I'm Ghanaian 🇬🇭 and I absolutely love Eritreans. I have hope things will get better someday the tide in Africa is changing and days for all African tyrant leaders are numbered. The population in Eritrea is not much, and I believe once this man is force out of office, within 10 to 20yrs Eritrea can revive the economy. If Rwanda can do it after a bad Civil War so can you, within 20yrs Rwanda has transformed its nation you'd never imagine what they went through . Use Rwanda as example. Things will get better. I'm. Very optimistic. I don't know why but I just love Eritreans so much. I care about the country and I care about the Eritrean people.
No, The economy may prosper after the Dictatorship is gone but the civilians will never benefit from these changes. Rwanda still has poor life quality and so has Ethiopia who has one of the fastest, growing economies in the world for 20-25 years, yet the people are still suffering.

Any form of tyranny is wrong. The media is not telling me nothing. I have the capacity to think for myself. People should be allow to elect their leader freely without being killed or persecuted. Tyranny doesn't makes a man victorious, it makes him arrogant of his own actions. Every human beings deserves a better life, whether if it's Eritrea of the ones in America, Asia, Middle East or Australia. So keep on speaking ignorance in the face of the truth.
I'm Ethiopian, i always close to crying when i see Eri peoples. Its very painful to loose Brothers and Sisters. i prefer visiting Asmara than London and Paris. any Eritrean who read this writing, I always misses you and Loves you....I wish all goods things, better life and blessing where ever you are.... Eritrea and its wonderful smiling people really humbled me.i was impressed at the dignity they had in their community , no religion infighting with their own country men . Pride in education for all. Eritrea has the cleanest streets in africa, no piles trash, no filth, no broken glass everywhere,no spray paint all the people were well kept. an friendly. The rest of the continent could learn something from the Eritreans they all were doing something about something. they all were working even if they weren't get paid. for their country. The world needs to support Eritreans !!!!! they will be worth the effort.
Wow. Thank you. This type of sentiments never come often from the other side, instead it is neglected. I appreciate this so much and it made my day to know empathy exists on your end. Thank you. I know this is 4 years ago lol so I hope you get to see this and smile!
What did we Ethiopians do? Seriously? Italy took the land from Ethiopia and created Eritrea in 1890. There was Ethiopia before Italians set foot on East Africa. Independence in Eritrea is nothing but greed and Superior complex designed to satisfy a selected few. Eritreans didn't want to be part of Ethiopia because Eritrea was more developed than Ethiopia due to colonization; Ethiopia was poor and Eritrea was rich and they thought that Ethiopia was going to hold them back. They did not care about over 2170 years history. Italy built them roads and buildings and little Rome and opened a lot of factories and gave them a big coastline. They didn't want to share it with Ethiopia. Sadly, you want us to apologize for that. Besides, we didn't do anything. It's their own government that is oppressing them. Speak for yourself. Don't speak for me. You can't accuse Ethiopians of something that we didn't do. Because of a map that Italians drew 100 years ago, Ethiopia became a landlocked country, with 123 millions of people. Her rich history don't mean anything to people who are ignorant and have no respect for legacy that our ancestors left behind. They didn't die for the selected few. They died for all of us. That's another story. We Ethiopians can't be held accountable for a failed state. EPLF or PFDJ fought for 20 years (- 10 ELF) and defeated Derg. And People want them to hand over the power. Are they crazy? They created Eritrea and they are going to hold the power as long as it takes. There is nothing that Eritreans can do about it. And It is not Ethiopians' fault. In fact, if Eritreans want to see a change in Eritrea. They need Ethiopia's help. They can't do it by themselves. It is near impossible. Ethiopia is the only country that can save them.
Very Sad to see people suffering from such brutal actions, I hadn't even heard of this country before. I pray for relief & love for all the abused people of Eritrea & all over the world
We Ethiopians don't want the people of Eritrea to suffer. What I personally want is the current regime overthrown and have the two countries normalize their relations.
