      Yes I bought S1H cca a year ago for video quality, codecs, etc, personally, love it!!!...and believe me, that I am very, very sorry to say this, but when I need "only poor " usual family video (christmas, birthdays etc..),because of for poor AF of S1H, I better take my "very old but for me very deep known " A7R2(Slog2,Pro colour gamut + in PC in Davinci little work)+ Sony 24-70 2.8 GM lens , and yes it is only 8 bit, but I cant help myself - results are just stunning , looks like from big movie, very "filmic", DR- often i even must add more contrast- too flat even for filmic look -and A7R2 even has not slog3,slog2 far enough ! :-). Nobody ever told me something like " man, I see it is only from 8 bit" or " it is sony bad colour science "....Hmm, Life, not tests...googd light!

      @@Excalibrr1 Yes, there are some very good 8 Bit cameras you can also use. My favorite is the Canon EOS 1 D "C" DSLR. This is a Cinema 4K recording camera, but is only 8 Bit, yet the image is truly spectacular. Incredible colour science on that very high end 8 Bit camera. My point being the S1H is yielding a far superior image, but it is dependent on the quality of glass you have on the camera. The thing I like is the S1H has a sensor and on board processing, which is capable of resolving even the subtle differences in glass you use. You can even see this difference on TH-cam, which uses a wonky 8 Bit video format that crushes your blacks and highlights and makes your colors look anemic.

    Guys, please repeat the image quality test. The S1H is by no means weak in 4K full width. It's full readout in 6K, downscaled to 4K. Canon low quality 4K modes cannot compete with this because they use line skipping, also Sony cannot compete with it in any mode since it has only 4K sensor so that cannot beat the 4K coming from 6K in S1H.

    Thanks for these comparisons! I just have a few questions:
    - in the overheating scenarios, what frame rates and resolution were you shooting outside on the canon and the Sony, so that they overheated so quickly?
    - the ISO/lowlight tests, did you try overexposing the PP8 footage of the Sony at ISO 2500 with 1-2 stops, and then bringing it down in post? Did it then perform any better?
    - and regarding the dynamic range tests, did you custom white balance all of the cameras?
    Thank you!

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) We shot 24 fps in 4K 10-bit 422 for the overheating test. The Canon was shooting the HQ profile.
      2) We actually did shoot a couple clips in PP8 that were overexposed by 2 stops in order to see if that cleaned up the noise. It did! However, it does somewhat defeat the purpose of the sensitivity. There are some scenarios where you simply cannot get any more exposure besides pushing the ISO. In those scenarios I would shoot in a non-log profile. Anyway, the editor probably cut that bit out because the video was running long.
      3) I'm honestly struggling to remember the white balance for the DR test. I suspect we set all of the cameras to 5600K, as that would be the standard workflow for shooting a daylight scene with video.

    Always enjoy your comparisons! Bottom line, these are Pro cameras that have the price tags to go along with them. To me as a professional, FIRST and FOREMOST is reliability! The Sony and especially the Canon I could NEVER use on a Job because if that single FACT. Overall, image quality was great on all, however I liked the Panasonic color science most. They're all good enough in low light as I would never need the use of shooting in the dark or I would just light it up! Last, and next important, these cameras are is to do both video & still images so we don't need to care two cameras to do two different jobs. I must have a camera that can take great images as well that have the quality to sell to my clients and other markets. The Sony doesn't come close to cutting it here, the Panasonic takes great high quality images above my needs and without any issues with AF. The Canon takes the win here with the larger MP and frame & AF speed! But I don't see a need for such large image files. The BEST Hybrid crossover for me is the S1H win this hands down. So that's what I would buy.

    I would recommend doing your iso tests again with the A7s iii. I own it and you need to over expose slog 3 by 1 - 2 stops and it produces very clean results when graded

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    LOL, including the R5 in this lineup. If I want to fry eggs I might look at getting one.
    Basically this - If you want a camera that won't cook itself to a state of shutting down in under 25 minutes, get a camera that is designed to go the distance.
    Panasonic, real cameras for the real world.
    I can only imagine Canon and Sony fanboys crying that the heat test was biased. Yes, it was biased. It actually used real heat, from the Sun.

    Unlike the other cameras, by default, the S1H's V-Log does not apply any sharpening at all.

    Three elephants and a blind man suspects A7S3 overheating is heavily dependent on which lens you have on the camera. Because overheating was reproducible easily for him but not others on same review unit. But it has a passive only solution with heat sink so it will transfer heat well, which is a benefit when camera is in shade but a problem in e.g. sunny windless weather.

    A decent review with two caveats:
    1- Auto-focus is not of concern to cinematographers, and
    2- You wax a little too gooey over the Canon and Sony, and seem grudging in regards to praising the very capable Panasonic. Is brand loyalty a little at fault?
    But you (comparatively unenthusiastically) did give the S1H its due: it is an excellent, reliable, solid true cinema camera. If you shoot extended live performances, cameras that do not over-heat and have good low-light performance are critical.

      We simply started at 640 and went up by 1-stop increments. We don't really have time to do every single ISO value.The difference between 4000 and 5000 is 1/3 of a stop; so I still think you get a pretty good idea.

    Greetings, I was wondering: does it make better sense to purchase two separate devices - one camera for stills and one camera for video vs the single compromise device to do both? Given the cost of equipment I can't imagine that the delta between the two solutions would be insurmountable - what are your thoughts?

    • @kennethcmerrill
      @kennethcmerrill 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think two separate systems is ideal. I haven't seen a hybrid camera yet that does everything I want it to. A camera like the A7iii comes close, but only if you don't require high quality/high data rate footage. If you HAVE to have a hybrid system, Sony may be the best choice, but there will always be compromises if you're shooting video with what is actually a stills camera.

    • @TheSlantedLens
      @TheSlantedLens  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am coming to the same conclusion. I shoot so many 2 camera interviews that I will need 2 cinema cameras. Two C70's I guess.

      @@TheSlantedLens what is the meaning of ''crossover''?

  • @spec-productions5733
    @spec-productions5733 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Coming back and revisting. The outdoor shots where you compared the S1H soft and about equivalent to the standard Canon 4K was an "oh wow" moment for me. After rewatching the clips again, I noticed you had autofocus engaged. If you watch the color checker chart and the printing in the lower right corner, the focus shifting is clearly visible. The razor thin depth-of-field plane passes through those letters just briefly, making the letters look sharper; definitely sharper than the standard Canon. Thus, if you're doing sharpness tests with different model cameras and lenses, I'd respectfully suggest using at least F5.6 or F8 (typically the lens sweet spot where sharpness is peak), and manually focus. It does seem the S1H is sharper after further review, which makes since with the downsampled processing.
