn for sure 😉
PS: No offense ✌🏻
The ultrasonic parts watching the dirt and rust removed has to be one of the highlights of each video. Thanks for the great videos. Having an apprenticeship when I was in high school working on watches, seeing this brings me a lot of joy.
I own a Breitling and watching this guy remove all those parts from the movement made me nervous. He’s a true master at his craft.
I agree. I have a Breitling Super Avenger that my wife says can be seen from the Moon! Had no idea how many tiny parts are inside. Probably be a bit more gentle with it.
Any psychologist should prescribe this Chanel for relaxation purpose it’s absolutely awesome can’t stop watching
Watch-ing
Amen my friend
How can anyone dislike your videos? Magnificent craftsmanship!!!
Another great post.
I have a mid 90s Breitling Cronomat, one of my most priced possessions. I recently had it back at the factory for a complete overhaul. It cost a small fortune but was worth every cent.
Congratulations on your ownership! The Breitling Chronomat is a gem. Definitely a watch worth maintaining. Money well spent.
Big thumbs up to this in-depth restoration of function and form! Not just another cockameme cleaning that is passed off as a restoration. You and the Nekkid Watchmaker are two of the few who actually restore, not just clean, watches. A real pleasure to watch and learn!
Not only being top skilled at the field, but also being very patients and careful with every smallest detail to make it perfect. Your work is the closest thing that could consider a kind of art.
I like the introduction of how you inspect the watch. Very professional. You are a master.
The "Insert Coin" stop-motion edit is what really got me haha. Keep up the great work, RDR!
One of my favorites of your videos. That rust was quite a challenge. And Big ol' props for you cleaning individual bracelet links!
You not only acquired the skill, but also creative, loved the Tetris bracelet editing!
WOW! so this is how professionals restore/fix watches... i am lost for words with how meticulous you do your job... 😯😯
Thanks for not putting music underneath the assembly part. This is the perfect format now.
Who let their Breitling get that bad? Have to appreciate a good watch. You are a true craftsman and now it's as good if not better than new. I'd be proud to wear it but I'm a die hard Omega guy.
I would never expect while started watching this video that I will finish it without any fast-forward even a second :D Brilliant skills, amazing precision. Well done !!
I have an A64050 Colt Ocean. She's 28 years old. She runs and looks like new. Personally I prefer my model design over this 7-year newer model. I reckon the previous owner lived his life to it's fullest :) Loved your video. I found it intriguing to better understand the workings of something I actually own. Thank you sharing your talent.
I'm only 1 minute in and I'm finding this watch stunning. Can't imagine how it will look in 20 minutes. What a beauty.
Fascinating. Your Elma cleaning unit appears to be vintage and your working environment clean. Over 35 years in the jewellery trade I seldom saw a jewellers workshop look that clean. Thank you for posting. I look forward to seeing more 👍
Regards from South West England.

Poor, poor watch. Thankfully there are guys like you that take care of this masterpieces. I want so much to wear that breitling
Martin Martinov it’s not a masterpiece
Boy McFacto to each his own right?
That video game editing of the bracelet reconfiguring was ON POINT.
Glad I found this and subscribed.
Can't decide what's more impressive: your work or your video editing.
Incredible... I found someone selling this same watch in used state, and I was a bit concerned about some minor scratches... and also about the fading paint of the numbers. Then I saw this video, and I realised that I should really calm down and don't worry ! It's true that I can't do this same authentic job like you do, but for the scratches and painting I'll search those same products you use ! Thanks !
I am supposed to be doing some homework, and now I'm in a rabbit hole of watching watch restoration work completed by "Red Dead Restoration" because it's interesting, fun to watch (love the arcade game sequence), educational, and addictive. Thanks for adding to my procrastination of my homework, Mr. Red Dead. I'm now fascinated by watch making and watch movement engineering...
The skill and patience level in the restoration are beyond words! As for the pathetic condition of the watch inflicted, I only have one thing to say: The owner does NOT deserve a Breitling watch.
How can there be people giving a thumbs down? This guy always does a FANTASTIC job restoring old watches.
For once, this watch has a very basic third party movement - ETA 2824-2, which could be bought seperately for around $200 instead of investing so much time and effort into restoring it.
@@trollse8714 That is not a reason to dislike this video. That's a pretty immature reason to thumbs down.
Maybe they're into rusty trombone restorations.
@@trollse8714 You make a valid point, however if it were my personal watch I would definitely want original movement restored. Besides nostalgic reasons of keeping watch as original as possible, the $200 replacement you mentioned does not have beautiful circular graining or Breitling winding rotor.
Philosophically we as humans have been finding it way too easy to throw things away. Part of the charm of a mechanical watch is that if taken care of can last generations. The rust spots left behind are just part of this watches journey.
As far as the video, basic 3rd party movements can be interesting as you can see where manufacturer spent $$, and where they needed to be thrifty. The whole video: the movement, case and bracelet restoration were fascinating to me, sorry it wasn't the same for you.
I’ve gained an incredible appreciation for mechanical watches watching your videos.