That is for sure. We all are happy and thankful to our fighters who got us the independence. Ofcourse the President is dictator but that doesn't mean we r not happy to b independent the only thing we need is to change our govt
I’m Ethiopian I cry when I see this from the bottom of my heart sorry my brothers and sister we are family with blood it’s TPLF who did this to you not the people we always remain family and brothers
*Amhara who has occupied Eritrea under HailSelassie and Derg WE fought against the occupation of Ethiopian in Eritrea over 30 years against Haile Selassie and Derg . WE are Not Family with Ethiopians by blood the majority of Ethiopian are not even related to Eritrean Like Oromo Amhara gambela... Over 90% of Ethiopian arent related to Eritrean*
Boss Boss did I did this I’m not politician I’m simple person what ever you said you still my family you can’t judge people for there assister wrong I’m not hailselasssie or derge hate never take as no we’re
+Lam rof it is hard to create a political party and go against the government in ethiopia, but it is not totally impossible. there are different levels of oppression, so you can't really say that ethiopia's level of oppression is at the same level with eritrea. Even though i agree with you that Ethiopia is not a totally free country, because the Ethiopian government does like to arrest journalists and calls them terrorists. But you can't say that what the ethiopian government is doing is the same as eritrea.
unless you are reluctant to tell the truth , you would not compare Ethiopia with Eritrea. Freedom of speech does not mean insulting and humiliating government officials. You have to revise your knowledge on that.
How so, your EPRDF thug soldiers killed 400 Ethiopian protestors of Oromo ethnicity. That is far better? EPRDF/TPLF is a terrorist that will be removed by Ethiopian people.
This really hurts me... what people are saying. I can't take enough of the hate about Eritrea ! we just want peace and prosperity with our country🇪🇷 We are not a hateful country , we will never be a hateful country. We will always be kind to ANYONE. we treat everyone with respect . and this is coming from a middle schooler!! I'm sick of people hurting my country. long live Eritrea !!🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷
that's because you waste all of your money on cars... So what kind of car do you have ?? I would love to know...if u have one... Yea and we spend our money of schools, people, houses , and economy !!
No one will talk to you if you ask questions in Eritrea. Especially if you ask parents about their children in Sawa. They will be scared to death to say something about it as their life will definitely be at risk. It is very easy in Eritrea for someone to arrest you even shoot you. There is no justice, there is no human rights!!!!!! People get killed everyday for no apparent reason. I wonder why people compare Eritrea with North Korea? I really don't understand, because North Korean people at least they do not get starved, they probably eat 3 times a day. However, most of Eritrean people in Eritrean they don't have food to eat, they don't have water to drink. Their electric system is very very poor, most of the small and big businesses are now closed due to luck of Electricity. If you meet those people who left Eritrea recently, you will be shocked by their history. Torture, rape, imprisonment, disappearance even death are normal in Eritrea. Anyway I would like to thank you from the bottom my heart for sharing the video. Could you please upload more videos regarding life in Eritrea. The world will have some kind of insight about Eritrea. "INJUSTICE ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE" Martin Luther King (RIP)
The main cause of migration is the effects of after war, unlimited national service, the usa unilateral sanctions (to contain Eritrea until it secures its interest) which hurts the ordinary Eritrean peoples. No matter what! & Wherever we are i assure you that Every Eritrean Loves OUR Nation so much unconditionally💯%💝👌🇪🇷👍
This report is buyest, there is always two side of the story. The root cause of our problems is Ethiopia's 500,000 well mechanised army supported tanks and fighter planes are waiting to invade and attack the whole of Eritrea at any moment, infact to this day there is border clashes in a daily or weekly bases. Why don't you tell Ethiopian government to leave our territory it controls since 2001 and respect international law and Alger's peace agreement. To western governments Where were you? When we fought 30 years war since 1961 with our big neighbor Ethiopia, when we are bombarded with claster bombs and shelling in a daily basis. You can find it on youtube. Despite all odds we won our independence without anyone help with their weapons. 100 millions of Ethiopia's against 3millions Eritrea's population. 15 to 1 ratio. We lost nearly 300,000 people for independence. Since 1961 Eritreans feel betrayed by the UN and international community, who approved the annexation of Eritrea by Ethiopia which was the causes of 30 years war until 1991. Now history is repeating itself, the UN and international community, allowing Ethiopia invade and control part of Eritrean territory, in 2001 since then with their media beating war-drum. Now I am asking you, how do you expect Eritrean government to react?
