When I decided to get back into backpacking at age 40, I bought the previous generation spark tent. The two person was perfect for solo camping - simple and reasonably lightweight for its price. Handled both wind and rain quite well.

It's a clever design and the fly is NOT Silnylon which is awesome. It's heavier thank I am used to, but that's a personal thing.

Used to be the Mountain Equiptment Co-op. Started in 1972 so climbers could purchase equiptment in bulk to make it cheaper. Sadly, no longer Canadian owned..😞

Started by some UBC grads I believe. Unfortunately, the biz was way in debt. No matter who owns the majority, I'm really glad we still have MEC given the amounts they were underwater. Recently, they've even expanded to my old home Province of NB to Moncton. Expansion is a positive sign!

I was looking at the specs online. Looks like a no nonsense shelter for the overnight beginner.

That's exactly what it is. Without being negative before I do review, I will say it's a bit heavy for me at 1.75 KG as a single hiker using it. But of course I'm coming from DCF so it's not necessarily a fair comparison

@@HowestheHike I feel the same being a DCF user. To be honest. Purchasing the Nemo Hornet OSMO Ultralight 2P at $429.95 US @REI might be the better deal. It weighs in at 2 lbs. 8 oz. with stuff sack. I see the MEC Spark lists at $474.95. I have used the Nemo but not the Spark so I really can't make a fair comparison.

That's an excellent weight/price for the Nemo. They make great gear!

MEC quality has been decreasing since it became a private American owned company...it used to be a great coop :(

I've heard that before and really honestly can't speak to it. Growing up in New Brunswick there really wasn't much exposure to it. I do know however that they were in big trouble financially and may not have survived otherwise. This is not an MEC comment necessarily, but with all of the mergers and things that are going on, I typically see most of the same product line in every outdoor store I go into. At least they have kept up their private label stuff for a little bit of variety!

      It varies. Maybe 475 CAD?
