      100% Fact. I was late to it, I didn't even play Super Metroid until 2021!!! Probably the best video game I've ever played, I put in 30 hours plus on my SNES mini. Looking to play Fusion, Zero Mission and the Prime series next before Samus returns and Dread.

    The original Metroid is my all time favorite video game. Have memories of watching my best frieind Chris playing and helping him figure it out. I was spending the night over at his house as I often did back then and we always stayed up all night watching music videos or horror movies.

    This video strikes me in my nostalgic core... Metroid carries the most potent feelings of childhood innocence for me. It was the 3rd game I got after the SMB pack-in and Zelda. and Super Metroid happens to be my absolute all-time favorite game. I can't even count how many times I've played it to completion. Thanks guys for bringing back those memories.

    LOVE the Metroid series, it was kinda forgotten by Nintendo for a while during the N64 era, but every game in the series (NES-GB-SNES-GBA-Gamecube-Wii) has been great... thanks for sharing your memories guys

    I remember playing Metroid at my cousins and not knowing what I was doing either and thinking the game was ok, but not for me, just like you did. I do love the game now that im older and better at games, but super Metroid...oh...my....GOD!!! That game blew me away. I just randomly picked it up without knowing anything about it and wow it is in my top 5 favorite games of all time. I love that game and actually just beat it for like the 100th time about a week ago. Still love it

    Inside the boxes of some Nintendo games was a card that you could fill out and send in. I remember getting some posters and what turned out to be a subscription to the Nintendo Fun Club. All that was free but eventually Fun Club became Nintendo Power and they started to charge money. They gave us the first issue for free and maybe some others but I quickly subscribed to the whole magazine. Every year when it was time to renew your subscription the’d give us a free gift. One year I got a Dragon Quest game with a poster, map and strategy guide. That “gift” was probably worth more than the whole magazine subscription. If you didn’t have Nintendo Power, I have to wonder why not? It wasn’t all that expensive. Cheaper than a new game and basically mandatory if you wanted to be up to date on Nintendo.

    I love this video you can tell how much you guys (especially rob) enjoys this series. Somthing that always urks me is when people say that video games are a waste of time but when you watch videos like this and you hear about all the great memories with certain games ect with your friends and family how can people still say its a waste of time!?? Its definitly worth it for the memories in my opinion.

    LoL your past childhoods mirror mine so well. I remember the xmas morning with the nes, and metroid was one of the games we got. My brother was older and played d&d with his friends, and it was metroid that broke the age difference. Ah the sleepovers and sleeping bags, mutant turtles, listening to you guys talk about this makes me feel like I'm listening to my own memories hehe.

    I played through Metroid for the first time on the NES Classic a couple of years ago and I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever died as much in a video game as I did trying to beat Mother Brain in that final room with shit flying at you knocking you off the platform non stop. If it wasn’t for save states I would’nt of ever finished the game

    This episode is a perfect example of why I love this channel so much because the video game stories are so original and so inspirational. i can totally relate to the fact that the game was a very endearing experience for me as well because the music and atmosphere was borderline scary and tense. It is a game I have beaten but I still need to complete all the same.

    The Metroid and Mega Man series are till this day my favorite series if all time. Metroid 2 was the most underrated of the Metroid series. Absolutely loved it and the original was the second game I ever owned on the NES when I got it as a kid. You guys are great and keep up the great work.

    I got Metroid and a NES for Christmas in 87 and I do have to say that was one of my favorite Christmases and Metroid is solely responsible for my video game addiction to this day lol. My parents wouldn't let me hook it up until after we were all done opening presents so once I did I played it from about 2 in the afternoon until 6 the next morning. I love that game and always wished they would of made a few more for the NES and would of loved one or two on the N64. My next favorite Christmas would be 91 when we got a SNES and I got Final Fantasy II which became one of my all time favorite games. Great memories!!

      You should check out the "Metroid Deluxe" ROM hack. It's the original Metroid, but with a whole new map and different item locations. It's very well designed, and very challenging.