What kind of fairy tales are your illiterate making up? Lmao Ethiopia was 43 million at the height of the war. Only reason eritrea is a country today is thanks to tplf, olf, cia and support from America and the arab world to distablize Ethiopia plus over 80 armed groups fighting against derg. Both tplf and Olf had more than the double amount of soldiers, so dont get your panties in a wad about some eri tv msnufactured narrative lmfao thats why we took over your country within days as soon as the incompitent tplf officers was letting the united force of oromo and amhara do our thing. Meles actually saved y'all, the troops wanted to take Assab back. We had to GIVE back badme and disputed areas because your weak army could not do anything.
I am from Eritrea 🇪🇷. My sister has been arrested in 2005 by our goverment that means my sister is still in underground prison for 14 years because of her faith but i dont know if she is still alive or not .We are evangelisch .it is not allowed in Eritrea thats why my sister has been arrested but i miss her so much 😭😭 i was going out to Sudan. I escaped from our goverment. They can arrest me .i want to tell the Wohle world .Eritrea is a north korea of africa
Thanks France 24 . A very professional and balanced reporting. The most touching and telling are the following scenes: 1. "But when we dont say that we are filming, Eritreans deliver a damning verdict on the National Service" 12:40 2. Military Boss about the rock breakers " It is voluntary service. It is their decision to be here." Brave, bitter, rock breakers who definitely are forced to labor for free " We got nothing. We are soldiers. We are all military service. There is no limit. We are not paid. " from 16:50 Sad, Sad, Sad. Eritreans please put yourself on these peoples' shoes for a day and have empathy. No not sympathy. But a little EMPATHY! STOP SLAVERY!! Down monster Isayas Afewerki!
+Sahlu Meseleab It is a pile of Rubbish. More regime change bull manure from the west and aholes like you. With absolutely no understanding of how civilisations are built.
Many Eritrean🇪🇷ppl ended to the jail for speaking the truth. So if u asking the ppl they will lie to you because they know what will gonna happen to them if they say single word against the government. my poor ppl.😌
I dont understand why the french want to show whats happening in other peoples houses but dont want to show the poverty and depression in their own rather speak of how africa finaces 90% of their domestic budget.
No offense but Eritrea looks like a great country compared to some other African countries. They might not be rich or whatever, but they at least have peace. Eritrea could easily be another Somalia but this documentary doesn't show that. I think all they need to do is establish proper rules for the military service, give a passage to the sea to Ethiopia for peace, fix their economy and just overall organize itself and wake up. It's true, they could earn a lot of money from tourism and build up what is broken from the war. I love the way this documentary tries to show Eritrea like North Korea, but it really doesn't look like that. Just the fact that people are able to escape is enough... and besides the military service the people seem happy. The younger generation might feel intimidated with the length of the military service and bad economy, so they escape to freeer and more economically promising countries but I don't think they enjoy doing this. They look united and strong and there seems to be no reason to hate Ethiopia now that they are an independent nation. I wish a peace and cooperation with Ethiopia for the Eritriea!
Nope, I'm eritrean. You've been deceived this is not the look of happy on peoples face. It's the look of intimidation, and apprehensive to tell the truth due to harsh punishment. Eritrean government has done so much damage..so much damage. The truth will come to light, you'll see.. But yes eritrea has MUCH potential to grow it's country with education, tourism, healthcare, employment etc;
Philly Queen Yes the goverment has done a lot of damage, especially what's going on now. But compared to the position the people are in they look better off than you would expect and the message that this documentary is trying to convey just isn't very present. Peace
Hey MultiSciGeek, if you depend on documentaries alone and "optics" to "see" what goes on in other countries, you're closing yourself off to reality. I have Eritrean and Ethiopian coworkers. They left the region for a REASON. One guy left his family behind to escape here and is working hard to bring em over.
