The very very basics of staying alive on your tower. There is so much to discuss on this topic, but wanted to keep it as short as possible but still convey some of the more important points that come to mind when I think of Hams climbing towers.

Great safety video! I've never climbed a tower, but I have a lot of rock and tree climbing experience. I used to do whitewater kayaking and rafting, and we used ropes a lot especially for rescues. I was also a firefighter. Ropes and webbing can cause serious entanglement emergencies. Always carry a knife. It should be your last resort, but it can save your life. I get your trepidations though. Stay safe.

What is your opinion on setting up a progress capture device on your tower? Like the croll or something similar.
Of course, you won’t want to let a good rope sit out in the elements for years, but running like a heavier duty paracord to a pulley, so you can pull up a good static rope to use with the ascender.
    The theory here is:
    1) Fall prevention hurts a lot less than fall protection.
With a progress capture, if you slip, you don’t fall more than the slack in your harness.
    2) Rescue.
Using say a 150’ rope on a 50’ tower, you could secure the anchor side of the rope after going through something like a pretzel ID. If something happens, and you can still undo your safety hooks, you could be lowered to the ground by someone ON the ground.

You need to inspect the anchor before climbing, but the anchor for an LSD system is at the top. So for the first climb of the season you should use lanyards to go up and inspect it. If you don't plan to climb the tower very often i would just stick with lanyards.

Wow . very impressive Jack. Safety first is how you stay alive. I love that antenna on your tower. Would love to know exactly how you got it up there? I bet it wasn't easy. Has lightening ever been a problem? The cost of an antenna like that and what bands it works with? Great video Jack. Be safe buddy.

I have free climbed my whole life and really didn't know any better. I recently acquired a proper harness with a seat and am still learning the ropes since I am a bit older (68). I have an 18 foot long repeater antenna DB420, that needs replacement on a tube top Rohn 25g tower. The two climbers I think had only ever worked on flat top Rohn towers and they seemed to be stopped by the tapered tower top section. They would not climb high enough to remove the antenna. They use the fall arrest. I have searched and have not seen a video on safely climbing to the top of this type of tower. To properly handle a long vertical antenna the top of the tube must be about waist high. Any chance of you making this sort of video? I use an M200h mast.
