  • This is a teardown of a Shimano 105 R7000 right hand shifter. The mechanism is slightly different from the 5800, but overall the disassembly is the same.
    I compare the mechanisms side by side and try to figure out how the new one works and how it differs from the 5800. I get it mostly right, though there are parts where I'm wrong, and times where I completely miss details.
    I apologize for the terrible autofocus. For my reassembly, I'll make sure to turn it off.

    Thanks for the teardown. My right shifter don't retract when shifting to a larger cog. Sometimes if only 1 gear but if two gears upshift it consistently don't retract, so I have to manually push back the shifting mechanism. Can I fix that?

    Hello!
    Is the teardown for the R7020 the same for the R7000? I can't seem to remove the long pin holding the levers. I have removed the C-clip on one side and tried to hammer it down using enough force which I think would not break the plastic/case holding the entire shifter. Am I missing something else, like another C-clip? Or am I not just using enough force? Thank you!

      I've had problems pushing it one way, but pushing it out the other way worked. Be careful with removing the lever- you may need to separate it from the hydraulic piston first.

    Mark, Have you done a teardown on the 105 7000 left hand shifter? In normal position mine does not work, but if the bike is inverted it does. From what I am reading these have a pretty good failure rate with these symptoms.

    • @aliancemd
      @aliancemd ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you find what the issue was? Note that "left hand" shifter, from what I've heard, can mean different things based on country: UK means rear-derailleur, Rest of the World means front derailleur.
      In my case the springs have weakened and don't do their job - when I inverted it, it sometimes worked.

    Good vidéo ! I have a question, the little circlip for shimano is ever black ?
    Because I have a 7020 , and im in trouble if the circlip is black or not

    • @amanwithamultitool

      Circlips are usually either black or silver. I don't think the color matters in this case.

    HI, This is a great video. It will help me a lot as I want to use this shifter to operate a dropper post on my gravel bike. In your opinion, should i remove the pawls and leave the ratchet discs in there or should swap the ratchet discs for washers/spacers without teeth? Obviously I will use the left shifter but I don't think the mechanism will be different. Thanks for your answer!

    • @amanwithamultitool
      @amanwithamultitool  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd first try using the shifter as it is. It takes a bit of throw to shift to the larger chainring, and if your dropper cable doesn't even move that far, then you're never going to "click" into that far position.
      if you do need to disable the upper gear, my concern would be deforming the aluminum cable spool when it snaps back into position. You can be careful about releasing the lever, but fingers can slip, and it might not be easy to be careful sometimes. I would remove the primary ratchet disc and leave the upper pawls, hoping to spread the impact force over two endstops- one of the upper pawls hitting the big tooth on the cable spool and the stamped steel of the frame catching on a lip of the cable spool. You will need to keep the secondary gear ratchet disc otherwise you wouldn't be able to move the cable spool at all to pull the cable.
      If you don't plan on using the shifter with a front derailleur, it would be best to just grind down the two(?) shorter teeth on the primary ratchet disc so the pawl would never catch in the outer chainring position.

    Great video, Mark. I found your 5800 disassembly just the other day after my Dura Ace 9001 right shifter stopped shifting. The shifting mechanism looks exactly the same as the 5800 - I'm guessing the materials might just be different for weight savings. I took it apart based on your video and discovered that the large upper pawl was physically broken at its weakest point. Do you have any suggestions on where I might be able to get a new pawl from for cheap? I'd hate to spend $100+ for a pawl...

    • @amanwithamultitool
      @amanwithamultitool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it's just the pawl, maybe anything from Sora to Dura Ace would work, so find an inexpensive new or used shifter to scavenge from? Anything that routes the shifter cable under the bar tape.

      @@amanwithamultitool That's what I'll do. I came across a friend who has a crashed Ultegra 6800 that's been sitting in a box. The lever and outside is a mess, but the internals are intact. Should be a pretty easy swap. Thanks again!

    Great work Mark, can you help me. I have an ultra 8020 that won't shift up. Shifting down to bigger gear is working fine, however when I try to shift up (going to bigger cog on derailleur) it doesn't move. interestingly when I hold the shifter upside down, it works all fine. I wonder what has gone wrong. Thanks, see if you can provide some input. Regards.

    • @neerajsheoran5737
      @neerajsheoran5737 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Realised that secondary pawl spring was broken and thus stayed engaged while in upright position and as I turned it upside down, it got disengaged due to gravity and worked fine. Inserted a makeshift spring using paper clip, wonder how long it shall last, worked well for a long 100 km Sunday right today though.
      Thanks once again, couldn't have done it without your video.

    • @amanwithamultitool
      @amanwithamultitool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd try to use a bent safety pin instead, if you can find one ling enough. A paper clip can't flex far before it stays bent. I think a safety pin can usually flex farther.

    do you believe it s possible to change the 10s shift mecanism of the tiagra 4720 by a 11s shift mecanism of the r7000 or 7020?

    • @amanwithamultitool
      @amanwithamultitool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably. It is probably easier to just get the R7000 shift mechanism and install it in a Tiagra lever- it probably will drop right in.

    Your little vice-grips are hilarious lol. I have the most common problem with these r7000 shifters. My right (mostly the right shifter but also the left) are starting to literally lock up when trying to up-shift. Problem just started a week ago. Replaced both lines, still the same. The downshift works perfectly every time. I tried that shim trick too, no-go. Really annoying, since I just got these 2 years ago. Now what am I supposed to do? Take them back to the bike shop to return them? And IF I get new ones (no warranty), will they do the same thing? Sounds like a design flaw to me.
    Thanks man. Great video, learned a lot about these (annoying lol) shifters.

    • @amanwithamultitool
      @amanwithamultitool  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's been so long, I've forgotten what the shim trick is. My upshifting issue has been fat fingering things and slightly pushing on the downshift lever at the same time- push that just a bit and the upshift lever pushes freely inboard. I just have to be more deliberate when pushing on the lever, especially when wearing full finger gloves.
      Another problem is when the grease starts to get a bit thick and the pawl doesn't move fast enough to catch on the ratchet. The effect is the same as above- the upshift lever freely swings inboard. This happens more often when it's cold. I just let the lever snap back and try again until it finally catches. This might get more common as the grease ages and gets more gummy. A lighter oil on the pawl would be a more lasting fix, though that might require degreasing the whole shifter first, then regreasing it.

    It's a shame it goes out of focus... I was interested in a little plastic thing(looks like it might separate springs), to see if it's positioned where it should be and there was just a split second where it should of been visible but it's out of focus...

    • @amanwithamultitool
      @amanwithamultitool  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 5800 teardown or reassembly videos might have the part you're looking for in focus. They're pretty much the same construction besides a slight difference in one of the gear ratchets, a pawl, and the downshift return spring; and a different threading for the center axle. I've mauled the fine threads at the end of the center axle, which is preventing me from finishing putting the shifter back together again.
