I am convinced that the only reason Callas is not universally acknowledged as the greatest female dramatic vocalist is that there are people who are simply frightened by the depth of her soul-genius.

This is the proof that, unlike many people think, chest voice is the foundation of voice. The only way to get a full, limpid, warm voice and the only access to reach the high notes in a proper way, withouth screaming. There are still too many cliches about masked sound. As people feel the sound in the resonators, they think that they have to place it there, sometimes even in an exagerated way by tightening and forcing it. Just on the contrary! The vibration must resonate there naturally and the only way to do that is controlling your voice from its foundation, from the chest. When you achieve that you feel your voice floating, with an elasticity that very few people have nowadays

@@silverkitty2503 a) if that is screaming, I wish more sopranos where "Screaming" like that. b) "sopranos are taught not to do", ok. which sopranos? when? in which school (of singing, not actual physical schools)? c) again, if u call that screaming, don't listen to her Trocatores in the first half of the 50s (referring to a very specific high D, in act 4).

A miracle of voice, musicality, interpretation, drama, and UNDERSTANDING!.... She, and god knows she is the only one, she creates theatre when she sings... she paints people and emotions with notes and with silences...
And she does it ALWAYS respecting the score AS IT IS WRITTEN, quality the makes her already unique...
Just listen what she does with the very last note sung here, an E flat under the stuff... she gives it into a mezza voce chest tone, (already and achievement in itself) and she modulates it into a piano, then pianissimo sound and takes from the chest into the mask resonances.... even in that little tone at the very end of the aria, she is putting all the musical and dramatic tension needed ....What an incredible genius!

The first notes is something really extraterrestrial, such a HUGE, POWERFUL, RINGING AND CARNIVOROUS middle voice hasn't come out of any human throat till this day. And what about those hard to believe contralto low notes? Callas in her prime had a Wagnerian size instrument throughout her entire range.

A comment to match that tone that nobody ever thought they'd hear... again ;) Awesome comment. Listening to the London Farewell version with piano leads to a "was Tibaldi maybe better?"... so one listens to Tibaldi's TH-cam of this Gioconda, which is with orchestra... but fortunately this orchestral version with Callas shows itself too; so one listens to this as well. And it's certain proof that what you say is true. "[Extraterrestrial, huge, powerful, carnivorous (loved that one)... has not come out of any human throat till today]" Thumbs up!

She sounds so incredible! I just adore her chest voice! The way she sings this aria shakes me to the core! I don't know whether I should cry, or recoil in terror, or sit there agape. I believe her. It is like she really is contemplating suicide, and all I can do is sit there, frozen, and I am powerless to move, to try to save her! I wonder if this "learned helplessness" response is what she was going for. I feel so bad for Gioconda, and WITH Gioconda! Is this Callas's true genius? To carry the audience with her, and communicate so effectively that each one of us feels what her character is going through?

She died practically alone abandoned by all her so-called friends and people are still talking about her debating back and forth. Please understand she was very broken inside if she was fine and normal she never could sing like this. Just like Hedy Lamarr was tormented her entire life the fact that she lost her entire family to the Nazis tormented her her entire life because she was deeply loved growing up by her family your father loved her deeply and that's why she married so many times intelligence has nothing to do with it is that deep emotional pain that scars you for life. Not everyone is a survivor regardless of your sex.

Brava María,come sei Grande in quest'aria.

Listen mortals! She is Maria Callas! One of the greatest voices of opera and perhaps the most versatile soprano who has known the genre. Unique woman, of a temperament capable of giving a "not" at the same Aristotle Onassis and able to challenge the unions to work for their long hours of rehearsal. Those who have known agree on something that does not produce any other singer: Everyone left with their mouths open! She is the Diva!

Callas at her best is quite simply untouchable. Let’s face it, she was a .phenomenon, as was Sutherland in a different way and it’s quite likely there will never again be opera singers of this standard simply because they lack the correct training today even if they possess naturally great voices.

No one has ever trained like Callas. Giulini said she lived like a monk (until she met Onassis).
There are many accounts by other singers in productions with Callas who said she always wanted rehearsals
to go longer and longer than anyone else wanted.

Escuchen mortales!

Well, Maria said she was wonderfully happy during her years with Onassis. The type of happiness
      she certainly never had before.
Who are we to deny her that? And before that, she had to work non-stop like a slave to keep her difficult
voice in condition. I doubt she would have kept up that level of training past 40 even without Onassis.

Wow! It was genuine. Method acting to the CORE. There is quite simply no other way that Maria Callas could have communicated Gioconda's pain to this extent! ...I had a musical inspiration yesterday. There is a pop song that I think is very much about BREAKING the cycle of abuse and resentment. In this song, the singer belts, or carries chest voice up. I've come to the realization that I WILL always sound like an opera singer. Now, musically, the two songs communicate very different things! Gioconda is contemplating suicide because she has lost people who are very dear to her. I may be projecting, but I think that The Voice Within is about how the choice to forgive people when they let you down CAN give you "the strength that will guide your way." But, Maria Callas WAS belting as only she could have done so! I think I just decided. I want to sing The Voice Within with how Maria Callas sang Suicidio as my musical inspiration...
