    What is Power BI? What is Power BI used for? This video explains Power BI in plain English.
    You see, there is a reason why companies are investing more and more in Power BI projects.
    Actually, there are four reasons why Power BI is preferred to the competition.
    Power BI beats the competition in terms of sharing reports - you can easily share Power BI reports on the browser, on mobile, in Excel, Teams and also PowerPoint.
    Power BI also wins in terms of implementation times. A Power BI project is much more flexible and faster to implement.

      Love that you made it starting from basics that will get anyone building to THEN integration with source/references using M and PowerQuery. Astute and practical so in short time someone could speak to their knowledge and ability which already exceed antiquated reporting options requiring 3rd party integration in most cases as you spoke to. Your trajectory is awesome and hope it affords you great success, now you and your team go enjoy a holiday or just R&R for the solid work!

      This is a metrics utility. It isn't really Business Intelligence. For actual BI, you would need an actual business logic or business application integration utility whereby a business analyst can create scenario's based on business rules to be applied to an actual metric, business function and process. BI via MS is just an advert ploy.

    • @j.ballsdeep420
      @j.ballsdeep420 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@nrgpirate -- Not simply for sake of argument and to start any stupid internet arguments, I do humbly disagree: Even if you believe I am still wrong here, I would implore you to research what top-tier industry leaders like Forrester define it as (or even many top-tier business schools or schools with strong computer science programs and their textbook definitions) only because I think if you don't just take some person on TH-cam or a commentor say, perhaps their definition of BI is/includes along with their objective statement for what BI could be considered, perhaps you'll see what I do which is that I believe you're really speaking more to machine learning and AI utilized within an RPA. That said, PowerBI queries can be used as source data for RPA programs such as BluePrism or PowerAutomate, plus I would argue the benefits of that all being in the MS ecosystem so your database storage, data intelligence, reporting, and general data generation all living within their sphere makes for a far better end-user experience, continuity, increased adoption and therefore nurture a greater digitally leveraged enterprise, while doing so with far less growing pains, knowledge gaps, or silo'd knowledge to ultimately get to a similar end-goal as using multiple systems/applications from a myriad of options from 3rd parties. RPA though with BI is what I think you may have been driving at, though I am happy to agree to disagree.

    • @jebear1
      @jebear1 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I once worked with a business manager that spent all his time creating and shaping metrics. Didn't spend much time at all working on actual profit generation. There needs to be balance in terms of simplicity (to deploy and understand) and time. Remember the good old days of KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid?

    • @FSCHW
      @FSCHW ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jebear1 we have measures to support measures that support measures. 3 tiers. All three level get included in raise and bonus determination as if it were a portfolio. All three levels get measured and discussed with accountability on a regular basis (daily). So much so that it drives people to focus on record keeping for the scorecards rather than the performance that the scorecard is supposed be measuring and driving.

    • @nrgpirate
      @nrgpirate ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@j.ballsdeep420 You are the first person in years to reply with facts. I commend that and I do agree. You are right. RPA with BI is what I am driving at. BI is just the presentation, where by RPA helps to drive the source of the data and logic, which demonstrates MVC paradigm. BI as the name is just an advert moniker and nothing more. This causes a lot of confusion for stake holders in companies expecting it to magically do everything. Its ability as a visualization tool gives false impressions to what it can and cannot do. As an architect and engineer, it is vital to evangelize to both sides of the business unit - the business side and the IT side.. the importance of gaining the proper metrics and simulate them in a DevOps/Product driven environment. If we are talking about the product side, knowing what is the customer behavior during a session helps drive the shape of the ui for customer experience to improve engagements in a campaign. If we are talking about thru-put, knowing where the bottle-necks are occurring and why is essential for maintaining enterprise solutions that have heavy traffic, so then the convo comes into play of SLA. For that I would never entertain BI... I would use Dynatrace, because I can dive all the way to the device responsible and be able to escalate it. Again Thank you for your comment.

    Could you make a similar power bi video for academics? Specifically for professors who coordinate programs and have 100 students who major in a topic. That would be very helpful. The goal would be student retention and Fast Track graduation. Whenever a student fails a course they are set back to not graduate on a schedule. Classes are not offered every semester, so the delay for graduation may increase. Basically what I'm looking for is a personal interaction with hundred plus students hoping the power bi may help me. For example, social support, celebration messages, birthday greetings, highlights of achievements, such as presentation at conferences or other activity students do. Additionally, personal stories, testimonials, and alike (from students). Tnx!