It amazes me there are people that give the videos a thumbs down. If you don't like watch makers why even bother? Very relaxing watching a guy who likes his work.
Beautiful job; thanks for posting. I'm a fan of the ETA 2824 movements. Really good work on the bracelet and bezel too.
As always, fabulous work. Artistry. Gosh, I love Breitling’s dive watches. My absolute favorite. I’ve bought two Subs, yet wear my SuperOcean 1500m a lot more. It’s more accurate and the bracelet is so much more comfortable.
I am looking to get a vintage ORIS and might need the skills of someone like this. Shame he doesn’t do customers watch repair. What a talent this is.
I don't blame him for not working on customer's watches. Dealing with customers and unreasonable time deadlines would take the fun out of the hobby.
@@scdevon well I would find it hard to imagine customers demanding they need a watch repairing on a timeline due to an event? I think we can live without watches. I guess this is an excel use in making money another way. Nice to watch but once you seen one or two, you seen most right.
@@jonathanfitzwater6517 - Customers are (sometimes) impossible to please for lots of other reasons besides time deadline expectations. Again, I don't blame this guy one bit for not accepting any paying work.
@@scdevon maybe you are right, would find it hard to believe over a timepiece. I have a number of old watches and picket watches that I am going to junk as they won’t be cost effective to repair. Sad but true
I have watched this video more time than I can count. That watch is so beautiful. I can't stop looking at it or wanting to buy one. Thank you for saving it.
I love this profession with all my heart, but I do not have the tools and devices to work and repair capacities like you. Thank you, respect and appreciation for your mastery of work and an explanation of the repair 💖
Music and watch design are perfect fit. Apart from that, fantastic work.
Without a doubt such attention to a details could be achieved only by a passionate watchmaker, great job!!
I've never seen anyone remove the balance pivot jewel at the beginning of disassembly and then replace it at the end. I'm not good enough to not lose that. Props to you.
I own that exact same model of Breitling. Now I know what my watch looks like inside and how it was assembled. Thank you.
I'd like to add that I've owned my Breitling Colt Ocean automatic since 2001 and I've worn it almost everyday. I haven't babied the watch at all. I swim with it and play water sports with it on. Two years ago I had it serviced for the first time. It still ran like new but I was concerned about the age of the seals. I was told that they degrade with time. After returning it to me the watchmaker remarked that the condition of the movement was really good considering that the watch was 20 years old.
I don't know how the watch in this video became so rusty. I can only assume that as some point it was submerged with out having the crown screwed down. Either that or it was improperly serviced at some point.
Watched ALL your videos. It's mesmerizing! And for me looks like some kind of magic. All the words about your outstanding skills and craftsmanship are already said in other comments, there is nothing to add. Only that I take my hat off in admiration.
I also wish that there was such a great master in Kiev, Ukraine, where I live. I have a Breitling watch - a present from my late mother, a very dear memory - and I can not service them properly here. There is a "certified service" for Swiss-made watch here, but... They charged awesome money for cervicing and afterwards the watch functioned wose than before: the self-winding lasts for less than one day (I have to wind the watch manually every fucking morning!), the watch is slow for 3-4 minutes per week etc, Man, why don't you live in Kiev!
Anyway, my profound admiration to your talent!
You sir have the patience, the precision and the hands of a surgeon. I so enjoy these videos!!
What a great job on bringing that one back to life.. From the water damaged ghetto to its original condition. Excellent job.. Kudos to you...!!
You have the skill and patience of a highly skilled surgeon. Your videos are calming and fascinating. Bravo! Keep up the excellent work. Truly mesmerizing content.
Great video!! This completes the last restoration video i had not watched in your channel. Hurry up and make another!!😁 Cheers!!
I am sat here absolutely mesmerised - this is stunning - truly stunning
Einfach nur Hammer ! Wahnsinn ! Für mich bist Du ein Künstler ! Super Videos !
At the moment with the reassembly of the movement, I left the chat. Fantastic work!
That movement deserved a clear exhibition back. Your work is a treat to the eye and loved the video game assembly line! 😂
That was amazing; it came up a treat. Anyone would be proud to wear that, and knowing that you completely refirb'ed it would make it all the sweeter! I'd love you to do that to one of mine - be good for another 20 years. Cheers from Australia.
Coincido con el comentario y el saludo, pero éste es desde Veracruz, México.
I can't describe how I am amazed by the video and the details of it .Seriously Breitling watches are master piece
Somehow, I find these videos enormously relaxing and satisfying.
I must admit i don't like the look of this piece. But you did an excellent job restoring the watch. I honestly learned a lot. Many thanks!
I'm a newbie to watch repair and every time I see work like this done, I realize how much farther I need to go to be as competent as Richard. I'm 73 years old and fear I'm running out of time...
I'm almost 71, and I hear you. Probably good that I have zero patience and my hands shake way too much. Love watching, though
Great job for bringing the dead watch back from the dead
wonderful job. despite the fact that I know this mechanism well and have done the same job more than once, it was a pleasure to see how a professional does it.