Why are you taking videos of people without their permission? And why didn't you blur out their faces and change their voice? This is horrible reporting.
Why did you not try to change the taxi driver's voice, are you freaking kidding me 😭 only God knows what has happened to him. How can you endanger that persons life like that
Do you have consent to release this videos of individuals walking on the streets? How is it that you have a video stating 'African North Korea' and didn't feel the need to protect the safety & identity of the individuals. Very extractionist journalism on yall end. Make it make sense.
12:30 Look at those gorgeous girls! This country certainly has a number of similarities to North Korea in how its governed aside from the fact they don't shoot to kill people that try to leave. Fascinating documentary, look forward to learning more about this country
the ethiopians are saying...."they said a lot in history but what is on the ground is what we fought for and we are close to the winning line" history will written again
47,000 Cubans fled their tropical island in 2015, by boat, kayak or styrofoam float, instant US asylum is a heck of a lure, it's complicated, similar to Eritrea and lots of other countries. a 100,000 Mexicans migrate North each year, what's new?
Eritrea is neither the "North Korea" nor the "Cuba" of Africa. These comparisons are simple minded. There are however line items of similarity when it comes to neo-colonial geo-political manipulations such as "express asylum" and other sadistic incentives. So it is perversely comprehensible that lots of young Eritreans would risk their lives for the glossy promise of economic "freedom" abroad even though their fathers gave their lives for them in Eritrea's epic independence struggle. One aspect I fail to understand is when families are able to come up with thousands of euros to enable clandestine emigration and for paying ransoms to trafficker scum en route, these $$$$s could also be invested in local small businesses, for example. But the draw of riches is usually stronger than reason. In closing I'd say, that the EU's latest strategy to send free money to Eritrea to supposedly help stem the refugee flow is purely despicable self interest and bears not a grain of genuine concern nor a solution to these complex issues.
+cine pobre You raised a great point. Some Eritrean's in the diaspora are sending money to their relatives inside Eritrea to help them migrate illegally, which usually costs thousands of dollars (5-10k minimum). The money that is spent on smuggling people into western countries (making smugglers rich) could/should be spent on establishing businesses inside Eritrea. The lure of rapid economic improvement is understandable, but those fleeing and those helping them flee should consider the alternatives.
Europe's disproportionate incentive of "express asylum" as putative access to a prosperous consumer society is an outright sadistic push factor for young Eritreans abandoning their homeland. www.indiegogo.com/projects/eritrea-start-a-start-up
cine pobre Hello, I can see that a filmmaker by the name of J. Michael Seyfert is the founder of the Indiegogo campaign you linked to. I'm not sure if that is you or not, are you behind this indiegogo campaign? If so, what exactly does it mean to be "able to generate considerable revenue marketing Eritrea's most profitable and sustainable resource"? The page also says, "As a Friend of Eritrea I have created a business model that within 18 months at no cost to the Eritrean State will generate 2 million dollars in revenue as well as substantial residuals for years to come." Are there any specific details that can be shared about this scheme? My skepticism meter is going off and I would like some more info if I am to contribute.
My people, our liberation is soon. The truth can never be buried, just hidden underground. Justice is lighting the the darkness that was HGDEF. Ajokum, alena misakum.
The man who said i am free to speak, i am free to go out where ever i want is a layer. If you want to know the truth is you have to ask the old people.
