Just a little warning pertaining to the wading out into the ocean at sunrise.
ALWAYS be mindful of your surroundings & the cycle nature is on. Here in the Mid-Atlantic, we have very brackish water. Especially in the Chesapeake Bay where overfishing of oysters, our waters natural lungs/filtration system combined with even bigger cargo ships have resulted in more brackish waters.
Whether you are in the Atlantic, the Chesapeake Bay or any of the rivers the danger you run into at any time but ESPECIALLY dusk & dawn are the Bull Sharks are feeding during this time. Their color is the perfect camouflage for brackish waters & they live to stay close to shore. I have seen them right beneath the piers of Ocean City, Rehoboth Beach, Atlantic City.
I've seen them caught in the Assawoman Bay, Delaware Bay & Chesapeake Bay.
And I have seen them as far inland as Denton, Maryland right beneath the pier of the Choptank River Yacht Club.
Bull Sharks are not the type to ignore you if you ignore them.
They are ambush predators who take a huge bite on that 1st hit & decide whether or not to strike again. They've been caught with everything from jewelry such as rings/watches to car license plates in their stomachs etc.
Skates also like to stay very close to shore & hunt horseshoe crabs & mate. They blend in perfectly with the bottom which is why we locals have perfected the "skate shuffle" shuffle your feet & they typically scoot away from the disturbance you make as you approach them. If you just walk in the shallows you risk stepping on one & once that tail whips up & imbeds in your leg, it is typically an life flight trip to the ER because a hospital 15 minutes away during the off season becomes at at least an hour or more stuck in traffic that doesn't get out of the way for first responders.
