They played at my college in the early 70's. My boyfriend (now husband) ran the lights for them. I have loved them ever since. I saw them in concert last spring. They still have it all ... musicianship and showmanship. Thanks for this one, especially, Phil!
I am from MI but had a Roommate from MI who went to University of MI.. He was in charge of hiring bands and Set up .. He had Dinner with the Band Heart..
WHAT A VOICE Dennis D has! This song is sugary enough to give you diabetes if you;re not careful. WIth that said it it's brilliantly written and the melodies are as potent! On the live side - I had the privilege of opening up for Styx in 2011 and I will concur with you Fil that their live abilities are exactly as you mentioned. Very powerful live act even though De young was not with them on the tour i did the support show for. Great analysis!
I was at this show . This was at what was know as the Blockbuster Pavilion in 1996. I sat directly to the left of Tommy Shaw left of stage in the riser seats. There was a beautiful tribute to the late John Pannozzo that night.
The Grand Illusion and pieces of eight where my two favorite albums. Didn't care too much when they turned pop. They were definitely a solid band. Behind These castle walls is probably my all-time favorite song some very good vocals

Thanks so much for doing this song Fil...This song came out the year my husband and I got engaged. This has always been "our song"....God bless and thanks for the memories.

Babe was mine and my husband's song, he just passed away 3 month ago (**sniff, sniff*). Still get teary eyed when I hear it. But am glad you picked this performance. Great song!!!!! Another band at the time was The Eagles, group of great talent.
Nice job, Fil. All I can say is that I feel fortunate to be living in the era when Styx is making music, and even more lucky to have been around to witness the time when they were releasing all of those musical gems.
I was a senior in high school when this song came out. Where it may not have been the first Styx song I had heard, it was the one that made me fall in love with their music.
Dennis didn't leave, he got kicked out of the band he co-founded with Chuck and John. DDY is the absolute best ever! His voice to this day still sounds as crystal clear as it did back in the day. He and his band he has now, that's a Styx concert 100%. For me anyway. This is how worth seeing him and his band is. You should come over and see DDY and his band. It would be one of the best concerts you would have ever seen in your life.
You really nailed this one, as usual. It’s kinda funny that just last night, I watched the VH1 Behind the Music story of Styx. So sad about all of the artistic differences. I was lucky enough to see them live. Another amazing band that was a big part of my younger days. Cheers!
I took all 4 of my sons to this concert in 1996. I saw Styx so many times over the years. I miss seeing Dennis DeYoung playing with them, especially since it was him and the Panazzo brothers that started Styx. Dennis is an incredible singer and songwriter. I even saw him play Pontius Pilate in the Broadway touring show of Jesus Christ Superstar along with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson, who were also Jesus and Judas in the 1970's movie. Dennis also had written a musical of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. So many wonderful songs, albums and memories.
The performance may have been 1996, but the song was originally released in 1979. It is a song that has always been special to me due to relating the lyrics to my mother who passed away earlier this year. So thank you for highlighting this song. I look forward to the day when I will be with her again. Keep in mind I was only 8 when it was released. Thank you. I wish you peace, love, and happiness to you as well as everyone that you love.
I'm from Illinois and so is the band Styx. It's awesome through always lived in the same state that the band Styx is from. There is some fabulous fantastic music from Illinois in the Chicago area and the Midwest portion of the United States.Great reveiw as always Fil 👍. Rock on man 💪
Grand Illusion yeah!! Styx , one of the biggest bands of my youth, play one of their songs and you're right back there re- living your memory again. 🙂Thanks Fil. 🤗🤗
What I appreciate about you, Fil, is that you are able to critique things on a technical level, yet you still exude a childlike excitement about the music you love. Really like the pieces you choose to analyze.
Styx was my go-to band when the Moody Blues went on hiatus in the 70s. Herb Alpert at A&M records, knew talent when he heard it. (Thanks for signing them). Thank you Fil, you truly filled in the gaps and I appreciate your ability to convey the real-time nuances of the performance. You should teach/coach... (did I just say that... lol.)
My ex husband always called me Babe. When they played this at the concert I cried and sang along. We had a five year old and 10 year old. I wanted a family . He didn't. The memories hurt sometimes. This is so such a blessing for your husband to write and sing a song for you.."Thanks again, Fil.❤️🌹❤️
Glen Burtnick is a friend and a local hero here on the Jersey shore and a legend in the Asbury Park area, SOAP (Sound Of Asbury Park). Still going strong with the great Weeklings and other gigs. Styx was huge for while. Their ballads were always in the playlist when you hoped to score. Yes, it was BACK in the day.
Thanks Fil, for reminding me how good these guys were! I don't hear any of their music anymore on the classic rock radio stations. I used to do a lot of driving with my work back in the early 80's, and these guys got me through some long boring drives. I really miss this kind of music.👍😎🎸🎶
Saw them live (when they were still young and hungry) in the mid 70s as a back up band for Aerosmith. One of the best live bands I ever saw. They were amazing. Thanks, Fil, for bringing them into the forefront again.
One of their best ballads. Always loved the ride symbol on the drums when the chorus kicked in. ( You can hear it better on the recorded version ) It just kept it steady and fresh while the harmonies kept the highlights going. A perfect blend. Fil you pay close to detail as well. I noticed the harmonics on the guitar near the end of the song as well blending with the keyboard. Nice notice.
They were huge when I was a little. I remember them for having some of the best vocals of any band at the time. Great analysis pointing out how stacked they were in talent. I think they are underrated and overlooked.
Wow...I just watched this a couple of days ago. Totally great concert. This drummer is a machine! Guitarists are sick. Bass player tremendous. And of course, DeYoungs singing, song writing and keyboards bring it all together. Too bad about the drummer who passed... they mentioned during the concert and dedicated a song to him. Didn't realize it was his twin brother who took over for him. I'm a child of the 60's and 70's music and this group is in my top ten of that era. Just tremendous !Thx for doing this Fil!
Thanks Fil!!...I love Styx!!!...so many great hits over the years! I got to see them twice with REO in the last 20 years! I love Dennis DeYoung's solo work, one year he came to our City's street festival! My absolute favorite song of his solo career was "Desert Moon" it reminds me of my dear departed mother she loved that song and video so much...🙏😢✌❤🤘😊