Amazing...Bought the same watch in 2000 and it’s fantastic to see just what makes mine so special...Thanks..
i realised that your rust remover is made out of Terminator T-1000's
Very sturdy but rusted watch. Lovely restoration. Breitling seems more sturdier than Rolex
This channel reminds me of the my mechanics TH-cam channel. Love it, calm precision work. Something so stress reliving about watching masters at work. Keep it up!
I couldn't agree anymore with you.I feel my stress dissolve as I watch this gentleman and my mechanics perform their magic on video for us to all enjoy. What a great thing, to be able to "sit beside" a master of his/her craft and "ride" along with them! I love it!
Agreed. I also watch Abom79, a skilled old school machinist. Same kinda vibe.
Hats off to your patience and accuracy. Keep uploading. Thanks.
Another magnificant Resto, I'm not a fan of big chunky watches but you did a great job on this...
Vielen Dank! Eine tolle Arbeit. Es ist auch unglaublich befriedigend, etwas defektem neuen Leben einzuhauchen. Toll gemacht!
That oldschool washing mashine is amazing! I never seen anything like this 😁
It is a typical watch movement cleaning machine.
@@traviswalker8933 For me it is not typical at all 😁
Amazing. Back from the dead. You put a lot of work into that one. 👍
Rust remover looks so mesmerising.
K
That watch was as pretty on the inside as it was on the outside. It's almost like a secret form of artistry, knowing the designer's work will only be seen by a few skilled individuals. And now all of TH-cam!
There's just something especially right about the double blue coating on the original crystal. The way it reduces so much reflection and makes the crystal almost disappear is what I think should be there. For all of the wear and rust you removed, very good work. 👏👏👏👍🏻
Entspannend das Video weil es ohne Musik ist. Sehr Gut!
The sounds of watch repai without a voice over........strangely satisfying
See the all mechanisms of the machine beeing restored and how it works it's very satisfying. Without voice explaining it's very relaxing
The best restoration channel.. Not only cause of skills for watch but also video making , editing and always something original.. Amazing🙏🥰
For some reason, this is so satisfying to watch.
This is beyond my understanding ....This man is another genius. I need parts in USA for my old Breitling Bentley model J44362.. My respects...
Incredible job!!! I have always loved Breitling watches. Love the little editing of the videos as well. Makes it fun!
Someone really need so much patience to do such jobs. Amazing videos.
I think these watches are nicer looking than a Rolex, i would love to own one someday
I agree, Breitling makes beautiful watches.
Preferred by most Pilots bcoz of its accuracy.👍
@@emonez1860 yeah a battery operated breitling maybe. The mechanical movement in the watch is a 2824-2 which is found in many swiss manufacturers (TAG. ORIS. RAYMOND WEIL ETC) decent movement but not what you would get if accuracy was your sole reason for purchase
@@stevenrothwell3824 Own a Sinn 103 Ti TESTAF what is actually officially certified as an aircraft instrument. Movement is a mass produced ETA Valjoux 7750 slightly improved. Nothing wrong with that. Military demands a very basic Lemania 5100. Have it in a lot of military watches , one of them with a 18 kt gold case ...
@@stevenrothwell3824 A top grade ETA 2824 movement with chronometer certification is extremely accurate, just as in house movements by companies like Rolex are.
Tetris minigame you made was great, really loved that!
That Tetris bit was very clever. *golf clap*.
👋🏻🙂Looking at you and real how you work is relaxing! Greetings from Italy🇮🇹 🤙🏻😉
The gamer side of me reeeeally appreciated the retro music and the Tetris game reference @10:03
Всегда было интересно посмотреть над кропотливой работой часового мастера. Успехов Вам.
another great restoration!! Such great watches! Love seeing them brought back and loved again!!
I wouldn’t know where to start. Great job 👍
This shows that when the movement is of a good quality, it can be repaired no mater the state.
Good old ETA (Eternamatic) movements are, in my opinion, the best movements.
This is absolutely the best i have seen anyone restore a watch especially the band i was just amazed man nice work
Amazing work and skills!! Im an avid watch collector, seeing this amaze me even more 👍🏻
Man your good, so Precise and surgical.
If these pieces could only talk..
Really like the content of your videos and how the watches are put together . You have a lot of patience to do this job . Keep up the great videos .
Watching videos of people restoring watches is extremely relaxing for some odd reason.
Great restoration! I prefer the original blue sapphire crystal but you did an amazing job - thanks for sharing.
I could watch this all day. I do love an old Breitling. I had a B1 a few years back and after selling it, it's the watch I miss the most.
the ingenious design of watches never fails to amaze me.
Beautiful. I love the alum part and that cleaning machine is the best👌🏾👌🏾
I usually don't like diver style watches, but I like this one for some reason.
they guy is a master restoring watches but its also an excelent D.O.P / movie maker. The macro shots! not easy, the editing !!, very well done .. i would like toi buy some of this watches!!
your video was such a masterpiece and was such a delight. thank you for making me feel as if I was there with you because it was wonderful to watch❤️❤️❤️🔥
Thank you for sharing this , awesome Craftsmanship and Patience , just awesome to see it working again
