Promarker vs Copic....... Which is worth it?
Don't forget if you wanted to grab yourself a set like I had in the video, Links in the description.
    - Also, regarding the storm, me and my wife are fine and safe. our area was hit HARD but we are on high ground, so we didn't suffer like our town which had 1m+ deep water running through. Unfortunate this has happened especially that its effected my in laws SO bad. My wife is panicking, but we will do what we can.
Anyways, I hope EVERYONE missing is found safe and it's truly a tragedy so many lost their lives.

my personal biggest problem with Promarker/brushmarker is their size. Because of it, i cannot use it precisely as i want. The body of marker hide the nib/brush from me and i cannt actualy see what i am drawing. Also they are not so comfortable in my hand (personal experience, too bulky for me). This is why i prefer Copic more. But, those white dots on a paper after using copics bugs me too.

I have been using copic markers for years now, and one the biggest things I will say about them is this: Copics need cardstock, Bristol, or marker paper to function properly. You can use sketch, watercolor, or mixed media paper, but you will notice the pigment separation.

I think he over sold the paper thing. I much prefer Promarkers over Copics, but you shouldnt be using them on "any type" of paper as you will bled them dry pretty quickly if you do. Also they look far superior on marker paper than other types, although I hear what he is saying about texture.
Edit to add: also it's still not a fair point to make. They are made to be used with a certain type of paper, which Promarkers are also, even though they are more versatile A fair test would be to use the proper paper they were intended for. It's like comparing a Ferrari to a range rover and testing them on an off road track, its not using them how they should be to get a fair result.

That speckling will occur on all paper types. I have never tried winsor and newton brush or promarkers personally. It's usually when you reach so many layers, of course thicker paper usually takes more layers than copy paper. It even happens on Xpressit Blending Card. So I don't think it's the paper, it's more than likely the ink which is crazy since copics are so expensive.

It's all up to personal preference at the end of the day. Copic markers are industry standard and great. And the pro and brush markers are also great. Personally I prefer Copic cause with refills it ends up being cheaper where I am but the pro and brush markers are also great. I have personally used Copic markers on all paper types and I have found them to work great but I definitely will say that on some cheaper paper they do not get as flat of tones but that doesn't matter to me personally. I use Bristol board and they work perfectly with what I use.

Aaah, a fellow promarker Connoisseur. I started off with touch five markers , but the day I caught some promarkers on sale at a hobby lobby three years ago, it was a dream. I didn't know markers could rival my love of colored pencils yet here we are.
I full on like their ink more than copic inks and their pricing is far more agreeable. I just WISH that prpmarkers had REFILLS. But I know the company isn't gong for it and it will jack up the prices. But man, I can go on ANY paper and have even clean strokes with no splotches. Nice coating. Easy layering. No streaks. I have mostly bullet nibs but their brush nibs are okay, a tad soft but still nice and affordable. I have 127 and they serve me fine. Just divine. Cept they die on me sometimes.
As for the copic, I have copic ciao , exactly 158. The ink is blotchy and spity no matter what paper I stick it on, I haven't bothered to buy exclusive copic paper because they are already charing ridiculous prices for the markers including the reboot refills that are arguably a ripoff. They are fresh and yet they go on kinda slow and dry. I need to layer for more for the copic than I do for a promarker, which is a con for me because it takes longer. While they are slightly easier to blend with and I really like their affects so they aren't a pointless investment, it is still possible to refill them and I really like their brush tips. This the perfect firmness, I must insist I don't like the inks behavior.
While I prefer promarkers, I use my copics and promarkwrs together on many pieces, the copics a d often good for shading and base layers. While the copic are good for detailing , gradients, and general blending and further renders. The inks are pretty compatible when combined, I found. And the colors each set has fill in the values/colors I'm missing from the other. Basically I have qualms with copic but they have their perks. Sad part is that I used to really want these as a kid, I'm still happy with them but I have my critisisms.
But if people want brush markers that have refill but aren't AS expensive as copics, I suggest blick studio markers in the 96 set. I also suggest art n fly markers as they are pretty nice and they also have refills and it won't eat up your wallet. I think a full set of art n fly markers comes in 72, they have it on their website. Oh, another one i know of are the spectrum markers (noir, illustrator) , they also have refills available. Lastly , the Shinhan touch markers (not touch five ) are refillable. But lats i checked they were so expensive , you might be better off with copics.
Ohuhu has nice brush markers in a lot of colors but they aren't refillable as of yet. Thats my thoughts.

  • @shevaunhandley1543
    @shevaunhandley1543 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I love the results from both sides. The Copic side reminds me of graphic novels 20 odd years ago with all that patchiness and depth of colour, but the promarker side? Love the smooth gradient of colour; there's nothing like it. I agree that the Copics should be able to handle any type of paper regardless and that really spoils it for me.

