Why Did Poland Order Nearly 50 South Korean FA-50 Fighters?

- According to Defense24, Poland has decided to order 48 KAI FA-50 light fighters from South Korea. These fighters will be used to train the country's air force pilots, as well as support F-16 fighters if necessary. In addition, if the FA-50 proves capable, Poland can order other Korean fighters such as the KF-21 Boramea.

Even though FA-50s cannot completely replace F-16s, there are things Poland is currently doing with F-16s which can be replaced by FA-50s. This will free up those F-16s for more important roles.
Also, pilots trained on FA-50s can easily move onto F-16s as the transition time is very short. That was one of the main reason why FA-50(TA-50) was developed.
They are replacing the Su 22 and old stick Mig 29. The F-16 and F-35A are replacing the higher end assets and there are also a lot of drones in the mix.
FA-50PL version will have AESA radar which KF21 has. And modernized heavy weapon systems. It will be the most developed training jet ever and even some parts will be better than F16's ones. This is fact.
The FA-50 is a low-class fighter in Korea. This is not to say that LOW-class fighters are worthless fighters. Of course, the FA-50 isn't the best fighter. However, fighters have different missions and roles for each type. So the fighter must understand the HIGH-LOW concept. Operation and maintenance costs and aircraft maintenance are also important issues. Not all fighters can be configured as FA-35s because the FA-35 is the best, and not all fighters can be configured as FA-50s because the FA-50 is cheap. I am convinced that the FA-50 is a worthy fighter that can play some role in Poland's envisioned air force reinforcement.

I saw in the video that you introduced the FA-50 parameters, and the numbers were almost wrong. I will edit it and upload it myself. First of all, it's 4.5t, not 3.7t, with 7 hard points. And the maximum speed of Mach 1.5 or higher is about 1,800 kilometers. The FA-50 block 20 is replaced by the AESA radar from the existing mechanical radar and is simultaneously loaded with ARMAAM. Additionally, the existing double seat will be replaced with a single seat to refuel the empty rear seat. And then you put on an aerial refueling probe. This is not certain, but the engine can also be replaced from F404 to F414. All figures will then enjoy a slight increase. More important than the above specifications, the FA-50 is 70 percent similar to the F-16 and the component compatibility is 85 percent shared. The FA-50 infrastructure will be replaced as soon as possible by a small renovation of the existing F-16 infrastructure in Poland. And the advantage of fast delivery, and the utilization rate is over 90 percent. All of this worked so well that defense exports and imports were successful. Wszystko prawda. Tylko że Fa15 może wziąć tylko 2 rakiety air to air jeżeli faktycznie miałby walczyć z innym samolotem. A to dlatego że maksymalne przeciążenie to 8G. No i oczywiście FA15 może walczyć ale dopiero w wersji jaka ma być dostarczona od 2025 . Tam będzie przede wszystkim zmieniony radar i zostaną zintegrowane pociski średniego zasięgu do zwalczania innych samolotów. No bo Blok10 ma rakiety tylko krótkiego zasięgu więc niewiele może zdziałać. W ogóle FA15 bardziej będzie się nadawać do zwalczania celów naziemnych w przyszłej konfiguracji. I w porównaniu do obecnych samolotów Su22 wypada rewelacyjnie.

Korea’s indigenous arms industry is on fire. The K2 MBT and this plane as well as the upgraded K-9 Thunder will be giving the traditional arms exporter some serious competition.
FA50 with AESA radar with long range AAM will able to shoot down Su35 able to see far from distance.
Do you really think Polish government didn't talked to Washington and Germany before making deal with S Korea? They were getting same crap as S Korea thus trying to work together to build its weapon systems within Poland facing real war next door. Poland history is similar to Korea facing Germany and Russia like S Korea facing China and Japan thus must able to build it's own weapon systems.
Poland dont talk withe germany about anything conencted with arms. Poland is independent country we will not buy anything from germany and as less as possible from USA.

@James Cunliffe James it's hard telling without seeing the plane in person! cameras anymore you don;t know what's real and what's an distortion due to some quirk in it! the wing roots more likely electronics and gun mounting than fuel if it's fuel burning it will shift center of gravity!
@James Cunliffe yeah but the farther forward the shift happens the more effect it has and that would be an awful venerable spot for a fuel tank! more likely to take a hit there!
A blend of F 18 and F 16! Good for training and light attack at a very reasonable operating cost...