You interviewed Kubrom the ex Finance minister, Do you know why he left Eritrea? he embezzled money. He is also looking for power in Eritrea. You need to ask the regular Eritreans in the street of Asmara. You also asked why Eritreans leaving Eritrea? Simple answer, Because Europeans and USA lured them by giving them easy entry visa to stay abroad. So any countries citizen will take a chance for that.
there are several local stations but they are state owned and operated if you want to change the channel, you have access to all the international channels like CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, etc...no censorship of information but you must know that private tv stations in a developing country like Eritrea would be harmful because they will certainly be used as tools to sow discord by foreign owners
KK. Please France 24 get out of Africa. Western Colonization Mentality. Ethiopia never Colonized Eritrea. Ethiopians feed them. Mostly Tigrian's Ethnicity people's are extremely narrow minded. Ethiopia has a right to take the Port of Asab.
It still looks better than North Korea I mean in North Korea ur brainwashed about the world You can wear whatever u want in Eritrea no harsh military reservists And people here are smiling to one another they are happy living people But however everyone deserves freedom...
Han that is all acting infront of camera if i was asked and filmed i would have answered the same praising the government too i cant risk my life and my family's life by telling the truth.i would prefer north korea better than my very own country.
While I am not doubting the oppression and such, looking at the state of buildings, people's clothes, etc, seems to be better than most african countries
I see the inviolate, peaceful, organic and humble beginnings of a burgeoning African society. The people of this country appear to ubiquitously, show a altruistic conviction about their country, and at a marginal instants show some contention for their circumstance co-existing with the contrasting element to their necessitate.
Hallo evreybody listen too me eritrean is not friedom eritrean is diktatur world is know about eritrea from eritrean 360 catch else so eritrean is diktatur i have one qostion when journalist dawit Isaak when general bitweded abraha eritrea is diktatur ::
He said ‘’ am free to move am free to write am free to speak’’ 😂😂you know that’s not true but I understand tho he’s will be locked up in underground if he said something else.
You could imagine the people how they're afraid when he asked them question it's because they knew what it's caming happened for them, Eritrea we just breath we don't have life to been in Eritrea! You didn't deserves all the things deeply they didn't take you there they had a lot of prison's in side people in the containers!!!😭💔 I hope one day will be get back the power to the people
Sometimes I wonder why journalists ask a population of a very repressed people these political questions. I mean what do they expect them to say? Especially when others are around to hear? These regimes have ears everywhere. They are afraid to say anything because they can get in real trouble.
I've been in both countries. In north korea and in the 3million village eritrea. Eritrea was much worse. Every eritrean brother and sister has someone who has been kidnapped, raped or tortured by the governement of eritrea. We eritreans hope to arrest our leaders soon. As soon we've changed our stupid governement, we will be able to rebuild eritrea. The goverment didn't do anything for us in the last 25 years!!!!! Time for Change! Let's work closer with our neighbours and abd be respected in the world.
Agame?? A game?? No game my brother. Many people suffer in eritrea. And if you're eritrean and love our people, you should help them. Let's make peace with all african countrys. Let's spread love and positive vibes. We are one Africa!!! We should all work and grow together. We gave our leaders a chance, but after 25 years it even got worse. Sad but true my friend. Do you realy think things will get better for us?? If so, tell us how. Much Love to you my african brother
+Sirium Butcher Agame= Tigray, not a game hahahah.. That you said Eritrea is worse then NK shows how stupud you are.. And it is not worse then before, before with Haile Selassie and Mengistu Hailemariam they killed eritreans on the street.. dude read a bok.. Its to long of a histort to write here
+Sirium Butcher Yes i did.. And they twist the fact a lot and you know it.. The main reason the youth of eritreans leave is because the long period in the army and i am also against that... But with Ethiopia heading to civil war shabia will have to shorten the period in the army when TPLF falls down which will make more eritreans go back and even more stay.. But with the period shorten Eritrea is a peaceful country and a few places on earth where christians and muslims live side by side in peace.. And thats also the work of the EPLF and to brake the tribalism mentality and to make us think we are one.. Which we are eritreans.. Not kunama, Saho, Tigre or Tigrinja but eritreans...
to be honest im eritrean and the last time i went there i thought i knew eritrea back to front but the more i learn about Eritrea the more i understand why they hate the goverment why the running away from thier problems. Eritrea is not poorest country, we have things we can do anything inside Eritrea except from leaving the country which is a problem.
sara yemantecle yes our country is a full of minerals and prosperity however it is nothing if there I corrupt government has been destroyed our beautiful country by a very mean and barberic manner. Finally we eritrean have been scattered all over the world since 2004.