      *****: Zero Mission is a remake of the original Metroid, with improved graphics and extended story; it is Samus re-telling the story of her first ever mission and how she went from having a relatively nice suit of armour to an awesome power suit that turned her into the one woman army she is today. I wish they would re-make Metroid 2 and 3 as well :(

    I freaking love Metroid! I sometimes wish Nintendo would not focus so much on Mario and Zelda, and make a really good Metroid game for god's sake. I think prime hunters was the last game I played and it was awesome but I'd like to see something on the Wii U or whatever the next console will be.

    • @nuketowncity
      @nuketowncity 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nic B. I have been saying the same thing for 20 years , Metroid was Nintendo's Halo but no one at Nintendo ever came to the same conclusion , even tho it was blatantly obvious

    • @nicb.1411
      @nicb.1411 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      nuketowncity I agree! Honestly Metroid has potential to be greater than Halo if they make it a little more mature. Star Fox can be the Sci-Fi character for kids and Metroid for the adults. But Nintendo's head is still stuck in the past so it might be awhile before we get something like that.

    • @inamoratasamazing
      @inamoratasamazing 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nic B. The problem is it doesn't exactly have a fanbase over in Japan, and they inexplicably base their decisions to make and port games off to the west based on the sales in Japan. Not to mention that sadly Metoid's creator and the director of the games before Prime passed away in a car accident...
      At least there's the fan remake of Metroid 2 Return of Samus that was for the Gameboy. It's coming along well and looks fucking amazing so far. Based on the demo it's going to be the best 2D sidescrolling game to come out in years.

    love it! metroid is one of my all time favorite series. metriod and super metriod blew my teenage mind. metriod prime blew my adult mind and is one of the games that got me back into gaming after a 10-15 year break. i really like how you guys can reminisce. one of my best friends back then became my "friend" solely because he had a sms. i did end up like him for him but at first it was only because of the sms. he knew it but understood because he had phantasy star! we bonded playing that game!

    Metroid is my favorite game series. It's nice to see some people talking about it. Seems like a lot of reviewers (that I watch anyway) don't talk in depth about Metroid. It's always in passing and in reference to the games being good but no one really elaborates or makes videos dedicated to it. Cool stuff, guys.

    I know what you mean about not understanding how to approach the original game upon first being introduced. There's a significant "maze" component that was a new concept at the time. I didn't have any published maps or guidebooks, so I drew my own simple maps on graph paper as I went through the game. Beating the game became like an obsessive project for me!

    • @DSan-kl2yc
      @DSan-kl2yc 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      what he said about tackling it as an action game is something I relate to. I didn't think about it at the time but I just kept pushing forward, and fast. So the going up and not really having a destination, and not having dialogue or anything, it was all so discouraging or dispiriting.
      BUT SUPER METROID WAS AWESOME. Maybe it was how visually cool it was or the music but I just loved playing it. Maybe cause it was easier to tell the sections too.
      Metroid is a franchise I feel I love only because of Super Metroid. Fusion was kinda just average, and I didn't play zero. I can tell that Prime is visually impressive, and usually the intro track is interesting but after that I usually can't remmeber the music or pay attention. I mean here and there I do. But I couldn't get all that used to it or excited after I bought it. Even with all the script from the descriptions. It's cool for the animals but for all the file reading, it's overdone.
      I thought I wanted something slightly like Other M but everything about that seems wrong I didn't even bother. Y'know there were a lot of hard sci fi anime around that time so I don't get why it's been difficult to give Metroid slightly more story. Not in terms of plot but in terms of being less objective and moving the player.

    The first Metroid is the pinnacle of gaming in my eyes. That game was so totally revolutionary in many ways. One of the best parts about the Metroid series is the phenomenal music. The first time I experienced Metroid was at a friends house and I was immediately transfixed by the haunting music and atmosphere. The original Metroid would have to be my favorite game of all time and I'm an old 37 so I've played A LOT of games.

