95% of the time it's gunked up... They are built like tank and will literally last longer than your bike. If you don't want to open it on first try, just spray some WD 40, let it sit for half an hour, and try to up/down shift again, you maybe able to just free the gunk that way.

How would u know whether it was broken or just gunked up before you tear it apart, I'm looking at a bike that won't shift. Thanks in advance 👍
