A wonderful video to watch James. The faded lettering on the loco and hopper is excellent.

Loved watching this, I've got a windowsill in my model room where something like this would fit beautifully. Plans are forming in my head!

Great video James, I have 586 in original Milwaukee Road colours and they are fantastic locos. They really do encourage you to "drive" them, and it's so rewarding.

Nice addition, James! This is a super model, both the prototype and at scale. Short length ideal for switching, yet with six axles AND uneven axle spacing which was extremely rare on a domestic EMD (I believe they were export model trucks). Looks great on Beaverbrook.
I bought one from ScaleTrains and liked it so much, I bought a second. Both of them in FEPASA (Chile) livery just to make them more obscure. Still searching for some crew audio in Spanish to add!

I have had the locomotive for a long time - but I've only just 'refinished' this side to feature HMLX markings. The prototypes are full of character, and seemed perfect for the Canadian branches - probably already well served by GMD1 and RSC-14s by this stage though...

It's an excellent job on the faded Wisconsin Central lettering. If you wanted to be a bit cheeky, given its the WC heritage, you could add a Three Beasties logo and enhance the story that the unit came to Hilton-Mears after an unsuccessful trial on EWS.

I remember when CN worked this and how they tended to use pairs of four-axle engines. That curve, down the cement spur to Holcim, is just punishing (both S-curved and also downhill). The SDL39 looks so attractive it makes me wish we had more like it on the fleet. I worried it might be slippery but it worked just fine and I’m not thinking, as much as I might have yesterday, that we should try pairing one of the GP9’s with it and use the GP9 to start and the SDL39’s to keep the train moving? Either way, 645’s are our future and it’s exciting to see this out on the road.

Thanks Chris - yes, the lighter loadings that made the operation unattractive to G&W when TT folded has meant that we're getting away with just the SDL39 - as you say, it might have been exciting to see a lash up, but this is a lot less hassle and saves fuel too... we still have the Sweep here though, if the autumn and winter conditions make things difficult for the new arrival!

What American railroad still uses an SDL39 ?

A really cathartic ops session. I would love to know a few details of the base models of the stock and locos you use.

There is quite a bit about that sort of thing on my website, if you take a read through the Beaverbrook back catalogue. I think I put the link in the description - thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.

Sounds add so much to the operation of the Beaverbrook layout, is there a reason why you haven't explored it on your other layouts. Incidentally love the latest book.

      Cost!
I’ve always said DCC sound is only for the Canadian HO stock on Beaverbrook and haven’t once been tempted to stray from this…
I’m also not sure it adds much in a tinny speaker in N…
I have pondered using a DCC sound decoder to ‘drive’ the layout in N - I’ve a project in mind with just a Farish 08 where that would work. This would give me the sound and bass linked to the motion but without having to deal with pickups, stay alive etc.
I suppose I also like the contrast- sometimes I don’t want the noise.
Glad you enjoyed the new book!

Hi Alan - thank you that is very kind. This is an 8ft long shelf, that varies between 9 and 12 inch deep. It is Peco Code 83 (in the main - there is a yard of Code 70 (NOT Code 75) on the end of the Co-op spur - back right). Glad you enjoyed it and good luck with your own project!
