Major Plaster Sir... your book " The Ultimate Sniper" from Pallidin Press started me on a path that eventually led me to three combat deployments in Iraq as a Marine Corps Scout Sniper Team Leader.

@Duke Craig listen to jocko and tilt talk. the military would never allow the things done in Vietnam to be done today. theyre highly snowflakey. would rather force critical race theory instead of the required training and females into special operations through lowered testing standards. you can also hear it from the mouth of one Commander Richard Marcinko, if screwtube hasnt screwed another historical figure out of existence.
the OP is right, we need THESE badasses of Vietnam numbering in the 100s of thousands at this moment in time.

A great interview! I will listen to anything Major Plaster has to say. I am truly honored to know this gentleman as a neighbor, fellow writer, fellow veteran and most importantly, a good friend. He is truly a historical asset, both from the history he has lived and the history he has authored. This nation is richer to have men like John in its service.

I was a Marine Scout-sniper in RVN in 1966, a retreaded 0351 anti-tank assaultman, a 3.5 rocketman. The Corps pulled the 3.5 out of the T.O., and my gunnery sgt. shipped me off to Danang to a fast track 10 day sniper & scouting course. I can't recall the instructors any more, and true to Marine Corps documentation and records-keeping lapses then, HQ Marine Corps, or the Archives, could not find a record of the school, or anyone associated with it. I remember a couple of instructors who had strong southern drawls, but little else. The OIC of the program was a Major Jim Land, thought of as the father of the "modern" Marine Sniper program, during Vietnam. Somewhere, I remember this man, Major Plaster, his name, back then. I wonder if he was involved with our training, somehow. A great story, great man. Snipers were looked at like backshooters, assassins, by a lot of grunts, then. The same guys in my company who I worked and operated with before being re-assigned looked at me differently after I returned with a scoped bolt Winchester rifle, binocs, and camo utilities. Almost with suspicion, it felt. It was a job, same as theirs, but different. A few months later, an F.O. and I were blown up by an NVA mine on an operation, he was wounded mortally and died, I left both my legs on the already red soil of S. Vietnam, and medevac'ed to the States. End of both our Marine careers.

Thank you both. I was waiting for this. I read some of John Plaster's writings in the 90's. It was through him and Leroy Thompson who also wrote about SOG stuff in gun magazines at the time that I first learned about it. It was something about the whole thing that fascinated me more than other stuff. I was a gun enthusiast in my youth and was interested in military matters (later spent a few years doing infantry stuff in my country's army) but never really cared much about tanks, planes and all that. I was always obsessed with maps and compasses, land navigation, wilderness survival, expeditions and such instead and military wise I was always drawn to the American frontier, Indian wars, various colonial wars, the SOG/SF/LRRP stuff in Vietnam and some elements of the Rhodesian bush war.
    Very good show.

Mr Plaster is probably my favorite SOG man. His personality is so cool and every time I hear that Ashtray II mission, I close my eyes & try to imagine what it must’ve felt like to be on & pull off a hit like that. All of these men are so unique. I’ve studied them for years since I found out about them in SOF magazine as a kid. So glad all their stories are finally being told & recognized. Not sure there was ever a deadlier unit in history. Thank you great men for your service to the greatest country on earth; thank you for sharing the stories with us.

It's amazing how often I'm gobsmacked after hearing the stories of these missions. What these guys did, what they endured, and the sheer amount of damage they inflicted on an enemy force several orders of magnitude larger, I mean - it's almost unbelievable. Yet it all happened, and at a level of intensity that can't be conveyed any better than by these warriors who made it happen. The fact that all the SOG vets are so quietly confident and humble makes their stories all the more impactful and compelling. My nephew is a young Army SGT with aspirations to join SF. I have him listening to all these podcasts and reading the books authored by SOG veterans and recommend any combat arms MOS leader to do the same.

Whether people agree with wars/conflicts or not, what these guys did and other soldiers do for each other and country is absolutely unbelievable. Its unreal. Thank you for telling your stories as well so we can get a small glimpse of what these American heroes went through and did. Thank you Jocko as well for giving them a platform.

MEN OF SOG, we need an HBO series on MACV SOG Recon Teams, Hatchet Forces, Spike Teams(I could be wrong but believe they were the same) told with the utmost realism(which is to say truth). Men of SOG WE NEED THIS! Both men like myself who if I had one wish to go back in time to serve in a unit, SOG Recon Teams, I’d do it in a heartbeat, I truly would. I always wanted to be a SEAL ESPECIALLY in Nam, that is until I could out about SF Recon Teams for SOG. Please, please, please make these unparalleled missions for those of us born too late. You lucky sonsofbitches grew up IN THE BEST GENERATION IN MY HONEST OPINION. Can’t say enough about myself and guys that got our hands on your books when we were very very young.

I can't help but think that the military was using these SOG guys as bait. You get the enemy to reveal their position so you can drop bombs on them. The only other explanation is that they forced the Vietnamese to divert a lot of their forces to defending their supply lines so they weren't at the front. Either way no thanks, that's some serious dedication to the military.

John was a year ahead of me joining the army, but very similar experience throughout to graduating from training group. Went through abn infantry at Camp Crockett, have fond memories of phase 1 and Terrible Torres. The legend of the golf balls at ft. sam was well known by the time I got there. Went to 6th grp and subsequently spent 5 months in Arabic language school. Great stories by both of you. Thanks so much for keeping SOG alive.
