The Egyptian Book of Thoth - Real Ancient Egyptian Initiation Ritual - Hermetic Philosophy

  • Thoth was the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom, magic and writing and the legendary revealer of the Hermetic philosophy in the form of Hermes Trismegistus. Preserved in around 30 Demotic fragments is the ritual by which a priest-scribe became initiated into the service of Thoth to serve in the House of Life or an Egyptian Temple. In this episode of Esoterica, we explore this complex and ancient text describing the inner sanctum of the "Chamber of Darkness," the complex mystical exams the initiate undergoes, travels to the Sun and the Netherworld, and more. I also explore the connections between this text and the ancient Greek Religious-Philosophical text of the Corpus Hermeticum and Hermetic Philosophy.

You are very wise my friend . I took many years studying the academic background on these arts before starting the practice.
Many gods go through changes over the centuries and knowing the beginnings of them is important. Like pazuzu the demon that attacked Linda blair's character in the exorcist. Highly unlikely pazuzu would attack little girls as it was pazuzu who protected children before hollywood got their hands on this entity. And also what started as people saying a few words to their daemons before leaving the house that changed to people praying to demons before leaving the house. Here people started to see this go from an internal to what was thought of as an external power . The understanding of how systems changed over history tells us much about the bare bones of the system at its core.

In Sydney we refer to Ibises as 'bin chickens', because they have a reputation as urban scavengers. Sadly this is because of the destruction of their natural habitat, but I am very fond of them nonetheless - not least because of their association with Thoth/Hermes. As an underpaid academic, they remind me that one can be both a scholar AND a bin chicken.

I was introduced to Hermeticism by a dear friend of mine who recently passed away. Although I have some knowledge of the Latin and Greek Classics, before meeting my friend, I wasn't entirely sure what the term "Hermetic" meant. (That's true, but also, I think, a good joke about the academic separation of a few ancient texts deemed "Classic" from all the rest.) I first came across your channel yesterday, and I've watched several of your videos on Hermeticism since then. Right at the very beginning of the first video I saw the volumes by Lynn Thorndike on the shelf behind you, which to me was a very hopeful sign of quality, and you haven't disappointed in the slightest. Then toward the end of that video I was thinking, Well, this guy's the bomb, but I still need some help sorting out the editions of the primary sources -- BUT YOU RECOMMEND EDITIONS OF THE PRIMARY SOURCES!!! On TH-cam no less! So I'll be working my way through some of the primary texts, in order of their linguistic difficulty for me: Latin first, because it's the easiest for me, then Greek, then... well, I guess, for me personally it's a tie for 3rd place between Armenian and Coptic and Hebrew and Arabic and Aramaic, and did I forget any? But yeah, I'll definitely let you know how that goes! I'm stoked! Amazon has shipped Festugière's edition of Asclepius!

I can't express enough the amazing resonances and singular brilliance of this episode from a year ago (!) that I had thought would also elude me intellectually as I attempt to grasp even the foundational concepts discussed and only just now played. As temerity and gall compelled, I began to play it in background, gasp, while neck deep in a mundane assigned real estate review chore, which I normally do not do, since office jazz/shamanic flute music can lull me. And Thoth has been and continues to be the most fascinating figure from Ancient Egypt! Every second of the episode had me pause desk work to watch it all and take it all in! Plus serendipities come to mind! A certain path to step onto with integrity and intrepidness. Hekat/Haket 🍺 raised to you, Doctor Justin Sledge! Soon half the full attention watch numbers will surely be mine! May 📜 scrolls of Thoth find you always! 📚 📖 ✍️ 🪨

Well, Golden Dawn primarily since the officiating officers represent Egyptian deities. W. Westcott, a founder of the GD required new initiates to read the Corpus Hermeticum. He said that it would help the initiate of the 0=0 grade to comprehend the initiation ceremony. I believe that you and Westcott are correct.

What an absolute pleasure listening to a person with so much knowledge.
I love to observe lectures presented by people who exist several (or several dozen..) levels above me in regard to any formal education on a subject.
Usually, I have to replay every sentence, or every few sentences, to gain a full (fuller, yet sadly, eternally incomplete, if I'm honest) understanding of the material.
I can't even imagine the myriad hours you must have spent just absorbed in these ancient, ethereal and magical worlds through your research, literally discovering the lost secrets of mankind and those of our universe.
It's quite evident that one thing which makes your content so attractive to viewers is how passionate you are about the subject.

I absolutely love your channel. Something that occurred to me while watching this was how interesting it would be to get your perspective on how a scholar in each of several periods would have viewed the pedigree of their literature. For example, would an early Hermetic scholar believe they could trace their wisdom to a literal Thoth? Did Medieval readers of the Zohar think of this wisdom as having come spontaneously from Rashbi, or perhaps as belonging to an older oral tradition? And did the movement of literary Humanism view themselves as unearthing ancient truths that would recycle some sort of golden age, or did they view their work more as literary archeology? I suppose you could call this a metaretrospective or something.

So very well done. You are able to understand perspectives of the human being through time as their consciousness of themselves were bound to their time period. It's more scientific than interpretation because essentially it's about unbiased observation. The way we are taught is that one can step into the past and become like them and rewrite things so that it conforms to truth. In other words, can we really write down things today and claim they will be truths 100 of years later? We cannot and if we understand we are attempting to look at it the same way in these hermetic text.

GREAT VID, DR. SLEDGE!!🙌 THOTH (Tjehuty) is also associated with the Divine Benben, he also stole 5 days from the other Neteru ( playing Kemet)., thus adding the final 5 days in our calendar
