      Hi Thomas, I use the N gauge track from British Finescale. Wayne offers code 40 bullhead on wooden and flatbottom on concrete sleepers. The sleepers are moulded on webs and you cut them off, put them in a jig and thread in the rail. It’s not quick, but it’s quite nice to build up - I put a good podcast or music on!

    Yes Yes Yes :-) More please! Even with just one angle. Love the Couplings (did you make an video with how you did that?). Coupling & uncoupling is one of my biggest concern. And by the way... why dont you use DCC? I have one 2 Axle shunter running under DCC with a Stay Alive and he runs so smooth (i changed all the neccecary CV to give me max shunting Speed of 15km/h and a verry slow start and braking deceleration - did that with all my Locos). I run Timesaver and 5-3-3 or 7-4-4 Inglenook on Desktop without Landscape.

      @@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways Thank you for your continued hard work. I find your guidance through your books to be delightful, refreshing, and truly inspiring. I’ve been on a similar journey myself, where the available space requires a thoughtful and measured approach. Unfortunately, I decided to push through the dreaded “doesn’t feel right” instinct, and now, with just the tracks in place, I’m realising that it definitely doesn’t feel right after all. While it’s all a valuable learning experience, I now find myself needing to reconsider my approach. However, there’s always a silver lining. The prospect of building a new, simpler design is actually quite exciting. It means I can take advantage of Templot to 3D print prototypical-looking track, which I believe discourages cramming too much into the layout. Scale-length turnouts and points are quite large, and I think this new direction will help achieve a more balanced and realistic design. Thank you again for your invaluable insights.

    Morning James, I bought a copy at ExpoEM in Shipley on Sunday, but I haven't looked at it yet as yesterday was a bit frantic... It was my last shift working for Southern, after nearly 19 years, and 11 at the current station, so I had to get all the stuff I'd accumulated over time removed ready to handit over! Following that was some house move related stuff, the result being that we've now exchanged contracts on our new home and will be moving in a couple of weeks. Planning to have a bit of a laid back morning, part of which will be a sit down and leisurely look through the Companion, I'm sure this will help me chill out 😊 Cheers, Simon.

      @@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways I also like it because I can more easily justify new purchases if they’re purposeful, I am taken with the idea of a cement works, so because I don’t already have strings of rolling stock sat idly in boxes, it will be easier for me to justify buying the requisite stock The slight fly in the ointment is I am also considering n gauge for that, so that makes it a little harder to justify since it’ll be another new scale for me, We shall see, I have an O16.5 sand quarry to finish first 🤣

      I have realised that whilst some models transcend layouts others are beholden to them. • @TPW900GP35
    @TPW900GP35 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Hey, nice layout! As long as it works for you, that’s good. I like that Geep! Nice sound from it! Sounds pretty realistic! Is that a real railroad and paint scheme? If you made it up, good job! I like that logo! Seems to indicate a “good service road”! You were wondering about how railroads work. It all starts with the customer. Consignee A orders a certain quantity of goods from shipper A. He orders a suitable car from the railroad and makes the product. The railroad spots the empty on the siding, the shipper loads the car and makes up a bill of loading. He calls the railroad to tell them the car is ready to be picked up. The railroad gets the bill of lading, makes up a waybill so everyone concerned knows what’s in the car and where it’s going. The railroad picks up the car and sends it on it’s way to it’s consignee and destination. If the car needs weighed, the railroad weighs the car, so they know how much to charge for moving the car based on the cars weight and published rates. Some shippers have an agreement with the railroad so the car doesn’t have to be weighed. The shippers weight will be used to calculate the freight charge. The words, “Shippers load, weight and count” or “shippers load and count” must appear on the waybill for this to apply. Otherwise, the railroad can weigh the car and all weighing charges are born by the shipper. The consignee receives the car, unloads it, and notifies the railroad that the car is empty and ready to be picked up. The freight charges are either “prepaid” or “collect”. Prepaid means the shipper pays the freight charges; collect means the consignee pays the freight charges. They work that out between them at the start as far as how they will handle absorbing the freight charge. It’s all done on computer, now, so I don’t know how much paper is involved. When I worked for the railroad back in the mid ‘70’s to early ‘80’s, there was a lot of paper typed up. Computers were just getting a good start and some things were put on it. Hope that helps. The car is forwarded via the routing the shipper chose. The car may actually be handled per interchange agreements between roads, as far as the actual junction where the exchange will take place. Which can complicate things! The railroad that receives the freight charges then must divide up that money and send it to each road that handled the car, again, per agreed upon percentages or universal published percentages. That’s all I can think of right now. There are situations where the consignee has to pay for the product ahead of time, before the car can be delivered to the customer. This is per the shippers request. I had that a lot with grain shipments from elevator to barge terminal. The bill of lading was a special type called an order bill of lading. The railroad had to note on the waybill in the consignee section that it was, “consigned to the order of shipper A Grain Co. Notify consignee A Grain Co”. The consignee had to have a sight draft drawn on his bank, and deliver it to the shippers bank, probably electronically, and notice thereof given to the railroad agent, before the cars could be spotted and unloaded. Anyway, that’s all I have. Hope that helps!

    That's a fab little layout. It's not helping my want for a 9mm gauge layout myself, considering I can't not justify it when it's so small!

      Glad to have been of help - 009 does work in small spaces if you’re careful with the prototype, use only small 0-4-0 locomotives and short 2 axle stock.

    One of my favourites amongst your layouts, good to see it out again. The same format would work in a variety of gauges and scales. A tram museum on 16.5mm would work well, motorised 1/64 Corgis or even Bachmann and Smallbrook Studio On30 trolleys.

    What is the depth of the layout at its deepest ( front to back)?

    • @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways
      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's deepest in the middle, where the front spur is situated. This is around 14". It's narrower at each end, more like 12". The gentle flow to the edge of the board is quite visually pleasing. The pelmet is just over 14" the whole length so light is fairly evenly covered over the layout.

    The pace of the operating session is so comfortable. You’ve described its candence before and I find it easy to feel in this video as the crew works their way along the spur. Thanks, again, for inviting us to join in.