I’m an avid Copic user, having lived in Japan for years, where they are priced much more fairly than in Europe (where I live now). I love my Copics, but they are a little fuzzy when it comes to paper. But the pigments are beautiful and I love that they are refillable!
I also own three different Ohuhu sets (72, skin tone and pastel), and they tend to have the same paper fuzziness. So maybe it’s more a unique thing with the Promarkers?

I have Copics and I have to say I think part of the problem you had with blending the green was the lightest green you used. The G000 is the second lightest green marker they make (the lightest is G0000) and I find that using it to try and blend greens that aren’t as light as it is causes a lot of trouble and causes the colors to separate. It would be interesting to see how it would have come out if you had had a green that was closer in color to the others.
That said, I really enjoyed the comparison and hearing your thoughts on the two brands!!

Considering there are shifts in the promarkers partly masked by the color choices and years of practice that leads to developing techniques that help avoid leaving the unpleasant splitting so obvious, it leaves one to wonder how much would change on the copic side if they were more frequently used to develop the same types of adjustments in use to get the desired results. Granted, that still wouldn't alleviate the price issue, but it's a curiosity thing.

I own both Copic and Promarkers, and I totally vouch for your statement about the latter being much more applicable to all kinds of papers. I find myself using Promarkers more to color on my coloring books with varying types of paper.
I do want to point out that your art style, which is very cartoon-y and graphic, is not really in line with the intended use of Copics, which is meant for manga and illustration, where they tend to go for a more softer, painterly look most of the time, hence the slower ink flow. Promarkers on the other hand, are designed precisely for graphic artists who value good color payoff, even application and bright, distinctive colors.

@@Marktherocketdarts once you get used to how they work I do think that they are worth the money, the nibs are easily swapped and the ink you buy as replacement with do six to seven refills, the hard part is learning how you can get these best out of them, I have the full set and hf the toppers and the ranch of colour's are brilliant 👏

alcohol markers do not contain pigments. they are made of dye. so the problem you had with the copics may cause by the paper. i tried promarker/brushmarkers and copics on various types of paper and they have different effects as well as even color saturation.

  • @artistrymuzik
    @artistrymuzik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I will say for me, I found copics best when blending dark to light. Not the way done in video. Also letting each layer time to dry before putting in more color. But I do now want to try the pro marker after seeing this.

First of all I hope you and your loved ones are well out of harms way! All of my time spent in Germany was incredible and I hope that all of the people ( including all of my friends) have found safety and shelter. This truly pained me to watch from so far away. Please let us know if there are any links to help fund the recovery. My deepest sympathies to those who were effected.
Du, Du liegst mir am Herzen!
Pro-markers! Copic belong to there own niche with great results if you choose to use Copic, and Copic alone, products together. I have used WN pro-markers on all sorts of media... Always a smooth result.
Side bar: The inked drawing had so much more time to dry before adding the Copic markers. Granted. I also believe that they perform well over inked drawings because of their super low flow. I tested it with the one Copic I own and if you work it just enough it'll pull the black ink just as any other. Personal opinion from a personal experience.
    Keep up the excellent work!

I have been saving for so so long and have recently bought all 5 sets of Copic Sketch (and the 120 tin of Polychromo Pencils)! No regrets! I used to always drool over them when I'd see them, it's a dream come true for me! *Edit- I hope you all recover from the storm, and you're awesome for helping the animal shelters. I hope the animals are all ok and that your wife's family and friends can get help and be back on their feet very soon :(

I found this quite interesting, and kind of amusing. I clicked on this video to find out how well the highly expensive Winsor & Newton do. I do find it interesting that Copic set B, and the Winsor & Newton are reversed in price from where I live. But, if I find a decent priced set of Winsor & Newtons I'll pick them up.

I love the W+N Pro/Brush Markers. I've used them for years and the gradient and control they give are lovely. And the vibrancy absolutely works every time.
I never knew about Copic markers until I started watching TH-cam artists - and from what I've seen, the ProMarkers are definitely on a par or better.
Love the Loki picture! So expressive! Do you add to the pictures after filming is over (like backgrounds and things)?

Yes I agree it’s very tough to tell the pictures apart, but the fact that I can work on any paper and the price is so different- it’s W&N for me W&N is worth it for me!!!

I feel like it really boils down to what tool you have the most experience and practice with for example you will most likely have a better result with the pro markers because you’ve been using them for a while like you said. With more experience with the other marker you can achieve similar looks but with different techniques without a doubt. I like the subtleness of the pro markers but also like the punchiness in the copic side it all comes down to preference but both are great!

ouch, the copics struggled on this one! loved the vibrancy of promarkers, and their texture is just lovely isn't it? I also really liked the less saturated skin tone of the promarkers, the skin tone of the copics looked a bit orange i think. Anyways, great video as always and i'm happy to hear you're ok, stay safe!

Well copic alone has 3 different categories of greytones and in that category about 10-15 shades, so that alone makes 30-45 shades of grey.
Also they are refillable, i use mine since ages, never bought new ones, just refilled them.
And they have a even better blending effect if u use the special paper copic suggests