I saw these guys in 1978 on the "Pieces of Eight" tour and again in 1983 on the "Kilroy was Here" tour. They played this when I saw them in '83 as it came out on their "Cornerstone" album in 1979.
Styx a great band, love their songs. The Grand Illusion what a great album. Yes insanely talented group of musicians but so underrated as a band. Thanks for sharing Fil and an awesome analysis, thank you....
In 2009 Dennis contributed a song to a Christmas compilation album. The song entitled “when I hear a Christmas song” is a wonderful tune and his voice really shines! The album entitled “The Sounds of Christmas” was available on iTunes.

Styx are an amazing band. When I saw them a couple years ago they did this musical interlude that covered many genres of music including hardcore and heavy metal. The musicianship exhibited blew me away. But their early stuff from the early days is really the best. Solid, professional, and rockin'. And I lust for that guitar Tommy's playing in this video. UH! Styx such a great band! Saw them live in 1980. Tight musically and phenomenal vocally. Stellar! Such a wide varied amount of great material, from sweet & mellow to rip a strip off you kick ass Rock! When l was touring with my band in the 70s and 80s most of what we did was original material written by myself or the other guitarist and myself, but we did throw in some covers. One l remember always getting a great response when we did it live was Renegade by Styx. That's my stroll down memory lane for the day lol. Thanks for another great review Fil!😎🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
Once again Fil, a great breakdown and trip down memory lane. I discovered Styx around 75 or 6 with the release of Styx 2 here in Australia then in 77 ' I think ', I bought The Grand Illusion and it became and still is my favorite album of all time, I play tracks from it at least once every couple weeks and annoy the hell out of my grandkids with their albums. I have to say that I am a Tommy Shaw tragic. I started to learn guitar in my early 20's so that I could one day play guitar like him, ( I know he'll never be a Guthrie Govan or Tommy Emanuel but he's my guitar hero) and here I am in my mid 60's still trying to sound like him and failing.
When Fil mentions at 9:24 that "At this point, [in 1976] John quit the band...", it's important to note that this was not John Panozzo, the drimmer (the only "John" Fil had mentioned up to this point in the vid), but rather John Curulewski, a guitarist/vocalist. That was the vacancy that Tommy Shaw filled.
God I remember listening to this song in the late 70s Fil! What a great band they were! All the members were so multi talented....just brilliant! Really great Fil! Cheers Mario! 😎🤘🤘
Seen these guy's. Really good live. PIPE'S IN THIS BAND. AMAZING PIPES. Listen to this. Perfection. LIVE. You just paused after I said this and said the same thing. THEY REALLY WERE THIS GOOD LIVE. I miss those days.
This just came up and it's funny. I just took my 3 year old grandson and a couple of my sons to see Styx . He had a great time! I took my 4 sons to see them when they were teens. Multi generational!
Fil mentioned singing abilities without auto tune. Here is one of the best. Great choice, Fil. Thanks so much. Pieces of Eight. Awesome album. Blue collar man...oh yea.
Saw them back in the day and a few times in recent years. I had the opportunity to do a photojournalism story a couple years ago. The band was very chill and Tommy Shaw was very gracious to fans wanting photos. Will always like this talented band👍
Yes! Excellent analysis. The Styx vocals and harmonies really set them apart. Styx is a supergroup unparalleled. Would love to see Dennis get back with them soon. But his solo Styx shows are nearly as good as everything the original band was doing. Check him out!
Loved "Come Sail Away" and "Suite Madam Blue" as a kid. Saw DDY around 2012 at a fall harvest festival in Connecticut. Couldn't believe how good his pipes sounded. Was a treat. On the other side I thought they jumped the shark with Kilroy and never recovered.
Thanks Mr Fil for doing Styx analysis. I've seen several concerts, and Styx remains in top 3 of concerts I've seen. (Wish you would do Crystal Ball for one of your cover songs.) Much appreciated Fil..RAWK!!!
We loved Seventies Styx. John’s favourite though, is You Need Love from Styx 2. It was ubiquitous on radio in Hamilton, Ontario in the mid seventies in a commercial for Dragway Park, Cayuga. Awesome.
You Need Love--That's a great track. Great harmonies, sounds like Yes but in an up tempo pop style. It had all the elements of their early sound. And JY was the lead vocalist on that track and was more active in singing lead and writing songs back in the first few records.
I can remember this song playing on the radio every morning when my sister and I got ready for school. She always turned it up. And if she was having trouble waking me up she's turn it up louder lol. She was and still is a great big sister .
Amen!
I remember my brother playing it on his 8 track when he drove us to school... :)