It is interesting to hear that the military national service soldiers said that they don't get paid for such kind of hard labour in hot weather conditions. This is what slavery labouring is under the banner of national service.
The country is just 26 years old why did you expect like the western country, everyone knows it's a problem their but it's only Eritrean ppl not for the western or any other country lest fight our problem by ourself you don't have to tell us what to do or how to do it
As an Ethiopia I can confidently say this would be fixed if Eritrea and Ethiopia United and got rid of afwerki and allowed the amhara oromo gurage sidama and tigray to form one big nationality called the habesha ethnicity party.
4:10 i dont know why they keep asking the people risky questions like they will tell them honestly.. if you want to know the truth dont tell them you are recording like you did to the taxi driver at 12:35
@@berekettsehaye2009 *Yes its my Country is This your Problem why you didnt Care about your Country and your people ? Ethiopia has much more Problems thsn Eritrea yes or No ?*
For nearly two decades president Isaias Afwerki's regime used the border conflict with Ethiopia and the UN sanctions as a pretext to force it's citizens to indefinite military service. Just over a year ago Ethiopian government signed peace agreement with Isaias Afwerki and as a result the UN also removed the sanctions on Eritrea raising hopes among Eritreans that their government will finally reform by limiting the military service to only 18 months rather than serving for life. To this day the regime in Asmara hasn't implemented any reform dashing the hopes and dreams of youth. As a result the brightest and the most ambitious youth of Eritrea have entirely given up of any hopes or pursuing their dreams in their country and instead continue to flee from Eritrea to this day. Very sad!!

Wow.

I am Ethiopian, Ethiopians are not better off when it comes to free speech.
We are far better off, not much more better off though. Appreciating the difference can take us further.

No matter what! & Wherever we are i assure you that Every Eritrean Loves OUR Nation so much unconditionally💯%💝👌🇪🇷👍
Why are the journalists putting these people at risk?

Have you ever went to Eritrea?
I dont understand why the french want to show whats happening in other peoples houses but dont want to show the poverty and depression in their own rather speak of how africa finaces 90% of their domestic budget.
Thank you for sharing our pain 😭
Nope, I'm eritrean. You've been deceived this is not the look of happy on peoples face. It's the look of intimidation, and apprehensive to tell the truth due to harsh punishment. Eritrean government has done so much damage..so much damage. The truth will come to light, you'll see..
But yes eritrea has MUCH potential to grow it's country with education, tourism, healthcare, employment etc;
Philly Queen
Yes the goverment has done a lot of damage, especially what's going on now.
MultiSciGeek just like your name when to comes to politics you are simply a GEEK, so need to answer you what is Eritrea all about!
The western world always brings up human rights when they want to siege a nation and infiltrate it

12:30 Look at those gorgeous girls! This country certainly has a number of similarities to North Korea in how its governed aside from the fact they don't shoot to kill people that try to leave. Fascinating documentary, look forward to learning more about this country

Alemseged Makonnen ክብረት ይሃበለይ!
Europe's disproportionate incentive of "express asylum" as putative access to a prosperous consumer society is an outright sadistic push factor for young Eritreans abandoning their homeland.

The page also says, "As a Friend of Eritrea I have created a business model that within 18 months at no cost to the Eritrean State will generate 2 million dollars in revenue as well as substantial residuals for years to come."

How can you have one TV station? What if I don't like what is on the TV station? Or does it means the TVs don't come with remote controllers!
there are several local stations but they are state owned and operated
if you want to change the channel, you have access to all the international channels like CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, etc...no censorship of information but you must know that private tv stations in a developing country like Eritrea would be harmful because they will certainly be used as tools to sow discord by foreign owners

Very sad!!
OK now Take a mirror and Look at Ethiopia