    One of the most impressive moments of Metroid - for me personally - was the closing credits sequence displayed at the end of the game. It was like I had just finished watching a good movie.
    I know it sounds ridiculous, but this totally amazed me back in the day. I was graduating from the likes of the Atari 2600 at the time, and it was the first time I'd seen such a thing in a video game.

    Super Metroid passed me by in the 90s, but now years after buying a SNES Classic, I've finally got round to it this past 2 weeks and finished it. Amazing game, crazy how it's taken me so long to experience it. It's got that similar sense of adventure that Zelda has, but in a completely different setting and style.

  • @wattage
    @wattage 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Metroid and Zelda are my co-favorite games of all time. I remember beating Metroid with the original square controller and being so happy with myself! God such memories... I remember during the run-up to the Mother Brain, how those Zeebetite (?) tube things would keep regenerating and growing back and those little random fire rings that would bump you off the platforms... at the end... so frustrating.. When I finally finally got it done, it was such an awesome feeling.
    Metroid was the first real game I purchased. I had the original set that had the gray gun, ROB the robot, Duck Hunt and Gyromite. No Super Mario Bros! So after killing all the ducks I could and getting fed up instantly with Gyromite, I picked up Metroid. I played the HELL out of this game. It was so good.
    This was a great nostalgic episode, guys. Thank you so much for the memories!

    I'm only 23, and where I'm from, games were a huge luxury growing up. The first Metroid I tried was Super Metroid. A friend of my mothers' kid was having a birthday, and for whatever reasons, her mother decided to invite me too.
    As soon as I stepped into her room, I noticed two things: 1) I was the only guy there; 2) There were games.
    Since they had no interest in the games, I popped that sucker in and played Super Metroid the entire day/evening.
    Mesmerized, is the word.

    I remember how it took me forever to beat Super Metroid. Countless weeks of renting and borrowing from friends.

    I remember being impressed with the rain effects in the area around Samus's ship for some reason. I was also impressed with the rain in Metroid Prime...

    I LOVE Metroid, it's probably my favorite series ever. It's great to hear you guys talk about it and it's nice to see that you guys like it too. The music, the graphics, the gameplay, the atmosphere, everything about these games is just incredible.
    A question to Rob Man though, how did you find out about JUSTIN BAILEY? Was it in the Nintendo Player's Guide?

    I really enjoyed seeing you guys get all misty-eyed and nostalgic in this video, thanks for sharing! Ridiculously, I have neglected the Metroid franchise throughout my gaming life, something I really need to rectify. I love Fusion on the GBA, so Super Metroid is a shoo-in. Metroid Prime was nice too, but I didn't get on with the DS game.

    Super Metroid is most definitely #1 SNES game. It's the bomb diggity. Absurd pixel art & animation, atmosphere, replayability, controls & even glitches.
    Edit: I'm with you, Johnny! I never understood Metroid / back-tracking games (Zelda included, although I liked playing the original, I would aimlessly wander) until a friend played Super Metroid in its entirety & it clicked! Same story with Ocarina, my friend took a deku branch, lit it in the fire & approached the web to open a path -- it all suddenly made sense! Growing up on hardcore platformers/fighting games/brawlers, left to right progression, it was a different world. I remember thinking "what's up with these blue/pink squares? Why can't I continue right? Door's locked? Hahaha.

    The first metroid game I've played was Zero Mission on the GBA. I was impressed at how much fun I was having. I honestly thought that the game might have been to hard for my tastes and I wouldn't last more than an hour. But I ended up playing a huge chunk of it, and was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had.
    I definitely gotta go back and give it a play through

    Remember those timed demo displays they used to have at department stores? I had a friend who was so obsessed with this game that he managed to beat the entire game despite the time limit.
    He had his time managed so well that he could run back to the save point SECONDS before the time was up. After the reset, he'd load it up and keep playing until the game was finished. If it wasn't for this video, I would have forgotten about that story! One of the many reasons why I love this show. =)

    Same. I'd love a 2D sidescroller for the 3DS and another Prime for Wii U. Just think of the possibilities for another Prime with the Wii U GamePad...