    I like this angle that you are talking about Power Bi implementation. My experience (approx 1 years) of Power Bi dev projects are much more complicatedt than that what the end users are made to belive. As they start off in wrong angle and dont understand update of data, storage etc.. It is not as excel unless you deal with data in your local machine then is more possibilities. Depends on company but Power Bi reports are tip of ice bergs, and has to have to e part of a solid ecosystem. The stong pro of power bi is that you can maintain and control datasets in that environment. The datasets can then be provided to end users for their purposes.

    Yes Power BI is the future. It take automation to the next level. I am using Power BI extensively and trust me I have not shared my BI dashboard or report to anyone. Yes you heard right and still I have automated 100% reporting needs of my department with this amazing tool. Everyone get what he want without any delay. No person dependency for any kind of report. Around 100 people are served happily with around 30 reports ranging from daily, weekly to monthly reports. Not only reports but a complete workflow is working with BI, powerapps and power automate. We are using Excel just to download and view reports. No formula any where

    Anyone questioning this needs to know as someone in a Fortune 100 company dynamic to change but most importantly to S-tier applications that are used in our level of industry, if you have ANYTHING to do with reporting or reporting creation, you NEED to learn PowerBI: If your company hasn't already adapted as a good solid 50%+ of our company has from any other antiquated dashboards, I can tell you they WILL in the coming years or next decade if your company is not quite so high-level. PowerBI allows you to build on existing MS Power based applications and integration like PowerQuery where M language will be interchangeable, but being able to even take basic Excel data and ramp it up using advanced functions like PowerQuery getting data from a plethora of datasets simply as a source data or even reference to be able to manipulate, tie other sources together, while having dynamic data that is 100% accurate to existing workbooks, databases including SQL, Teradata, Azure, AWS, etc, then you can see the power and interconnectivity of PowerBI as a reporting dashboard while also learning it from a very skilled and talented person who can teach you from an introductory level to being a MS certified Master. Don't question it, research it to validate this, then don't hesitate and jump on the cutting edge so you're not a Dinosaur talking about your abilities to take MS data and integrate it into Tableau, plus look at any Forbes 100 job postings, this is only a preferred qualification as of today so you're learning what will make you a fucking rock star as any applicant.

      I work for a massive global company also, and I am pretty sick of people presenting page upon page of stats in Power BI when the useful data can be summarised in a couple of well planned dashboards. This is the result of providing tools to people without backing it up with proper training. Plus, some of the people using the tool clearly dont have a clue about the context behind the data they are supposed to analyse...

I've tried linking Excel to Power BI with automatic updates of the POwer Bi repoerts once data is changed in Excel, and No MVP is actually addressing this issues. In my opinioin this is the 'missing link". A proper synchronization tutorial that will make it easy for most of the companies. Are you not in agreement with me?.. Thanks Lelila. Cheers Martin

      The answer to your question is “yes it is possible”. You can do it using Excel functions (formula) and you can do it using PowerQuery (also known as get and transform data or simply “M”). In Excel explore the date functions they can even take account of working days and bank holidays. In powerquery explore date tables.
      However if I understand your question correctly you may need quite a complex formula. What I did was create my own excel function using VBA (which is part of Excel). I had to cope with blank end dates (the service hadn’t stopped) and data issues such as end dates before start dates and to choose between counting days and counting nights. If a service starts on 1 may and ends on 2 may then in my data that was 2 days or 1 night.
      The key thing to understand is that excel holds dates as whole numbers. 29April - 3May gives a meaningful result. So does max(29April,1Apri)-min(30April,End date). In this context max means “the latest of”.

    Part of my job, unfortunately, is data science. I don't see this used much compared to products like Tableau. I have always preferred to look at data in a programming language. Then again my data sets are millions of lines, so you have to integrate with data lakes. I'll use Tableau when I have to, but my goto is Python coupled with Pandas and MatPlotLib. That way I can use machine learning and large language model AI concepts. If you wan to be relevant in the near future, you better learn the AI models, before they are used to replace a lot of people.