Thai Gripen is older version while Philippines FA50 is newer version with new sensors and radar likely have better fire control systems. S Korea is known to have one of the best fire control systems in the world leading electronics. Recent dog fights between Thai Gripen and Philippines FA50 in Pitch Black war exercise prove that FA50 can shoot down other bigger opponents with right pilots.
KF21 flew supercruise and has frequency jumping EW, AESA radar and communication equipment superior to China and Russia and will likely pass the US technology since S Korea lead in electronics and IT tech. Javelin takes 30 seconds to cool its seeker to fire but S Korean Raybolt fire and forget ATGW takes 5 seconds proven by Saudi army in Yemen and cost less than half of Javelin. S Korean KP SAM has over 90% accuracy able to fight off EW but US Stinger have 70% accuracy.
The stinger will not fire against very 3:14 low altitude targets.

It should make a good patrol and troop support fighter if nothing else. As mentioned the cost per flight hour is low and the procurement cost is low. It is a good, life multi-role platform.
They are going to be much more capable than the Russian Su 22 and old Mig 29 they are going to replace. The rest of the Russian aircraft are being replaced by the F-35A.
Actally f50pl will repkace su 22 and some role of mig 29 task what cant be fufiled by F50 pl will be doing f16 and F50 is great training plane because cocpit and some element looks and works like in f 16 and Poland are intrested for buy another f 35 or what is more posiłek for some f15FX because they cant buy new f16 and dosent want buy plane from another country beside USA or Korea (kf 21).
It is much like the small BF-109 in WWII, but fast and can turn with the best. Never judge a fighter by it's size, when it has a top speed of 1150 MPH or Mach 1.5.

It's good to see S Korean weapons sold to defend a nation but same time sad to see countries have to build up their military again for safety in 21st century. We thought people grew up and done with big wars except N Korea.

Jedyny dobry powód to taki że Polska otrzyma lepszą cenę na czołgi i artylerię i/albo korzystniejszy transfer technologii. No albo też nie mamy po prostu pieniędzy . Przypominam że Polsce proponowany jest Eurofighter w najnowszej wersji z natychmiastowa dostawa. Natomiast samoloty fa, które będą się do czegokolwiek nadawać otrzymamy 2025-2028. Bo pierwsze 16 w wersji blok 10 nawet ze starymi Mig29 nie mają szans

Before others complaining about buying S Korean weapons, ask if the US and Germany has enough chips to build their weapons and offer transfer of technology to Poland. This wasn't just regular business deal. If you worry money or politics over people's lives then sure buy from Washington. Once Washington has leash on your country they will never try to let go like what happened in S Korea. Washington is refusing to transfer control of S Korean military with every kind of excuses and don't want to see Korea unified so US weapons manufacturers can milk billions from S Korea. Every S Koreans knows this. As soon as Poland rely on the US weapons manufacturers then same will happen to Poland. Poland asked for strategic partnership able to transfer technology for Poland defense which S Korea understood with it's own history and gave what Poland needed to build them in Poland so able to resupply parts inside Poland for war.
There is still a DMZ Zone, they are still at "war". How can you bring together 2 vastly different Koreas together? You cant as it currently is, southern Korea is by far better then north Korea and would have its Economy devastated absorbing North Korea. North Korea wont give up the dictatorship it has or Accept a merger with south korea.. they wont ever be fully at Peace.
US is an Ally of South Korea, US is still slightly at war with North Korea, and North Korea has Americas USS Pueblo ship, many in military are still upset over that. S.K. is its own independent country. US Government cooperates with SK.
If Russia invade Poland thru Belarus, then the battle field should happen in Belarus to reduce Polish population from suffering while planting land mines around Poland on eastern front to stop Russians advancing. S Korea is one of few countries still makes landmines and cluster bombs to stop N Korean invasion. K239 MRL has long range missiles to cover Baltic Sea to stop Russian marines from landing from sea. Poland should also invest in drones to increase intelligence gathering from eastern front and Baltic sea while working with NATO spy satellites to monitor troop movement in eastern front. Cluster bombs like CBU97 are important against major Russian armor threats which can be used on FA50. CBU97 has cluster antiarmor explosives thus 48 FA50 can wipe out thousands of tanks and APC thrust into Poland. FA50 with AESA radar can also patrol over battle field to hunt down attack helicopters and ground attack fighters like SU25 which been used heavily in Ukraine war.

Great deal by Poland as this is not going to be the main fighter but a supplement to f35 and f16. Also gaining knowledge for Polands arm industry is a big win
