  • Meet Bethlehem Tilahun founder of SoleRebels, our 23rd #MellaMonthly speaker. From the humblest of beginnings, Bethlehem has built SoleRebels into the planet's fastest-growing African footwear brand and the very first global footwear brand to ever emerge from a developing nation. She has created world-class jobs and empowered her community and country, whilst presenting a galvanized, dynamic face of African creativity to the global market.
    Bethlehem was born and raised in the Zenabwork/Total area of Addis Ababa, one of the most impoverished and marginalized communities of Ethiopia. Growing up Bethlehem saw that Ethiopia had plenty of charity “brands” but not a single global brand of its own, so she set out to change all that. In early 2005, fresh out of college in Addis Ababa, Bethlehem founded the trailblazing footwear company soleRebels to provide solid community-based jobs. Tapping into her community’s and the nation's rich artisan wealth and heritages, Bethlehem started re-imagining what footwear could be.
    Many shoes and hundreds of creative, dignified and well-paying jobs later, soleRebels is the planet's fastest-growing African footwear brand and the world’s first and only World Fair Trade Federation [WFTO] Fair Trade certified footwear company. Constantly elevating the idea of what her brand can achieve, Bethlehem has led soleRebels to become the first-ever brand from a developing nation to open branded, stand-alone retail stores around the globe including in Asia and the EU.

    I absolutely love it! She’s a very inspiring person. I am sure Ethiopia has more people like her. They just have to come through. These motivational speakers she spoke of, they are there, I have met amazing motivating people in Addis. They’re just unknown to the public. But that can be changed! Thanks for this beautiful episode! :)

    The interviews can be synthesized into Entrepreneurship training. Great job Mella in adding perhaps the greatest in the field. I think many Ethiopians will be able to understand her speaking in the local language.

    I love this series but my one critique would be with the interviews being in English. I understand you have non Amharic speakers in the audience, but I think it’s important to share this ideas in Amharic because so many Ethiopians (around Ethiopia) will be left out. We shouldn’t cater to first gens or non Ethiopians. Also, I think we should be proud of our language and embrace it! Don’t make English the norm in your series. You can add English subtitles for non Amharic speakers.

      well said

    • @kde6769
      @kde6769 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hm...actually I don't want all entire interview to be in amharic. They are using both language and switching between the two. This is better since anyone who understands one of the language will be able listen and also pick up words and phrases from the other language. They can't force their interviewee to speak in a certain language too

    • @entertainmentprime101
      @entertainmentprime101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kde6769 Yes you can dictate the language like he is trying to make it in English. But you have to ask who the target audience is we are Ethiopians and as much as i love English normal Ethiopians shouldn't be forced to learn English to understand this. This was made for Ethiopians so Amharic and other Ethiopian languages would be best. They can also add English Subtitles for the ones who would like to learn

    • @melat4400
      @melat4400 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      KD ES that’s actually worse than just speaking in English. Unless you are fluent (or an advanced speaker) in both languages, you will be confused when they switch between English and Amharic. Anyways it’s fine if we are their target audience (I personally like switching between the two). But if it’s for all Ethiopians, their reach will be much narrower.

    I truly appreciate your show however speaking two languages can be confusing to some people so please try to go with a complete Amharic or English in your show in order to establish clarity in the conversation

    Had it been a political or racist episode, we would have seen millions of junkies here.Thats why this enterview has less viewers than a simple political trash talk.So annoying .
