    From the outside, it looks like EJ isn't yet confident riding blind. Every bend he comes out to get sight of it, then boom, 10 wheels gone. It is probably subconscious. He almost needs more time in a team train learning to trust the wheel infront and go with the flow.
    Easier said than done though. Keep at it. Great start.

      for sure, its a big ask to take someone whos new to trust a bunch of people they dont know not to cause a massive pileup at 30mph even more so in the wet. even i notice in depending on who im riding/racing with. guys i know and have known for a decade on the track? ez pz ill just sit on your wheel. random dude out on a road ride rollin with me? eh imma give you a bit more space since i dont know your tendencies

      @Mikel Ritchie Cycling it wasn't a criticism. I don't race bikes at this level. I used to ride racehorses steeple chasing and on the flat here in the UK as well as New York and Virginia. So I do know a thing or two about what confidence and trust in those around you it takes to be travelling in a pack at 30mph blind.
      EJ has knocked it out of the park in terms of his progression.
      Mikel, thanks for taking the time to read my post and interact.

    I am impressed with this young man. It is daunting enough to enter P/1/2/3 race, but to do it after already racing that day…this is a guy who loves racing his bike. That love blossomed, I’m sure, when he won his first race! That just blows me away. My first CAT 5 was a disaster. Guys sprinted right from the gun and it was clear that it was every man for himself. I was in the fight and riding like a lunatic just to stay with the group. No tactics. No strategy. Just flat out. Until a crash that I just avoided, and exhaustion ended any chance of ever seeing the front group again. EJ is getting great coaching and he will find success. He clearly has the engine.

    I know I'm just the peanut gallery out here...but for context: I did both races this day as well, I averaged I believe 40W less in the P1-3 than the 2/3. The 2/3 was just less smooth in the corners and a lot of slinky effect happening. Something to note in the P1-3, that inside line isn't ACTUALLY there. It may look like it for a split second but that door is going to close and you're going to grab brakes. If you just follow the lines of the peloton you can be extremely efficient in these races. If you watch everyone else, they go wide because they're carrying so much speed they need the whole road wide, apex, wide to complete the corner at 30+, especially in the wet. Good racing, big dawg. Come back down soon.

  • @jrbos
    @jrbos ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Drafting! My observation, for what it’s worth, is that EJ wants to see up the road, which pulls him out of every draft opportunity. Even when he thinks he’s drafting, he’s not. Jeff, you need to teach him how to draft. Don’t just tell him to draft, teach him, show him, make him draft behind you.

  • @tommyrq180
    @tommyrq180 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Impressive! First p/1/2 race and he goes off on one attack! Shows guts. In my first P/1/2 (SoCal, 1980s) I had one Cat 1 teammate who told me to just stay on his wheel the entire crit and several thereafter. Greatest learning experience! I could follow a wheel tightly so stuck on him like glue although lost him at times but worked to re-acquired him. He didn’t fight for anything, was just there to tow me around and demonstrate efficiency. It’s an approach I used as a coach many, many times over the years-put a newbie (or sketchy handler) on the wheel of a good pack rider and let it rip. Or I’d say to riders who had trouble in the pack to follow a particularly smooth pack rider from another team. Just totally stay on his wheel. Was a great way to learn and advance and learn pack efficiency. I ended up a couple years later being the lead out guy for our one really good sprinter. I had good teachers, which is unfortunately somewhat rare on bike teams.

    It's always funny listening to you guys reconcile speed into energy. lol It's simple though, kinetic energy is proportional to the square of velocity. This means, if you double your speed, you expend 4 times the energy, and if you do this over a consistent amount of time, your power required is 4 times higher too. It wouldn't hurt to look at some energy equations, and checkout the drag equation.

      @@matthiles5766 I see your point, but I don't think it is to do with EJ's baseline fitness. I think he was just born with a large aerobic capacity (and most likely a relatively high VO2Max - would be interesting for Jeff to test this actually), and an even bigger anaerobic sprint. He is one of the small percentages within the population that has the right combination of genetics for cycling.

  • @shepshape2585
    @shepshape2585 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wanted to help by Googling the definition of drafting for EJ, since he seems oblivious. Here's what it says: Drafting occurs when a cyclist moves into an area of low pressure behind another cyclist, reducing the wind resistance and the amount of energy required to pedal.
    I don't know, sounds like a pretty good strategy to me.
    That being said, the young man has made amazing strides in moving up from Cat 5 so quickly. He's got great power and stamina, he just has to get over his fear of being on a wheel at those speeds. If fear is going to continue to get the best of him, he may as well hang it up.