Oh, Mama, I've been years on the lam and had a high price on my head
Lawman said, 'Get him dead or alive.' Now it's for sure he'll see me dead
Dear Mama, I can hear you cryin', you're so scared and all alone
Hangman is comin' down from the gallows and I don't have very long
The jig is up, the news is out
They've finally found me
The renegade who had it made
Retrieved for a bounty
Never more to go astray
The judge will have revenge today
On the wanted man
Oh, Mama, I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law
Hangman is comin' down from the gallows and I don't have very long
The jig is up, the news is out
They've finally found me
The renegade who had it made
Retrieved for a bounty
Never more to go astray
This will be the end today
Of the wanted man
The wanted man
And I don't wanna go, oh, no
Oh, Mama, don't let them take me
No, no, no, I can't go
Hey, hey
I saw them live around '96-97 and they were fucking awesome.
Cool!
Love your analysis, love this group. Thank you.
Dennis is the definition of Maestro. Thanks man. You and I could back up Dennis, and be Styx. :)
That 96 concert in Chicago was Styx at the peak of their powers . Awesome concert !
God I remember listening to this song in the late 70s Fil! What a great band they were! All the members were so multi talented....just brilliant! Really great Fil! Cheers Mario! 😎🤘🤘
Seen these guy's. Really good live. PIPE'S IN THIS BAND. AMAZING PIPES. Listen to this. Perfection. LIVE. You just paused after I said this and said the same thing. THEY REALLY WERE THIS GOOD LIVE. I miss those days.
Great band, great review, Fil!! Cheers!! :)
What a great voice, band, song and performance.
This just came up and it's funny. I just took my 3 year old grandson and a couple of my sons to see Styx . He had a great time! I took my 4 sons to see them when they were teens. Multi generational!
Fabulous Harmony 👍😁😁😁 love Styx
Fil mentioned singing abilities without auto tune. Here is one of the best. Great choice, Fil. Thanks so much. Pieces of Eight. Awesome album. Blue collar man...oh yea.
Huge DDY fan - best voice in rock
Saw them back in the day and a few times in recent years. I had the opportunity to do a photojournalism story a couple years ago. The band was very chill and Tommy Shaw was very gracious to fans wanting photos. Will always like this talented band👍
I remember this song back in the 1980's. They still sound great
Yes! Excellent analysis. The Styx vocals and harmonies really set them apart. Styx is a supergroup unparalleled. Would love to see Dennis get back with them soon. But his solo Styx shows are nearly as good as everything the original band was doing. Check him out!
I saw Dennis perform earlier this year and he is still great and his wife is with him on stage.
